DM Maslen's Second Darkness PF Conversion (Inactive)

Game Master Pathfinder Maslen

The third largest city in Varisia, Riddleport is also the most notorious. It is here that the machinations of an ancient race, once again boil up out of the Darklands and into the light. The sinister plots of the subterranean underwriters manifest!

We will work it out. I have already put enough time into Flickr to ensure all copyright items are only shared with my game members. I can do the same with flickr with the URL's too but only when all my members are in the group.

I have made my profile searchable now all to make any issues you are having easier.

I have already invited 3 of you to the Flickr group.

I have a massive project due tomorrow, but should have time after I hand it in to get Flickr set up and get my character up for your review.

Found you. Added you as a friend in Flickr contacts.

that do it?

I've added my stats to my profile. I also rewrote the "Researching the blot" campaign trait to fit my backstory. Waife, could you check if that's ok with you?

Btw, the bonus granted by that trait sounds outdated to me. In PF, I can use detect magic and spellcraft anyway to identify items (even at a lower DC). Sounds like something that was maybe useful in 3.5 and is outdated in a conversion. Any plans to change that?

Marcus Whiteshae wrote:

Same for me. I am Direwolf22 on Flickr.

I'm GM_Hamied on Flickr. I just added you as a contact.

Here is my cleric. I've got the basic crunch down, but I'm still working on a backstory.

Not yet sure if I like this portrait. Does it look like those ears might be slightly pointed, or am I crazy?

I have now invited each of you in Flickr so we are good to roll on the map front : )

Yes it does on my iPhone but may need a better screen to give an accurate opinion.

Stat crunch has now been updated to reflect 20 point buy, and inclusion of a campaign trait. Will redo equipment soon.

Question: is there anything PF content anywhere that would work for the classic dagger-blade-in-the-boot-tip gimmick?

Answer: Blade boot in adventurer's armory .. swift action activate, use as off-hand weapon 1d3(s) 1d4(m) 20/ x2 crit ... treat all terrain as difficult while extended (and difficult becomes impassable)...full round to retract blade.

Hmmm, it doesn't mention anything about bring treated as a dagger, or that rogues would have proficiency with them. Would you be willing to allow rogues to be proficient with this weapon, DM_Waife? Even if not, and with th non-proficiency penalty, these things have just too much cool factor to ignore, and they are so his style, I gotta get him a pair.

Martial Weapons

Light Melee Weapons
Blade boot 25gp
Sml 1d3
Med 1d4
Crit Mod×2
2 lbs.
Piercing

This is more similar to a Punching Dagger as it is only piercing. However, it is a martial weapon so you do not get automatic proficiency.
Once you do have proficiency however, i will allow you the bonuses afforded by your Knife Masters next talent.

Sneak Stab:

Sneak Stab (Ex): A knife master focuses her ability to deal
sneak attack damage with daggers and similar weapons to
such a degree that she can deal more sneak attack damage
with those weapons at the expense of sneak attacks with
other weapons. When she makes a sneak attack with a
dagger, kerambit (page 130), kukri, punching daggers,
starknife, or swordbreaker dagger (Advanced Player’s Guide
178), she uses d8s to roll sneak attack damage instead of
d6s. For sneak attacks with all other weapons, she uses d4s
instead of d6s. This ability is identical in all other ways to
sneak attack, and supplements that ability.

I actually like this picture more, though it's a little grittier than I originally envisioned. I cannot deny that it better fits the mood of the other portraits selected so far.

Works for me. My bard is built, but I need to work out gear (and likely make a few changes, possibly the name) Backstory and description are coming, but I envision him as a caustic misanthrope, channeling his past failures into bitterness, and his considerable talents into occuping a barstool and singing for cheap wine.

I've always thought elves made some of the best glorious bastards, so I've been waiting for a chance like this to try my hand at it.

Would that be Iscarel the Bard?

The rewrite is fine Ascaria, cheers.

I would suggest that you get a +1 to Spellcraft & Use magic device checks as an update to the trait. This is equiv to half the Magical Aptitude feat and will increase to +2 for one of these skills in which you have 10 or more ranks.

Good choice.

When you have the time, please ensure that you have your equipment and funds listed on your character page please. Thank you if you already have done so.

@Ascaria

Just wondering if you have selected your Familiar, Patron and spells as yet? I am thinking you are still under the pump from your exam but just wanted to let you know what i noticed going through your character.

Think we're good. Can see the pic of riddleport now

** spoiler omitted **

Does he have to have proficiency to get the improved sneak attack damage, however. He technically doesn't have proficiency with kukris, starknives, or swordbreaker daggers either, but could get the improved sneak attack damage with them. He'd just have a hard time hitting with the -4 penalty.

