Dungeon Master

Folks, I am concerned aboot Mantooth. We have not heard from him in weeks. The problem is that he has become near indispensable for this group.

Male Gnome Sorcerer/9 - (HP: 49/49 - AC20;FF17;T18 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

For this battle, he will be absolutely necessary. If he does not reappear, then we can find a replacement after we finish with the dragon. I am sure I can find someone willing to play a paladin or similar martial character. For now, I have no problem playing him for the time being although I prefer not to if we can get him to log on.

Thordak - do you know if he is about and whether he wants to continue with the campaign?

Liberty's Edge

Rapier: +15/+10 (+6 BAB, +6 Dex, +1 size, +2 ench); Bow +14/+9(+1) (+6 BAB, +6 Dex, +1 size, +1 bow/+1 acid arrow)

Thordak--I agree you should take the cloak. Weapons/armor are pre-sized, but most others are not, and resize for the user, unless DMHW rules otherwise?

I'd hate to see Mantooth go. anyone know him personally and able to check on him?

Male Gnome Sorcerer/9 - (HP: 49/49 - AC20;FF17;T18 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

Thordak, Mantooth and Matthais were all classmates in DMHW's class a few years ago, that was why I asked if Thordak could get in touch. Not sure whether they go to the same school or not.

Dungeon Master

I just send Mantooth an email. Let's see if he responds to that. It is true that Thordak, Matthias, and Mantooth were all previous students of mine, who I taught how to play D&D during their senior year. Now Mantooth and Matthias are seniors at University. This must be Thordak's junior year, but I really cannot believe time has flown by that fast! Tell me it is not true.

Well today I had a blast at a Scottish Country Dance down in central Vermont. We had such a good time. I am tired now, but feeling great!

I'd like to take a moment to state I'm very happy to have aced that roll ;)

Dungeon Master

I admit, you guys have been very lucky when it comes to get the rolls you need when the time comes.

Hey guys, I am actually in my sophomore year :). Also, I will talk to Mantooth. I am sure he wants to continue, I think at this time it may be difficult because I know I just finished midterms and he may be in the same boat. I'll get in touch with him though.

The disguise could still work if you read between the lines. The skill itself allows for appearing as a different race with only a -2 modifier, and using Disguise Self gives you a +10 bonus on creating a disguise. Though the black dragon would probably get a +10 bonus on attempting to see through the deceit due to it's familiarity with the Wyrmlord.

You're probably right. It was a fun idea fr about 20 seconds. :-)

Coming from a guy who had his barbarian do a raging flying death from above jumping charge solo on a giant and fluke out a greataxe crit - I'm a big believer in aim big and miss / hit big ;)

It would essentially come down to an opposed check - your disguise / bluff vs the dragon's perception / sense motive. If you lose then it's chew toy Bofus :P

Dungeon Master

I received an email from Mantooth and he is going through some difficulties in his life. He hopes to be back soon, but he needs a little time. So let's proceed as we have been and have Tirion kindly post for him until that time. I'm sure he will appreciate that.

Dungeon Master

I cannot find where it was stated about the Energy Resistance the pair of dragon eyes offer. Can any of you find that information. I believe that D. M. Harpwizard told you about the gems back in Brindol.

Well, I am off to see Rush again tomorrow night in Boston and I've talked Thordak into showing up. He got a ticket for the adjacent section! This is going to be a great night! Please forgive me, but posting may be a little light until I return on Thursday.

It's DR10 from two eyes.

Thordak - it should be Resistance 10. DR is reduction to melee/ranged damage. Resistance is reduction to magic damage.

No problems DMHW - I've edited in an action.

Hope the concert was/is/will be good.

Dungeon Master

It was fantastic! They rocked the house last night! Thordak even showed up and shared a seat at my side! What a blast!

So, on bardic music and skill checks . . . I would recommend "no" on that. The reason is that bardic music is essentially spell-like effects. Having skill chekcs enhance them opens teh door for other spellcasters to use skills to enhance their spells, and potentially mess up game balance in unforeseen ways.

while it would seem cool, sometimes gameplay/balance has to trump cool, savvy?

Male Gnome Sorcerer/9 - (HP: 49/49 - AC20;FF17;T18 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

Na - it is fun. You should see how I referenced the party bard in my campaign.

DM Chaos wrote:

And finally, you all hear the tapping feet of your party entertainer and while you cannot fathom why she would decide that this is the best time to start dancing, the sheer ludicrousy of it makes you all smile which gives your blows a little more power and accuracy.

I did not use a check, but one could just as easily do a perform check and then have fun describing the beautiful/comical performance you put on. Performance checks are fine for color, as long as there is no chance of crit/failure.

that's fine wiht me, I agree 132.5% Adding in mechanics, though, that's when trouble can start.

so, I'd like to ask y'all something. In a different PBP we've just been joined by a new player.

I am finding this character to be so silly that it breaks believability. What I mean by that is, I cannot see how a "normal" person would want ot adventure (read: put your life in the hands of others) with this individual.

how do you tell someone this?? I was having difficulty with this campaign to begin with, and now I'm actively contemplating quitting. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Dungeon Master

Ok friends. Do not worry, I will not let the Performance role affect the outcome, but if I do it, it will simply be for some extra color.

