Linah ties the rope the impulse before. I'm fine with Khalid grabbing it and climbing down the rest of the way on a DC 5. F-7 is effectively the bottom. You can move past Zeladiel.
Ok, climb down the rope and move to E-8, drawing Tempest after reaching the bottom.

DM Dan E |

Khalid finds the climb difficult. A handhold breaks away under his grip and for a few moments he contemplates a fall until Linah drops her rope right next to him. The inquisitor grabs on, sliding down and taking up position on the edge of the lava pool, mindful that there are at least two salamanders lurking somewhere.
Zeladiel is up.

DM Dan E |

So Zeladiel is walking up the wall on to the roof of the cavern. Its 60' up and covered in fissures as per earlier description but easy enough to walk on.
Zeladiel takes up a high position. There is no sign of the salamanders but surely they are around....
Grall is up.
? 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26 !

Zeladiel Araxyll |

Okay, so the 40' near vertical shaft doesn't come out in the roof? If it's like a chimney at the side of a house then I'll emerge onto the wall above the opening as opposed to the floor below it. I'll ready that action to zap a salamander with the metamagic elemental ice rod and back slowly up the interior cavern wall towards the roof.

I was picturing it exactly like a chimney sorry if that wasn't clear. I figure you walk down to the opening and walk up the other side, ending up high on the wall (about forty feetish high).

DM Dan E |

Moving on. Its very much my fault things have dragged a bit but I'm looking to pick up the pace and will be strictly enforcing 24 hour rule at least until Christmas inevitably slows things down.
Still panting from the exertion of his brief rage and with blood flowing down his legs, Grall draws a javelin and readies to throw at the first enemy to come into sight.

Round 5
Ordered Initiative
Sajan 23
Flamebrother 22
Nuveril 21
Linah 18
Khalid 12a
Zeladiel 12b
Javelin Salamander 9
Grall 4
??
Effects
- Mage Armour (Zeladiel, Sajan)
- Protection from Fire (all)
- Haste (Zeladiel, Linah, Khalid, Sajan)- expires round 7
Notes
- Each square in the upper cavern is difficult terrain from the mud coating the floor.
- The chute down is in Linah's square.
- Distance from lava cavern to upper cavern is 40', cavern is 60' high.
- Flamebrother is small. Javelin salamander is medium.
- Note lava is bad.
- Crossing the land sections in the lava pool will require jumping (DC 5 / DC 10 for 5'/10' provided 10' running start).
Only Zeladiel and Khalid have moved on the map so I will hold off on update for now. Sajan is up.

Round 5, initiative 18
ac 18
hp 36/37
effects: resist energy, haste
Linah decends down the rope as fast as she can (i hoping i get to the bottom when i'm hasted). She looks in terror at the wounds on Grall and the sea of fire that lies between them. "Stay out of the way!" she calls out to Grall.
Move action to climb down to the platform. I don't know how many climb checks that requires but i rolled a few. If it's possible to take 10 (total 10 + 1 = 11) then i'll do that.

Don't forget you are +12 to jump due to haste, jump quickly while you still can :)

Currently yeah sure. That may change however if you become distracted or threatened.

Not real sure where we are in the init order...
Taking advantage of Zeladiel's spell, Khalid hops across the lava twice coming to rest on one of the islands in the lava in a defensive stance...
Move to A17 - 55 ft of movement, current movement rate 60 ft. Acrobatics minimum check for jumping currently +18. Going in to Total Defense +4 to AC/CMD...need to take one more rank next level...

DM Dan E |

1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23
On the alert from an attack, Sajan easily leaps back over to the first island, which bobs slightly under his weight.
Nuveril is up. Then Linah and Khalid's posted actions then Zeladiel, Grall.
I'm sure the hide and seek stuff is annoying. Shouldn't go on too much longer I would suspect...

Nuveril |

"No!" Nuveril growls angrily, seeing Sajan take up a position in the lava pools. "Why do you cede the choice of a battlefield to them? They have every advantage out there and can pull us into certain death! Make them come to us on the solid ground, where we can flank them and they cannot merely dive back into the lava to retreat! They cannot escape us if we work together! On the rock islands we each stand alone!"
Nuveril has no interest in being immolated so will stand her ground and delay.

