DM Zyren/ Heart of Runes |
The door flies open and Karlan is nearly nauseated by the stench coming out of the room - decay, excrements, putrefying flesh...a fine mixture of these thing hits him like a hammer.
In the large dark room beyond the door sits a towering spider the size of an elephant. Its legs have spiky joints and its face looks vaguely, but disturbingly, humanoid. Saliva drops from its mandibles and as it looks at you, you sense an unnerving intelligence behind its numerous black eyes.
Ailetha Aurcalam |
Readied action: Begin Inspire Courage if the spider makes any agressive moves.
--> Ailetha begins to crack jokes about the spider needing the eight legs to compensate for what it lacks otherwise.
--> Begin Inspire Courage +2 att/damage/some saves
Celestra Zomesco |
"Dear Cayden, I did not think the stench of this place could get any worse!"
Ailetha begins to crack jokes about the spider needing the eight legs to compensate for what it lacks otherwise.
"Ailetha, how do you keep your sense of humor around such grotesque creatures?"
Celestra immediately draws her rapier and prepares to support Harry and Karlan however she can.
Marek Ironblood |
Marek scowls at the creature, avoiding getting near the other party members with his necromantically-charged blade.
I suggest you spare some healing spells, miss Zomesco. We are bound to find the prisoners soon and they will need your assistance.
Celestra Zomesco |
"That is a good suggestion, Marek. I will be ready to do my part. Let's just get rid of these filthy guardians first!"
DM Zyren/ Heart of Runes |
You're not sure whether the spider is able to understand Ailetha's jokes, but after the second one aimed at it, it smashes its raptorial legs down and shatters some of the massive granite tiles. A cloud of dust rises, which thge spiders uses draw slowly back into the darkness of the room, out of your light radius...
Marek Ironblood |
Marek narrows his gaze, taking a second to adjust to the darkness. His eyes reflect the light in an unusual way, appearing almost completely grey. He takes one small step forward, confident of his skills but awaiting for the group leader's initiative.
Alana Wayworth |
Alana has her crossbow trained on the are where the creature was, assuming that with as large as it is, it can't be too far off in either direction from where it just was. "If I don't take the shot now, the spell will wear off..." She looks to Karlan for the go ahead.
Celestra Zomesco |
Let's see if we can put a little illumination into these shadows!"
Celestra uses her Aasimar heritage and calls daylight upon a single copper piece which suddenly brightens the entire room by an entire light level.
Duration 70 minutes
"Heads or tails?" She asks before she tosses the coin in the direction of where the spider retreated.
DM Zyren/ Heart of Runes |
(I'm not waiting for the heads or tails decision, ok? :)
The coin flips through the air into the deeper parts of the room where the gigantic spiders sits in a lair of cocoons, animal and human remains - for a second you lose all hope to find any of the rangers alive, but then you see that at least inside of one of the coccons something is still struggling!
Since it's only one opponent I don't think we need a map - ready for initiative?
DM Zyren/ Heart of Runes |
I hope nothing serious?!
Karlan unsheathes his sword and steels his grip on his shield. He nods to Harry
You take the right, I'll attack from the left!

Duration: 7 rounds.
Marek Ironblood |
Round 1
Giving the eight-legged creature an appraising glance, Marek decides to wait until Sir Karlan has a chance to draw the creature's attention.
Delay until Initiative 8 after Karlan.
Alana Wayworth |
Alana lets loose the bolt from her crossbow (whenever it's her turn!).
Crossbow 1d20 + 5 + 20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 20 + 2 = 31
Or -20 if the True Strike has burned off at this point.
Damage 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
+2 attack/damage from Ailetha's Inspire Courage
Celestra Zomesco |
Forgive my accent if I didn't quite get it right, but here is Karlan and Harry going in for the kill!
Round 1 - Karlan
Karlan steps forward and stabs the spider with his scimitar.
Scimitar: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24
Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
"Let's take this beast down, Mr. Handsome!"
------------
Round 1 - Heavy Harry
"Let's take this beast down, Mr. Handsome!"
"After you, Sir Bladetwist!" Harry replies.
Harry steps up and positions himself to flank the spider with Karlan Bladetwist and drives his great axe into the arachnid.
Great Axe: 1d12 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16
Damage: 1d12 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Ailetha Aurcalam |
I do not think that you including the +2/+2 from my Inspire Courage for either Harry or Karlan?
Karlan's attack should be 26 with 12 damage.
Harry's attack should be 18 with 20 damage.
If Harry is flanking, then he gets another +2 on the attack and 3d6 sneak damage.
If Harry still misses, Ailetha will cast Timely Inspiration as an Immediate Action giving Harry another +2 on his attack.
--> Ailetha sees that Harry's swing appears to be just wide of its mark and quickly shouts an inspiring comment that helps Harry's correct his swing.
Cast Timely Inspiration on Harry.
Ailetha then moves forward to assist the men while continuing to belittle the spider.
Attack-rapier: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 9 + 2 = 29
Damage: 1d6 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 2 = 10
Crit confirm: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 9 + 2 = 12
Damage: 1d6 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 2 = 10
Marek Ironblood |
Round 2
Benefitting from:
Greater Magic Weapon: +1 attack and damage.
Inspire Courage: +2 competence on attack and damage rolls and Will saving throws against fear.
Vampiric Touch (caster level 16): 8d6 damage and temporary HP.
Jumping to action, Marek uses his companion's movements as a distraction to approach the beast. His silvery blade, heavy with scarlet tendrils, dances around the many legs of the beast, searching for an opening to cut its furry body.
Move action: Approach the spider, preferably flanking it with Ailetha or Harry.
