Ishta Khosiv |

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Ishta translates what the woman says. "She's got some deal with the orc, and feels betrayed. Sadly, well have to take her down now, and this will buy him time."
Then suddenly she hears a vaguely familiar whisper in her head. Too many questions, no answers. Too many flashes, no real memories.
Frustrated, Ishta is about to snap. She holds for just a few seconds, only to check if her comrades are in for the fight.
If the rest of the party is ready to attack, she'll use the Mnemonic Vest to cast Haste .
Also, sorry, I messed up with the map by trying to check it out from my phone. I swear, last time in my life I try that, it always ends up horribly bad.

DM Fang Dragon |

A dry chuckle echoes down the corridor, followed by more deep, gravely and savage sounding words...
As you make your preparations for battle, the vampire strains at her bonds and the links of the chain groan in protest! Not in combat yet, but surely it can only be heart beats away?

Azarra |

Darn, you're right on the Knowledge Religion roll, sorry. I think my mind is on permanent vacation or something. Gah.
Azarra keeps singing, and casts Protection From Evil on Kardas. Then she moves further into the room (with the extra haste movement).
I moved everyone up to the right area because everyone was still way down the hall even though some have mentioned seeing her, so assuming everyone followed. Attack if you can. If she gets free, we're vampire pudding pops.

Zane Levallis |

Zane didn't let the revelation of the vampire strike fear into his heart, though he did realize that this created two potentially deadly foes. As the others began to prepare for the imminent battle, the priest called upon the Morninglord's divine blessings, casting a spell that would enhance his companions' combat prowess as it detracted from the vampire's own.
Cast Prayer

Ser Armithia-Seendren |

Ser Armithia prepares to defend against the appearance of the orc!
She is undead and evil. Don't let her loose.

Azarra |

Responding to Ser's comments, Azarra says (still using message despite all the other noise that has happened in the meantime) She IS going to get loose, no matter what I do. We have to kill her immediately.

DM Fang Dragon |

Realising a fight was about to break out Ishta found a battle spell on the tip of her tongue. Tapping into the power of her new robe she whispered strange sibilant words that warped the flow of time like molasses. It seemed as if the Vampire slowed down visibly, or perhaps the flow of time made the rest of you move incredibly fast!
With a ferocious snarl the woman throws herself back at the chain only for it to stop her instantly. She falls down cursing before returning to the statue and kicking it in a fit of pique and hurting herself. Eyes going wild she sprinted towards you and this time a chain link snapped with a tortured squeal and she was free and hungry!

The vampire attacked with such rapidity after Ishta and Ser Armithia led the charge that Zane was slow to react, watching the half-blood's head snap back from the impact with the vampiress. Knowing the terrible fate that awaited them should the woman prove victorious, the priest called upon the divine power of the Morninglord, the rosy pink holy symbol emitting a brilliant light as positive energy surrounded them.
Channel Energy (harm undead): 3d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 5, 1) + 6 = 18
DC 15, no Channel Resistance per Sun's Blessing
The cleric then stepped up next to Ishta, hoping to give her an option to retreat should the vampire try to continue to attack the arcanist.

Ishta Khosiv |

Fort Save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Ishta is surprised as the vampire lunges forward and connects a blow. She feels something inside eating her soul, as if draining her from his life force. She quickly steps back, leaving the bulk of the combat to her friends, while thinking of something to do that could revert the dire situation they're in. For now, she is contempt just taking care of herself and feeling a bit guilty for it.
Protection from Evil on herself.

I am guessing that this is the proper place for my arrow attacks posted above. Sorry for jumping the gun.

Ser Armithia-Seendren |

DM Fang Dragon |

The vampire reveled as she sucked in a portion of Ishta's life force, snarling into her ear, "I going to suck you dry, and then you will be MINE!"
Kardas flinched at the ferocity and momentarily didn't know what to do. Zane called upon the grace of The Morning Lord and a wave of rosy red light spilled over the battlefield. Instinctively the Vampiress stopped the stand in a shadow limiting the damage done.
Will Save: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17 <--- PASS
Feeling the pull of the grave, Ishta steps back and casts a spell to ward herself. But then Ser Armithia called upon the stern judgement of Helm and He found her wanting. In the sepulchral gloom, Ser Armithia's sword was limned with Helm's glowing wrath. The vampire recoiled but Ser Armithia was faster and his sword smote into her, once, twice, thrice and it was done. Her body was a smoking ruin and in moments there was nothing left but a roiling cloud that seemed to be moving of its own volition...
Ouch! Combat over. Ishta you have two negative levels.

Ishta Khosiv |

Okay. I'm gonna look for the rules to check how f*&%ed up Ishta is on my way to work and will post when I'm back.

Ser Armithia-Seendren |

Thank you for the nice description!
Ser Armithia positions himself on guard duty against any incoming threats. The Paladin nods to his friends; his only comment of the encounter.

Azarra |

Good job Ser!, but she's not dead. That cloud is her. Do we have anything that can affect it? Zane... maybe channeling will still work? Don't let her heal and come back for us!
Azarra moves to avoid catching her allies in the 15 foot cone, and casts Sonic Scream, hoping to harm the vampire even in her gaseous form.
SS damage: 4d4 ⇒ (1, 1, 2, 1) = 5
(the spell lasts three rounds so, if we are out of combat, Azarra continues readjusting her position and screaming till it is over, following the cloud if necessary)
SS damage round 2: 2d4 ⇒ (4, 3) = 7
SS damage round 3: 1d4 ⇒ 2

Zane Levallis |

Zane shrugged, completely out of his element as far as the vampire's abilities. He had spent his time studying the history of the Moonsea instead of delving deep into faith and the undead. He did, however, follow closely at the half-elf's side, mace clutched in his hand as they followed the roiling mist to its destination.

