DM-Salsa Presents: The Shadow Queen (Inactive)

Game Master AdamWarnock

The town of Hammenholdt has been lucky. Prosperous from trade, the town has been able to afford peace as few can.

But its luck has run out and something from the darkest shadows now plagues the town.

Female Angelkin Barbarian 1

Rayla listens attentively to Helena. "I can see a bit in the dark as well, that's part of my somewhat unusual heritage." She can see about twice as far as Helena, but she didn't want to stress that; she didn't want to rob Helena that what made her special since she couldn't normally see at all. "And it seems we have another thing in common - Sylvan I learned from actual fey, they seem more inclined to trust me than most humans. But I just knew Celestial when my one of my ancestors first addressed me in my sleep, about fourt... well, some time ago. My own experience with dark pacts were unfortunately real and not just superstition. One of the tribes in my homeland, the windgrass plains allied with devils in order to survive and acquire power. I've been... in their pocession for quite a while. Fighting for their entertainment in the arenas."

She pushes the dark thoughts away and takes a moment to scan the environment for hostile activity before she continues. "I loved the Windgrass Plains. Rolling hills as far as the eye can see, freckled with beatiful flowers of all colors, no two of which seemed exactly the same. Riding out with horse there was just... freedom. It's not the most fertile land of all when it comes to farming - my tribe includes both farmers and nomands - but it's well enough, and we have a few crops that grow well in our land.

I am not familiar with Tairesia, what is it like?"

Rayla is first amused about Delilah's cheery attitude and smiles curiously as to how close she'd get to Wilhelm but raises an eyebrow on her speculations regarding Helena's father.

"The soup is wonderful, Wilhelm. I feel much stronger and more alive already. Would anyone like to eat my meat, though? I prefer to not eat from dead animals." She spooned her plate entirely empty, except for a few clumps of meat which she put on the edge.

Kassen Battle Maps

Wilhelm accepts the thanks for the food with grace and listens as the others begin to tell their tales. He quirks an eyebrow at Kylar's terse words, but says nothing more. He laughs at Deliah's invitation, shaking his head.

"Miss, I am too old and too wise to take you up on that. Me wife would kill me dead if she heard of it. No, I just want to know where yer from. Things are hard enough as it is. No reason to be unfriendly to people who have agreed to help."

Wilhelm says he'll take the last watch of the night before cleaning up the remains of the meal and keeping the cookware away from the fire. Before he turns in, he pulls the two northmen aside.

"Ye two, I'd like to talk to ye a bit."

The witch just shrugged, "If you change your mind, you know where I am. As far as where I'm from, I grew up on the edge of marsh called the Swamp of Fell Lovers. It lies between the town of Dunmark and Inthelares. My mother and I brewed protective potions for those brave enough to travel through the swamp. Other than that, there isn't much to tell."

At Wilhelm's summons Skäne shoots a look to Bjorn afore rising up from his seat by the fire with a grumbling comment;

"Konur á lausu siðferði bróður. Engin furða að blóð frændur þeirra eru spilla með himinninn og helvíti ... Látum okkur sjá hvað Southern "visku" þetta einn vill til að deila ..."

þurstunga (Giant):

Women of loose morals brother. No wonder the blood of their kin are tainted with the heavens and hell... Let us see what southern "wisdom" this one wishes to share...

The Kaldrnordmann stoops briefly to once again re-light his clay pipe afore moving to stand tall and stoic before the guardsman;

"So Corwin's man. What do you wish to speak of?"

Kassen Battle Maps

Wilhelm leads the two northmen off a little ways from the camp.

"Tell me, do either of ye know of the Fey?" His voice is flat and low, but something in his eyes is as hard as flint.

Björn eats his stew in a few gulps from the bowl. "Mundu að ég hef borðað elda þinn og þú mitt."

þurstunga (Giant):
Remember, I have eaten your cooking and you mine.

As the druid began stripping off his furs, he noticed the southerner motioning to the two northerners. Seeing his friend rise, he grumbles and moves to join them, leaving the furs in their nest-like pile. Without so much as a loincloth, the giant man follows the other two.

At the little man's question, he rolls his eyes and turns back to the camp. "Nú er hann forvitinn um ævintýri." He mutters as he walks away.

þurstunga (Giant):
Now he is curious about faeries.

Male Human (þursfyrðar) Ranger (Freebooter) 1

Skäne smiles at his fellow Northman's comment and takes a deep draw of his pipe;

"Aye... Bjorn here knows much o' the fey. What do you wish to know Wilhelm?"

