Tiadora brings you to meet Mr. Pilkington. Pilkington is a thin man with a thin voice and a pencil-thin mustache. His default mood is "fussy" and his default expression is "annoyed". He sits behind a desk in a large office full of cabinets and files.

Knowledge (nobility) DC 16 or Knowledge (local) DC 21:

Klapaucious Q. Pilkington, last child of a poor and very minor noble family, joined the royal bureaucracy at a very early age. It quickly became apparent that he was a bureaucratic prodigy: energetic, diligent, incredibly well organized; meticulous and honest, with a prodigious memory and absolutely no sense of humor. He rose rapidly through the ranks until he was First Assistant to the Royal Chancellor, with duties that included overseeing all the grain warehouses throughout the kingdom.

Then came the Famine of '98. The King swore that the grain stores would be opened to feed the hungry... but he neglected to put it in writing, and he didn't provide a set of proper procedures. Pilkington gave firm orders that no grain be distributed until this was resolved. The resulting delay was only a few days, but hundreds died of starvation, and dozens more in the infamous Grain Riots. The outraged King ordered Pilkington stripped of all ranks and honors and exiled. So ended the career of Talingarde's most brilliant bureaucrat... or so everyone thought.

Pilkinton is in charge of all accounting for Team Evil. As noted on the discussion page, he'll take your treasure for sale or deposit, and will also arrange for the purchase of up to 300 gp of equipment for each of you. If you have any questions, feel free to ask him.

Emdmin hands his list of items over to the thin man and looks him over for a moment. " Pilkington is it? Klapaucious Pilkington. Yes, I remember you, First Assistant to the Royal Chancellor." The knight shakes his head and holds out his hand to the man.

"I would like to shake your hand. Bad busness all that in '98. It was wrong the way they treated you. It was not your fault that they did not follow proceedures, but they used you as the scape goat anyway. Damn them for casting you aside like that just to cover their own asses."

Edmin puses for a moment, before smiling. "Well I am glad to see you in good health, maybe later we can discuse what you have been doing since then. I will let you return to your work Sir, you have a good day.

Jax will sell the noble's outfits and Blackerly's sword unless there are any requests not to. After that, he'll split the gold up.

Mr. Pilkington, a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I shall provide a written list of purchases to one of the servants and have them bring it to you later.

Jax listens to Edmin's comments and smiles, arching an eyebrow and looking at the man. My, a bureaucrat? Perhaps you and I could sit over a glass of wine sometime. I'd love to hear more about the procedures in this little kingdom of ours. You never know when some information may be useful..

The tiefling approaches Dren after meeting Pilkington and offers his hand. Hello, I don't believe I've introduced myself. It appears we've both sold our souls to devils. I don't know anyone here all that well, and you even less. Since I'll be relying on you in a pinch its only polite to introduce oneself. I am Jax Naismith, dabbler in many things. I got caught trying to forge some documents that would transfer a large amount of a particular noble's wealth to my own coffers. Perhaps my future endeavors will be more successful.

Dren speaks louder than normal, so that everyone can hear his answer, Hello Jax. Indeed, we will watching each others backs. I am Dren...just Dren. I know of no other name or my birth mother.

Mistress Tiadora saved me from being captured by the authorities. My master also plotted against the crown and I guess he was sloppy. When I returned from some errands she stopped me in the street away from his house...and away from their punishment, they were raiding and voilating his sanctuary. Without her I would have walked right into their net. She brought me here to wait for you and said I should join you.
If we are to work together...in a common cause...I should tell you what I am capable of. I am a child of the Dark and it has given me its powers.
I can call upon the darkness to compel the minds of men to do short and simple tasks.
I can call upon the darkness to reach into their minds and confuse them.
I can call upon the darkness to protect myself and others from physical harm.
Lastly I can call upon the darkness itself to bind and heal your wounds...you are the first creatures to know what I am truly capable of.

Just then you notice that Dren's shadow moves on it's own violition and rustles his robe before falling back behind him. He looks at it and scowls for a second.

Sometimes the shadows manifest themselves around me and do things. Just ignore them, they will only try to bother me.

Pilkington blinks as Sir Edmin offers his hand. He is not accustomed to sympathy. For just a moment, something touches his tiny, shriveled bureaucratic soul.

But only for a moment. He shakes hands quickly and then says "Yes! Well, I assure you, this is not an issue with our current employer. Orders are clear and delivered in the appropriate format. Carelessness, sloppiness and informality are," he draws a deep breath, "absolutely not tolerated. Proper procedures are to be followed at all times."

To Bref: "Ah. The goblin. I had... heard about this." He picks up the paper of tarry substance, frowns at it for a moment, then hands it back to Bref. "Analysis of obtained resources is generally a matter for technical staff. This seems like an appropriate matter for Mr. Zargo. I believe you will be meeting with him shortly. Pray refer the matter to his attention."

He turns to Jax. "Fraternization between administrative and field/technical staff is not encouraged. I'm sure you understand."

Pilkington turns his gaze back to the papers on his desk. "And now, if you will please submit your equipment requisition, along with Form 27 B Stroke 6, our office will provide a response within three working days, or five in the case of public holidays or adverse weather conditions. Good morning."

