Halfling Rogue (Filcher) - Randall Quickstep

(I think I might have posted his information while you were compiling the list.)

I got a concept in mind. A human Saurian Shaman from the Mwangi Expanse with a Raptor animal companion. I can get him and his dino to riddleport, I just need approval that I can actually use a dinosaur focused class in the first place.

If I cannot use him it is okay. Got a few ideas. If I need a different concept, how do you feel about evil characters who are actually capable of party cohesion?

I'm going to suggest you avoid dinosaurs.

I'm not inherently opposed to evil characters but I can't promise that you'll be able to play an evil character in a way that's satisfying for you. From what I've heard this AP is largely goodly heroics.

These are, as best as I can tell, the Characters who've been posted in the thread. Concepts weren't included, basically if there was not a name and a character sheet (with one exception) I didn't include you in the list. Based on the spoiler feedback from DM Oladon, I think he's on the same page. Obviously, if I missed someone, let me know.

Human Cleric--Rut'hgar
Catfolk Sorcerer--Silverpaw Hawkstorm
Dwarven Zen Archer--Bimbur Longstrike
Elven Wizard--Jametor Darksbane
Dwarven Ranger-Gromph Deepstar
Elven Cleric--Sunic Askoor
Human Barbarian--Ghars Stonefist
Human Mage--Alern "Flare" Rikkard--Evoker
Elven Sorcerer--Algar Lysandris

I tried to add archetypes if I could tell or if it makes a difference. I don't know how all the archetypes change the class though, so if I need to update with your archetype, let me know. Gromph, I know you are waffling on your archetype, maybe?

Anyway, let me know if I messed anything up.

Thanks!

Updated List:

Human Cleric--Rut'hgar
Catfolk Sorcerer--Silverpaw Hawkstorm
Dwarven Zen Archer--Bimbur Longstrike
Elven Wizard--Jametor Darksbane
Dwarven Ranger-Gromph Deepstar
Elven Cleric--Sunic Askoor
Human Barbarian--Ghars Stonefist
Human Mage--Alern "Flare" Rikkard--Evoker

Halfling Rogue (Filcher) - Randall Quickstep

Yeah, I see it now, I missed it because of the spoiler.

DM, I'll have my backstory up later today, maybe after work, since people seem to think I am here at their beck and call. silly coworkers.

What did you do to give them that notion?

Well im considering going to Inquisitor to not step on anyones toes.. And ive already played a dwarf ranger to 17th in RotRL.. He was a beastmaster and i loved him, but ive yet to play an Inquis past 6th level so i think i going to make the switch..

@DM Oladon

In an out of character sense I'm very cautious about characters that annoy players, detracts from play, or derails things through wacky antics. That's not my intention at all. The goal here is to create a character with a clear motivation for adventuring, which is a crazy, dangerous thing to do. It just so happens his motivation is insecurity and a need for validation as opposed to money or serving a God. I usually run games, so I try to make characters people would want in their games.

In an in character sense I think Flare may be annoying to some, but not universally. Introverts and the wise and careful may want to stab him now and again. But he should also be a fun, likable person day to day who brings a lot of energy and drive to the group. I'm trying to define him through his flaws because I find those are more interesting, but he has many strengths - he's intelligent, charming, ambitious, and is deep down a good person.

Greetings, Oladon! You and I had quite a run last fall of being in recruitment threads together, even doing some fun RP in them together (with no shortage of height jokes at my poor halfling's expense...), and getting into games, but never the same game. It would be fun to remedy that here, if we could.

You say that exceptions to the core race requirement will be made on a case-by-case basis. I've been in a bit of a sneaky-rogues-and-rangers rut, and I'm wanting to play an Ifrit sorcerer of fire to blow that pattern wide open. I'm curious what kind of info you'd need to make an exception for him. He's from Katapesh, and is a loooong way from home on purpose, having made some mistakes there that ended in some fiery deaths. He suffers from some internal conflict, as the people he burned meant a lot to him, but his blood sings so when he's channeling fire. His inner demons have driven him further and further from home, and he's ended up in Riddleport, where his ability to be slightly scary and do damage to people and things turns out to be of value to certain folk.

Crunch-wise, he'd be about average for power, would do some blasting in battle and lots of elemental ray zaps.

