"Maxillar has closed the Qadiran consulate in Zimar," Eutropia says. "But Martella is in Qadira now acting as our liaison. If you use sending spells to pass on any pertinent information you discover, she will do her best to keep the peace as best she can."

Katria looks around at the others, pretty sure they've asked everything they need to before going to meet Kathann Zalar, where she also hopes to do some shopping i.e. the items I noted earlier in the discussion thread.

Think I'm ready to move on.


Before you depart, Princess Eutropia hands you the ocarina to return the Academy. The ocarina itself is remarkable in that it is expertly crafted from porcelain and inlaid with silver details, but it's small and has no magical properties. The remainder of the Blades' letter requests only that you remain discreet in your association, and meet Kathann in the Academy's gardens, on a bench under the administrator's offices at sunset.

The princess also presents you with a package Martella left for you. Inside is a clockwork spy built in the shape of a large beetle with a single, jeweled eye.

The unique construct has a 10-foot climb speed in addition to its other abilities, and has been built to obey your commands, offering you the ability to surveil targets and record short audio clips.

"You have your task, my friends. Good luck. I look forward to hearing about your latest success."

Once you are ready, you take your carriage south to Oppara. The trip to the capital proves a quiet week's travel, though you pass by the site of a recent battle between Loyalist and Imperialist forces that took place in southern Tandak recently. By this point the bodies have been cleared from the impromptu battlefield, but the freshly turned soil of recent graves remains visible from the road, and the faint stink of death lingers. Nearly two-thirds of Taldor has now thrown their support behind Princess Eutropia, but its evident that Maxillar Pythareus's remaining supporters will not back down quietly.

Soon enough, you find yourselves in Oppara. As sunset approaches, you make your way to the Kitharodian Academy, the largest bard college in the city. The location where you are supposed to meet Kathann is easy to find; the administrators' windows are a stained glass affair, propped slightly open in the warm evening, with a large, stone bench below.

You linger for a bit, but Kathann is late in arriving. However, after a short time, two men wearing blue‑and‑green guard uniforms and armed with halberds approach. The taller of the two guards calls out, "Good evening. Stay where you are. We have a few questions for you. Who are you? Why are you loitering on the Academy grounds?"

"We're waiting for someone," Katria says, wary, but hoping this is nothing more than formality. She wouldn't think a Lion Blade would be late; that's something she would never do unless something was wrong.

Is this Kathann's peculiar sense of humor that the Princess warned us about? We were told to be discreet about our association - is this a test, with these guards loyal to Kathann? Or is it a genuine problem, with these guards on the side of Maxillar Pythareus?

Are the blue and green colors known to be associated with either the Loyalist or Imperialist sides, or are they simply the colors these guards are wearing?

"My name is Liam. As my friend says, we are waiting for someone. Is there a problem?"

”I’ll ask the questions!” the guard barks. ”Someone reported a break‑in at the Academy. I'm sure you don't mind if I have a quick look at your belongings?"

Katria tries to tell how concerned she should be. She's not really all that worried about her supplies ... but at the same time, they're certainly not what the average Opparan citizen carries.

Liam stiffens. He tries to be polite but firm... and he affects the aristocratic speech from his upbringing, talking down to the guardsman a bit.
"No, I do not consent to a search of my belongings. We are not the thieves you seek, and you have no cause to suspect us of such. I resent the accusation, guardsman."

"I will tell you, though, that we bring an item to the Academy. An ocarina, constructed by a master artisan of the Academy. It has been outside of Zimar for centuries, and we now come to return it.
Tell me, is the ocarina what was reported stolen?"

The ocarina seemed the thing that would cause the most trouble for us if found. Well, that and the clockwork spy.
If his words are seen as an Intimidate, Liam is out of luck. He's no good at that. But hoping it is 'Diplomacy with an edge' and he can Take 10 for a 26.

