Azarra tries to wind the instrument but her first attempt sounds more like a dry fart than music.
Perform: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
Undeterred she tries again and this time the note rings out pure, brassy and surprisingly loud. Following the sheet music, Azarra diligently plays the battle anthem of the chosen of Tempus. A stirring piece at the best of times, here it causes your heart to swell and gosh darned it if you're not almost off marching to the final battle! As the last note echoes impossibly loud throughput the keep, there is a dramatic effect on the charnel pile. The cadavers at first individually and then in groups pick themselves up, form ranks and march out!
All save one... Staring at you is a particularly noisome and foul looking undead, munching on a rotting and severed arm. It's long glistening tongue darts out as if tasting the air. It takes a chunk out of the arm, smiles beatifically at you with and then belches. The already smelly room fills with the most indescribably awful stench, literally stomach churning! Without a word it launches it self at you!
Rules stuff. The entire room is choked with it's aura. You all need to make a DC15 Fort save or be sickened. Also the horn's magic has put a spring in your step, you are hastened for 10 rounds.

Azarra |
It was Ishta with the readied action.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Knowledge: Religion: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
It's a very powerful ghast! Be careful.
Do we know anything else about it?
Worried that Ishta will be easy pickings for the scary creature, she reaches out and casts Protection from Evil on her, hoping that it will help her against the Ghast.
(Spell-Like Ability--lasts 20 rounds. Grants +2 deflection bonus to AC and a +2 resistance bonus on saves, and other effects depending on what happens. Spell Text HERE.)

Ser Armithia begins to choke.
Cough!Cough! This is a ghast, and a powerful one at that. Cough!
This is very embarrassing...
DM Fang Dragon |
Ser Armithia-Seendren |
The greenish elf mumbles the information.
At least Smite will even out the Sickened condition...lol.
Zane Levallis |
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Zane smiled slightly at Azarra's first attempt, then his green eyes widened as the horn played the clear, loud notes. Not being a follower of the God of Battle, the priest still found himself moved by the clarion call of the instrument. His keen ears perked up at the sound of marching feet and beating drums outside, and he knew that the previous defenders of the Keep had stirred one final time in its defense.
Fort: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Zane's nose wrinkled in distaste as the odor of the creature threatened to overwhelm him, but his time caring for the wounded and sickly in the service of Lathander did his well here. Zane moved up closer to the ghast, heeding Azarra's warning but knowing that the foul beast must be put down. Feeling the magical haste coursing through him, he struck twice in quick succession at the undead beast.
Heavy Mace, Bless, Haste: 1d20 + 4 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 4 + 1 + 1 = 16
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Heavy Mace, Bless, Haste: 1d20 + 4 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 1 + 1 = 8
5' step, then attack twice
Ishta Khosiv |
Burning Hands with reservoir spent to increase CL to 5, DC 17 Half 5d6 + 5 ⇒ (1, 4, 3, 2, 2) + 5 = 17
Fort Save, PfE 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 1 + 2 = 13
Just after releasing her fan of flames, Ishta starts to feel bad. Her eyes itch and want to close, and her belly is stirring inside. She retires from the room carefuly, leaving her place to others who can put a bigger grain of salt to the fight.
Withdrawing, or however it's called.
Azarra |
Oh sorry, forgot the Fort save
Fort Save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18
Azarra doesn't have any spells left with which to fight, so she moves to the side, draws her bow, and starts singing to inspire everyone's courage.
+1 to saving throws against charm and fear effects and +1 on attack and weapon damage rolls
DM Fang Dragon |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
I'm tired so I'm going to wait for Kardas and Malesti (who may be rather distracted) before processing the actions.
Kardas Rasalas |
Fort Save vs DC15: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Gagging and reeling on the overwhelming stench of evil, Kardas stumbles forward. He raises a hand and invokes an ancient Nar word of power, which when combined with esoteric hand movements, brings forth a bright beam of radiant magic.
Std Action: Cast Disrupt Undead (ray attack)
Move action: move forwards (can I climb onto the sarcophagus? if not I will move one tile to the west and hope Zane 5 ft steps next round)
Disrupt Undead (Ray) vs touch AC: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

