Cole Vedic |
"A higher power? You mean like the one who did this to the church and burned most of my skin off? Something like that, maybe?" Cole said pointing to the image of Diablo on the wall.
Shaking his head he turned to see what the next problem would be, still muttering to himself. "If this is part of some kind of divine plan, it's a damn poor one."
Rasmus of the Viz-Jaq'taar |
If this is part of a plan, it's a damn poor one.
At that moment, tired, sick ,and full of fear and self-pity as he was, Cole's words were the funniest thing Rasmus had heard in a very long time. He didn't know why, he didn't care. He just laughed. Laughed hard and long, until his laughter devolved into a fit of coughs and splutters.
Calming himself, he wipes the tears from his eyes. With a punch-drunk grin and a shaking head, he draws his katars again and strides forward, throwing the door open, laughing again. "What are we waiting for? An angel? We've a demon to kill, and fate waits for no man's Terror!"
Gm Razor |
Rasmus' Reflex Save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
When Rasmus walks up to the door, two Fire Bolts fly at him from opposite sides.
To Hit (Touch): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 211d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Both bolts strike him, dealing 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (2, 4) + 2 = 8 points of damage.
Rasmus of the Viz-Jaq'taar |
The blasts send the laughing raven sprawling to the floor, a smoking heap of charred cloth seared skin. The smell of burning hair floats on the smoke. Laying on the floor, Rasmus lets out a single, heavy cough. Between a few labored breaths, he says, "Finally...some heat... Dry...at last."
Con drain brought my HP down to 22 from 30. Blast took me down to 14. Just a running total. He's his own worst enemy right now XD
Emilio Cross |
"Woah!" At the sudden burst of flames, Emilio rushes to Rasmus' aid, pulling a potion of Cure Light Wounds from his belt and tilting it for Rasmus to drink it.
"That must have hurt. You ok?"
Potion of CLW: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Gm Razor |
Just to be clear, he got shot before he reached the door, and the bolts came from the left and right of him. The door never opened.
There is magic on the door's lock and on the floor tile directly in front of the door. There must have been a trap of some sort. A Perception check would be needed to find it.
Rasmus of the Viz-Jaq'taar |
Rasmus laughs feebly. After a few moments, the potion's effects numb the pain a bit. The seared flesh heals itself, leaving tender pink skin in its wake. Standing slowly, he brushes himself off, removing his still-smoking cloak. His leather armor doesn't seem to be damaged. "Thanks," he says to Emilio. He shakes his head, laughing at himself. "It's the only way down. Why wouldn't it be trapped? It's my own fault; I won't make that mistake again." Running a hand through his hair, he grins wryly, adding, "At least I'm good and warm now!"
22 plus the 6 brings me back up to 28. Thanks. I can't wait until opening a sarcophagus sets off an arrow trap from across the room.
Emilio Cross |
Emilio nods to Rasmus, standing back up. "Does anyone know how to disable a trapped door? Cause I'm clueless."
He chuckles as a thought comes to mind. "Hey Dorian, maybe you could charge through the trap and break down the door."
Rasmus of the Viz-Jaq'taar |
Rasmus pats himself down, checking for his tools. "I can disarm mechanical traps, but if it's arcane, and that one definitely was, then I'm useless. Forbidden arts and all that."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
That's one thing that always really bugged me. The Viz-Jaq'taar aren't trained in the magic arts to keep us from being corrupted by the lure of power that usually gets all those mages in trouble. But if we're supposed to hunt them down, we need to be able to... y'know... get to them. And if they've trapped their hiding place with magic, we can't do jack about it! I swear, it makes no sense! "Sensei, how am I supposed to kill a mage if he trapped the door with a magic spell?" "We'll tell you when you're ready." F#+* YOU, OLD MAN! I always hated it when they talked down to me like I haven't been trained for this since, like, birth. I'm a seasoned field operative! I need to know these things, damn it! Then, when situations like this come up, I can, y'know, save the world! For want of a nail and all that, I guess. "Sorry guys, did my best. But the mage put a fire trap on the door, so I couldn't get through. It's a shame the world's going to end before I even get to say 'I told you so!'"
Aylya Lafina |
There is a less suttel and long winded way but it works.
Aylya sits down 30' away and starts flicking Acid at the magic part of the floor, 1d3 Damage per round. Acid splash, takes a wile but then she is form the land of Ice and well you get the idea.

