Holy Symbol reaches across the table to shake hands. "Call me Trik. My brother here is Trak. And this long drink of water here is Dostan Alfson." Trik glances sidelong at the half-elf, who is still glaring at you all with undisguised hatred. "Um, Dostan's not much of a talker."

Dostan lunges to his feet with an oath, reaching for the sword on his back. Trik and Trak grab his arms so quickly that it's obvious they've been expecting this.

"Say there, big fellow, why don't you... go after Elise? Maybe she needs, um, something heavy moved or lifted." Trik glances at Zimu "Her cousin, huh. Yeah, I see the resemblance."

"Calm yourself friend. I do not know why you are so upset but it would be a rather bad mistake to make here. Maybe one day we can meet out side of this mansion and discus your issues at length, but not today."

A grin comes over Dren...he decides there is something about Trik he already likes, Indeed it did.
I don't really understand all of the ins and outs of this exchange but it appears that Zimu and Elise are very similar beings.
Dren has no idea that he may have just insulted his own party member. He sees the facts and sometimes just blurts them out.

Edmin, this is Trik and Trak. They have welcomed us to their table. As you could expect, not everyone got along. he motions his head to the door that just slammed.

To Edmin, Zimu met an old acquaintance, Elise. It seems they dislke each other.

The party files into the dining hall for lunch. This is a large room with several tables. Servants rush to and fro, carrying platters of delicious-looking food.

There are four people around one table. They turn as you come in: three men and a woman. They are all well dressed. As they turn, you can see that two of them are wearing brooches similar to yours. Identical, really... except that these say VIII.

Suddenly the woman stiffens. "You!" she snarls. She leaps to her feet, knocking her chair over backwards. Then raises her arms and begins to sweep out an arcane design in the air.

Zimu recognizes her instantly. It is her much-hated cousin and fellow descendant of Baba Yaga, the witch Elise Zadaria.

He looks down at the plate of food in front of him and takes a bite. No it has not been spoiled.

Trik and Trak may be identical twins -- certainly their appearance supports this -- but they could hardly be more different. Trak is not unfriendly, but he seems rather gloomy. Trik is bubbling and cheerful and does almost all the talking. Although they're the same size and have the same features, Trik somehow gives the impression of being a bit shorter and somewhat foxy-faced.

Trik gives Zimu a frankly appraising stare, up and down. "Well, there's a slight physical resemblance... but I'd say it's much more of an, um, attitudinal thing." He smiles. "Lovely, talented, witty and dangerous too! Your family reunions must be interesting."

Trik shakes Sir Edmin's hand. "A pleasure, sir. A pleasure. My, what a lovely weapon... wait, are those the arms of Branderscar?" Trik throws back his head and laughs. "Oh, that's rich! Well done, sir! I congratulate you!"

"A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Your Honor! Despite what they say about lawyers, heh, we don't actually get a lot of students of the law here -- "

"Zargo had a lawyer." Trak speaks for the first time.

"Oh, did he? One of those adventurers?"

"No."

"That guy from the Seventh? The second Seventh, I mean? Little talky guy?"

"No."

"Not B-21. B-21 wasn't a lawyer." Trik shudders. "Man, let's never go through that again..."

"Not B-21."

"Well, who then?" Trik frowns at his brother. "And why do I always have to beat everything out of you?"

Trak shrugs. "Part of that shipment that came in before Fall Festival. The culls from Daveryn. The old guy with the glasses."

"Oh, right, right. They thought they were coming to some sort of... retirement paradise, for loyal followers of Asmodeus." Trik smiles and shakes his head. "A lawyer, hey? What happened to him?"

"Zargo got 'im."

"That's right, I remember. He was so happy." Trik suddenly changes his posture to an uncanny imitation of Zargo's surly slouch. His voice sounds exactly like Zargo's: "'Enough here for WEEKS of research! Hahahahaaa! Yes!' -- You know, he never did say 'Thank you'."

Trak shrugs.

Trik turns back to the Judge. "Sorry, Your Honor. No, we don't get many lawyers here, and I'm pretty sure you're the first sitting judge. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, truly. Sure, I'd be happy to meet with you this evening. We leave tomorrow, but there's time."