Sorry, 5th of December is a holiday here in the Netherlands. That, plus the arrival of my new pc, work and 'stuff' delayed me a bit.
DM Fang Dragon |
Ishta awaited the arrival of the ghast with spell on her lips which caused a vivid flan of flame to jet out, causing the horror's skin to blacken and curl!
Reflex DC 17: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16 <--- FAIL
Kardas's ray only just hit the filthy undead, singing it, it was proving hard to aim amid the eye watering stench! It's touch AC is 12, it's regular AC is 20. BTW those are trestle tables not sarcophagi. I moved you so you wouldn't take an AOO from the spell casting, if you'd prefer to be on the table you can go there next round?
Sickness Duration: Kardas: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Ishta gagging due to the fumes rushed out of the room! Unfortunately you're sickened for a good few minutes.
Sickness Duration: Ishta: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Concerned about her friend, Azarra wards Ishta against evil, managing to avoid the worst effects of the noxious vapors herself.
The fumes cause Malesti to gag, but he still somehow manages to hold his bow steady enough for an arrow to slice across the ghast's arm!
Fort: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8 <--- FAIL
Longbow Attack: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 5 - 2 = 22Longbow Damage: 1d8 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 3 - 2 = 6 <--- HIT

Zane is unaffected by the stench, but the undead proves to be a canny opponent, and he finds himself unable to score any kind of hit. Soon all he can do is defend himself as the ghast attacks in a frenzy of tooth and claw. It's venomous claws rake the priest numbing the wound, for a moment he feared the numbness would take hold, allowing the ghast free reign to ravage him, but his system shrugs of the venom!

The knight snarls at the foul creature.
By Helm, thee shall fall!
Swift=Smite Evil counters sickened mechanically. Inspired! AC 20 vs him.

Not satisfied, the gold elf attempts to follow up with another solid hit.
Melee bastard sword: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 5 + 1 = 20
damage smite: 1d10 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 1 = 8
Azarra |
Azarra continues singing. Down to 6/14 rounds of Bardic Performance.
She halfheartedly attempts to shoot the creature with an arrow, knowing that she would have to be perfect to do so...
Attack: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 - 4 = 17
Unfortunately, because she is firing into melee, she misses. Maybe if I keep practicing I'll get better at precision shots, she says to herself with determination.
Zane Levallis |
Zane gasped as the filthy creature's claws raked him, but managed to stand his ground, shrugging off the lethargy that threatened to overwhelm him. He watched as the thing was engulfed in Ishta's flames, and Ser Armithia managed to get two solid blows in. "Very good, everyone. Together we shall rid the Keep of this vile beast!"
Feeling Azarra's voice infuse him with more energy and determination, the priest attacked the ghast with renewed vigor.
Heavy Mace, Bless, Haste, IC: 1d20 + 4 + 1 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 4 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 26

Ray of Frost, Sickened, Bless, Haste, IC: 1d20 + 3 - 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 3 - 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 15
Damage: 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Kardas Rasalas |
"By Myrkul's balls!" gags Kardas as the stench continues to seep into his very system and mind. He steps up onto the table, his every move quickened by the horn's magicks, and swings his sword at the undead monstrosity.
Move: 5ft onto the table
Std/Full-rnd action: attack with longsword, using it twohanded
Attack 1: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Damage 1: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Attack 2: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Damage 2: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Unsure whether I can 5ft step onto the table or not, I rolled two attacks just in case I can full-round attack using haste. If not, ignore the second.
Modifiers: Bless +1 attack, Haste +1 attack and +1 dodge to AC, Sickened -2 attack, dmg and saves
Current AC: 16
DM Fang Dragon |
Powered by the righteous fury of Helm, Ser Armithia's sword flashes out, cauterizing the abomination's flesh!
Gagging from the indescribable stench, Kardas tries desperately to get past the horror's defenses. His forts thrust is easily batted aside but his second bites deeply into it's chest.
Fighting back nausea, Ishta manages to summon a ray of utter cold which strikes the fiend, causing bits flesh to flash freeze and fall off.
Likewise a green looking Malesti bites his tongue to master himself before shooting the ghast in the throat! Dry heaving gets the better of him, ruining his second shot.
Longbow Attack, sickness, bless, inspire: 1d20 + 5 - 2 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 5 - 2 + 1 + 1 = 22Longbow Damage: 1d8 + 3 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 3 - 2 + 1 = 7

