I'd like to prepare a few more things anyway for the game, and it looks like some of you guys still need time to make characters, so lets set the start time for Wednesday!
If there are Questions, or if anyone needs help with a character, let me know and I will help the best I can.
----
Backgrounds.
This is a good time to teak and adjust characters and backgrounds. One thing I noticed is that Nightflight's mother is "Rhubarb Pie" And then there is Shepard Pie... maybe a possible relative?
====
Once your character is done if you can add a few stats to your "class" section in your profile, it will make it appear next to your name and make it that much easier to see some of your basic stats.
current wounds
current daunts
current fatigue
Charisma with modifiers (without situational modifiers)
Pace (running Die)
Parry with modifiers (without situational modifiers)
Toughness with torso armor (without armor)
current bennies
For Example, I am going to Add Nightflight's modifiers into my profile for the time being so that you can see kinda what it looks like. It doesn't have to look like this exactly, but as long as I can tell what is going on, it's fine.
Nightflight Mintleaf |
Hmm, Having some standard letters would help here,
Ws # = current wounds
Ds # = current daunts
Fa # = current fatigue
Cha # = Charisma with modifiers (without modifiers)
Spd # = Pace with Modifiers (without modifiers)
Pry # = Parry with modifiers (without modifiers)
Tgh # = Toughness with torso armor (without armor)
Bs # = current bennies
Oh, Juju Bs! Yea!
So we all know what the numbers mean.
edit, oh they showed up, they never do for some of mine in other games thought it was because of it being discussion thread.
edit I guess this can be taken as a suggestion to shorten the name stuff.
Higgledy Piggledy |
We just need to add the Numbers yes?
current wounds
current daunts
current fatigue
Charisma with modifiers (without situational modifiers)
Pace (running Die)
Parry with modifiers (without situational modifiers)
Toughness with torso armor (without armor)
current bennies
to PC sheet

Don't worry about this until your done making your character. Once your character is done I will explain how to do this for you.

POLO!
Well, I talked to the 1 player from my RL game, and he is still interested, but he has still yet to show his face on the board. Since the turn out was low, I offered another friend of mine to join yesterday, and he wants to. Hope fully he will pop up soon. My friends are noobs to play by post, so It might take a few kicks to get them going. Sounds like we're going to have another Earth Pony and a Unicorn whose special talent is healing, and that is nice and all, but I'd like it if they showed up to introduce themselves at least.
We're starting Wednesday, whether everyone is ready or not. Maybe getting into the thick of things will get everyone going?
Also, Sounds like Kobold Cleaver might join us at a later time if someone else doesn't join for the last spot.
How is your character coming Higgledy Piggledy? Did you need help with skills or anything?
Doctor Gearbox |
POLO!
Good morning dear friends. Doctor Gearbox reporting in for this adventure into the uncharted unknown of Equestria. As a great Earth Pony mechanic and inventor, I shall attempt to equip our team with the best inventions of speldiferous magnificence as possible. From the "Rock Smasher 5000" to the "Monster Rangler 9", just don't ask about the previous 8 ranglers (shivering while remembering those dark days of previous testing). I look forward to our adventures to spread the gifts of friendship and harmony to all that we meet in the days ahead.
I shall have a character sheet posted before the end of the day.
Doctor Gearbox |
Oh, that. There is only one "Rock Smasher". It just sounds cooler when you add 5000 to the end of it, and as we all know, cooler sounding things always work better. I mean which would you rather have on the job, the "Rock Smasher" or the "Rock Smasher 5000"?
DM jlord |
Ok, Doc Emmit Brown pony is here. You have to find a way to somehow quote this in the game at some point!
Artthedarklord |
GREAT SCOTT! ok, so, what am i supposed to do to get my stats above my name like everyone else? >.> cuz i wanna get this ball rolling ASAP, im super excited for this game! :D
Shepard: "That reminds me of something my great grand pappy said to me one day after he had lost his tractor"
unknown pony: "and what did such a strong and wise pony say?"
Shepard: "Wheres my tractor?"
DM jlord |
Ok, here is the gameplay thread. Obviously everyone is not ready, but feel free to post in character and start to get to know each other. I'll Help as much as I can with getting your Character's Ready.
