By the way everyone I will be playing the guaranteed character but have elected to wait until all submissions are made. My goal is to play with all of you and have fun!

Oh, right, the questions. Here they are, and also on my profile.

20 Questions for Deep Character Creation:

1. What emotion best describes your character?
Mindless fun.
2. What emotion does your character evoke in others?
She can be incredibly annoying with her tricks and puns, but she is steadfast when needed.
3. What does your character need most?
She is running from responsibilities. What she wants is to live a carefree life forever, what she needs is to realize that she can’t run from her past forever.
4. What is your character’s goal in life?
To experience everything the world has to offer.
5. How does your character believe this goal can be accomplished?
She likes to be on the road, freely roaming, meeting new people and new experiences.
6. Where did your character come from?
She is the product of an oppressive environment she rebelled against, followed by a few years of chaotic anarchy. In the years of her adolescence she never had anyone to help and guide her, so she had to learn to fend for herself.
7. When did you grow up?
Mostly the night she lost the Sczarni caravan. Realizing that her connection to the spirit world was not as bad as she thought planted the seeds of reflection in her mind. However, she still is quite selfish and will need to grow up during the adventures.
8. What values does your character hold?
Over all, she treasures freedom and liberty, experiencing what the world has to offer and widening one’s views to avoid becoming old codgers like her village elders.
9. How does your character dress?
She likes to feel the wind on her skin, so most of her dressed are short and sleeveless. She only wears armor if she thinks that she will need it soon.
10. What are your character’s means?
Economically, she has some money from her job as a caravan guard; in combat, she relies on magic first and avoids physical combat, preferring to help her companions.; socially, she revels in bluff and intrigue.
11. What are your character’s personal tastes?
She enjoys being around wildlife, eating, drinking, the smell of rain in the woods and fast-paced folk jigs. She dislikes salad, steamed vegetables, dark colors and pigs.
12. What are your character’s opinions?
She believes that nobody has the right to deprive another of their freedom, and she would be willing to bring down someone like that, not caring about the consequences.
13. What is your character’s comfort zone?
She feels naturally at home in natural places, even she tries to deny being homesick. She enjoys drinking, eating and singing, but also relaxing alone in the woods.
14. Who has had the biggest impact on your character’s life?
Negatively, the village elders, forcing her to run away. Positively, Sandru, who gave her a job to keep her off the streets. Also most of the people who travelled for a bit with the Sczarni.
15. What are some of your character’s unexpected quirks?
Her divine magic powers, usually reserved to solemn and wise characters, clash with her hedonistic approach to life. Some people might be shocked in realizing that she’s a kitsune, not a human. She also feels deeply uncomfortable in the presence of pigs for some unknown reason.
16. What kind of story does your character belong in?
In the spirit of The Journey to the West, The Hobbit and a myriad of other works I don't remember, Mamise will embark in the fantastic journey of Jade Regent in order to find a purpose to his life, discover himself and broaden his perspectives. She does not know that, though, and right now she sees life as a road trip.
17. What role does your character fill?
She is a support in combat, primarily buffing her partners and debuffing her foes. Out of combat, she will be the bluffy part of a face, and she can employ her disguising and shapeshifting abilities in a variety of social situations.
18. What should the other players know about your character?
First, I abhor PVP and stealing from the group, and so will Mamise. Second, she's not currently crushing on any of the three “romanceable” NPCs, so they are all free for you. Third, lying comes to her as natural as breathing, so expect her to keep secrets until she has established bonds with you.
19. What is your play style?
I try to act as much in character as possible, describing my actions in detail. I also tend to perform acts or to boast in a way that I find cool, but that not only appreciate. If unpleasant, I will try to refrain from it.
20. How do you want your character to die?
Death is a strong factor because it is unexpected. Therefore I think that the best way for my character to die is when the dice decides so, be it blade, poison or accident. If you ask Mamise how he would like to die, she would say that she never wants to.

I think I am done.

Excellent! I will most likely do another review round in a night or two!

