DM Dan E's Legacy of Fire: Chapter 3 The Jackal's Price

Game Master Dan E

Recruited to reclaim the town of Kelmarane from a tribe of gnolls, six adventurers find themselves caught up in a series of events that may change the face of Katapesh: the Legacy of Fire.

Pazhvann frowns. He looks across the group and back to the inquisitor but seems to take Khalid's pronouncement as final.

That is unfortunate. It would take .. something extraordinary for my Mistress to leave the Plane of Air. She still grieves for her mortal lover Andrathi even after centuries.

But by oath I am sworn to respect your choice even if I think it is the wrong one. A warning though. Zayifid is not the only former Templar still alive and when Davashuum hears that the Scroll has been recovered she may come for it. And she does not negotiate.

I am sorry ...

Cut short the jann's gaze is drawn to the west where large dust clouds herald what must be large numbers of creatures moving fast, straight toward you.

I thought we would have more time. They call themselves the Sons of Carrion. If Zayifid is with them I will make him regret it but otherwise I cannot interfere except to recover the Scroll if you fall..

From the distance you estimate you have about five minutes before a large force is on your position from the west. You may take whatever preparations you can think of in that time and place yourself on the map. Then the battle shall commence!

OASIS MAP You are in a bowl with the slopey lines indicating the closest hill crests and where you'd expect to gain line of sight. Enemies would need to fly or climb from the east, west or south where the hatched portions are. The alcove inside the sphinx is about 15' square, about enough to pile the caravan into if your that way inclined. You should think about where to put the merchant, his three workers and Haleen.

I have some questions for Pazhvann but they'll have to wait for the time being

Linah stands up and starts to fortify her companions with protective magic.

When there is about one minute left I'll start throwing spells around
Casting Bless
Casting Shield of faith
Casting Protection from Evil on myself
Casting Protection from Evil (communal) with two minutes duration on Grall, Nuveril and Khalid and with one minute duration on Zeladiel.
Casting Guidance on Zeladiel

Anyone wants Bull's Strength?

Sure you know Grall will take one. Zel, Blur scrolls...just a reminder as well as enlarge :].
And don't forget blessing of fervor...and possibly air walk of Khalid against flying creatures...

Zeladiel glares at Khalid but turns his gaze to the dust cloud in the distance and his focus shifts.
"Get the non-combatants out of the way. Put them in here with Pazhvann. Form a defensive perimeter to protect them. Grall and Nuveril, take the flanks. Khalid, take point. My magics can provide some help, if you wish it."
Zeladiel's fingers move over and about his bow as he starts bringing his powers to bear.

(Pearl of Power to recall then cast Mage Armour, then cast Mass Enlarge Person, Gravity Bow, Bull's Strength and Blur. If you want one of those spells (except Gravity Bow, set it in your Current Effect with Zeladiel's name, as below, and I'll cross it from my spell list. So if no one wants that Mage Armour, I'll keep the Pearl on my list. Depending on where the enemy arrive, I can start with spells like Haste, Fireball and Stinking Cloud as required.)

Current Effects: Mage Armour (Zeladiel), Gravity Bow (Zeladiel), Bless (Linah), Protection from Evil (Linah), Guidance (Linah)

I said mid-afternoon so let's give Zeladiel the benefit of the doubt on his morning mage armour still being up which keeps his pearl.

Based on the above I make buffs as follows. For simplicity I'll assume a minute gone on everything.

Shield of Faith K,L
Weapon of Awe K
Mage Armour Z

Nuveril can have your spell Linah, I will take a wand charge or spell from Zel.

If you guys are happy with the following starting positions then we'll get going.

I thought we would have more time. They call themselves the Sons of Carrion. If Zayifid is with them I will make him regret it but otherwise I cannot interfere except to recover the Scroll if you fall..

Nuveril can't but picture this Nefeshti as something similar to Almah on a grander scale, sitting in a pleasure nest in a cloud while sending out others to fight on her behalf. She grunts cynically as the Templar points out the approaching horde: convenient that just as they refuse to hand over the scroll, a group of attackers arrive and Pazhvann disavows any interference other than collecting what he desires if they should fall.... "Why are we defending the Templar?" she demands. "Those who will not fight but declare their intentions of looting the dead deserve no protection."

Drawing weapons, and good to go. Nuveril will rage when the first ranged weapons and/or spells start flying from the bad guys.

Nuveril is correct. I do not deserve your protection but neither do I require it.

The jann speaks a word and he is suddenly encased in grey full plate, a bascinet covering his features. He rises a few feet into the air before vanishing from sight.

The merchant is either terrified or putting on his best attempt at it. He raises no objection to putting the caravan into cover and his men, no strangers to gnoll attacks it seems, hurry to get the animals, and themselves, up the cracked steps and into the alcove.

The group moves into its fairly tight crescent around the sphinx, ready their weapons and cast their protective spells. Zeladiel and Linah in particular cast spell after spell.

You catch glimpses of your enemy as they run across the dunes. Gnolls, men, hyena and something that looks like a two-headed giant.
They seem to stop and rally a moment, out of sight, before the final hill before a wave of men rush over the crest waving their weapons.

Raiders, desert scum. Almost as reviled as the gnolls, they wear dark, tattered robes over stained metal armour. Crazed faces are lined with ritual scars. You make out eight in front, men and women, wielding scimitars and bucklers. Behind them a quartet of bowman take up positions atop the hill and nock arrows to longbows. The swordsman screech like wild things as they race to the attack.

"Now they have no choice but to come to us," Zeladiel smirks bitterly.
(Centre the stinking cloud (DC 17, 20' radius) 4 squares up from the bottom one on the ridge. Sorry, no access to map at work but I memorised the best place to centre it. :-)