Kassen Battle Maps

"I'd like to know what yer friend was thinkin' when he claimed one. Most of the ones I have heard of would curse ye fer that, an' the last think I need is the death of a man who's too bull-headed to think things through on me hands." Wilhelm almost spits, but something in his eyes gives.

The man seems to age fifteen years as his anger leaves him. "I'm old Skane. I'm more'n twice the age o' many o' the guards that ne'er came back. Twice the age o' those lads we found in the trees."

The silence that stands between the northman and the guide is heavy with grief. The light from the fire reveals lines on his tanned face, many of them from things other than age and worry.

"Tell me, Son o' Winter, how do ye honor yer dead? Do ye spit on the ground an' turn yer back? Do ye leave ta rot, hangin' from trees? Would ye sit by while someone did that?" He ask, each word soft and even. Each word a dagger of ice filled with anger.

Helena keeps an eye on their guide but speaks to Rayla as she finishes her meal. "Tairesia is far to the south. It's a small kingdom, full of greenery and life. Our king is a mysterious figure - King Diothaean never leaves his keep, leading some to question whether he even exists. Whoever he is, he rules us well - we haven't wanted for anything since our founding 200 years ago. Or so I'm told, anyway."

She finishes, and sets her bowl aside. "I can't say much of its beauty, but what little of it I saw was wonderful. Colour is everywhere. Flowers grow by the side of every road. And the forests... the forests are a place of wonder."

Male Human (þursfyrðar) Ranger (Freebooter) 1

Skäne eyes the man impassively, mulling Wilhelm's words before answering;

"My brother is neither ill fated nor bull headed old man. The right of weregild is long practiced by the Kaldnordmannr... he merely invoked his right..."

The Northman shrugs at the last comment, clearly not thinking it anything unusual afore he speaks to his oar-brother;

"Nú spyr hann um weregild og leiðir hennar ... Útskýra lög norðri manni suður er eins tilgangslaust og barefli sverð."

þurstunga (Giant):

Now he asks of weregild and its ways... Explaining the laws of the North to a man of the South is as pointless as a blunt sword!

At Wilhelm's question on the dead, Skäne merely smiles, though his eyes belie a hard edge;

"Our dead bring their own honour Man of the South. If a Kaldnordmann dies in battle, it is his soul that is honoured... the warrior he was, not the butchered meat upon the field..."

Kassen Battle Maps

Wilhelm shakes his head and heads back to the fire. He moves with a weariness that was not before.

"I'll take the third watch." he states before laying down and going to sleep.

Deliah and Wilhelm have the third watch. Who has the other two?

Female Angelkin Barbarian 1

Rayla smirks. "If things go well for the people in the kingdom it might be best to not question the power structure all too loudly."

She rocks her head left and right and closes her eyes trying to figure out how Helena perceives the world. "Can you tell landscapes apart from their smell? I mean, does this forest smell anyhow different than those in your homeland?"

Looking at the little bird perched on her finger, Delilah says, "بهوا فرستادن." Immidiately, the thrush takes off and begins flying circles around the camp. After several laps, Ada returns to and perches on her finger once more. "احساس بهتر است؟" Cocking her ear to the small creature, the witch smiles and says "خوب." Putting the little bird back in her pouch, Delilah picks up her gear and asks Rayla, "So, were is our tent going?"

Abyssal:
"Fly." "Feel better?" "Good"

Male Human (þursfyrðar) Ranger (Freebooter) 1

As Wilhelm turns to leave Skäne places a broad hand upon his shoulder;

"Hold. If you grow weary of this world old man... let us know. We shall grant you a good death, that I can promise - one to make your ancestors proud."

The Northman's words are not threatening, but very matter of fact. His eyes honest, almost hopeful...

"Not yet. Maybe one day, but not yet. I have a son who is soon to be a father, a daughter not yet wed, an' another who is soon to be. I still have things to look forward to. I still have me family an' few years left." He says with a touch of genuine humor.

"No, I grow weary of seeing young men die before they have a chance to make their mark on this world." his face and voice once more dark. "Sleep well while ye can. Tomorrow looks to be as long as today." With that, he is off to sleep until his turn to take the watch.

Rayla is half lost in thought and watching her surrounding so keenly that for a moment she had forgotten her comrades entirely. "Right. Tent... here..." She get it from her backpack and starts spreading the staffs, herrings and fly sheets over the floor. "Well, let's get on with it... hold here, please." She starts connecting the staffs and build the tent up.

"I really don't care when to stand watch. With my ability to see in the dark it may as well be in the middle of the night."

Björn will take any watch, he doesn't need any special rest. 2nd watch has an opening; he'll take it.