Looks like your still missing Skills. Is there anything I can do to help?
Copy this and place it into the class section of your profile:
Ws 0 | Ds 0 | Fa 0 | Cha +0 | Spd 10 (+d8) | Pry 2 | Tgh 5 | Bs 3
If you take the fighting skill, it will increase your parry.
Art and Dan, You guys are still new to PBP, so here is what you need to do.
You need to make an 'alias' for your character. Go to the top of the site and click on "my account" and go down to "message board alias" and choose "create new alias" Then you will make a new alias. Art would, for example, name this Alias "Shepard Jeremiah Pie" for example.
Once it is created, you need to type your character sheet into the Alias's profile page.
Once that is done, you can fill this in and paste it in the "class" section of the profile:
Ws 0 | Ds 0 | Fa 0 | Cha +0 | Spd 6 (+d6) | Pry # | Tgh # | Bs 3
The boards are set up to put gender, race, and class next to character names, and alot of games take advantage of this by putting stats there instead, which is what we are doing here.
Ws 0 | Ds 0 | Fa 0 | Cha +0 | Spd 6 (+d6) | Pry # | Tgh # | Bs 3
Great job, your ready to go, I just didn't want to leave you out of the spoiler loving. Hopefully we can get this game going! :)
I will Create a Character Sheet template in my Profile to help you guys along, click my name or image to get to it. Feel free to copy paste it into your profile and then fill in / adjust the sheet as your character needs.
Nightflight Mintleaf |
Higgs pry is 3 = (2+(d4-2[for untrained skills]/2 =1)) unless he ups it of course.
This is how all the games I played in did it, though I don't have the big rulebook to confirm if it was just GM call, but the little one doesn't specify either way.
Higgledy Piggledy |
Just need to get the time GM to finish PC with skills
Are we all starting as Novice level.
Hig's is fast, like racing fast, but a but of a scatter brain, always charging off and helping any one. Hig's likes nothing more than flying, its all he thinks about say and night.
GM spells what dos my PC get I can not work it out.
I want a spell that lets him sleep on clouds or have a cloud thats a bed etc.
Could you look over what I have done so far
Nightflight Mintleaf |
As a Pegasus, Higg can do the cloud trick automatically. You do not get to have spells. Instead of spells you get feats of Daring.
You start with 0 exp. Novice, veteran, etc aren't really levels like DnD, they are mostly for requisites. You can spend exp as soon as you get it(normally at the end of a session) to buy skills, edges, etc even if not at the next rank, or save them up to buy something.
Skills:
Fighting is based on strength, to have your fighting dice higher then strength would require 2 points per die size above strength rather then 1 point.
Spellcraft can allow to know about magic but not use it, that is reserved for unicorns.
Feats of daring:
You get 1 feat of daring plus one each time to gain a rank. You can also take edges to give you extra feats of daring.
Pace: Pace is a set number then the dice is rolled for running. (For you it is, walking: 10, running: 10+d8.)
Parry is 2 + half fighting(for you is 5).
Toughness is 2+ half vigor(for you is 5).
Money:You have 74s remaining
Edit: I don't think your name is Nightflight Mintleaf by the way.
Kobold Catgirl |
I may be able to join in sooner than I thought. Just gotta make sure the footing I'm on is even.
So we have here...well, I'll go over what charactrs are what and try to think of an idea. I'm currently thinking an earth pony or pegasus--I was thinking an ancestor of Berry Punch, but I realized it'd be kinda presumptuous to try be related to a fanon pony. Especially the one who is the best pony. ;D
EDIT: By the way, it's kinda ironic that I'm being held off from joining the game because I'm writing a fanfic that is basically set in the same setting (albeit with different crises, and no doubt created with a different headcanon).
Well, not ironic. Funny? Coincidental? Meh, nobody actually knows what irony means nowadays. I say it means pony. It has the same last three letters an' evurthin'!
Anyways, I'll quit babbling about this self-indulgent nonsense. I have a self-indulgent and arguably nonsensical PC to plan!
Kobold Catgirl |
Okay, having gone over the stated PCs, and not wanting to make that post any more Edit'd....