Zane heavy mace falls upon the severely wounded looking undead, smashing ribs and fingers alike. A madness enters the things eyes, burned horribly by Ser Armithia's blade it knows only the thirst for vengeance! Heedless of the ruination of it's flesh, it attacks in a savage frenzy! Yet Ser Armithia's armor turns all but one envenomed claw. His shoulder instantly goes numb, but like Zane before him - his system proves indomitable to the horror's poison.

With one final strike, the paladin's blade takes the thing's head clean off and suddenly the pile of mangled flesh before you rotted away to nothingness over the course of several heartbeats!
COMBAT OVER
There's nothing of value left in this room, almost everything seems to have been gnawed on.
What next?
Ser Armithia-Seendren |
Smite granted +2 deflection bonus to AC. AC 20! Yea Smite!
gonna make me put ranks into it: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Azarra |
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Azarra reaches over to Zane, running her fingers across him as she examines his injuries. You're hurt. I'm sorry; I don't have any more healing energy. Are you going to be okay? Do you want me to bind this?
Ser Armithia-Seendren |
Standing tall over the unclean vermin, the knight puts his bastard sword up in a salut to his companions.
I, Ser Armithia--Seendren, Helm's knight, do swear to defend and protect each of you! I am honored to be counted one of you!
The gold elf then places a gauntleted hand upon Zane's shoulder.
Blessings be upon you.
lay on hands: 1d6 ⇒ 1
A bit anticlimactic...
lay on hands: 1d6 ⇒ 4
DM Fang Dragon |
HP added, Zane is looking much better now.
Zane Levallis |
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Looking at his shoulder and the torn wound there from the ghast's claws, Zane winced as Azarra ran her hand across him, smiling in appreciation as he grasped her hand in his. "It looks worse than it is. I count us lucky to escape that foe with only a minor injury and some retching." His green eyes met hers, realizing her close proximity, and he was about to respond to her question about binding his wounds when Ser Armithia laid his hand upon him and the priest felt healing energy enter his body, the worst of his wounds closing.
Zane gave the half-elf's hand a gentle squeeze, then turned to the gold elf. "I am honored to receive your protection and count you as an ally, Ser Armithia. Thanks to you and Helm for your healing." He patted the knight on the shoulder, his eyes drifting back to Azarra to moon over her for a bit longer before he heard a commotion outside.
"I believe our orcish friends are beset outside. Let us take a look at what allies the horn has conjured up to fight our enemy!" The cleric breathed deeply, winking at Azarra before starting to proceed to the nearest exit to the outside.
Ser Armithia-Seendren |
Ser Armithia steps along side the cleric.
Azarra |
Azarra blushes at the wink, and then follows the group.
Kardas Rasalas |
Kardas stumbles after Zane while trying to shake off what overwhelmed in that room. "What I wouldn't do for some fire brandy right now to burn away that awful taste with..."
He then slaps both Armithia and Zane on the back, proud of their bravery in the face of danger. Going toe to toe with such an undead foe is no easy task. "Let us hope this is the end of the orcs, for my arms are aching for rest."
Good job :D that could've turned gnarly real fast.
Ishta Khosiv |
Ishta is still holding her belly with her hand while going outside with the others to check how the battle is going.
"When this is over, we... ugh... we should take care of the oozes. Then I could do a quick search for hidden... ufff... things around the place, if you feel like" she adds while tilting her scroll cases and fighting the urge to throw off.
DM Fang Dragon |
The watchers of dawn file outside to find the grass dotted with bloodied band broken corpses and churned up soil. At the northern end of the island, a knot of dead orcs four deep shows where they made their last stand. Slaughtered by the undead every last one of them. Of the undead themselves there is no sign, no tracks leave the island. It's as if they simply vanished. Another curious thing, the horn while still magical seems greatly diminished and no matter how many times Azarra tries the magic doesn't work again.