Day 3 He ventures out to get more food, and booze and supplies. Mid Day he plays with Morsum. Rest of the day he contructs a climbing jungle gym like structure. He drinks and eats what he can.

By Day 3 you've recovered almost half your hp. After three days of agony the swelling is starting to go down. Your Cha is back up to 3. Another couple of days and you'll be back to normal-ish.

Trik is intensely interested in the new Knot. He wants to know all about you. He's particularly interested in your escape from Branderscar: however did you manage that?

Zimu only:

After a few minutes of conversation, it's clear that Trik is flirting with you. He's polite, pleasant and charming to everyone, but he's doing the whole 'eye-contact-a-little-longer, crinkle-eyed smile, head tilted fetchingly to one side as he listens attentively to you' thing. Day 4 Bref graduates to solidish food. Still lots of booze. Completes his jungle gym. Plays and learns with Morsum. Begins work on a clay statue of Zargo.

Day 5 It hurts to eat real food still, but not enough to stop Bref. Those passing by can here chew chew ouch ouch... chew chew ouch ouch... chew chew ouch ouch... chew chew ouch ouch

He plays with Morsum and tells him of his fort. When ready he will invite him in. Spends most of the day working on the Statue.

Day 6 A veritable feast of booze and meat. Still hurts a little. Continues to work on the Statue.

Day 7 Perfects the Statue. Invites Morsum to come and help him destroy it the next day. Lots of booze.

V: Everybody Gets Circlets

You meet Zarko in the salon, a large, pleasant room on the ground floor.

(This actually takes place a day or two later, after the Eighth Knot has departed. As I said, these are out of chronological order a bit.)

Zarko is quite different today. His face is pale and haggard, and he's very subdued and quiet. There are no visible marks on him, but he walks very slowly and carefully, as if nursing deep internal pains. He also shows a marked tendency to jump suddenly at small noises. His speech is slightly slurred.

"The... the wizard made these, based on my, uh, measurements. You can't just walk around with your normal faces and those -- " he points to your still-fresh F brands " -- those, on your arms. So these will, will disguise you." Zargo's eyes are swiveling constantly from side to side, and one eyelid won't stop twitching. "Your, uh, Knot pins? They already give you some protection against, uh, divinations. Detection magic. So, this will finish the job. Should." Zargo glances nervously over his shoulder, then shudders. "Here!"

The circlets are collars made of what looks like iron, with small magical runes inscribed on them. Placed around your neck, they close with a simple catch. As soon as you put them on, your appearance changes.

Sir Edmin:
Sir Edmin seems a bit taller, his eyes have gone a very pale blue, and his hair is now sandy blonde. He still looks like a man of action but rougher and less aristocratic. Something about his looks suggests 'sailor' somehow, rather than 'soldier'. His nose is still broken.

Jax:
Jax seems to blur for a few moments, as if the circlet is considering various possibilities. When it stops, he is a rather meek-looking young man with light brown hair, the beginnings of a bald spot, and rather soulful, liquid brown eyes. He looks completely human. He could be a clerk who writes poetry in his spare time.

Dren:
Dren has gone completely bald and seems several years younger. His skin is several shades darker, an olive that is almost brown. His nose is a hawklike blade, and his eyes are deep-set and intense.

The Judge:
The Judge blurs for longer than Jax. Then he snaps into focus: a half-elf with fine but severe features. He sports a rather elegant mustache, and is going grey at the temples. There are dark circles under his eyes. His nose is long and aquiline. The overall impression is aristocratic but a bit dissolute.

Zimu:
Zimu seems an inch or two shorter, and her face is broader, with higher cheekbones. Her hair has gone a lively carrot-red. Her skin is still pale but is now starred with hundreds of freckles. Something about her suggests clean air, fresh water, and the nearby presence of happy farm animals.

Bref:
Bref blurs for quite a long time. When it is done, he is a halfling. He has brown curly hair on his head and on the tops of his feet, twinkling brown eyes, and a snub nose. The red, puckered scar down the side of his face has not changed, however, and a second glance will show that the twinkle in his eyes is more like a intense, manic glitter.

