Ishta is going to research a bit on how to deal with the active wards in the library, as it seems pretty probable they'll end up going there the next day. If a spell is needed, she'll look for someone who might sell it in scrolls (maybe she'll learn it herself from the scroll, or from her own notes if we level up).

She's totally in favor of financing a place for orphans to stay, dedicating a portion of their earnings to it. Or of her earnings, at least. Children about to be sacrificed by orcs was a situation that has touched her, with motives.

All, I've been trying to compile the loot from the Temple of Bane portion of our adventure. I don't see a loot list for the Croc-Men that we defeated, nor the first batch of half-orcs that we encountered. I don't know that we said we searched them, either, for that matter.

For the last two big bads that we faced, I know I wrote that we searched them, but I think we moved on before the loot was listed. FangDragon, can you tell me what they had on them?

The croc-men didn't really have much loot on them apart from shredded clothing and two unholy symbols of bane. The half orcs had quite a lot which I totally forgot to use against you.

All in all you made a good haul there, which thanks to von Urslingen isn't getting taxed.

Alrighty, I think I have everything in the loot log. Looks like if we sell everything, everyone gets 5,876 gp & 8 sp. I would personally like to keep the Headband of Inspired Wisdom +2 and just remove 2,000 gp from my total, if no one minds.

I'll take one of the cloaks. I don't think that you guys/we need to donate money to use something though... let's just use what we can, and divide the rest. Just it still belongs to the party, so if we can't use something anymore, we pass it on or sell it and divide it at that point. I don't want anyone to feel like they can't use a valuable item because they don't have enough gold to give to the rest of us. Does that make sense?

Somehow I failed to register we found a +1 chain shirt, but Kardas would love to take that if possible. It would put a 650gp dent in the party split - 130gp each - so as not to throw a wrench in everyone's current spending plans, I'll account for that loss.

As in, I'll 'buy' it for 520gp, giving every party member 130 gold. My bad, I should've really noticed that it was in the loot pool. It still leaves Kardas with a little over 5000 to spend, so really, don't feel bad :)

Going to upgrade my MW Heavy Mace to +1 for 2,000 gp, if that's ok. Also buy a Ring of Protection +1 for another 2,000 gp. Finally, since there's no official temple to Lathander in Phlan at the moment, the cause of the orphaned children getting a second chance will take the place of Zane's tithe, and he will entrust 500 gp to either Councilor Von Urslingen, or to Azarra if the man declines, for the care and disposition of the children.

Civilized Phlan currently qualifies as a small city so items up to 4000gp are available. 5000g is above that so it'll have a lower chance say 50% (rolling high is good).

Oh, since I can't buy the bracers anyway, I should also give to the orphanage cause. I'll donate 500 gold as well.

Didn't we figure out what it would cost to buy a building earlier? Was it something like 2,000 gold? I can't remember. That might be a good investment, although of course if that is right it seems scary walking around with equipment that is worth more than a house. :)

Other than orphanage investments, since I can't improve my weapon, I think I will buy a lens of detection, which should bump my perception skill up so we can find more treasure, which will help more orphans and people in need. :) That is 3,500 gold, so available, right?

The rules for research are here. The council's archives contain: laws, local history, tax returns, census details, property records, birth and death certificates, other civic records etc... In game terms this means Kn:Local, Kn: History (Phlan), Kn: Geography (Phlan) with a +3 bonus on those. The base DC for checks is 20 due to the Byzantine filing system. It has 18 KP.

You choose the topic of research and hopefully it will fall into one of the knowledge categories. The library actually lets you make the check untrained, however in practice you may need to take 20 which will take a lot of time. Friar Jenkins has all the knowledge skills so it may be more efficient to hire him - assuming you trust him of course.

Alright, so having Kn: History won't work, I do need Kn: History (Phlan), right? I'm looking for something related to how was the Library protected magically speaking, and how could we overcome the defenses (possible passwords, shortcuts, etc). What should I roll then?

What I wanted to do was let Jenkins research while I also research myself, then hire another one to give me the aid another bonus.

So Jenkins has a +10 Kn:History bonus, and the library provides a +3 circumstance bonus. He's going to make that check pretty easily.

Aid another is also possible untrained using the town hall library.

I don't think that there would be a specialized knowledge history for Phlan (?), but perhaps that is where the Lore skill could come in... that would be the Phlan specialization if you wanted to specialize.
