Peredur ap Erevel |

Peredur took Survival even though he's an urban ranger. He's OK at it; +11 when tracking.
"It's her footwear I'm after wanting to know more about. Might I see your shoes, ladies?"

Peredur ap Erevel |

The ranger begins to circle around the camp, looking for tracks.
Perception check: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (12) + 14 = 26
Survival check-tracking: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13

Sour Heck |

Sour Heck follows Peredur around the moor, calling Aleece’s name and swatting insects. Every once in a while, he points out rocks the girl might have fallen over, holes she might have fallen down, low branches she might have lost an eye to, and field mice that might have devoured her corpse.
If Peredur’s survival check fails to find Aleece’s trail, Sour Heck casts Gallant Inspiration, which adds a retroactive bonus to a skill check that can turn failure into success.
Bonus from Gallant Inspiration (if necessary): 2d4 ⇒ (3, 2) = 5

DM Corvus |

Peredur finds the tracks easily enough. They lead south and east out of the camp, following a rough path for a half-mile or so. The path leads into a boggy-river valley, and then quickly into the outskirts of a marsh.
Reeds grow high here, some over 8 feet tall. The tracks quickly fade away as the water level overtakes the path. Peredur is able to follow, though, a bent reed here, and the like, lead the party to cramped clearing that seems to almost float on the surrounding marsh.
Dismal-looking gray flowers grow in the damp earth. Surrounding the clearing, the reeds are thick and tall.
An agonized, terrified scream, high-pitched, female, and shatters the quiet rustling of the marsh.
The screaming voice seems... off. Not quite human? Not quite normal? It's hard to say, and it could very well be a result of the girl's... condition.

Peredur ap Erevel |

Peredur makes the check on a 1.
The ranger looks up quickly at the sound, trying to get a bearing on it while drawing his sword. "Something odd about th' cry...." Did the party ever hear the other sisters speak?

Eloise Tow |

Perception 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
"Is it a trap, perhaps?" Eloise asks as she draws her sword.

Peredur ap Erevel |

Peredur nods. "Perhaps. Best we go carefully."

Iesha Shadowstar-Petrosca |

Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
"The cry did sound odd, but, perhaps her condition? Lets be cautious, regardless."

Eloise Tow |

"Agreed. Lead on, Peredur. I'll take the rear in case something tries to ambush us. Iesha, Talia, second place for healing purposes. Sour Heck, by my side," Eloise says. "Ten feet between ranks in case of a trap. Go!"

DM Corvus |

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
The party walks into the clearing, dry land again beneath their feet. The surrounding marsh now completely silent.
At least for a moment.
The scream comes again, but from a different direction completely.
The reeds rustle for a moment, off the to the west, but then fall silent.

Sour Heck |

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
“So, if this is a this trap we’re oh-so-cautiously sticking our necks into, do we want to get there before or after the bait dies horribly? Because that did not sound good.”

Peredur ap Erevel |

The ranger holds up a hand. "Something moving, close by." He looks for anything out of the ordinary where he heard the movement.
Perception check: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (14) + 14 = 28

Eloise Tow |

Perception 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6.
Eloise fills her lungs and bellows out loud: "ALEECE! ALEECE! CALL TO US IF YOU CAN HEAR US!"
More quietly, she adds: "Guide us, Peredur. You're best at this."

DM Corvus |

Iesha 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
Peredur 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Sour Heck 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Talia 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Eloise 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
spider 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
The words barely pass Eloise's lips, before something utterly monstrous simply appears before the party.
Larger than horse, in fact, almost the size of one of the wagons the party just passed, a spider, with the hideously misshapen head of a woman rears before the party.
"Feast! Feast!" it chitters in an empty voice, before it lunges at Eloise, baring wicked, greenish fangs.
Bite Attack vs eloise: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17
The fangs sink deep into the woman's forearm as she tries to fend off the sudden attack.
Damage: 2d6 + 7 ⇒ (2, 2) + 7 = 11
Fortitude Save Vs. Poison, DC 18: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Constitution Damage: 1d2 ⇒ 1
The fangs sink deep, tearing away at the woman's flesh, leaving a slimy green residue that sucks at the woman's vitality.
"Feast!" it chitters again, through bloody lips, and then the horrible thing vanishes, as quickly as it arrived.
Eloise is poisoned, and suffers 1d2 con damage each round for 8 rounds. She can attempt to save each round at fort vs DC 18. 2 consecutive rounds and she's cured.
End Surprise Round.