DM Dan E |

Taking the rope in both hands and throwing one last look at the mud pool where the flamebrother continues to lurk, Linah quickly descends the rope, reaching the bottom just as Khalid makes a running jump for the first island.
You can achieve a DC 10 for accelerated climbing for a 25' move while hasted. So double move to the bottom.
Hasted, the inquisitor clears the jump easily but just as he lands (B,9) a whole series of things happen nearly at once.
As if been given some kind of signal, the salamander who attacked Grall surges out of the lava (from under the surface at C,10), its dangerous tail darting out at the inquisitor who manages to duck under.
Readied Tail Slap vs Khalid 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 12 = 18 miss
2d6 + 2 ⇒ (6, 2) + 2 = 10
This interrupts Khalid's movement. It also triggers readies from Zeladiel and Grall in turn. The sequence then, as far as it is apparent is Zeladiel ready action, Grall ready action, Khalid finishes turn, then delays go in initiative order (Nuveril might want to wait on this). Order will then go Zeladiel, Grall, Salamander, Khalid, any taken delays.

Sajan Krama Sumna |

"No!" Nuveril growls angrily, seeing Sajan take up a position in the lava pools. "Why do you cede the choice of a battlefield to them? They have every advantage out there and can pull us into certain death! Make them come to us on the solid ground, where we can flank them and they cannot merely dive back into the lava to retreat! They cannot escape us if we work together! On the rock islands we each stand alone!"
Hearing Nuveril's wailing behind him as he makes the jump, Sajan grits his teeth and replies just before the creature appears-
Nuveril- please be quiet. I wouldn't want Linah to cross without someone nearby to help her if shes attacked.

DM Dan E |

The salamander is tough and strong with scales as hard as armour. It is not however, particularly agile and Zeladiel's ray hits it dead on in the centre of its torso, frost spreading over the point of impact. The creature shrieks in anger and pain at the cold based attack.
Grall's bowshot is next although that is unlikely to change anything for Khalid.

DM Dan E |

The flurry of action continues.
Linah looks up to see the flamebrother appear at the top of the shaft. Badly battered by its brief encounter with Sajan, the creature seems compelled to continue to fight, still cradled in its rage.
Disdaining the rope that would seem to burn through at its touch, the salamander simply propels itself forward, hissing as it impacts hard with the ground below. Landing prone, it seems to have enough vigor to find its feet, although black blood runs down its sides.
4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 5, 1) = 9
Yet the flamebrother is not the only foe to make itself known. Another salamander rises out of concealment between two of the floating islands (H,15). There seems little doubt that this is Thratnias. Only a slight narrowing of features marks her sex but she is even bigger than her partner. One hand holds a black iron stabbing spear while the other, two javelins of different make, she seems to take pains to avoid dipping these in the lava.
The salamander seems little interested in parlay or talking at all. As she closes she tosses one of the javelins almost casually at Zeladiel, exposed on the wall and it transforms into a bolt of lightning which slams into the wizard with brutal force.
Javelin of Lightning 5d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 2, 4, 3) = 15 Reflex for half. Note Zeladiel is high enough on the wall that this misses Linah even though she is in the line.
A chortle from above heralds the appearance of the earth mephit, flying down into the chamber from one of the fissures in the roof not too far from Grall and Nuveril. It is 40' high, the roof you will recall is 60'. The little creature seems all too happy to speak.
Nasty mans get what they deserrve now! Oh yes. Andgrronakrraks has told Thrratnias everrything! She will reward Andgrronakrraks and nasty mans will be gone!
Nuveril is up, assuming she acts now, initiative will become.
Sajan 23
Linah 18
Zeladiel 12a

Javelin Salamander 12c
Khalid 12d
Flamebrother Salamander 12e
Thratnias 12f
Mephit 12g
Nuveril 12h
Map is HERE .

DM Dan E |

Actually I realise I've made an error in the ready/delay stacking. Thratnias re-focused her initiative to 21 but has a lower ininitiative modifier than Nuveril. When the flamebrother implemented its delay, Nuveril could have acted then before Thratnias (the mephit had a higher modifier but was also delaying waiting for Thratnias to act). Happy for her to decide when she wants to take her action (before or after Thratnias). May not make much of a difference but its a tough fight and I don't want to deny you any potential advantage.

Nuveril |

Nuveril curses angrily as everything she was sure was going to happen happens. "Damn it, Sajan, when are you going to start letting us kill things? After it leads to the death of us all?"
Not a thing she can do about it at this point except throw away javelins, so she'll keep delaying. The mephit can fly, and by the time she took 2 rounds to work her way over to the salamander, it would just sink down in the lava and pop up somewhere else.

Sajan Krama Sumna |

Still doing his best to ignore Nuveril's wailing, Sajan goes on the offensive.
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27
1d8 + 6 + 2d6 ⇒ (5) + 6 + (1, 2) = 14 Extra 1 point of damage if vulnerable to cold...
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28
1d8 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17
1d8 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26
1d8 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Sajan steps to the south and delivers blows at bewildering speeds, his fist coating itself in frost as he delivers the first strike in his flurry.