Tiadora leads you down a flight of stairs, and then another. You are now underground. Tiadora pauses for a moment, then turns to you. "The areas below ground level are off limits until the Cardinal instructs you otherwise." She turns away and continues down the stairs. "It is the nature of mortal adventurers to be presumptuous. We lost half of the original Seventh Knot when one of them decided that the Cardinal must be keeping something valuable down here. No great loss, but then we also lost several servants trying to retrieve the bodies. I finally had to go in and do it myself." You pass down a corridor of several doors, all shut. Tiadora opens the last door on the left. "You may learn from their folly, or not, as you please."

That door leads you down yet another flight of stairs, into what must be the mansion's sub-basement. There are strange smells here -- acrid reeks and sudden nose-wrinkling stinks. At the bottom of the stairs, you emerge into a large room with a low ceiling. It is almost completely filled with some sort of laboratory. Brightly colored liquids drip through glass tubings or bubble over flames. In a corner, a well-decayed human corpse in a state of partial dissection adds its own contribution to the reek. There are stains that look disturbingly like blast marks on the ceiling, and stains that look disturbingly unlike anything you can think of on the floor. A great deal of broken glass has been swept into a large glittering pile in one corner. In another corner is an unmade bed with filthy sheets. The combination of stenches is almost overwhelming; you find yourself breathing through your mouth.

Tiadora pauses, then calls: "Zargo!" A few moments pass. Then, more loudly, "ZARGO!"

Knowledge (Local) DC 20:

Wait a moment. Zargo the Alchemist? Zargo the Loathsome? Zargo who poisoned eighteen people living downwind from his unspeakable laboratory of evil? Zargo who then perished -- along with two paladins, a royal inquisitor, and another dozen hapless civilian bystanders -- in the ensuing explosion when the forces of light and justice finally closed in on him? That Zargo?

Bref dances over to the corpse. Lunch?

He then pulls out the black goop and waits for the man who can ID it for him, As soon as Zargo appears Bref all but shoves it in his face.

What this?

"WHAT" Zargo -- for it is he -- emerges with a scowl from somewhere behind the tangle of benches and glassware.

Zargo is a dwarf. His beard is long, wild, streaked with grey, and greasy. His eyebrows and half his hair seem to have been burnt off rather recently. His clothes are filthy, smeared with grease, chemical stains, and dried blood. There are strange blotchy scars over much of his visible face. His hands, too, are covered with scar tissue, and he is missing a couple of fingers. His nails are black with dirt or grease.

"I SAID, WHAT -- Oh, it's you." Zargo's scowl deepens as he takes in the Ninth Knot standing behind Tiadora. "Who the hell are these, now? I thought you were here for the potion. Why are these people here? I'm in the middle of a very delicate procedure! I don't need any distractions!"

DC 15 Sense Motive come on roll it:

Zargo's attitude towards Tiadora is weird: he won't meet her eyes, and is obviously frightened of her, but he keeps staring at various parts of her body when he thinks she isn't looking. Call it three parts cringing terror, one part surly defiance, one part lust.

Zargo recoils from Bref's offering. "What the hell is this? A goblin? You're bringing goblins in here?" His face is a mask of revulsion. "They steal things! Don't let him touch anything! They carry diseases! Gods of darkness, I'll have to fumigate the place after he's gone!"

Zarko's hand goes to his belt, where he has a dozen or more vials. Bref opens his mouth to lunge for the dwarf's throat --

"Chut!" says Tiadora.

Seeing things going downhill rapidly, the Judge steps forward in an attempt to stop things:
Gentlemen, while this may be a dog eat dog world, and undoubtedly under the rule of Mitra you both would be viewed as dogs, here we are all soldiers of Hell. Now stand down both of you before his Lordship decided that you have failed and sends you to be killed by paladins.

Diplomacy:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21

Zarko and the goblin are both dangling several feet off the ground, wriggling in the grasp of the black tentacles that have suddenly sprung out of the floors and the wall.

"It seems that once again I must adjudicate," sighs Tiadora. She walks over to stand between the two of you.

Bref, you take 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 points of damage and you have the Grappled condition. It's your initiative. You can attack Zarko, attack Tiadora, try to escape, or take some other action entirely. You can also wait to see what the others do and/or ready an action.

Escape Artist1d20 + 10 - 1 ⇒ (17) + 10 - 1 = 26

Bref's wriggling is truly inspired. Never before has he squirmed with such agility! Never before has he contorted himself with such nimbleness and grace!

It does no good. The horrible tentacles hold on to him relentlessly.

"Zargo," says Tiadora, "I told you not to annoy, harass or insult our guests. Yet you did so. This is a direct contradiction of my orders. Have you anything to say in defense or mitigation?"

"Wha - But - " Zargo seems paralyzed by rage and terror. "It.. it's a goblin!!"

"I see." Tiadora is silent for a moment. Then: "Zarko, I find you guilty of deliberately and willfully disobeying an order. I sentence you to a Level Two Correction, to be applied immediately once you have finished examining the Ninth Knot."

"Wha - A Level Two - Oh, Gods, no --" Zarko begins to babble. "No, Mistress, I'm sorry, I didn't mean, I thought he was a goblin but, I, no, Mistress, please --"

"Silence." Zarko immediately falls silent. You can see, though, that tears are pouring down his filthy cheeks.