Sour Heck |

Does the spider act again before we do?

Eloise Tow |

o_o One attack, and I'm down to 19 hp... Please tell me someone prepared Lesser Restoration or that we still have antivenom.
"Sc... Scutum!" Eloise chokes out, her eyes going wide, then squeezing shut in pain. A pulsing rectangle of force appears before her, moving as her gaze does.
Eloise casts Shield.
Knowledge checks to identify this creature:
Knowledge (arcana) 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30
Knowledge (dungeoneering) 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
Knowledge (planes) 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
Knowledge (religion) 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

Eloise Tow |

"A phase spider," Eloise grunts, shivering with the poison's effects. "It will... it will phase in from the ethereal plane, poison prey and weaken it... before settling down to feed."
The Magus turns pale and starts to sweat. "Ambush predator," Eloise chokes out as one of her legs buckles beneath her, and she slowly sinks to one knee in the marsh. "Solitary most of the time... Ye gods, this is vile! I... I don't think I'm going to..."
Eloise vomits helplessly, her body trembling as the poison takes hold.

Sour Heck |

Sour Heck takes a firmer grip on his longspear. “This may sound crazy, but I don’t think that was Aleece. On the other hand, I’m sure it would be a great addition to the freak show.”
He squints at Eloise. “Did you know bards are supposed to learn the healing arts? Never could bring myself to sew something that bleeds when you stick the needle in, though. Too bad none of my old teachers are here...I bet some of them were pretty good at treating poisoned wounds.”
Sour Heck begins to Inspire Courage.
Party buffs: +2 to attack rolls and weapon damage (+1 competence from Inspire Courage, +1 morale from Flagbearer); +1 to saves versus fear and charm effects (from both).
HP: 34/34--Status: None

Peredur ap Erevel |

Round 1:
Peredur launches himself at the unnatural arachnid, but skids on an inconvenient patch of pond scum and nearly falls over.
Longsword on phase spider, incl. inspire courage: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 8 + 1 = 10
The last three d20 rolls I've made on the boards have been a 1, a 2, and another 1. Feh.

Iesha Shadowstar-Petrosca |

Iesha rushes over and casts Cure Light Wounds on Eloise, dropping Bless Water.
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Eloise Tow |

Fortitude save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19.
"Th - thank you," Eloise grunts as she struggles back to her feet. "If that... thing attacked Aleece, sh - she's probably dead... by now. L - let's keep going. The ph - phase spider will probably f - follow me on the... ethereal plane. It's waiting for me to... weaken and die."
Despite these grim words, Eloise looks much improved, thanks to Iesha's quick help and Talia's magical warding. She mutters a brief spell and looks around, the black blade a little steadier in her hand.
Detect Magic, just in case the Phase Spider's phasing leaves an aura I can trace. Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12. Ready action to attack at the first sign of the spider returning, if possible? ^^

Eloise Tow |

The instant the phase spider reappears, Eloise's weakness seems to fade like morning fog under the sun. Growling with fury, she uncoils, the black blade whistling as it cleaves the air on its way to the monster's body.
Eloise uses one arcane pool point for a +1 enhancement to the Black Blade. Attack roll: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24 for damage 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9.

Peredur ap Erevel |

Peredur again misses as the phase spider reappears.
Longsword attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14

Sour Heck |

I'm waiting to see if the spider acts again before submitting a 2nd round action.

DM Corvus |

The spider appears again, this time closer to Sour Heck.
"Feast!" it screeches and lunges at the bard.
Bite attack at Sour Heck: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30
Critical Confirmation: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19
Crit Damage: 2d6 + 7 + 2d6 + 7 ⇒ (5, 3) + 7 + (4, 2) + 7 = 28
The creature manages to sink its fangs into the bard's neck, drawing back in a spray of blood.
Fortitude Save, DC 18: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Con damage: 1d2 ⇒ 1
Heck is poisoned and suffers 1d2 con damage each round for 8 rounds. He can attempt to save each round at fort vs DC 18. 2 consecutive rounds and he's cured.
Reacting quickly to the appearance of the spider, Eloise scores a vengeful hit against the beast, drawing green ichor from its side. Peredur misses again, swinging wide, and just a moment too late.