Let me know if you think this idea simply wouldn't fit at all, or if you have questions. And if you think it's worth exploring, I'll get scribbling.

AinvarG wrote:

@Gromph Deepstar: Yeah, if he's selected, Randall can cover that role. I hope you aren't changing because of me, though.

@DM Oladon: Considering the length of time it would take for a rogue/sorcerer/arcane trickster to come together (if I take Randall in that direction), there would be plenty of time for us to find our niche if we both decide to follow that path. Randall might just go UMD to self-buff from wands, too. That might actually be the more logical choice as he comes together in my mind.

I'm not terribly tied to any particular idea, as you can tell, and the characters sometimes decide they need to go some other direction than I'd planned, so we'll just have to see what happens.

I'll try to just paste his character sheet in, but I'm not sure how well it will turn out.

** spoiler omitted **...

Yep, there are plenty of niches. And yes... things can definitely happen that take the character down a completely different path than you expected.

What's Randall's background?

Cool. I noticed that you're pretty new to the forums and have disappeared for a few months before... do you anticipate that happening during the game?

Bummer. No one seems to let dinosaurs play. One day I will run that guy.

Anyways. If the direct motivation for the campaign is simply to do good then I'll avoid a evil character too.

On a different note, how do you feel about the following classes: Cavalier, Summoner, Gunslinger, Samurai, Ninja.

Sorry for all these questions but I am looking to play something really unique and want to know my options.

My posting frequency can be pretty consistent as I use my phone for most posts. Like right now I am posting from my phone. I can at least post SOMETHING everyday provided the rest of thd game is moving.

Shanosuke, I don’t think you’re going to be a good fit for this game as you don’t seem to like busy PBPs.

Best of luck in your future gaming endeavors.

Thanks, Jametor!

First draft for Randall's backstory:

I'm totally open to adjustments suggested by other players (for interaction and synergy, friends/associates prior to the adventure, stuff like that) and the GM(s) (of course), so I'm not trying to lay out a finished product with this.

Randall doesn't know what happened to his father. And he doesn't know how he and his mother came to be in Riddleport. She spoke a few times of living a life somewhere else, a life she didn't like, and of his father whom she liked very much, but she would never discuss the gaps. Did his unnamed father come to Riddleport with her? Why isn't he here now? Asking such questions were the one thing that the young Randall knew of that would make her cry, so he stopped asking.

She worked very hard as a laundress for a few families of means, but it was hard to compete when the human women doing the same work could carry so much more than she could - by accident of nature, they could do so much more! For some reason, she did not want to be a maid or a cook in the fine homes. He was so sure life would be better if she had just done that... She was never able to get ahead, just keeping a little food on the table and a roof over their heads. Bless her heart, she worked herself into an early grave, leaving young Randall where he's grown up while she worked - on the streets of Riddleport.

With his quick hands and quick smile, he learned that he could make enough coin to keep from starving even if he was homeless, but he soon came to someone's attention. The dirty old human told Randall that he was working someone's turf and he had a choice of getting anchored in the harbor or giving what him what he'd earned. Randall handed over the coppers - and a silver! - he'd picked up that day, head down. The old human - Harvey, he said his name was - told him he'd done good and he could stay. After that, Randall would work his little cons, pick pockets when the opportunity arose, and sometimes Harvey would send him with someone to 'recover' something. That's where he learned about tripwires and poison needles and picking locks. Best of all, Harvey and "his kids" watched out for Randall. If someone caught him with his hand in their pocket, Harvey or one of the boys would distract the mark and Randall could escape. About a month ago, that stopped. Randall found out that Harvey lied, sort of - Randall had been working someone's turf, all right, but it wasn't Harvey's. Randall and one of the other boys found Harvey in the gutter, stone cold, the mark of a killer on his cheek. It didn't look like a good way to die. When Randall's mother died, she looked like she was sleeping, like she had found a peace she hadn't found before. She looked better. Harvey looked older and dirtier than ever. Mostly dirtier. He looked worse.

