Zane's story started 27 years before his birth, when Dietric Levallis, Dawnlord of the small sect of Lathander in Phlan, sent his infant son and young wife out on a ship fleeing the doomed city, staying to help the brave defenders against the horde outside the walls. It is presumed that he perished with all the other defenders of the city in the massacre that followed.
The ship bearing Dietric's son, Markil, and his wife made it to the southern shore of the Moonsea, however, and the pair settled in the grand city of Suzail further South, safe from the barbarous northlands. Markil grew up being nursed on stories of the Morninglord from his mother, Sudrin, but grew bitter as he came to understand what had happened to his father. If Lathander was so good and powerful, why did he allow Phlan to be sacked and evil to reign? So Markil became a laborer and a drunkard, too self-pitying to learn a trade, too booze-soaked to care. Until he met Elanna. She became the light of his life, and he gave up the spirits for her, even found steady employ. It was a happy few years, made even more joyous by the announcement of Elanna's pregnancy. Phlan, home of his dead father, was a murky dream to Markil in his new-found happy life. It was a rough pregnancy for Elanna, however, the baby's life and the mother's almost being lost several times. Through hard work and perseverance and the help of Sudrin, the woman was able to carry the baby to term, but as the hours went by during the hard labor and the blood continued to stain the sheets Sudrin sent for the priests of Lathander. The duo of clerics prayed hard, pouring copious amounts of energy granted them by the Morninglord into both woman and child, but Elanna perished soon after seeing her infant son. And so Fentil came into the world motherless as Markil had been fatherless. Markil slipped into a deep despair, falling back into the habits from previous sorrowful days, so it was left to Sudrin to care for the child. She taught him as she had taught Markil about the Morninglord, Fentil taking to the stories with reverence instead of bitterness. She would take Fentil to see his father on occasion, but kept him blessedly shielded from the worst of the man's depravities. At a young age the clergy of Lathander visited her humble home, stating that they believed Fentil should be a child of the temple. Thinking of her long-dead Dietric, Sudrin consented on the condition she could visit when she wanted. Fentil spent the next decade housed in the temple of the Morninglord, learning the wonder of rebirth, renewal, the promise of each new day. His grandmother visited him often, giving him prideful looks as he would tell her of his latest lessons and discoveries. He spoke to her often of reaching out to his father, intending on trying to talk the man into dropping his self-destructive habits. Soon after Fentil reached adulthood, Sudrin came to him teary-eyed, telling him of Markil's death from overdose of the latest drug he had been imbibing. Though he'd known the man more as a distant cousin, Fentil still grieved, holding a small funeral at sunset as was the custom and maintaining a vigil until the morning sun rose. A new beginning. For the next few years Fentil performed the duties of a newly ordained Cleric of Lathander, a Dawnbringer. As was custom, he took on a new name to signify his rebirth, the young man choosing the simple 'Zane'. Zane mainly presided over sunrise services, calling on worshippers to speak with them personally about the Morninglord or offer his meager skills as a healer. Through a merchant follower of Lathander, Zane heard of the re-settling of Phlan and the call for help in driving the settled evil out of the ruins of the city so as to make it habitable and a stronghold for good once more on the Moonsea. Gaining the High Dawnlord's blessing for this endeavor to help establish a new beginning, Zane trained for several weeks at martial skills while he waited for a northern caravan to take him to Mulmaster on the Moonsea, determined to not be a liability in the fights surely to come. Zane went to visit his elderly grandmother one day just before he was to leave, only to find her cold in her bed, a peaceful look on her face. He presided over her funeral, as well, a full priest this time, his tears flowing freely as he said his good-byes. This endeavor being a new start for the young man as well, Zane left Suzail behind to slowly make his way to New Phlan, his emotions mixed as he made his way back to his doomed family's start.
Appearance/Description:
Zane is a tall, athletic young man with short-cropped light brown hair and brilliant green eyes. He has recently grown a neatly groomed mustache and beard and prefers to wear blues and yellows for his clothing.
Zane is a good-natured man who believes that anyone can be redeemed if they want to be. He gives people second chances, but he is no fool...he generally knows a truly repentant person from a deceiver. Zane keeps a sunny disposition about most things, though the recent loss of his grandmother still wears on him heavily. He believes he has a holy mission to assist in the rebirth of Phlan, and will pursue his goal with zeal. |