Eloise Tow |

I forgot about using Spellstrike to augment this attack to best effect...! ^^; Would you mind my adding a Shocking Grasp to this attack for 4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 1, 2) = 7 electricity damage? I'll understand very well if you say no.

Sour Heck |

Sour Heck claps his free hand over the bloody gash in his throat. “My favorite neck!” he gasps.
Fortitude Save Vs. Poison, DC 18: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Con Damage: 1d2 ⇒ 1
The bard’s knees buckle beneath him as the abomination’s venom takes hold. He stumbles away from the spider, sagging against his longspear, his blood streaking the pennant as it flaps against him. Fumbling at his pouch with rapidly numbing fingers, he pulls out a potion bottle, uncorks it, and drinks desperately.
Sour Heck maintains his Inspire Courage and makes a 5’ step away before drinking a Potion of Lesser Restoration.
Con points restored: 1d4 ⇒ 2
HP: 6/34--Status: 1d2 Con poison, 1/8 rounds passed, 0/2 saves made

Talia Senshir |

Round 2:
With a startled gasp, Talia races to Sour Heck. "Oh no you don't, bard-boy. I still owe you a drink. You're not dying while I owe a debt to you!" Talia places a hand upon his wound, and healing energy flows through her fingers.
Healing Hex: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Eloise - The ward is still active on you: +2 to your next Fort Save and AC.

Sour Heck |

Sour Heck lifts his face to Talia’s as her healing knits his wound shut. “Maybe it’s the poison,” he says, “But hearing you say that with so much concern in your lovely voice, it sounds to me like you would really like to buy me a drink, then kill me.”

Iesha Shadowstar-Petrosca |

Iesha casts Bless on the group, then readies her glaive to try and catch the creature on it's next appearance.

Sour Heck |

Bless gives morale bonuses that don’t stack with the bonus from Sour Heck’s Flagbearer feat. On the bright side, once he dies from an untreated poisoned wound, the Bless will be quite useful. :)

Iesha Shadowstar-Petrosca |

Darn it! Um, Corvus, if Protection From Evil, communal would work better, she'll cast that instead.

Sour Heck |

And super helpful, thanks.
Looking blearily about, Sour Heck readies his longspear for a defensive attack, should the monstrous spider reappear.
Readied attack, fighting defensively: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Readied attack damage: 1d8 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 2 = 9
His eyes flutter shut for a moment, and he sways on his feet from the poison.
Fortitude Save Vs. Poison, DC 18:: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 2 = 7
“I feel like I’m eight years old again, dizzy ‘cause I’d snuck swigs of my mom’s moonshine. She’d smack me until I couldn’t see straight.”
Sour Heck casts Saving Finale, which ends his bardic performance, to grant himself another saving throw versus the poison.
Fortitude Save Vs. Poison, DC 18:: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 4 + 2 = 21
The bard seems to be fighting the effects off.
HP: 15/34--Status: Status: 1d2 Con poison, 2/8 rounds passed, 1/2 saves made
Party buffs: +2 to attack rolls and weapon damage (+1 competence from Inspire Courage (will last 2 rounds from Lingering Performance), +1 morale from Flagbearer); +1 to saves versus fear and charm effects (from both)

Eloise Tow |

Eloise takes a deep breath and sighs it out as she assumes a ready stance, the black sword held in a two-handed grip.
Eloise readies an action to attack the Phase Spider again as soon as it appears. Swift action to expand a pool point for +1 enhancement; attack roll 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15 for 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12 damage.
The Magus draws in another deep breath as she braces herself against the poison's onslaught.
Fortitude save 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22.

Peredur ap Erevel |

"Keep th' thing off of me, should it return...if it poisoned Aleece, she may be nearby and dying."
Peredur looks for Aleece's tracks.
Survival check to track: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27

Sour Heck |

It won't stack with the Protection from Evil. Thanks anyway.