Since then, Randall has been trying to figure out how to get off the streets. He doesn't want to die like Harvey. He cleaned himself up and started hanging out with the 'runners' so he might get picked to run errands for a few coppers or a silver. There are even a couple of important men - they say they are - that have him run messages back and forth. They hand him a cylinder of wood or bone and make him promise not to open it. When he hands it, unopened, to the other man, he gets a silver. Yesterday's must have been very important because he got five silvers! Now he has a gold coin in his shoe and a plan. It all centers around a contest where you need a gold coin to get in...

Wow, that was much longer than I intended. Enjoy!

'course I remember you... always arguing with the Narrator. You're trouble, you are!

The concept could be interesting, and Ifrit's not an auto-no. Give us more.

I'm not opposed to an ifrit.

At least he's not a silly minotaur. =P

Who plays a Minotaur? I bet they even play him as a love machine too.

Inconceivable!

Man, minotaurs... don't get me started about minotaurs... and their players are even worse!

@DM Oladon

Well I didn't really participate in the forums until I decided to get into PbP. So my posting history prior to July is spotty because I didn't visit the forums regularly, just occasionally lurked for info on the APs I'm running.

I work a stable office job I can post from and use the internet in my leisure time. So plenty of opportunities to post and little chance of things going south. A great upheaval in my life would have to happen for me to vanish without notice.

In my defense, I made that post when in the middle of a lot of RL issues. I have had trouble with busy posting in the past and my only concern is simply being left behind.

With college and other issues out of the way, my ability to stay active in a game has increased considerably.

In a way, I don't dislike busy posting as long as I can keep up. I can now read frequently on my phone so falling behind won't be as big an issue. However, I do not plan to do more than one more game.

I am looking into this thread because you announced there will be two DMs and I figured this was my chance to get into a good game that might not die out. If busy posting is required then I will do my best to keep up and I can definitely post more than once a day.

At this point I check the site every ten minutes looking for a place to put in and I would like to see just how able to keep up I can be.

Is that Jade Regent post still going to keep me from consideration or am I going to have to open a new Paizo account just to keep from being alienated or judged by my past?

I don't like drama in recruitment threads, so I'm going to keep this brief and spoiler'd.

Up until the last bit of your post, you sounded pretty reasonable and willing to discuss your posting ability and habits. The last bit ruined it.

With the pace we're hoping this one will maintain, everyone will probably miss 10-20 posts now and then. That's to be expected, and if that's not okay, it's probably not the game for you.

I apologize to everyone on the thread. I will bow out.

DM Oladon:
Great questions, I hadn't gone there yet.

He's a young adult, barely into his 20's, but his small stature makes easy to mistake him for a human child. For those that look closely, they realize he's a bit thin for a child of his height and then that his face is obviously not that of a little boy. He hasn't tried to intentionally that quirk for financial gain, but he did receive money from well-meaning folks that thought he was a human orphan once or twice.

Most of his memories of his mother are of a tired and hardworking soul that showed him nothing but love. However, he has fond memories from when he was younger when they might go for a walk among the nice houses and find a spot where they could look out to sea past the big circle. He did not know its name then, but he's heard it called the Cyphergate by the two men he runs messages for. His best memory is when they sat watching a sail grow larger on the horizon and eventually come through the Cyphergate and into the harbor. She told of being on such a ship once and how amazing it was to come into sight of Riddleport harbor and through the 'gate. One of his regrets is he could never get her to tell him more - even the name of the ship might help him find where her journey had started, or when, but that's the last time she spoke of it. Frustrating as the lack of information is, he still likes to think of her staring out to sea and sharing this small bit of her history with him. She seemed so much younger then. He thinks he was eight or nine at the time.

For those still watching the thread (who didn't just toss up a post and then abandon us):

How often would you be comfortable posting, min and max? What time(s) of day would you be most available? Do you post on weekends?

I can post quite often, not sure what my max would be - maybe 10? If there's a lot going on, or there's banter between two characters, it's not hard to post that many times in a day. For me the limiting factor tends to be not wanting to dominate the air time and marginalize other players. That said, I don't think it works for the DM and players to wait until each poster has a turn to post something before moving on - that's the kiss of death for a PbP.

I tend to post on and off from about 7 am to 10 pm PST during the week, and once or twice a day on weekends, when all PbPs seem to slow down. The only variable on that is the occasional work trip. Sometimes those mean I have less time, and sometimes I have more time, and I always let my fellow posters know when such a trip is coming up.

