Casts Detect Magic

Detect Magic:

Detect Magic
School divination
Casting Time 1 standard action
Range 60 ft.
Area cone-shaped emanation
Duration concentration, up to 1 minute/level
Saving Throw none; Spell Resistance no

You detect all magic spells, effects, items, and objects (including those on or affecting creatures you can see), as well as hybrid items, in the area. You can’t detect magical traps in this way, as they are created with additional magic that wards them from this common spell. Each round you concentrate on the same area, you can determine if one magic source you detect is from a spell, magic item, or other effect, and the caster level (or item level) of the effect. You can’t determine if there are magic sources in areas you can’t see, or if there was a magic source in an area at one time but that has since expired.

Arcalinte is also doubtful about Ted's assessment of the iconography, but also can't decipher enough of it to come up with an alternative interpretation.

"We should follow after them. They'll tell their friends and families about us and the Maiden, and as long as it's parked here it's a target. It's heavy, but a full group of strong native peoples could theoretically push it off the platform it's on here, or more likely cut the platform loose, stranding us here. We need to either make amends with them or if we truly can't do that, we need to prevent them from making our problem worse."

As you head to the town-facing side of the building, Isu hears the faint sounds of crackling voices coming from the city proper. As you get closer to the front entrance, the voices grow louder and are accompanied by resonant screams and thumps, cracks and general chaos. The sounds of battle in progress!

You get to an empty window frame that overlooks the street in front of the building and spot two small groups of the same aliens from earlier. Both groups have taken significant casualties, with half a dozen lying scattered across the street. Only three remain standing on each side, and it doesn't look like the fight is about to cease before even more of them fall in combat.

Perception DC20; Noticing something about the two sides:
You're able to tell the two sides apart only when you notice that three of the aliens wear a prominent, if crude, symbol on their armor: an outline of a shield-like shape with an upside down tear drop breaking through the top and a circle in the middle.

If you beat a Mysticism DC18 you can identify it and open the below spoiler...

Spoiler:
Though crude, you realize this is intended to be the symbol of Talavet - a well known lawful neutral deity within the Pact Worlds. Talavet is a goddess of community, self-reliance and tradition.

The aliens without the symbol are dressed similarly to those you fought outside.

Isu's sniper rifle shot connects with the side of a distracted alien, badly injuring it and enabling its Talavet-worshiping opponent an opening to finish it off. With the sides suddenly unbalanced, the Talavet followers gang up upon one of their opponents and rapidly dispatch it with their axes, leaving the last one to flee for its life.

The Talavet followers stand warily for a moment as they watch the ruined city streets around them for more enemies. When none surface, they huddle together to confer in their crackling tongue. Two of them offer what appear to be prayers to Talavet while the last one strips off an armor plate on its shoulder to reveal a gruesome wound - one that looks serious enough to endanger the survival of the arm.

Sense Motive DC20; noticing something about the behavior of these aliens:
There's a degree of uncertainty in their prayers to Talavet, as if they recently learned how to show their respects, and they're still not sure if they're doing it right.

The badly injured aline cradles its arm and looks to the heavens.

As Spectre, Arc and Jelico make themselves known, the three Talavet followers raise their guard immediately. They weapons are out, held at the ready, but they don't immediately attack. Instead, they eye your group cautiously and exchange a rapidly flurry of words in their language.

At Arc's words, they show no signs of having understood him. However, his disarming attitude is conveyed despite the absence of a shared language. The attempt at communication earns an attempt in kind. One of the uninjured Talavet followers crackles "ඔබ අහසින් ආවත් ඔබ හිස් කබල දරන්නන් නොවේ. ඔබ කව්ද. ඇයි ඔයා ඉස්තාමාක් වලට එන්නේ." loudly and slowly - as though speaking to someone hard of hearing. Sadly, the effort leaves their language no more clear to you than before.

Jelico gets the sense from their stance and intonation that they've asked some kind of question or attempted some kind of warning. Certainly, it doesn't look like they're willing to allow you to get close quite yet. And Jelico's offer of aid is as non-understandable to them as their language is to you.

If you'd like to try to make your intentions clear non-verbally, you'll need some kind of alternate check. The most basic is Culture, but if you have an idea how another skill might work, feel free to throw it out.

Jelico's medical knowledge tells him that the alien's wound is very bad, and that prompt healing will likely be needed. (Though Mystic Cure 2 will be enough to stave off any danger of death)

The Talavet followers eye Arcalinte intensely as he attempts to convey his own name. They don't seem to have entirely caught on until one of the trio drags a trio of fingers across its skull and the others repeat the motion. The one who first acted speaks to say "Erkලින්ට්". Then it waits a moment to see if you react, before dragging fingers across its skull again and saying "ටිකී", which sounds a little like the common word 'Tech'.

The trio step back warily as the serum rolls forward, but when the device does seem harmful, they look at it curiously. One of the uninjured ones is brave enough to pick it up and turn it over in its hands.
I'll assume that Arc helps Isu with the charades necessary to convey drinking the serum.