Grumblejack:
Grumblejack seems to have shrunk by at least a foot. (He is still nearly seven feet tall.) He is a massive half-orc with pale green skin and a shaven head. For some reason he has a large gold ring in his nose.

In all cases, your brands have disappeared.

While you're wearing the circlets, the neck slot is taken, so you have to wear your IXth Knot pin on your belt. Note that the pin can be disguised as anything you might wear on a belt, from belt buckle to spell pouch or canteen. The change is temporary -- it only lasts while you're wearing the circlet -- so there's no need to change your icon.

The Judge accepts his circlet and looks in the mirror as he puts it on: Ah yes, another half-blood. So many ladies like the chance to claim to have conquered one with the blood of an elf. The Judge returns to his chambers for the afternoon and visits the library for some quiet in the afternoon.

As evening approaches, he heads out and finds Trik's room.
Good evening. As I said, the Cardinal directed me to you as the Eighth Knot's unholy man. Hmm, what is the best way to put this. . . . I have a bit of a . . . condition. The Judge stops and frowns as Trik's smirk clearly shows he is thinking of the conditions which Cy and Elise were wishing upon one another earlier that day. No, not that type of condition, that is easily curable. No, actually, if you used healing magic on me, well, lets just say I would be worse off than before. I think that the crazy dwarf called it reacting to healing as an undead, yet not being undead.

So, I was wondering whether I could gain your assistance in procuring some of the Dark Lord's unholy healing, the kind that burns the living and revives the undead. My companions can easily purchase wands of healing in most any village, but we both know how common wands are that allow one to heal like a devil, or to heal the undead, in this sun god crazed land.

Dren switches his pin to his belt and places the collar on and changes...he completely bald and seems several years younger. His skin is several shades darker, an olive that is almost brown. His nose is a hawklike blade, and his eyes are deep-set and intense.

We should all wear these for the next few days. We should appear to be perfectly as ease with each other in our new appearances. They are looking for me as well, but I doubt if I will have quite the level of effort in the search as the rest of you.
It's sounds as if not many have ever escaped from the prison, they will want you back quite badly...dead or alive.

Dren will listen intently to the story of their escape if they share it with the other knot.

"Certainly, my dear Judge. I just wish we'd talked sooner! I can cast those spells at will, you know."

"Here's a trick. Did you know she can hear her name anywhere inside this house? At least inside this house. Watch this." Trik takes a deep breath, then says softly, "Tiadora!" A moment passes, and then he says again, "Tiadora!"

The door swings open and Tiadora walks in. She does not look pleased. "Do not waste my time, trickster. What do you want?"

"Tiadora, dear heart, the Judge and I need to go downstairs to see Zargo. It's in furtherance of the Cardinal's instructions. May we do that?"

Tiadora's lip curls in contempt but she nods. "Go." She turns to leave.

"Aren't you going to tell us not to open any doors?" Trik calls after her. Tiadora does not answer.

Trik turns back to you. "You know that old saying about how it's better to apologize afterwards than ask permission beforehand? I talked the Seventh Knot into testing that a little while back. Turns out it really doesn't apply here... Anyway! Let's go!"

Male Vampire(former Dhampir) Bard(Negotiator) 13/Anti-Paladin/2 - [HP 209/231; AC43,FF36,T22; CMD32; DR/10 magic+silver; F+28,R+29,W+26; Per+31; Init +12]

Trik is able to convince Zargo to make three potions for you.

Pilkington will catch it at the end of the month -- he catches everything, damn him -- but by that time I'll be a thousand miles away and it'll end up getting charged to Zargo's lab budget." Trik shrugs. "If he goes over budget again, you-know-her will get to give him a Correction. So, win-win!"

You gain two potions of Inflict Light Wounds and one potion of Inflict Moderate Wounds, all cast at 5th level. Do you want to report Trik's trickery to someone higher up, or do you shrug and let Zargo take his chances?

At Lunch with the twins:
How delightful! You're off on a glorious adventure, I'm sure. Make sure to bring back souvenirs, yes?