First off, I like that Shepard is more connected to the rock farming than the parties of a certain later generation. Makes a lot of sense. I'm just commenting on it because things keep reminding me of my fanfics, so I want to get all that silliness out of the way so I don't ramble about it later. I know it looks like some cheap bragging or something, but it's more about me being an obsessive person and finding ways to connect all my interests, no matter how flimsy the connections may be*.
Anyways...
First off, having seen Shepard Pie (who I actually do like, despite the tone of this sentence), I'm rethinking my very short-lived "relation to a minor background pony" ban I imposed on myself.
Let me know which of these three you feel would fit best, or that you don't have a preference. :)
1. Gary Crunch, a tavern-brawler-turned-grumbling-innkeeper who gravitates towards things that annoy him. Gary complains a lot and puts up with a lot. His special talent is in his extremely strong jaw. He is very tolerant of pain, and very loyal.
He is, however, loud. He goes between just speaking loudly and outright shouting very easily, and he also carries wherever he goes a large assortment of brewing supplies. Ironically, he always forgets to bring the actual ingredients.
Quote: "WHAT?! *clank* Shut your trap, I'm PERFECTLY capable of stealth! *clank* I JUST NEVER NEED IT! *clank* That reminds me, I'M SICK OF YOU LOT COMPLAINING ABOUT THE BREWING SUPPLIES! *clank* SOMEDAY, YOU'LL NEED THEM, AND..."
2. Repetpeeve Petitive Parroting, a highly talkative earth pony 'road pirate'. Speaks in an insufferable Trottingham dialect, made even more insufferable by two factors. First, by the fact that the dialect doesn't really exist yet, and second, even once it does, it isn't going to sound anything like how he talks.
Peeve, as he is known, travels on an extremely poorly-built cart. He keeps a number of parrots, for no clear reason. He calls himself a pirate, but has no idea what pirates actually do.
Peeve isn't the brightest knife in the shed, to put it kindly. His memory is terrible--he has no idea why he has the parrots, nor does he know his actual name. He conceals this underneath an extremely dramatic persona, never giving anybody time to work out that he's really making things up as he goes along.
Peeve's special talent is imitating voices, though his absent mind tends to accidentally combine them--ie, Rarity with Applejack's accent.
The memory lapses may be unnatural, may be due to a mental disability, or may just be Peeve being Peeve.
Quote: "Arr, what the bloody bleeding heavens is this jolly good show here? I say, gov, bloody bewildering! I'm getting well peevish, if you see, old sport? Ahah, good show! How about a spot of hay before we hit the hay, as it were?"
3. Shifting Slates
A pegasus who studies rock formations, though few know it. Her education is concealed beneath being literally afraid of silence. She will chatter endlessly to avoid it, in fact. May or may not be loosely related to the Pie family (given the interest in rocks, and perhaps also the similarities to a certain pink mare). Her fear of silence may be linked to something serious, or it might just be a strange quirk--up to the nature of the campaign.
Shift's special talent lies in detecting rock- and ground-related hazards, such as quicksand--and avalanche zones. Which is good, since she tends to trigger avalanches rather quickly.
Quote: "Wow, why isn't anybody saying anything? That thing over there is pretty neat, if you ask me. I don't know what it is, do you? Well, that's cool, whatever it is. Sorry, I didn't understand it, but I'm sure it's cool, a lot of stuff is. I really don't mind looking at stuff I don't understand, I think it's illuminating. Do you think it's illuminating? Hey, what would happen if a huge eagle came in and picked me up right now?...well, I expect it would..."
*After seeing the preview for It's About Time, my first act was to post a Homestuck reference. See? I'm hopeless.
Nightflight Mintleaf |
Higg your parry is now 4, from you lowering your fighting.
I like Shifting Slates the best,(she is...grating on the ears though. lol) Granted I am not the GM either, but that's my vote. :)
Kobold Catgirl |
This is the second time today I've made a stealth pun without knowing it. "Grating"...heh...
By the way, Spugly, can I recommend that you put what your character says in quotes? "It makes it easier to tell when characters are speaking, is all." Another common custom is to Bold the speech, but that's a practice I myself always forget.