DM Oladon wrote:
When you say you'd be able to post twice a day, would that be checking twice a day as well? If so, when do you usually check? "Flurry of posts" is one of the really neat things about PbPs, and it can be hard to pull that off if one or more people are always on different schedules.

DM Oladon:

This is a perfect example of where time zone differences can make life difficult; you posted the message quoted above seven hours and thirty minutes ago, but since it's just hit 09:30 hrs here I was asleep up until an hour ago. So regrettably I would've logged off to go to bed just before you posted the above message (as much as I'd love to be able to cope without sleep, I'm regrettably only human).

I check the PbP I'm in at the moment every morning when I arrive at the lab, also at lunchtime and usually in the afternoon before heading home. I also check things before hitting the sack in the evening. My posts are usually composed either at lunchtime or in the evening, which is when I'm more likely to have time to write a big post - although frankly the PbP I'm currently in hasn't afforded much opportunity for extensive posts so far, since it's a Pathfinder society dungeon crawl module (That's not a complaint about that game - simply a statement of reality).

So since my schedule is seventeen hours ahead of anyone on the west coast of the US, it could prove to be the case that I'd miss any 'flurry of posts' due to being asleep when everyone in the US is at home after work and posting like mad. I can easily make the effort to check the boards for new activity at least three of four times per day, and to post two or three times per day, but chances are there would be times when I'd be slightly out of sync. That may count me out, but there it is... :)

DM Oladon wrote:

What, no one posted while the site was down for maintenance?

I'm disappointed in you all!

Who says I didn't post?

Also, my background story is in my profile, under the spoiler tag.

I can post multiple times a day and on the weekend, I usually sit in front of a computer or tablet most evenings.

I have not abandoned you.

I can post two times a day. When working, I can usually get a post in at lunch on my phone.

If a trap is being opened, and I am not the rogue or bard, I feel my character would be quiet and may not post. In general I try to keep the game moving, and the more everyone posts, the less the GM has to carry the action. As a GM I appreciate it when players take the initiative, roll skill rolls, and anticipate situations. I often try to do the same.

Anyway, my lizadman paladin Justin just made level 6 (woo hoo). Check that alias out for my posting history.

Party role: Bimbur will be a stealthy/scout archer. He will want to be up front (think a skirmisher) so he can fire and let the melee support rush past him. He will not truly peak until level 3 when he gets to use wisdom over dex for archery.

During the week, I typically get in 3-5 posts a day (most frequently between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Eastern (US), although the times tend to vary depending on how busy I am, whether I check after dinner, how quickly the action is moving, etc. I tend to be otherwise occupied for much of the weekend, and will only get in 1-3 posts for the weekend.

Perhaps my CoT fighter and my steampunk/noir inquisitor will give you the best idea of what kind of poster I am. They also represent the kind of characters I tend to gravitate toward - damage dealers in combat, but with some effort at non-combat utility.

I would anticipate something similar for this game, though obviously have not pulled something together as of yet.

My posting rate varies wildly with the activity on the thread. I usually check a lot during the day and often find that I was the last character to post, so I don't post again unless the DM has asked for something. I have more active PBP games right now than I want to count because it would validate accusations that I'm obsessed. However, there's ample evidence of my posting rate.

Weekends can vary quite a bit - often one day or the other, I'm completely offline during the day. Some weekends, I'm online the whole time and would be checking. It's really hard to predict.

Just so everyone knows, we're probably going to go ahead and make our selections tomorrow.

Great! I look forward to playing or lurking, whichever lot comes my way. Good luck, everyone!

But my bribe hasn't had a chance to get there!!

Yeah...about that...Your's isn't gonna cash. Sorry.

Here's Asht'el, my displaced Katapeshi Ifrit sorcerer. He can shoot fire out of his hands!

Hope he clears the bar, he was a lot of fun to write about. Crunch is done except for gear, which I imagine won't be a critical point of evaluation for the campaign. But I'll work on it anyway.

Background:

“I didn’t know it would burn. I knew the workers kept the room dark, even in the daytime, but I didn’t know it was because the worms and their cocoons would burn so fast and so hot.”