I don't think I'd ever spend the feat giving Tippy proficiency with the boot daggers, unless it turns out he uses them a lot (and then I'd probably just dip a level of fighter rather than spend the feat). They're more for fun and flavour, and useful in an emergency (like if he's been disarmed or had to give up his weapons to get into this tournament, for example).

Yeah, I noticed yesterday after I had put up all the info that I had forgotten about spells, hexes, and familiar. Pretty bad for a witch o_O

Anyway, I have added it all to my profile now. I also joined the Flickr group so I'm ready to go.

Ascaria, you short-changed yourself three ability point buy points, and only have a 17-point buy. -2 +5 +2 +10 +0 +2

Just found out about the wonderful River Rat regional trait, which really helps out Tippy's build (yeah, a small bit of optimization), and I added a few fluffs into his backstory to account for it, as well as swapped out Perform - Dance with Swim. I may still have him go Shadowdancer down the road, or he may take a few fighter levels. I'll have to see how he develops before deciding.

I tweaked my stats a little, to give myself a bit more Wisdom and Constitution and a bit less Strength.

I've cracked the story nut, and will find some time this afternoon to write it out.

Here are the basics:
- Ethaniel was born from a sacred prostitute in a Calistrian temple

- He was raised in the temple as an indentured servant until the leader or a Varisian caravan begged to take him and raise him as his own son. This request was granted.

- He has no idea who his real parents are. He was never told which of the sacred prostitutes was his mother. He has even less idea of who his father is (up to GM, but it needs to be a human or half-elf, as mother was an elf).

- He grew to appreciate caravan life and had begun to regard the Varisian travelers as family. Then one day, a small band of drow mercenaries attacked and killed everybody save Ethaniel and another man.

- After the attack, the drow were desperately searching the wreckage, and they did take something from the caravan. Ethaniel hardly remembers this detail.

- The other man that was spared had betrayed their position to the drow in exchange for a hefty reward. This was particularly devastating as this man had become like an uncle to Ethaniel. He asked that Ethaniel be spared, and has kept him as a servant since.

- Ethaniel challenged the man to a duel months later and was badly beaten. Having been thwarted in his forward attempt at vengeance, he began to plot murder and offer prayers to Calistria.

- Partially out of fear and obedience and partially out of waiting for the perfect moment, Ethaniel did not enact this murder until years and years later.

- It has been three days since, and Ethaniel is a fearful wreck. He is not evil, but he has committed an evil, premeditated act and from it, he has gotten the thrill of his life. He is grappling with this, but it also on paranoid that the watch in Riddleport may discover the murder and track him down.

- Ethaniel has an ethical code that dictates he not harm innocents. Since the murder, he has been contemplating a life mission of avenging innocents that come to harm but cannot defend themselves.

- All of Ethaniel's equipment is stolen from the man he killed. The whip he wields was used to beat him for years.

- Ethaniel has almost no money, and is desperate for work. He does not want to resort to thievery.

- Ethaniel is quiet, but obsessively watches everything and everyone around him.

@Tippy

I am going to rule that he must be proficient. Reasoning, is that sneak attacks are due to skill with weapon and knowledge of anatomy. The major difference here being that getting a crit or sneak, with a round house kick for example is incredibly awesome but would be a highly skillful endeavor. Your hand/eye coordination is much more reliable than hand/foot.

That's fine. I have no problem with that ruling. Of course, instead of a round house kick, there's always the swift kick up into the family jewels approach...

The sheer fun factor of that possibilty, however, is leading me to seriously consider a one or two level dip into fighter or possibly urban ranger.

Are you okay with Chaotic Neutral? That's where my story is leading me right now, but I wanted to check as it sometimes gives GMs pause (including me, usually). I would play it responsibly...it's always important to me that I follow the trajectory of the campaign and the group.

If not, I can try to make some adjustments to Ethaniel's background. Right now, though, the murder feels like it's keeping him from being "good", however justified his vengeance against the corrupt man might have been.

Your motivations were long seeded and that murder may very well have been the climax of your alignment deflection. It may well have been the crux of your current moral stance and as so it would be fine to continue as your current alignment. We all know however that continued actions against ones alignment will shift you in time! Its in your hands.

Thanks for the hint. On checking, i noticed that my stats were inconsistent anyway. The Int field showed a 16 while the stat block showed an 18. I changed both to 17 now which should put me at 20 points. There may still be some flaws somewhere, especially with the familiar. It's the first time I play a character with one of these...

@Ascaria

Definitely check up your familiar as i see a couple simple changes required.

Do you guys have access to the Discussion and Gameplay thread or do i need to enable your access?