Nightflight Mintleaf |
All my current games(8, including this one) require bold in game thread and all but one use quotes as well, for all aloud speech with italics for thoughts and bold italics for projected/shared thoughts, and telepathy.
DM jlord |
Looks good Higgledy Piggledy. Feel free to post in the Gameplay Thread Whenever you are ready.
Thanks Nightflight for helping the others out, Helps alot.
Kobold Cleaver, I'm not really feeling Repetpeeve Petitive, But both Shifting Slates and Gary Crunch I'm liking. I want to say I like Shifting Slates better, probably because she is a Pegasus, but I'm afraid that the rock focus might be too much simmilar to Shepard Pie. Not sure if it will be, since he hasn't posted his character yet... Hint Hint.
Since only two of you have posted in the Game thead, I'm gonna give some more time for you guys to get in there and post. I'd love everyone to post before I continue but at the same time I don't want to leave those who are ready hanging, so as soon as you can post please do. Even if you are still working on your character.
DM jlord |
For in the game play forum:
"I would prefer bold type for speech. Make's it pop out immediately. I'm not going to require "quotes," but it does make it look nicer.
Italics for thoughts. Sometimes puting your thoughts out loud can help convey things you want others to know about your character without your character coming out and saying it.
This is for out of character notes and blurs.
The way to make these happen is by using BB Code, which is located underneeth the new post box. Hit the "show" box next to the words "How to format your text." to see how to do it. Its really easy once you try it.
Kobold Catgirl |
One possibility is that Shifting Slates works part-time with Shepard as a sort of consultant, applying her knowledge in geology and sense for danger zones to what I assume is a rock farm. Alternatively, Shift could be a wilderness guide. To be honest, I think that's the best route, as long as it works for you. Only thing I don't like is it means I have to rename her, but I'll work summat out. :P
Lark Lighthead |
I think shifting Slates is an awesome enough name to not care if it perfectly fits her talent, but that's just me.
I really like it...it might well work still. But I do rather like Lark Lighthead. Lark has meaning in "larking about", and Lighthead is naturally a reference to what happens at high altitudes.
It's a really hard choice (I've gone back and rewritten this paragraph about four times now) but I'm going to switch back to Shifting Slates.
The great thing about this is that if I can't use a character in this game, I can always apply it to one of these silly stories I write. ;)
If it's alright, I'm going to post in the game thread. I haven't designed the character stats yet--I'll do that sometime tomorrow. System seems fairly simple, shouldn't be too hard.
Lark Lighthead |
Lark has been, I believe, completed! Quite a nice system, really, quite a lot of roleplaying stuff in it. Only thing I don't think I like is that Charisma is represented in stats--I prefer the style of Grimm or Swords and Wizardry, where all roleplaying is handled by roleplaying, rather than dice. Seems it matches the MLP style better. :P
I'll write up the backstory and such tomorrow.
Nightflight Mintleaf |
Lark, why do you have 5 hindrances? Nothing wrong with it just curious.
And it's your choice but the Phobia hindrance fits better then having Habit(Both can be taken as major for that last point).
Kobold Catgirl |
Phobia and Habit were both considered. I can't remember why I settled on Habit, since Phobia both fits better and has a more fitting effect. I'll change it, thanks for making me rethink. :)
I took five Hindrances because I found they all fit what I had in mind, and I thought they might give the GM ideas. Plus, problems make an interesting campaign. ;)
DM jlord |
Shepard Pie, You should get over to the gameplay board and start playing. Everyone else has. Also, you need to add the rest of your character's stats, assuming that you are finished.
Dan, are you still with us?
We have one more player joining us I suspect we will see him on the discussion boards soon enough.
Lark Lighthead |
First,
Minor Enemy: Lark has a minor rivalry with a secretary for one of the upper nobility. She targets the secretary with minor pranks and by waking the unicorn up very early with loud noises, and the secretary retaliates by subtly raising Lark's taxes (making Lark a bit penniless) and keeping an eye on Lark. If the pegasus gets into even the slightest bit of trouble with the law, charges will escalate easily.Second,
Minor Geas: Lark visits her father once every month, bringing with her supplies and gifts. If she does not spend some time gathering the supplies she'll need, she starts next session with -1 Bennies.
These are okay, right?