Standard action: Scimitar attack (using Power Attack -2/+4 and discharging the vampiric touch): 1d20 + 12 + 2 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (7) + 12 + 2 + 2 - 2 = 21
Damage roll: 1d6 + 5 + 1 + 2 + 8d6 ⇒ (6) + 5 + 1 + 2 + (6, 5, 5, 2, 5, 6, 3, 3) = 49
He'll benefit from 35 temporary HP.
Ailetha Aurcalam |
Marek - do you have the Wand Wielder Magus Arcana that allows you to use a wand with your spellstrike? If not you might just want to make that a regular touch attack considering the damage you rolled.
Marek Ironblood |
Oo, that may be right, really sorry. I held the charge from before, and didn't realize I couldn't use it with the sword. Please consider that Marek touched it with his free hand:
Vampiric touch attack roll: 7 + 10 + 2 + 2 = 21 against touch AC.
Vampiric touch damage roll: 6 + 5 + 5 + 2 + 5 + 6 + 3 + 3 = 35 damage and temporary HP.
DM Zyren/ Heart of Runes |
The spider was ready to attack when Karlan moved in and with astonishing speed the massive arachnid drives its raptorial legs into the paladin
Ogre Spider attacking Karlan1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
Damage2d8 + 7 ⇒ (4, 4) + 7 = 15
Poison (Ex)
Bite—injury; save Fort DC 18 (includes +2 racial bonus); frequency 1/round for 6 rounds; effect 1d4 Str and 1d4 Dex; cure 1 save.
The waltz of death that is unleashed only split seconds later is a terrible thing to behold. The spider's body is ripped apart, slashed to pieces and finally drained of its vitae - without a sound the huge beast falls to the ground and lies still...
I will have to nuke you :)
Ailetha Aurcalam |
Ailetha looks at the remains of the seven legged creature.
That went better than expected.
She then turns and sees the ichor dripping from the wound suffered by the brave paladin.
That does not look good.
Ailetha looks to Celestra: I hope you have something for that.
Karlan Bladetwist |
Why? You roll so damn well on your atacks we don't have much choice but to damage race. :P
Having quickly dispatched the spider KArlan groans at the burning wound in his side. "Really what's the point of armor if they're going to hit you like that anyway."
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30 Fort save.
DM Zyren/ Heart of Runes |
Now that the bloated body of the spider lies still and thick greenish blood oozes out of its wounds, you have a moment of time to inspect the "prison".
The large rooms contains several nests where the monster has placed cocoons. Since most of them are open and contain only bones, you wonder what happened to the spider's spawns...
One of the cocoons still contains a wriggling human form, obviously, the poor one inside was alarmed by the sounds of battle.
Celestra Zomesco |
"Quick, let us free this creature in the cocoon. This could easily be one of the lost rangers!"
Celestra takes her rapier and used it to cut open the human form from the webs.
"Who are you?" She asks, "Are you one of the rangers? Are you ok?"
Celestra Zomesco |
Celestra checks to see if the man is stable.
Heal Check: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
Once the priestess is assured that he will not die presently, she will go and look around for other cocoons.
Perception: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (1) + 14 = 15
Ailetha Aurcalam |
Ailetha begins to carefully search and slice open the other cocoons knowing that her sharp rapier will cut anything within.
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
Nice - double 1's on the perception rolls, guess we do not see anything.
DM Zyren/ Heart of Runes |
The man rubs his forehead and tries to concentrate
Last night I heard their voices from there...and there... he points at two nests in different corners of the room.
Quickly you rush over to them and even though Celestra and Ailetha are unable to detect the right ones, Karlan and Alana are lucky and open those in which the ranger's companions are trapped.
Two broad-shouldered men, one with crop black hair, the other with flowing blonde are inside. Both seem unconscious and it is obvious that they need some sort of emergency care. They have tiny bite marks at different spots and even though you can't see any baby spiders, you are now sure that they must be somewhere.
Ailetha Aurcalam |
Ailetha looks over the Celestra and then Karlan:
Is it possible that the spiders are inside them? Slowly eating them alive like a disease?
Knowledge(everything): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23 <-- add +2 for planes, religion and arcane which I imagine are not relevant.
--> What do I know about giant ogre spiders and their reproductive habits.
Celestra Zomesco |
"Is it possible that the spiders are inside them? Slowly eating them alive like a disease?"
"I knew an old lady for swallowed a fly, but I doubt these guys actually ate any spiders. It is more likely to be poison from their bite that is slowly eating them alive. But do not worry, Sis, I think I have just the divine magic for the job. Let's see what happens."
Celestra casts Pick Your Poison on each of the victims hoping to transform the poison in their system into a slight intoxicating effect. She then waits and watches eagerly to see if there is any effect.
"Yoohoo! My friendly rangers! Are you there? How are you feeling? Come wakie wakie! You are among friends now!"
Alana Wayworth |
Knowledge (nature) (spiders in general)1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24 Assuming that spiders in general in this world are like spiders in ours in which case she says the following. If however I'm wrong, Alana would know and the following should be dismissed.
"I think Celestra's right. Generally, the victim is bitten so that it is injected with venom. The venom then slowly liquifies the insides of the victim, while it lays wrapped in a cocoon. Once the innards are liquified, the spider then consumes the liquid. Egg sacs are usually laid in dark corners where they will not be disturbed. Once hatched, however, mother spiders often carry their young on their backs while they are still small. Later, they would hide in dark crevices to avoid predators."
Alana begins looking up at the corners of the ceiling and motions to any furniture that might be in the room, unwilling to turn it over herself.