Silver Crusade

@ DavianGrallus
What is missing in my submission?

One to many traits possibly

@Ikoma you DO have one too many traits, however your name wasn't written because I didn't know you were done with your character! I apologize!

I'll look it, and the others, over tomorrow night. I apologize for missing it!

Anything I need to fix, Grallus?

Nope! Anyone listed is a ' ok as far as I saw. If there is anything wrong with anyone's, I'll PM them for sure!

Silver Crusade

@ I missed that I had one trait too many, but that has been fixed.

The Master List 2.0:

Spirit Guide Oracle Mamise

Armor Master Titus

Spiritual Summoner Rokkad

Cartomancer Witch Syeira

Samurai Ikoma Gohei

Hunter Shalewen

Even with the limited number of applicants, this is already a very, very good pool. The decision will still be a difficult one!

Feel free to update, change, or revise your sheets until the 5th, and let the rest of the applications come!

I believe I am waiting on an Unchained Monk, and Xunal. Am I missing anyone else?

Here's the crunch on that monk, I'm working on the background, personality, etc. Hope to have that up tomorrow but it might be on Tuesday.

Alright cool!

GM Questions:

-Who are you and how are you doing?
My name's Anders, but my friends call me Ty. I'm a grad student in Tokyo but originally from the US. School's about to start so I am STOKED.

-How often do you tend to post?

Depends on the game. One game has a pretty relaxed posting rate, so that's usually every couple of days. Most of my games are at least once a week.

-What kind of tone are you looking for in this game?

I like varied tones. My two favorite non-dnd-esque RPGs are Unknown Armies and Paranoia, so it's not like I can't be both grim and humorous, but Jade Regent lends itself to a bit of both, from my understanding.

-What do you expect out of your fellow players?

I'm not a huge fan of people who get super-duper invested in individual characters, where character conflict becomes player conflict or vice-versa, though PBP does little of that. Once played an IRL game with two people who were dating and going through a rough patch and everything was just super awkward.

-What do you expect out of me (the GM)?

Just stick around. More than one game I've had has had GMs bail. It's, like, negative fun.

-What is your comfort zone? Where's the line for you in RP terms?

Just don't describe super sexual stuff "on-screen" and you won't run into problems with me unless it's supposed to be like somehow eldritch and cthuhlu-esque. If something has sexual elements to it and it's supposed to be creepy then go ahead and be as vulgar as you want to be. However, use that stuff like habanero sauce: a tiny bit can really kick things into gear, but a bunch just makes things painful and gross.

-How do you see your character progressing as a character?

Come the start of the actual "god almighty she's an empress" part, I think he'll do a very large shift in characterization. He's a soldier who wants to make himself useful to something but at the start of the AP doesn't know what.

Barring errors, of course.
Just need to put together a back story, which I'll do tomorrow.

Let me know if I need to fix up anything on the stats.

Thanks!

Amusingly enough, after all that, I've gotten into another Jade Regent game, so I will pull out of this one. Thanks for your consideration and have fun!

Enjoy and have fun, Titus!

@ DavianGrallus:

Hi again!

Updated my profile to include a bit of a back story.

Let me know if I need to change anything.

Thanks!

Early Life:
Elgabaal is an ifrit having lived most of his life raised by Shalelu, the mysterious elven protector of Sandpoint. His mother, Nebit, was a human merchant. His father, Maqid, was an ifrit mercenary. He has only dim memories of the city of Katapesh, where he was born. Maqid died in battle when Elgabaal was a toddler, so he has no memory of his father.

Nebit stopped in Sandpoint for a time. She was going Magnimar after that, with a tidy sum she brought along with her. In the short time Nebit was in Sandpoint, she befriended the normally reclusive Shalelu. Nebit confided in Shalelu about Elgabaal's ifrit nature. Soon after, Nebit took ill and died before anyone in Sandpoint could help her. Shalelu took it upon herself to raise Elgabaal herself. At least Nebit left behind enough money to help in that.