Congratulations! Unless you choose to fight the oozes that's basically it for Fort Sohkol.
Ser Armithia-Seendren |
Don't seem to remember any oozes....
Azarra |
Don't seem to remember any oozes....
Are you joking? The ones that you stood in front of for several turns, and then locked behind doors, hoping the orcs would run into them? :)
Ser Armithia-Seendren |
Nope. Doesn't ring a bell...let's go....
Ishta Khosiv |
I'm sure Ser Armithia doesn't want to ignore a potential danger that might take the life of the first innocent that comes into the fort...
Zane Levallis |
Zane nodded grimly as the efficient work of the living dead is brought to light. Of the undead themselves there is no sign, leading the priest to believe that they have finally found their release from this into the next. The Cleric spoke a short prayer for their souls, then turned to the others.
"Let's go deal with those slime-things, then didn't you say you had a spell that could reveal the place's secrets, Ishta? Does anyone know if there is an effective way to handle those two creatures. Once we're done with those tasks I would like to build a funeral pyre and give these poor folks' remains a proper send off...it's been fifty years coming."
More than willing to let any of all of these things happen off-screen.
Ishta Khosiv |
"I have a scroll that can do that, to be more precise." Ishta is slowly recovering. "A present from my father, I hope we put it to good use."
Ser Armithia-Seendren |
Ser Armithia surveys the field. Scanning the area for residual evil.
The knight shrugs.
Not being knowledgeable about those creatures, we may want to be prudent.
Azarra |
Now that we aren't rushed, we may also want to recheck each room and make sure we aren't leaving anything valuable behind. I mean... they are going to take a percentage, and we need to be able to continue to fund our group. Agree that we should take out the oozes first though. I mean, we're supposed to clear the area so people can use this place again, right?
Ishta Khosiv |
"If I could stand near the door while someone else opens it" Ishta suggests, "I could deliver my last spell and help the combat go smoother, then retire and not step on your legs." Ishta calculates her spell could damage the slimes seriously... if they're not immune to fire, of course.
Ser Armithia-Seendren |
The elf nods in agreement.
Kardas Rasalas |
"I agree with the notion of turning this place upside down to ensure we bring back everything worth anything. We risked our lives to secure Phlan so it only seems right. We can always spend the night and come tomorrow, apply practical magics - assuming we have any of the sorts - to detect hidden compartments and such."
DM Fang Dragon |
OK so it sounds like you want to take the Ooozes out. Let me know if you're planning to rest first, and if so where. Don't forget it's only safe to cross the river for a few hours each day. For reference it's nearly mid day now and it'll be another 3-4 hours sill you could return.
Zane Levallis |
I'd prefer to take the oozes out now, using Ishta's recommendation of her blasting them and then the rest of us filing in and beating what's left to death.
Azarra |
Agree. I won't be much help with no spells left, but I can sing and give everyone bonuses.
Malstei Alenuath |
Mal spits the taste of undeath from his mouth, especially bitter to a people so full of vibrancy and life.
He draws an arrow, "Let's end the last of the threats here. Of course, what we find here as a reward I shall first use to repay the kindness and generosity of you all. I... apologize if I offended any of you yesterday old prejudices die hard. You are all loyal allies and I hope that the word friend is not too strong".
DM Fang Dragon |
I'm kinda waiting for an action rather than OOC comments :)
Ishta Khosiv |
Ishta stands near the door where the oozes were locked and braces herself.
Readied Action: Burning Hands with boosted CL.
Ser Armithia-Seendren |
Ser Armithia readies to charge in after Ishta's spell.
Azarra |
Azarra casts Open on the door where the oozes are, to set the whole thing in motion.
Assuming that people are bunched up near door C. I moved myself, but not the others.
Ishta Khosiv |
Uh... I positioned myself on the southern door, because that's where I get the best angle, but now realised I can't reach that room without passing through the oozes' one... so maybe I should be at the northern entrance? Yeah, I'll try that.