The hirsute man comes sauntering back into the camp only a moment after he left, shaking his head in bemusement. Clothed only in his own body hair, he settles back into the nest of his furs. Taking out a whetstone from a pouch, he takes up his scythe and begins to strop the blade in long steady strokes. Catching the eye of any of his traveling companions who look his way, he motions at their bladed weapon with the stone and makes a come hither gesture.

He'll spend 15 minutes sharpening the blade of his scythe and 15 more on any other weapon handed to him to provide a +1 damage bonus for the weapon on the next hit.

Helena will take 1st watch.

"Indeed... those who question it often end up leaving." The girl thinks for a moment at Rayla's query, eventually replying with "Yes... somehow. The smells are indeed different. This is colder and drier - the forests back home smelled damper, more earthy. The air was sweeter, not as sharp. The water smelled fresher, and the flowers more lively. After home, this place doesn't smell as full of life." She gives a small chuckle. "Thank you for that; it's one of the stranger questions I've been asked."

While helping setup the tent, Delilah made a couple of sidelong glances at Björn. Despite the fact she was still upset by whatever it was he said back in town, she couldn't stop herself from thinking, He is built rather well, isn't he? Shaking her head, the witch contiued helping Rayla.

Male Human (þursfyrðar) Ranger (Freebooter) 1

Skäne will take first watch also

The big Northman taps out his pipe, stowing it then checks over his equipment and weaponry afore taking his turn at watch.

Almost absent-mindedly he undoes a crude stone pendant at his neck and begins to mimic Bjorn's actions with his own ax blade. Uses his whetstone for a +1 damage on next hit

He will then settle in for a stoic cycle on watch.

Kylar will join Rayla on second watch.

Kylar does not bother to pitch a tent. He has enough bedding to protect him from the night's cold, and he had always enjoyed sleeping out under the stars - or the trees under the stars, as the case may be. Some distant song from out of his elven blood resonated on such nights. After the encounter with the dryad (strange and uneasy as it had been) that part of him seemed all the stronger.

"It is a pity I don't enjoy traveling more," Kylar reflects as he lays out his bedroll. "Given how much I seem to enjoy making camp."

"I have not used magic today," he says to Skane as he lies down,"And will not need to study in the morning. Wake me for the second watch."

"Must contribute what one can."

When Skane nudges him awake in the middle of the night, Kylar remembers why he's so glad he became a mercenary wizard.

"Ah, yes. Splitting a night's rest into two parts is horrendous. Now I remember."

Still, the half-elf shakes off sleep and takes his watch. His skills with magic generally excused him from this duty - he should not complain on the rare occasions when he can help bear the burden.

Earlier, inside the tent:
Once the tent was setup, the witch stepped inside. In preparation for sleeping, she stripped off her clothing, leaving only a leather thong to cover her lower parts, except for her tail.

Hearing the Half-Elf call out, Delilah awoke suddenly, reached for crossbow, loaded it, grabbed her belt with pouches, strapped it on and stepped out of the tent. She stood topless in the cold with a leather thong covering her lower area. Her tail was in full view now, twitching side to side while she scanned for what approached.

Starting to think Helena might be the prude in a group of nudists... :P

Helena hated sleeping in her armour. But the night was cold, and the ground even more so, so she kept her robes on as she prepared for sleep.

When Kylar yells out, she awakens from a deep slumber, memories and whispers fading away as she does so. She siezes her spear and stands, her loose layers of grey clothing billowing around her small frame. With her white skin, blank eyes, and pale hair, the overall efect is almost ghostly.

A quick swivel of his head shows four goblins had leaped from the concealment of the trees. Two were before him - the other two were nearer to Bjorn.

"Tactics. The big man will be safe enough against this foe - nullify your own danger first." Kylar thinks. His fingers move in expressive gestures, and words of power flow from his throat in an ancient tongue. Snatching a pinch of powder from one of the many pockets in his robes, he throws forward his hand towards the murderous little creatures in front of him. It was an ambush, Helena. Kylar didn't know we'd have goblins to tie up - hard to plan that sort of thing. :)

Seeing that the problem had been dealt with neatly, Kylar turns to his fellows and holds up his quarterstaff to point back towards the camp.

"Rope. Tie them. We have questions which want for answers." Kylar looks to Bjorn and gives the big man a wink. "Care to demand weregild from them?"

"Here's hoping one of them speaks common."

Going to wait on the others, but I'll assume that this gets resolved before the goblins wake up. It's okay you say one thing in character and another out of character. Just let me know what you want to do.