Shanosuke |
Okay I have spent some time thinking on my character.
He is a Unicorn and instead of calling him TriCorn, I am calling him Element Al.
Element is a gifted unicorn from the Kingdom of the unicorns who was a student of Clover the Clever (Or Star Swirl depending on the timeline) Element's unique unicorn power was control over the four elements of nature. A rare sight in among unicorns. Elemental would practice tirelessly to learn all the ways in which he could manipulate the elements. In time, Clover(or Star Swirl) would decide that Element needed to broaden his horizons and gain new experiences. Now that the three tribes were at peace, Clover thought it would benefit Element if he went to Trottingham and used his powers to aid in the settlements development.
Element loved the idea though there was one thing Clover worried about. Element was known to be overly curious. Even to the point where he could be dangerous. She hoped that life outside of the comforts of her care might cure him of this but who knows. At least if he works hard, he may be able to stay out of trouble and simply get better at what he knows. We'll see how things go from here.
I have built a basic concept but I have limited options on how to present him. If you ask I can tell you a few basics if you want. Otherwise there is all the fluff
Agility = 6
Smarts = 10
Strength = 4
Vigor = 4
Spirit = 6
Skills:
Investigation = 6
Notice = 8
Persuasion = 6
Streetwise = 6
Taunt = 6
Knowledge Elements = 6
Spellcasting(Arcane) = 8
Hindrances:
Curious
Bad Eyes
Edges:
Arcane Magic
Arcane Powers:
Elemental Manipulation for Fire, Water, Air, and Earth.
That's all the big stuff. I am still new to this so I will accept any advice.
Description:
Element Al is a young stallion. His coat is shade of light grey and his main and tail are long messy and are striped with a colour representing each element. His cutie mark is the elemental diamond with each corner being an emblem representing the four elements. He is rather skinny and a bit frail but definitely looks intelligent. He wears glasses to help him see.
I will make an Alias shortly. Just wanted to get this stuff out here.
Element Al |
Okay I made an alias using the stuff from above. If there is more I need to add or things I need to change let me know.
I am still new to the system. I will start posting in the gameplay thread when my backstory and build are approved.
Nightflight Mintleaf |
Element, from your Hindrance choices you have 3 points to spend. It costs two points for an edge or attribute increase and one point for a skill increase.
Also for magic, you pick 1 cantrip per rank of spellcraft plus magic trick.
To learn any magic above that you need to take the "New Spell" edge and select a spell. Telekinesis Major might work for you or you can take element based spells like Air Envelope. Either way your cutie mark can lend it's help when dealing with the elements.
edit: Almost forgot, Knowledge Elements won't really help you. The game is rather simplified, so a spellcraft roll would be used instead.
Shepard Jeremiah Pie |
Shepard Pie, You should get over to the gameplay board and start playing. Everyone else has. Also, you need to add the rest of your character's stats, assuming that you are finished.
yep, finished, just was having some trouble with the formatting, but i figured it out and posted in game play :D which oddly didn't have any flags showing that there were new posts or i would have been there sooner. all my ducks are in a row, and im ready to roll! :P
Nightflight Mintleaf |
Higg, you have 4 edges, but as far as I can tell you should have 3.
If you were looking at mine the Noble edge gave me Rich for free which is why I have 4.
You put the magic trick text for your cloud trick description which isn't really needed. It's fine to include it but you should note as a racial trait under pegasus rather then as magic, it might be confusing for the other newbies.
Element Al |
Um....sure....whatever you say....whatever that was?
Okay The three points I got from then Hindrances resulted in an additional Edge and a skill point. Are knowledges really useless? If so then I guess I will move the point into spellcasting as you suggest.....though I am still not a hundred percent clear as to what spell casting does.
My two Edge choices were Arcane Background magic, and new power
So my four powers are Elemental Manipulation for Air, Earth, fire, and water. One of each.
Also, where do I find Cantrips? I do not see them in the Hero lab demonstration.
Also, how does my Cutie Mark help? Does it have mechanical rules?
EDIT: Also, after reading the gameplay thread, I will say I have been sent by Clover the Clever as her Protege to assist Baroness Cookie. If GM approves of that backstory. I am nothing more than a student in training looking to test my new abilities.