Kardas Rasalas |

Kardas huffs and pants as the gaseous form of the vampire escapes his sight. "Ah, why isn't she dead? Why isn't she dead?!"

DM Fang Dragon |

Actions?

Zane Levallis |

Zane's shoulders sank as the vampire cloud continued on, the priest taking the time to give Ishta a once-over. "We'll get you patched up whole when we get back to the City proper."
The cleric would follow along with the others if the mist stayed in visible corridors, trying to corner it wherever it might lead them. If it went out of sight through cracks in the wall or floor, he would suggest they continue searching this level before going down the stairs.

Ishta Khosiv |

Spellcraft, negative levels: 1d20 + 14 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 14 - 2 = 32
"Quick! The coffin! Let's go there!" Ishta waves her hand to her comrades, signaling them to follow, while she carelessly - and weakly - runs to the coffin they've found out some minutes before.

Ser Armithia-Seendren |

Knowledge (religion) (Int): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
The Paladin frowns.
He follows their Arcanist.

DM Fang Dragon |

As you start to move, the cloud pauses and then reverses it's direction and then starts to flow down the stairs...

Azarra |

Did my sonic scream damage the cloud as an area effect?
Azarra sticks with the cloud.

Zane Levallis |

Zane shook his head as the fog reversed course, eyeing the stairs with unease. "Let's keep up, friends, but keep your eyes open, as well. It likely wouldn't go this way if there weren't nasty surprises in store for us." The priest heeded his own advice, looking about for any traps and surprises as he started to descend after the fog-vamp.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18

Ser Armithia-Seendren |

If that gaseous form lol is our vamp; it may be aware of us following it.

Ishta Khosiv |

I'm assuming Ishta got a good knowledge roll and knows things about vampires.
"It may, yes, but it still has to return to its coffin. If there's no coffin..." she shrugs. Then she adds "On the other hand, the necromancer could heal her, and we don't want that!"

DM Fang Dragon |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

I had to double check the rules on this. They state: Additional damage dealt to a vampire forced into gaseous form has no effect.
Neither spells nor weapons seem to have any effect on the cloud but you know the vampire must seek it's coffin before long or be utterly destroyed.

Azarra |

Thanks for checking. :)
Azarra makes sure she has a wooden stake and her anytool handy as they follow the gaseous form.

DM Fang Dragon |

The cloud continues to flow down the stairs and as it does so a strange ruddy light flickers into existence in the chamber below... A distant orkish chuckle echoes down the corridor from somewhere unseen.
I'll update the map tomorrow.

Ishta Khosiv |

Is that Spoiler supposed to be a skill check?

Kardas Rasalas |

Perception vs 18 Kardas: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Perception vs 18 Familiar: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 12 = 18
The swordmage's familiar rubs up against his master's leg and flashes him a pair of worry-filled eyes. This stops Kardas in his tracks and he takes a couple of sniffs until he too smells it. "Is that smoke I smell? The bastard! May Auryl drain the life out of him and piss on his soul!"
That feels like a timer just started ticking.

Ser Armithia-Seendren |

perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
The Paladin blindly continues...

Azarra |

Azarra follows with the rest of the party.

DM Fang Dragon |

The cloud of gas pools on the floor of the small storage room at the bottom of the stairs. Neatly stacked on the left wall as you enter are numerous old battered iron bound chests, most of which seem to have been hacked open.
From the center of the room rising up out of the tenuous mist is something else. A swirling, humanoid cloud of burning ash and charred body parts! A red glow of burning embers can be glimpsed floating within the mass. The air welling up the stairs reeks of smoke and burnt flesh. Upon noticing you the cinders that pass for eyes flare as it moves to attack the hated living!
Cinder ghouls are barely intelligent, but they do have a very vivid recollection of the pain they endured in the moments before their death. Filled with anger as fiery as the flames that that took their life, cinder ghouls harbor a strong hatred of fire and any living creature that has control over it.
Although it cannot speak, the sound of wailing and screaming and the rushing of fire-stoked wind constantly accompany a cinder ghoul.

Knowledge (religion) (Int): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

Ishta Khosiv |

Remind me to put some ranks in Religion next time we level up xD
Ishta has no idea what the new creature is, but it appears to be made out of fire, so it probably has some kind of resistance to it. On the other hand, she suspects the orc could be sneaking somewhere around, so she decides to recast her dusty spell, hoping to expose him and maybe blind her other enemies.
Glitterdust, Will save DC 17 or blind.

Azarra |

Knowledge Religion: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Leaving the wooden spike and the anytool in her handy bandolier in case she has need, and staying peripherally aware of the gaseous cloud so they don't lose it, Azarra gauges the abilities of this new foe, and outlines the possiblities for her allies.
It's a Cinder Ghoul. They are slightly resistant to channeling, and highly resistant to non-magical attacks. They are immune to fire and precision damage. They are vulnerable to cold.
They will try to burn, energy drain, or cause smoke inhalation.
She starts to sing.

Zane Levallis |

Zane followed with the others, and was momentarily taken aback by the fire creatures, incorrectly thinking to begin with that it was the vampire with some kind of strange new form. Hearing Azarra's warning and quick rundown of the beast, the priest nodded his understanding.

Kardas Rasalas |