These were the first words Asht’el spoke to Gilman, when he found Asht’el huddled amidst the cargo in the hold of the Riddler. The cabin boy was so startled by Asht’el’s strange words and unusual appearance that he didn’t think to call out that there was a stowaway on board. “What are you talking about? Did you have something to do with that big fire back in Katapesh?”

Asht’el continued on, as if he hadn’t heard the question, “I didn’t know it would burn. I knew the workers kept the room dark, even in the daytime, but I didn’t know it was because the worms and their cocoons would burn so fast and so hot.”

“I just wanted a place where I could be alone and play with my fire, and think what to do. I knew my father would hate me and throw me out if he knew about my taint. And the silkworms’ room was dark and quiet all the time, and the workers only went in there in the mornings, to feed the worms and harvest the cocoons. I wasn’t supposed to be in there, but I could usually slip in, and when I learned to shrink myself, it was easy to get in and out.”

Gilman replied, “I don’t know if you’re mad or magical, but I haven’t time to dally. Cap’n sent me for a bottle of the Taldan red, and I’m to fetch it quick. You stay here and stay quiet, and I’ll be back, see if I can’t bring you some leavin’s from supper.”

True to his word, Gilman returned with a small bundle of food and a jug of water for the ravenous Katapeshi youth. As he ate, Asht’el’s coppery-red hair glinted, almost sparking, even in the dim light of the hold, and his dark, dark eyes somehow seemed to have a faint luminosity to them.

Still shakey, but with his hunger slaked somewhat, Asht’el took a deep breath and said, “I must not have been making much sense a bit ago. Let me try again. My name is Asht’el, and my father is - or was, really - a silk merchant. We have – well, had – a large room on the top of our house where the silkworms lived and grew and spun their cocoons. And I destroyed it all last night. But the story starts before that.”

“I haven’t told anyone this, I don’t even know why I’m telling you, except that you helped me, and I can’t stop myself. A few years ago, I started noticing changes - changes in me, in who I am. I always thought I was human, like my parents. But I began to be able to do things, mostly things with fire at first. And my hair changed from brown to red, though not so red as you see it now, and my skin began to redden also. My parents only saw the physical changes, and somehow thought it was a part of my growing to be a man. But I knew about all the changes, and feared I was growing away from men.”

“When I was young, my father used to say that I must do as I was told, or an efreeti would come from the desert and get me. He told me of the efreet’s fiery ways, and strong sense of what was right and wrong, and I feared them, and tried to obey my father. When my…powers appeared, they all seemed to match with the stories of the efreet – making fire, changing my size, controlling strange magics. I wondered, Is this how the efreet come to get me? Not by hurting or killing me, but by taking me over, making me one of them?

“This scared me, as I wanted to be me, and live my life – and I knew my father used the efreet as a threat because he hated and feared them. He was a good man, though a strict and law-abiding one, and I feared how he would react to the changes in his son. But at the same time, I loved the feeling of using my powers. I would sneak away to my secret spots and practice making flame from my fingers, and later, as my powers grew, making myself as big as an ogre or as small as a child. I was almost caught once or twice, but I could usually bluff or bully my way out of things with the servants. And I couldn’t stop. When I made a flame dance in my hands, my blood would sing for the joy of it and I felt I was my true self.”

“To make an already long story shorter – last night I crept into the silkworm room, to practice...well, really, to play with fire. I didn’t know it would all catch on fire so easily. I wanted to see how large a stream of fire I could make in my hands. A rack of cocoons caught fire. It spread so fast, to the other cocoons, to the whole room, to the rest of the house. I stood in the fire for a moment, transfixed and unharmed, then ran from the room, down the stairs and through the long halls of my family home as it burned. One of the halls held a long mirror, and as I ran by, I saw I had changed in an instant, that the fire had somehow ignited the efreeti blood in me. I stopped and looked, amazed at what I saw. My hair was already red, but now it was as you see it, this dark coppery red, and it glints like a burning ember and occasionally flickers with licks of flame. My eyes darkened to almost black, and my ears took on these points you see.”

“The fire destroyed my family's business, and my mother and several of the servants could not be rescued. When I got outside my father saw me, and knew me for what I was. He cursed me and said I had destroyed everything, ruining the family and killing my own mother. He said I was no son of his, and raised his fists to strike me. As he did so the city watch arrived in a hurry, trying to organize the fire-fighting and asking where and how the fire had started. When I saw my father run towards them to tell them it was all my doing, I fled into the night.”