Few people in Sandpoint even knew Elgabaal even existed. While he may be devoted to Shalelu as his adoptive mother, in his youth, he was frequently abrasive and cantankerous to almost everyone else. Since ifrits age slowly, Elgabaal's mercurial youth lasted several decades.

While a competent tracker, thanks to Shalelu's tutelage, Elgabaal is more comfortable with combat. Especially where it involves finesse over brute strength. He has also learned how to make the use of his ifrit abilities in combat.

In recent months, Elgabaal has started socializing with the locals of Sandpoint. He is still disagreeable at times. But not nearly as much as he once was.

He sees both Sandru and Ameiko as role models. Like older siblings. Despite being decades older than either. Inspired by their exploits, he would like nothing more than getting glory by putting his skills to the test.

Starting Wealth: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 6) = 16

By the way looking at the selections I have opted to be a Bard. I will be playing Ameiko's little sister.

Speaking of which, the final group will be selected tomorrow and will begin working on the beginning of this campaign!

I will do away with the list, as all characters based on crunch are approved, I believe I am just waiting on Tree's background.

With that, I will make my decision at late evening tomorrow- around 5pm EST or so.

Good luck everyone! Fingers crossed...

drum roll time (sort of)

As we all drum roll, feel free to read the rules in the discussion thread! No need to adjust sheets yet, and please ask early questions in here instead of the discussion thread.

This is a nice little expansion to how I have GM'd in the past and will GM this PbP, fully open to player opinions!

Why not do passive perception like 5e did? Assume take 10 all the time. This can get difficult later as perceptions fluctuate from class abilities and spells but its better than not getting a chance. Cause there are plenty of situations where one is not expecting a hidden character or trap and thus, does not think to roll. Cause it sounds like if we don't roll for it, we aren't going to find it, even if it is poorly hidden.

Oh, that is what I mean by passive perception. Sorry if that wasn't clear! Your perception "at rest" will always be 10+WIS or 10+Skill Bonus.

In regards to traps, they are a bit different. Resting perception is for sights, smells, for obvious sounds- looking for traps is a different story, as there are literal class features for doing so.

So if someone has a resting perception of 30, and the trap DC is 15, of course you see it. I will not be playing this cheaply.

But traps are hidden by design- I believe they are a different story than hearing a gorilla coming up from behind you, or smelling that horrid stench of death about 60 feet up ahead.

The overall goal, of a majority of the rules put forward, is to get the party to

1) Act as a party and unify a group of strangers to their strengths and weaknesses and

2) Allow the players to take more and more control of the game into their hands, learning to manipulate things into their favor, instead of the GM crash course shot calling.

The beautiful things that have happened in other games by GM'ing this way are just unexplained wonderful phenomenon.

It will also allow me to see so much more of your characters that it isn't even funny, but I believe this answers your question, Zayne?

To you, and everyone else, please mention and comment away.

I kind of like the idea of investing a few shekels the caravan, myself.

Probably won't get stupid rich that way.
But it would be nice to get some income without risking your life (as much).
I look at it as icing on the cake, really.
If you can invest a few hundred gp and ultimately make that several times over, then why not?

For downtime, that always has potential for characters.
Get leads, get in (or out) of trouble.
Plot hooks and all that sort of thing.

Absolutely! AND-

I don't /10 on your daily earnings.

In fact, I don't divide them at all.

***laughs like a mad man***

The Final Draw of Characters:

Congratulations on the following group, in addition to GM Moshado!

Cartomancer Syeira

The "Tree" Monk

Samurai Ikoma

Hunter Shalewen

Spirit Summoner Rokkad

This was a very, very hard damn choice! I had to read over your 20 questions, backstories, and builds about 3 times each before I could decide on a group that I think will work best together.

To those who did not make it, I appreciated your characters, and am sorry we won't get to play together.

I always wish I could take more players, but unfortunately I have to contain myself. :(

In the meantime, those picked, feel free to hit up the discussion thread.

Hooray! Congratulations everyone, and good luck to the others in the future!

Congrats, to the finalists.