Between Arc's diplomacy and skill at pantomiming, the aliens seem to get the gist of what the serum is used for. One of the uninjured aliens unstoppers the vial and holds it up to its face. A tiny proboscis emerges from the back of its open mouth to touch the liquid. After a moment, it passes the vial to the injured alien, who immediately downs the contents.

Serum Healing: 1d8 ⇒ 3

The serum takes effect immediately, restoring some of the creature's more minor wounds and making a small but noticeable effect on the large arm wound as well. The injured alien springs to its feet in surprise. The three look at your group with a lot less wariness than before.

I'll assume Jelico does so with a Mystic Cure 2 (as rolled above).

The aliens don't back off or draw weapons when Jelico comes close to try to heal the injured one. As his spell takes effect, they emit a chorus of strange, alarmed crackling cries. However, when the injured alien regains full use of its arm moments later you can tell how happy and excited they are even with the language and cultural barrier.

They confer briefly after that and seem to come to some agreement. They gesture and intone slow crackling words. (Arc, I'll use your culture check for interpretation here.) Arc gets the sense that they want the party to follow them. They turn and begin loping northward into the ruined city, every so often stopping and turning to look whether or not your group is following.

Your walk through the city takes you past towering buildings, all pockmarked or collapsed. Most are made of the same white-green crystalline substance that comprised the landing pad. Ancient signs hang here and there, their text faded. Some buildings at ground level look like they were once storefronts or businesses, though its quite difficult to tell for sure.

Your path leads you out of the business district and into what looks like a residential section, with tall buildings with a repeating structure and evenly spaced windows. Some are little more than rubble strewn across your path, but a surprising number of them still stand. Your guides take you between the tall buildings and up to a two story structure that is surprisingly totally intact. A much more recent rough iron fence and stretched hides to provide shade identify that this is a place that's currently inhabited. But its the large symbol of Talavet on the front that gives you the greatest confidence that you've reached your destination.
---

A few more of the Talavet followers are gathered here, including a particularly tall one in long, flowing violet robes. (Pic of building and robed alien added to handouts) Your guides converse with the robed alien, pointing to their healed ally, and then at your group. You hear their interpretation of Arcalinte's name getting mentioned.

The robed alien steps toward your group. They raise a hand toward Arc, and begin weaving their fingers in intricate patterns. Tiny glowing runes begin to form in the air around them. They reach out to touch the solarian...

Arcalinte smiles as they appear to have clearly made some friends on this world. When they motion for the group to follow, Arcalinte takes the lead after them. As they travel, Arcalinte marvels at the architecture but tries to avoid falling behind.

When they arrive at what appears to be their settlement, and are approached by someone who is clearly a spiritual leader, if not a political one, and Jelico confirms the nature of the spell they're about to cast, Arcalinte nods and opens his mind to accept the spell's power.

Voluntarily failing the Will save, chief.

The moment the spell takes effect, Arcalinte is immediately slain by a deceptively cast phantasmal killer begins catching scraps of meaning in the crackling sounds emitting from the mouths of the aliens. They speak in hushed, worried tones, but you catch 'Outsiders' 'More of them' and 'Dangerous'.

The alien leader steps back, a little wary as it regards Arcalinte, then speaks in the crackling language that Arc now understands! "Dire greetings, cloudwalker. Who are you, and what brings you to the lands of the Kish? These are bloody times, and if you are of one mind with the mad cloudwalkers that came before, you are not welcome."

If the other members of the party consent to it, the alien leader has additional share language spells available and is willing to cast one on each of you. As a result, if you want to be involved in the conversation, you can just say you accepted a share language and speak up.

Isu certainly wants to know what is going on, so he also takes the spell.

Arcalinte bows and when he rises, displays his Society subdermal implant.

"I am Arcalinte Soter, Starfinder and Sola of the Order of the Empty Orbit, and these are my fellow Starfinders: Ted Under, S-P37 or 'Spectre' for short, Jelico Kent and Isu Greelax Zyte of Clan Tarma, House Hadula, Scion of Isuma the Missing. We have come to your world in search of knowledge and understanding."

He points out to the sky.

"Somewhere out there, in the distant dark, there is an ancient weapon. My father's people called it the Gate of Twelve Suns. We call it the Stellar Degenerator. It has the power to murder a star, and with it all life on the worlds orbiting that star. Such power is too great to trust mortal hands and wills with, but some, whether mad or cruel, believe themselves deserving of it. The mad cloudwalkers you speak of are likely one such group, whom we have clashed with several times on other worlds. They see the Stellar Degenerator as a manifestation of their horrific god, and so they seek it to destroy whatever they wish in its name. We seek to stop them and to ensure the weapon can never be sought out and used by others like them, one way or another. Our quest has led us here, to this world, your home. We know it as Nejeor VI, but what do your people, the Kish, call it? And whom do we have the honor, and the pleasure, of speaking to as their representative?"

He let the do the talking.