Rasmus of the Viz-Jaq'taar |
That's funny. Though I wonder if Hardness will keep it from working? Here's a couple checks just in case they're of any use.
Craft (traps): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Disable Device: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
Gm Razor |
No one stops Aylya from wailing away at the door with acid. Sadly, the door is solid wood, and a simple spell like Acid Splash isn't going to do anything to it.
Aylya's Knowledge (Arcana) tell you that the spell was set up by a talented fire based spell caster, as the Fire Bolt that is the trap's weapon is almost exactly like one from an arcane or divine source instead of a mechanical one.
Rasmus's Craft check tells him that while the damaging part of the trap is indeed magical, the trigger is purely mechanical. If he needed to, he could disable it, but it would require a Disable Device higher than what he already did.
Fortunately, after failing to disable the trap sets it off again, the trap resets itself, letting him take another go at it.
Assuming you're on the floor next to the pressure plate, the fire bolts will sail over your head.
Rasmus of the Viz-Jaq'taar |
"WHOA!" The fire bolt firing right over his head startles Rasmus, perhaps more than it should, singeing some hair. "Alright, stand clear everybody. I think I've got it this time..." What is it with these mages? They go through the effort of setting up a magical trap, only to put a mechanical trigger on it? I don't like this one bit...
Disable Device: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
In case that doesn't work, I'll take ten, assuming there's nothing that would prevent me from doing so, like an auxiliary trap that goes off after failed disabling attempts. Also, assuming that it gets successfully disabled, can I scavenge the parts for myself?
Gm Razor |
With an audible click, the pressure plate pops up and is no longer enabled. You can approach the locked door safely.
As Rasmus disables the trap, he finds himself in possession of a few mechanical trap parts: A spring, a few catches, a pressure detector, so on.
I will need a perception check from whoever is unlocking the door.
Aylya Lafina |
Aylya gives up the acid Idea and then walks looks on as Rasmus works, when the fire balls come again, she keeps out of the way. But after he seems to stop the magic fire with click she things.
"Well, he dos have skills that the tribe needs, I best keep this one safe"
Emilio Cross |
"Thank the Gods that's taken care of. I wonder what kind of magic is on the door though..."
Emilio takes a look at the lock, wracking his brain for something from his magical studies to help Rasmus with the picking.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Cole Vedic |
Cole takes a few moments to inspect the trap, particularly the source of the flames.
"That would be a handy trick to know how to do..."
Can anything be gleaned from inspecting the trap?
Know. Arcana: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20
Know. Engineering: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20
Gm Razor |
Emilio is able to tell that the magic on the lock is just a simple Clairvoyance spell that watches to see if the door is locked or not. When locked, the pressure plate engages, but that has been disarmed.
Cole can tell from looking at the business end of the trap that there is a simple hinge that keeps the muzzle hidden from firing too soon. A book rests on the hinge as camouflage.
Cole can also tell that the magic used is from a darker form of the Arcane Arts. He could tell who cast it by using the arcane residue from the spell like a fingerprint, but it's more than likely Lazarus that set this one up.
Rasmus still needs to unlock the door for you to proceed.
Rasmus of the Viz-Jaq'taar |
I was expecting that the Perception check would be used for something; I guess not.
After dismantling the trap, Rasmus passes the parts to Cole to inspect while he works on the lock. After checking to make sure there aren't any other traps, he sets to work with his picks.
Disable Device: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19
Closing his eyes, he takes a deep breath and sets to work. As he jiggles the picks, he whispers to the lock. "Oh, come on baby, that's right, easy does it... just like that, that's how you like it..."
Emilio Cross |
Emilio takes up the rear, keeping a lookout for anything that would want this merry band of misfits to cease living.
Gm Razor |
The passage beyond is just as dark and uninviting as the way in. (assuming you have light) The walls are a dark, carved stone with sarcophagi lining the walls again. These are still shut, cobwebs and mold telling you they've been here a long time.
As you head further down, you feel as though you're being watched...(Just so you know, even a nat 20 Perception won't help)
Target: 1d5 ⇒ 3
To Hit: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Suddenly, a very small falchion swings in front of Cole's face, barely missing him. All at once, the tunnel has three very small red creatures appear in the hall behind the party next to Emilio, beside Cole, and in front of Dorian.
All three of them have different weapons. Cole's has a falchion, Dorian's has a scimitar and a small shield, and Emilio's has a shortsword and a small shield.
The one in front shouts something in a language none of you understand (Cole, you don't have your languages, so I can't say if you know or not), and all three of them start to attack.
Initiative if you wish to roll yourself. Otherwise, I'll roll for you. A Knowledge Arcana can tell you what these things are.
Emilio Cross |
Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 Of course the Cleric's going last!!
GM told me she's working on it. Gonna be a Google Doc with your current alias profile pictures as your tokens. She also told me to scold Cole for not having his bonus languages up yet. >:(

Rasmus will be walking directly behind Dorian, in front of Aylya and Cole. Sorry for the late post; finals coming up, projects due, etc.
Gm Razor |
Alright, sorry for the delay folks. The map wasn't working as planned, but it's working now!
The grey is simply walls, the dark grey is the light beyond, and you can see the areas that are currently visible, including the enemies.
Rasmus recalls hearing of imp like creatures that have yet to become full imps. They are called Lesser Imps, as they don't yet have the ability to fly, turn invisible but a few times a day, if at all, or shapeshift.
You can ask 2 questions about the imps besides what I've told you already.

Assuming Infernal is the language of the Devils, Cole understands the shout in the evil language as "ATTACK!!!"
Dorian Filleul |
In an instant, Dorian's posture changes. Instead of a look of fright or surprise, a large grin from one ear to the other stretches twistedly.
"Ehaha! Come and get it!" Gwendal shouts from Dorian's body as he swings his sword at the one he is currently flanking with.
Power Attack Swing: 1d20 + 5 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 5 + 2 + 2 = 22