“I knew I had to leave Katapesh. I also knew that the ships that carry my father’s silk leave at first light, to catch the night breezes, before the sands of the desert grow hot with the sun and the wind shifts on-shore. I managed to sneak aboard while the crew all watched the flicker and glow of the fire in the city. So the disaster that killed my mother and ruined my father at least allowed me to stow away on your ship. Where I woke to find myself surrounded by crates of my father’s best silk, bound for who knows where. And speaking of that – where is the ship going?”

Asht’el learned that the ship was bound ultimately for Riddleport, its home port, with intermediate stops along the way. And after hearing this improbable, incredible, but clearly true, tale, Gilman was taken by the troubled but charming young man, and invited him to come to Riddleport. He offered to speak to the first mate on Asht’el’s behalf, securing him some sort of menial job on the Riddler in exchange for passage, but warned him not to play with fire on the ship, for sailors fear nothing more. Asht’el had no better plan in mind than to get far from Katapesh, and few places could be farther than Riddleport, so he accepted Gilman’s generosity.

Asht’el proved to be no sailor, but he did not burn the ship to the waterline either. When they arrived in Riddleport, Gilman introduced his new friend to his family and some friends before setting sail once again. That was almost a year ago, and Asht’el has found a new life of sorts in the rough-and-tumble world of Riddleport. His exotic air and ability to intimidate others, as well as his fire powers, make him useful to certain people in Riddleport. He has taken to working as a guard for some of the more well-to-do establishments in the city, complementing the sheer muscle of their armed guards with a touch of magical menace. It is not the life he expected for himself, however, and he dreams of doing something more worthwhile, to undo some of the harm he has done in this world.

I think I can average 3 a day, possibly more.

Gah, shouldn't post late from a phone. I'm in MST and happiest with minimum a post a day. My max is variable, but I'd get nervous over 5. I tend to check in the morning and evenings, and a few times during the work day. Weekends should be fine, maybe a little slower. Anything big and I'd give advance warning for my absence.

Added a picture and gear.

What does no one in her family realize? Why is it good?
Her whole city was sacked? That seems pretty extreme; what city was it? Was everyone killed? What motivates her -- why is she still alive?

----

DM:

well her family are pretty much all wizards and she is a sorcerer so at first when she learned magic it was difficult for her as even tough she was bright and intelligent she hard a hard time mastering basic magic (not the theory but the practise)

she didn't to disappoint but eventually she realise she was a sorcerer more than a wizard. At first she really tried to hide it from her parent (teenager's fear) but her parents although they never spoke of it, knew and never really spoke of it.

Indeed the whole city might have been extreme. Lets just say it was the caravan her parents were with. on their way to an Elven shrine.

The reason why she made it alise is simple. she wasn't there she was abroad studying Thassilonian.

About the posting question.. In my other pbps i post 3-4 times per day, every day.. More if others are participating as well.. The majority of my posts are at work between eastern time (6am-4pm) and somtimes i can sneak a post or 2 in at night if the wifey lets me.. On the weekends i check it frequently, at random times, if im not busy..

Gromph Deepstar:
What was Gromph's childhood like? Did he really begin fighting at age 9? That's quite young for a dwarf... how did he survive this long at level 1?

Last call. Decisions will be announced in 2-3 hours.

Silver Crusade

As far posting goes I post 2-3 times a day and also post on the weekends. I recently heard a podcast that talked about CO-GMing I think the idea is great for PBP. This way you get your chance to play or take a break. As far what times I post DM Oladon, I normally post in the moring before PT (I am in the Army)I check in before lunch, and check in the eveings. I hope this helps in the selection process.

DM:

He started training at 9 yes and has been doing so for the last 65 years.. Not so much directly involved with combat, but training under dwarven masters.. Its quite common for dwarfs to be in there 70s before there considered trained, depending on what class they are of coarse..

Gromph's childhood mostly consisited of helping his elders in anyway he could, constantly striving to better himself in combat training, and at the same time striving to further himself eyes of Angradd.. For hit clan worshipped the more militant dwarven diety, over Torag..