Backstory is up on my profile. It could use some editing, but I'll get to that over the next few days. My character sheet is rather crude in general, but I'll get it cleaned up.

I should be good to go, though.

I don't think we need special permission to post in the Gameplay and Discussion threads, but I haven't joined or started a game since they added the Online Campaign features, so I'm not sure.

Okay, i have made posts in both gameplay and discussion. Let me know if you can all see them please.

Shadow Lodge

I am there now - didn't know I made it to be part of the game thanks.

Oh and great tie in with the background I had written maybe Gaedren will be that elusive villian I'm always one step behind. :)

@Twigs

Hi Twigs. You made the game bud, do you intend on joining the gameplay thread with us or should i readvertise the position.

Oh! Christ, this is embarassing. I hadn't realised the ball was rolling. I'll start posting in the OOC thread right away!

oops. didn't know I was supposed to post it here. XD

Grumm Gær

WOW, those 2 are opposite spectrum. All out offense vs all out defense...

Shadow Lodge

I am working up a 1/2 Orc Ranger, if acceptable I will post stats. Thanks

Spoiler:
- Ta Mara - Her mother was married to a Paladin assigned to a remote out-post in the Linnorm Kingdoms northern border. The out-post was over run one day by an Orc raiding party the only survivors were three women, her mother, another wife and a ranger that was serverely wounded prior to the raid. The two wives were both brutally raped and left for dead, the ranger was never found by the Orcs. After the raid they banded together and lived off the land, both children were raised as human with limited contact, neither of them had extreme outward appearances besides the hieghth inherited from thier fathers..

I have asked the party for their feedback and if Grumm can come up with a reason to associate with the elf and halfelfs in the party, then they would enjoy a hardy barbarian in the party. If you can update your background to accept certain elves then I shall get you introduced to the party.

Thanks to the other applicants, I hope you find a game soon.

alright. I'll look over everyone's refs in a bit. just gotta do my daily chores. -on the phone-

Hello. I've been invited by STR Ranger to join this game. I'd like to play this character... 'Tam' "Darquestryder". I'm still working on this character she it is not done...part of it cut and pasted from other character alias I have here... I will work to finish him as soon as possible. Thank you for considering me for a new player.

I'm very interested in Tippy's thoughts about this. Considering the fact that I want a balanced party I don't feel compelled to take another rogue build regardless of being multiclassed. I need some convincing on this. Tippy's opinion may sway me further.

And Iscarel needs to defend his top spot as the token elf! :P

(I'm totally kidding, by the way. I dig the build. Makes me regret my decision not to go rogue. Welcome to the game whatever you decide on!)

Thx Iscarel. I have pretty much played the hell out of my paladin in the Crimson Throne game... not lawful stupid mind... but Lawful merciful to the point my party considers him to be moral but not pushy pain in the neck. Ashe kills things VERY well but is VERY reluctant to do so with out offering mercy and the possibility of redemption first... much to their dissatisfaction as they would rather let the bodies hit the floor and move on. Typical gamer kill reflex... lol!

So I wanted to try my hand at the other side of the coin... still good but not nearly so forgiving.

Tam's Ultimate build is going to look like this...

Fig 2 / Rogue {Knife Master} 6 / Magus [Bladebound] {Mymidarch} 6 / Summoner 1

I was considering Shadow Dancer instead of Summoner but it does not do what I want it to do.

Tam's history is not written down but he is... sort of 'haunted' by the deeds of his father by a shadow of the 1st Darkness that manifests as his Tam's Blackblade and his summoned creature... a nightmarish, shadowy, predatory, hunting cat... creature/thing. They serve 'Tam'... or do they have their own aggenda? His Father Tiam is an evil elf... who in his disgust with the world turned from the light and has ventured to the darklands... and with his black heart and cruel disposition become a lost elf. His father tried to turn 'Tam' down the same path... but Tam resisted and now deals with the darkness his father has... cursed him with.

Well, as a rogue who loves flanking buddies, Tippy would never say no to somebody with a vested in interest in setting them up. Now, if he starts taking away Tippy's flanks, he might find a small blade inserted just so between the lower ribs...

Shadow Lodge

LOL Tippy! Would not be an issue at his next level as he will be taking summoner and will always have a flanking buddy.. lol!

So... Can I get some info... is there an opening? This not tha last post of mine here is my character.. not total complete but very close need the personality, history, and appearance details but his equipment is pretty much done.

Have you a Flickr.com account? If not can you please make one and send me your user name. Complete your PC profile to the wealth level of 1000gp. I'm not sure how you have calculated your wealth having looked over your profile. The party predominantly seems happy to accept your build. With no tank in the party, lets hope your healing capacity is adequate. Welcome aboard Tam.