DM Dan E |

Sajan's blistering ki-enhanced attack is again succesful, the monk managing to slap away the salamander's spear with his left hand while delivering a number of punishing blows with the right which split the creature's scales in places. Together with the damage from Zeladiel's spell, the salamander is left badly wounded. AC 26 is a hit
The creature shakes its head in an attempt to recover its focus hissing at its partner.
'Nias we musst kill them quickly or withdraw!
Linah is up.

Linah Jamil'Kaid |

Round 5, initiative 18
ac 19 (+1 haste)
hp 36/37
effects: resist energy, haste
"Zeladiel, meet me on the other side", Linah says before she closes her eyes and the air around her starts to shiver. A burst of energy marks her start as she rushes for the far ledge to get to Nuveril and Grall.
Standard action to channel positive energy to (hopefully) harm elemental creatures. 3d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 6) = 8 damage, dc14 will save for half damage.
Move action to -E11, moving E8->D8->C9(jumping)->B10->A10->-C10->-E11
Hope the channel can effect the salamanders and it kills the one who threatens the AoO... or that the AoO misses.
Edit: Come on, Sarenrae! 1, 1, 6.....

Zeladiel Araxyll |

"On my way."
Zeladiel tosses a small seed at Thratnias that blossoms into a massive ball of cold blue flame, engulfing her and reaching her companion, but falling just short of Sajan.
fireball (DC Ref 17, cold) 5d6 + 2 ⇒ (1, 1, 1, 3, 3) + 2 = 11 x 1.5 cold
Zeladiel then hastily takes cover next to Grall (-G14)

DM Dan E |

Linah's will manifests in another blazing channel of positive energy, each of the salamanders shrinking back momentarily. However, the strong willed creatures seem to shrug off the worse of the effect though, hissing in anger at the priestess. The javelin salamander is scored on the face and arms but the damage is not enough to put it out of the fight.
Flamebrother Will 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14 pass
Javelin Salamander Will 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17 pass
Thratnias Will 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24 pass
Realising she could conceivably be caught between the three, Linah rushes toward Sajan and Khalid. Leaning back from Sajan, the salamander lashes out yet again with its tail, hitting the poor cleric hard in the chest a blow she feels even through her fine armour. The cunning creature batters her again and again with the tip, preventing her movement. Grappled in C,8.
AOO Tail Slap vs Linah 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26 hit
2d6 + 4 ⇒ (3, 5) + 4 = 12 Note miss against Khalid above applied the secondary effect modifier in error.
Grab vs Linah 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (5) + 16 = 21 success
Constrict damage if hit 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (5, 5) + 4 = 14
Zeladiel's spell washes over both salamanders, the cold damage again particularly potent against the creatures but the two seem almost ready for the attack, ducking their heads down into the lava to avoid most of the effect. The salamander currently holding Linah has too much of its body above the surface to properly shield itself though, its body covered in wounds it clearly cannot take much more.
Reflex Javelin Salamander 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26 pass
Reflex Thratnias 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26 pass
Thratnias hisses at her consort.
Retreat and heal! I will handle them!
So had a good look at the issue. I remain of the view that a grappler can't use auto-positioning to place the grapplee into a hazardous square. The issue is whether the grapple fails unless there is an open, adjacent non-hazardous square (the rules say only open adjacent). Partly bearing in mind this may effect Sajan's grappling moving forward (he will often be grappling while enlarged for 10' reach), I've decided the grapple goes though but the auto-movement is ignored if there isn't a non-hazardous space which seems like the fair compromise all around.
Note moving someone grappled into a hazardous space can be done with a move action (although the grapplee gets a free action to break free)...
Grall is up.

Grall |

Grall 5' shifts to -f/12 and fires two arrows at the creature hoping in its grapled state it is easier to hit!
Composite +2 STR Bow atk fatigued into melee 1d20 + 8 - 1 - 4 ⇒ (13) + 8 - 1 - 4 = 16 dam 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Composite +2 STR Bow atk fatigued into melee 2nd 1d20 + 8 - 1 - 4 - 5 ⇒ (3) + 8 - 1 - 4 - 5 = 1 dam 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Sorry guys the dice have completely abandoned me....

DM Dan E |

Grall's first shot clips the salamander's shoulder but simply bounces off the hard scales, the second goes wide, the vapour in the chamber making it difficult for the gnoll to draw a bead.
The salamander impeding Linah seems inclined to crush her, but wounded as it is its instinct for self preservation seems to prevail. It releases the priestess, withdrawing down into the lava with a frustrated hissing and vanishing from sight.
Khalid is up.