After receiving the circlet:
Jax puts the collar on and frowns, walking to a mirror. The look on his face when he discovers the bald spot is positively frightening.
My hair! Zargo fix this immediately! I refuse to walk around like some soft-skinned balding chew toy.

He'll scowl and turn to look at Dren's balding form. What? Wear this for a week when its unnecessary? No. I refuse to be stuck looking like...this tailless monkey.

"You can do as you please," Zargo says sullenly. "I've done my job."

Jax will sneer at Zargo. Yes, it looks like you've done your job in making half of us look like buffoons. Thank you kindly, your eminence.

The tiefling will stalk off, back to the library, to try hunting for information on the book again (two for the day, correct?)
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (18) + 12 = 30

Edit: JUDGE! I'm going to blame you and the 100d20 for neither of those being below a 10.

Trik is able to convince Zargo to make three potions for you.

"They should come out of either your budget, or ours," he says, "but I just mentioned our dear hostess, and he forgot about that completely.

Tohram turns to Trik. Thank you for your assistance. Should you ever need any legal advice, please let me know. There is little I can do directly if you were to get caught as my connections are sort of on the wrong side of the law at present. But, trust me, I will sit on the high bench again, it is just next time the picture behind the bench, rather than being of that weak sun god, will be of the Dark Lord and his lieutenant, Hell's Judge Wylgart.

As the Judge and Trik return to the main floor: I look forward to completing the training and using my skills in this foolish land. It will be interesting to use all the good and trust of this land against itself. Watching it fall will bring great pleasure to me.

So, where has the Master sent you for your first mission? It sounds as though you are being sent to the north. From my years in Farholde, I know that north of the mountains, the rule of good and law is much weaker than down here in the south.

Also, what did your training consist of? It sounds as though you have been here a while, not as long as the Seventh mind you, but a fair while nonetheless.

Zargo did not charge me, but I do not know why. I know what Trik told me he had done, but I do not know the truth or falsity of what was said. Furthermore, what was said versus why Zargo did what he did is pure speculation. Clearly not something that would warrant reporting Zargo. After all, I would not want Zargo to go to Corrections for hearsay.

Jax will smirk before storming out, looking over his shoulder. Well at least you don't look half-bad, Sir Knight.

Timewarping to the necklace gifting scene.

Tohram looks at the displeasure on Jax's face.
My friend, let me ask you a question. Would you prefer that the good dwarf instead made you look like the most beautiful fallen angel in the world? Or like a Pit Fiend? I think that those disguises would be likely to attract attention. I personally prefer one that is, well, forgettable. I want to be able to sit in a tavern and talk with the locals to learn about guard rotations and rumors of the local lord's habits, and not have the people remember my description. That is what your are now. You are forgettable. If someone in this sun blasted country saw you with your horns and tail, well, let me just say when Sir Balin came asking questions, they would describe you perfectly.

The Judge then looks to the others telling them that this statement goes for all present.

I'd prefer not to have a bald spot. I understand the necessity for a disguise though, I'd just rather not stalk about in it when I don't have to.

All the iciness directed at her dear cousin melted and forgotten, where once there was the frost that would send an Ice devil running for his mommy, it is replaced by a brilliant smile that reminds everyone present that Cуровую is indeed an Aasimar and has the heritage of the upper planes.

And I am lucky enough to have the company of Elise's more genteel comrades. You ar emost gracious with your offer for us to join you. Who said Chivalry is wasted on the Paladins?'

Just curious, do you have a picture of the brothers?

Also Cуровую will have instructed two servants very quietly to go to her rooms to 'clean' and await my return. Bar the door from the inside. Allow none without the sigil of IX to enter.

She does not need the cleaning but she does not want Elise or her half wit half elf to leave any surprises for her.

Cуровую will continue to entertain questions posed by Trik and Trak, and give attention to both as needed, and appear to be quite charmed and interested (but not doting) by her cousin's companions.

She will of course try to get information from them a well.

They look like young Jean Servais . Trak has those dark melancholy eyes; on Trik they're more sparkly.

Trik doesn't seem to mind you spreading the attention around. Trak can be drawn out a little, but is clearly used to being his brother's wingman.
