Id argue that mechanically we ostracize them to reduce party size and avg CR reqts of the AP, but for narrative reasons we should include them, like here.
Shalelu Andosana *DM* |
Shalelu snaps her attention to the conversation, looking somewhat embarrassed. "I have about as much experience with horses as Malnival, but I will do what you ask. However, I think Harlan riding the wolf and shooting would be more... 'unique'." She flashes a rare smile, winking at the halfling.
Harlan Starshine |
I could've sworn the voice was female. Searching...
EDIT: Huh, you've always referred to Skygni as male, I never noticed and I just assumed he was a she based on protecting me in thanks. I should probably talk to my therapist about that...if I had a therapist of course. Alright, back on track.
Harlan turns to Miyaro.
"If I ride a wolf and shoot a crossbow does it count?"
Maeve Haela |
Maeve just shakes her head. "I think I can manage something. But I need to see what he says first...unless there's some traditional phrasing for this that he's required to stick to..." Eyeing Miyaro as she speaks to prompt her. . . but not really expecting it.

"It's a party ... go, eat, drink. They want to put on a spectacle, you guys watch. Let me know if it's interesting. You guys want to play in it, great. Not sure why, what are we hoping to gain from that? Become better chums with the Lord here? Hell, if Maeve just invites him up to her room, I think we're good to go with that!" Parity says, somewhat confused by Maeve's seeming anxiety.

The Feast of Three
Miyaro nods, "You are the guests of honor. Though the Five Feasts follow tradition, but there is little in the way of formal decorum to be concerned of... unlike in some other countries, like Minkai, where adherence to formality is your honor." She looks about the group with an appraising glance, nodding again. "Now, if you are ready, please follow this one. We will enter as follows..." Miyaro walks quickly but with smooth grace, gently guiding couples together in order: Malnival with Shalelu, Parity with Ameiko, Heng with Koya, Sandru with Kelda, and Harlan with Ulf at the back, leaving only Maeve alone.
Miyaro looks her up and down, with a small smile. "My lady will be first. The Prince has made a special seat for you byhis side." She bows low, signifying the great honor.

DM NomadSage |
Miyaro bows again, "But of course. This way..." The woman leads you from the foyer and through the twisting corridors of the massive palace, eventually leading you into the great room where you met the Prince earlier. Now, the chamber has been completely rearranged, filled with tables and nearly three hundred dinner guests. A herald announces your entrance, and they applaud respectfully as your procession is led up to the high table. You are shown to your places, intermixed with the favored and powerful of Ordu-Aganhei.
Maeve is led to the head of the table, where her pillow seat is set at the Prince's left side. Prince Batsaikhar remains in repose, but instead of the massive bed, he now lies on a massive pillow seat. His samurai remains standing at his back. He leans over, smiling. "What a wondrous treasure you are. Your heavenly visage rivals even the the most divine garden. Surely the gods misplaced you by happy accident." His smile widens, warmly. "You honor Us tonight with your grace and beauty."
The Prince waves in the air and a horde of servants, swarming like bees from the kitches, brings in the appetizer. Echoes of happy surprise sound through the room as the course is revealed: spicy duck heads.
Maeve Haela |
The word 'led' is probably very appropriate, as Maeve has completely locked up as realization after realization manages to come crashing in - in fact, it's something of a wonder that the normally graceful girl isn't collapsing to the floor, such is her stiffness. "Uhm...the honor is..er..all...mine your Majesty..." she manages to stammer out, reaching out for whatever utensils appear to be used to eat without seeing what it is.
DM NomadSage |
The Feast of Three
Whatever Maeve picks up, it is sticky, crispy and sweet, though a hard piece catches. Carefully spitting it out, she finds it is a small duck bill.
The feast continues as the second course is brought out a few minutes after the appetizer. The array is exotic and confusing: ox forehead, served with turtle casserole, fried chicken's feet, and a sauce of pigeon brains. The locals dig in, using chopsticks with practiced agility. There are no other utensils, and none are using their hands.
A DC 15 Dexterity check to try and manage the chopsticks.
Maeve Haela |
Feast of Three
Agreed, this is a bit much. Anyway, Dex: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
While Maeve also makes a valiant effort, in the end she's forced to concede defeat with only a few mouthfuls of rice to show for it, and not without accidentally jabbing a bit deeper into the soft dish than is really considered polite.