Sajan Krama Sumna |

Surely there are plenty of squares adjacent to the creature that are not hazardous- above the lava, grappling her in mid-air. Its still an adjacent square and is very thematic- you could even describe it as trying to force her down into the lava (which it could try and do with later checks). Agreed you can't auto-position someone into a hazardous square on the initial check- if there are no viable squares available I believe the grapple simply fails.

![]() |

Khalid lashes out with two quick strikes at the creature holding Linah against her will...
Attack:1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 8 + 1 = 26 (haste)
Damage:1d6 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 + 1d6 ⇒ 3 x 1.5 cold = 10 Total
Haste Attack:1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 8 + 1 = 22 (haste)
Damage:1d6 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 + 1d6 ⇒ 4 x 1.5 cold = 12 Total

Aware of the restriction. Was looking to balance the imperative against the exception. Can see not moving her as coming across as unintuitive though. Lets say the grapple pulls Linah to D-9 but she is able to stand on the solid ground. She is released there when the salamander took its withdraw action.

DM Dan E |

Khalid delays, waiting for Thratnias's approach. Note Nuveril can act any time. I'm assuming she'll do so before the salamanders but as its unlikely to affect their actions I'll proceed.
The wounded flamebrother drags itself over the rocky ground. If the creature is not simply fighting on its rage alone it can't be far off. The wicked creature seems to smile though as it closes on the isolated Linah. (E,8)
I have thiss one, Thratniass! 'Ware the large warm blood is powerful!
The salamander attacks with its spear in both hands, abandoning all subtlety and stabbing again and again at the priestess's exposed areas. Linah manages to turn away blow after blow with her scimitar but without her shield each attack gets closer than the last until the salamander finally scores a long cut to the priestess's left arm that leaves her staggered. The flamebrother hisses in anticipation of its impending kill...
Spear vs Linah 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20 hit!
1d6 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Thratnias still holds what you can only assume is another lightning javelin in her left hand but appears to have tired of the hit and run tactics. She comes in hard and fast into the space her consort vacated (C,10). She wastes no words but you fancy that as she comes her pointed teeth seem to elongate.
Attacking Sajan, she thrusts with her shortspear, probing the monk's defenses. The nature of her weapon is revealed as Sajan makes what he thinks is a routine block. The point of the spear delivers a painful jolt of electricity, momentarily slowing the monk and allowing the salamander to land a thankfully shallow cut to the monk's ribs. As Sajan falls back, the salamander whips her spear straight over and across at Khalid. A strong attack but one that the inquisitor manages to read and his frosty blade meets the serpent's electrical one in a shower of sparks.
Short spear vs Sajan 1d20 + 15 - 3 ⇒ (15) + 15 - 3 = 27 (power attack) hit
1d6 + 6 + 6 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + 6 + 6 + (1) = 15 (shock)
Cleave vs Khalid 1d20 + 15 - 3 ⇒ (4) + 15 - 3 = 16 miss
1d6 + 6 + 6 + 1d6 ⇒ (5) + 6 + 6 + (2) = 19
Cleave provides - 2 AC.
The mephit seems content to opportunistically observe the encounter (at least for now). It turns to Zeladiel.
Andgrronakrraks knows the trruth. Nasty mans made deal with Lessarr. Nasty mans get what they deserrve for not trreating Andgrronakrraks with rrespect. Thrratnias rrespects Andgrronakrraks now oh yes. Andgrronakrraks will lead the flamebrothers when Thrratnias deals with Lessarr!
Delay for Khalid and Nuveril to resolve. I'll allow Khalid to keep his rolls but he might want to change what he is doing. Note Linah is on 0hp.
Edit spear damage missed + 1 from weapon and a co-ord error.

![]() |

You are bound and determined to make sure I never get to make an attack roll aren't you...it's only a 5ft move to get to C-8 so I can heal her, but it is a jump so I imagine the movement will provoke and take a chance of being grappled by Thratnias. Am I assuming correctly? Just want to make sure before proceeding.

DM Dan E |

I wouldn't say bound.
Yes provided (i) succesful acro avoids of course and (ii) you might just take a hit not the grapple/constrict. The way I read the rules she can't take a free to drop the grapple until her next turn leaving her with the grappled condition and another -2 to AC for Sajan's full. Off-balance from the cleave, she might or might not choose to do that. Note being small the flamebrother does not have 10' reach with its tail as far as you can tell.
Note also as above they're not totally free to attack you from the lava with impunity. Hope people aren't forgetting higher ground bonus as above.

Nuveril |

I'll wait for Khalid to do whatever he's going to do. If he gets off of the island, it leaves a little room for Nuveril, although all she can do is get there and put herself in the way to be attacked. Did we decide that was a DC 10 jump? Can she make an Acrobatics check to avoid AoO after the Acrobatics check for the jump?