The purple robed kish makes a sound like scattering gravel, which you interpret with your newfound language skills as a sign of relief. "I am Tzayl, Herald of the Teller of Tales, and this land you call Nejeor Six is known by our kin as Istamak."

"I am ninefold glad to know you do not consider the mad cloudwalkers as friends, for we do not count many able bodied warriors among our number. But if you are here to hunt and kill them, I am afraid you have come too late."

"They arrived five days before, in a vast metal cloud like yours except sharp and black and red. Their clothing was much the same, as though they wore the blood of creatures they killed. At first, their leader spoke of gifts to give and knowledge to share, spoke indeed in kishaleen as though they had always grown here. We welcomed them into the Great Temple, for they said they sought something of great importance within, inside what we call the Vault of Tales. But the moment they were inside, they turned on us, causing many deaths and much destruction."

"I know not if they found what they sought, but they carved a path of kish corpses out of the Temple and back to their cloud, which they rode back into the sky." Tzayl shakes with emotion. "Many lives lost."

At the mention of the Stellar Degenerator, Tzayl pauses in thoughtful silence "Of course. The mad cloudwalkers also spoke that name, though they said it was a key to enlightenment they sought, not a weapon. Knowing now their true nature, it should be no surprise they spoke falsehoods."

"And now thanks to their evil, our clan lies divided - kish against kish."

"That is definitely our enemies, the Cult of the Star-Eater's Spine. They're skilled deceivers, though they do truly believe the Stellar Degenerator is a key to enlightenment, since to them destruction and enlightenment are one and the same. How did they divide your clan? I believe some of these renegades were the first of your people we encountered upon arriving. They certainly were less interested in attempting to communicate than Tek and their companions were. The Cycle's balance is tipped one way now, but we can easily tip it back."

To Jelico's comment, Tzayl says "In a way yes, and in a way no." before it launches into answering all three of the other questions all at once. "None of us, the exiled followers of the Teller of Tales, know of what the mad cloudwalkers may have taken. For the moment they finally left, our less faithful kin turned on us. They believed us to have been the cause of the cloudwalkers' terrible toll on our people, for we were the first to open our arms and greet the newcomers. I was even the one that recommended they be allowed in the Great Temple."

Tzayl's central eye unfocuses, perhaps a sign of reflection. It continues "I do hold great blame. And yet rather than speak like civilized kish, Huntmaster Xavra announced that the worship of the Teller of Tales was the cause of our ruin, and that all true kish should purge the faith. We fled, and now our kin fight us across Istamak. And we die out."

"My kin will hate you, see you as little different than the mad cloudwalkers before you. But it does not need to be that way. Our meeting is proof of that, I hope."

"You speak the truth and with great wisdom, Tzayl. My own goddess, Sarenrae, teaches us that a leader who acknowledges and accepts her errors is a leader truly worth following, for their clear-sighted vision allows them to become better with each new dawn."

He strokes his chin.

"Worship of Talavet, the Teller of Tales, is common in the Pact Worlds, our home. The way you speak of your faith implies it is still new among the kish. Could you go into more detail regarding that? Why would your Huntmaster regard the worship of a goddess of community and self-reliance with suspicion?"

Tzayl answers Arc's last question first. "The Teller of Tales is indeed very new to the kish. Just eight moons ago, the divine one began appearing in our dreams. We had always looked to our honored ancestors for guidance, but Talavet told us to do more than just that. It spoke of the long-forgotten stories and knowledge left behind by our forebears. That we urgently needed to seek our history and understand it." Tzayl intones seriously "Only a few had the dreams. But many others saw the wisdom in the message. We need but look at the world around us to know that much has been forgotten."

"It was one of these dreams that told me to be open to those who would come from the sky. And it was no more than two suns from when I explained this to the Chieftan and the Huntmaster, that the mad cloudwalkers first appeared. Now every kish outside us exiles believes that it was the Teller of Tales who brought this ruin upon our people."

Tzayl shakes silently, central eye staring into the middle distance, clearly recalling something terrible. "And so we kill one another."

As the rest of the party asks about the Great Temple, she adds "If you seek to enter the Great Temple yourselves, you will find it difficult. After the strangers left, Huntmaster Xavra sealed the Temple after their finest warriors took up guard inside - so that should the mad cloudwalkers return for more, they would not catch us off guard. The Temple is sealed from within and will be opened only if Xavra allows it." Tzayl thinks for a moment "But if you seek to find what lies within, and what the mad cloudwalkers have taken, there may be another way in."

"I have heard the voices of our ancestors, as do all living kish, and I know among them must be those who once lived in Istamak when the Great Temple was built. They would know truth of that ancient place and thus know of ways to get inside while the vault doors remain closed."

"Perhaps if you their wisdom and blessings yourselves, you may learn of such a way to reach what you seek."

Jellico nods at the mention of ancestors. As a follower of Desna and very devout himself, he recognizes the importance of those who have come before.

"I thank you for your candidness in speaking with us. How do you suggest that we go about seeking the wisdom and blessings of your ancestors?"