Dex Check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Used to manipulating things by feel, Parity easily gets the hang of it and tears in.
Malnival Selintin |
Dex Check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Malnival's fingers move the chopsticks as if they were extensions of his fingers. The magus picks his way through the array watching the locals to make sure they are eating the same thing he is.
Harlan Starshine |
Dex DC 15: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Seeing his companions struggle Harlan shrugs and begins stabbing things with the chopsticks.
"Guys this is easy, little spears! I should get some of these for chili nights, our supplies would last longer."
DM NomadSage |
The Feast of Three
As Maeve does her best to cover her struggle with the chopsticks, she notices a couple disappointed glances coming from the local gentry. They hide it under welcome smiles. Prince Batsaikhar leans over, speaking low enough for the closest dozen to hear. "Do not mind those gnats, my lovely. They will be shoveling out the horse pits by morning for their disrespect. I find your attempts at our culture adorable. Chopsticks are tricky, but you will master them in no time." His smile widens and he lies back.
***
The second course is out for a while, allowing the guests to discuss freely at their tables around the chamber. Then, with a horn fanfare, a half-dozen horses with riders gallop into the room, circling the central pond at a breakneck pace. They ride bareback, coming around until they are in front of the Prince's table, where they skid to a halt in unison. Saluting with their fists, they bellow a single kiai in his honor. The Prince claps, eliciting applause from the rest of the guests.
When the applause dies, the Prince speaks out in Tien, addressing the crowd but intended for you. "Tonight we celebrate the Feast of Three, where the Three Games of Hongal are displayed by our finest warriors. Bareback horse riding, mounted archery, and wrestling; few in Tian-Xia, or in all of Golarion, are as skilled at these as our people."
Turning to you specifically, he adds, smiling. "Honored guests, you come from the magnificent, verdant lands of the west, exotic and wondrous in our small corner of the world. We would be honored if you would display something similar from your own lands." He bows his head, respectfully.
Maeve Haela |
Maeve looks to the prince for a few moments, obviously not comprehending what she just said, before adoping a pensive expression. "No, they're right. A failure is a failure, and I should just accept that and work hard on not repeating it."
*****
Maeve stands up once the show is over, addressing the crowd in Hon-la, though the words "Varisia" "Goblin" and "Orc" can be heard...
Maeve gestures to Heng once finished with her little speech.
Maeve can't resist hamming it up, apparently. Perform Oratory: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (17) + 19 = 36
DM NomadSage |
The crowd follows Maeve's speech with a mixture of initial surprise and confusion, which slowly turns into awe. After she finishes, the entire crowd erupts into applause. Several of the locals who scoffed Maeve's chopsticking now give her small head nods of respect.
The Prince introduces his champion, Huk, who walks out into the wide space before the head table. The man is a huge specimen, bare to the waist and covered in muscles and tattoos.
For Heng: Roll initiative, whenever you're ready. First to pin their opponent wins.
Huk's Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
For Harlan: Skygni is still outside the city, so you'll have to off and track him down for the show, if desired.
Heng |
Heng looks uncertain of what is occurring as Maeve gestures to him after rattling something off in the native tongue, but quickly sees that he doesn't need to wait long before his challenge. He gets up and after taking a few stretches, bows to the prince and his opponent before taking dragon stance.

Heng moves in quickly, getting a hand on the wrestler's forearm. As silent as before, the man twists and uses his size to pull his arm free... but Heng keeps a hold, flowing with the movement. The wrestler's face remains impassive, but his eyebrows furrow momentarily.