Male Gnome Sorcerer/9 - (HP: 49/49 - AC20;FF17;T18 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

Personally I would PM the DM and express your concern. If you feel this way, then I am sure that others do as well.

Bofus, feel free to PM me if you want to avoid posting something. As you probably know, I am in WAY too many campaigns and might know some of the other players and be able to help you.

Not in use

Bofus - I'd PM the DM, and also PM the other members of the group letting them know that you have a concern and asking them (off the main record) whether they do as well.

Dungeon Master

Sorry for the delay folks. I need Thordak to post before I resolve and repost the next round. I've been keeping an eye out, but haven't seen it yet.

Male Gnome Sorcerer/9 - (HP: 49/49 - AC20;FF17;T18 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

Want me to post for him? Let me know how long you want to wait.

Dungeon Master

Well, today I am off to a soccer tournament to watch my son play in about four games in a row. More if they win. I'm bringing the lawn chair and my binoculars and I will good to go. My only problem is that my voice is still sore from all the shouting and cheering at the Rush concert!

Male Gnome Sorcerer/9 - (HP: 49/49 - AC20;FF17;T18 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

Have fun.

Dungeon Master

Hey folks, we have hurricane Sandy coming up the east coast working its way towards us. How is everybody doing?

Male Gnome Sorcerer/9 - (HP: 49/49 - AC20;FF17;T18 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

Bah - you live on top of a hill.

Fortunately I do not live near the lake shore, supposed to be 20' waves on Lake Michigan (1000 miles from the seacoast for anyone wondering) which are supposed to make a mess of things.

Dungeon Master

While we are updating, I thought I should do a check in and see how I am doing. I always appreciate honest feedback in case I have any misconceptions on how things are really going. So, please let me know how you really feel. : )

1. How are you enjoying the story and the plot? Are you getting enough direction yet?

2. If you suspend disbelief in the fact that this is a fantasy game, do you feel like this is a believable world with interesting characters and situations? Who are your favorite characters?

3. I thought this would be a very challenging adventure, but you seem to be handling it with apparent ease! So I need to ask you, do you feel sufficiently challenged in this adventure?

4. I have mostly been creating the battlemats myself and they do not have as much detail on them as I would like, but those are the time issues I contend with. So I ask you, how do you like the battlemats?

5. I know this submerged City of Rhest has had a lot of monsters in it, but overall, are you getting a good balance of battle and role-playing?

6. I know I have trouble keeping up with the campaign journal and experience points, but other than that are there any logistical communication things that we could improve upon?

DMHW: Will you let me know when/if Lulu levels up? Thanks!

Any recommendations for a feat? I am thinking about great cleave, mounted combat for mounted archery, deadly aim, or precise shot for improved precise shot and then pinpoint targeting. The idea of a flying dwarf crossbowman sounds pretty daring, but could come in handy with dragons...

Sorry guys, Haven't posted much recently, but had a great time seeing Rush with DMHW and his friend from home, also I've been busy this weekend with Halloween and before it with making my costume! If you care to see it, here's the link to the album.

Dungeon Master

Mantooth, for 7th level, Magnimarana becomes a keen blade! This gives critical hits for rolls of 18 - 20. Be sure to update your character sheet!

Male Gnome Sorcerer/9 - (HP: 49/49 - AC20;FF17;T18 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

Bofus, I already have Spell Penetration. I could take Greater SP, but really am becoming more of a buffer. Another option is to take Spell Focus(conjugation) and then in 2 levels Augment Summoning together with some summoning spells.

Another possibility would be to take Extend Spell. Can't use it on Haste yet, but next level it would make Haste last 12 rounds instead of 8. Although really, for 3000 I can just get a Rod of Extend which would do the same thing without wasting a feat.

Also, my spell selection is posted above.

Wow - sweet. 17-20 crit range is awesome when combined with Smite evil and the other buffs we have.

Dungeon Master

I thought a normal longsword was 19-20 Crit so a keen blade would be 18-20 Crit. Where does the 17 - 20 crit come from?

Male Gnome Sorcerer/9 - (HP: 49/49 - AC20;FF17;T18 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

Keen, just like Improved Crit feat doubles the crit range.

x20 --> 19-20 -- 5% to 10%
19-20 --> 17-20 -- 10% to 20%
18-20 --> 15-20 -- 15% to 30%

This is not the same as increasing a weapons damage by one category as occurs when you enlarge someone or use Lead Blades.

DMHW--Tirion's right. Keen longsowrd crits on 17-20.

Tirion--duration of haste is fine, as your levels progress duration of round/lvl spells will far outlive combats. How about Imporved Initiative?

spells: Ray of Enfeeblement is bada$$. How about Dispel Magic? heroism might be fun if you wnat to concentrate on buffing more. Displacement is nice. Or slow.

Thordak--I think precise shot is good to shoot for (pun intended) if you're going to be using xbow a lot.

Male Gnome Sorcerer/9 - (HP: 49/49 - AC20;FF17;T18 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

And I think I'll go with:
Extra Hex (Misfortune) as the feat.