Oppara. Amelia had heard of the place but was excited to see what it was all about. She loved the arts, or more accurately, loved being loved by the arts. That wasn't to say she didn't appreciate it, but the undertones of the people who patronized the arts were something else.

If Liam's nice method fails, she will goad them.

Getting stopped by the guards however quickly dispelled her fantasy, "You're looking for thieves? Tell me, what thief you know travels in by carriage, dresses as we do, and then chooses to remain at the scene of the crime?" She rolls her eyes, "Simpletons."

"I am an esteemed guest from Taldor and I have come here for a practice before a performance. My old master lays sick at the Academy and had something for me."

Seth's hand drifts towards the hilt of his sword, almost without him wanting to, as he narrows his eyes in case this turns south. Still, he trusts Liam enough to hope that his tactic is the right one.


The guard's eyes narrow when he sees the ocarina. "Yes, that is exactly what we are looking for. I'm going to have to take you in for questioning. We'll sort this out in the morning."

The pair steps forward menacingly, but then, after a beat, they break into laughter! He pulls at his neck, peeling off a disguise and revealing the face of a grinning Vudrani woman with golden eyes. Katria and Maya may or may not remember her as the "guard" that waved you through the line at the senate building on the Day of Exaltation.

"My apologies for having a bit of fun at your expense. We needed to test your ability to deflect nosy authorities. Welcome to the Kitharodian Academy, agents. My name is Kathann Zalar. Cassaranda has told me a lot about you."

The other guard peels off his disguise as well, and you see the baby face of Cassaranda Florint, the Lion Guard you rescued from beneath the Encircling Bower in Yanmass. "Good to see you all again, friends," she says.

"We'll make sure the ocarina is returned to its rightful place. In the meantime, why don't we head inside for coffee and a tour of the facility?"

A closer look at Kathann reveals a forked tongue and a pair of small fangs in her smile.

Katria relaxes as the two reveal themselves; she'd despaired for a second about this task. If they couldn't even meet the contact, it would truly be a mission impossible. She notes Kathann's tongue and fangs, giving a mental shrug as her heart slows down from its fright.

"That would be lovely," she says, hoping none of the rest mistake the vishkanya for a tiefling.1

1 Not that there's anything wrong with tieflings, of course, but some people carry around silly prejudices. She hopes her companions wouldn't, naturally, but one never knows.

Liam had been quite tense, but relaxes.
"Apology accepted." Silently, he adds, Kathann is lucky for our patience and good judgment. There are many in our 'odd jobs' line of work who would have drawn steel at the first hint of trouble.

Amelia watches her rip the disguise off and lets out a beleaguered sigh, "Well, jokes on us I suppose. At least we know you're as trained as we've been told."

She gives a sweeping bow, more to grant her a moment to compose her face.

"Apology accepted however, and should you have good coffee, you can get an extra apology for another trick."


Kathann gives you a quick tour around the Academy's campus and allows you to sit on classes as you wish, introducing you to curious attendees as "visiting scholars." The classes range from vocal training to stage presence to musical theory. Once you have seen the area, she escorts you to the faculty lounge.

Kathann pours fresh cups of coffee, tea, or wine for each of you, depending on your preference. She hands you the drinks and sits down across from you. "Lady Lotheed seemed optimistic about your group back during the Exaltation Gala. I'm pleased to meet you in a more formal setting, and I'm quite pleased you didn’t die. So please do tell me: what is your purpose in working for our princess?"

Though she tried to be subtle, it doesn't escape your notice that Kathann has slipped a little bit of some elixir in each of your drinks...

She rolled a 3 on her Sleight of Hand check. :P

Amelia sits down, and it doesn't take long for her to get comfortable. The aura of the academy almost was like catnip to her, it felt nice; a change of pace from Yanmass.

Noticing Kathann slipping something into the drinks, she takes the drink and swishes it around for a bit idly, "What is our purpose? I can't speak for the others but I can definitely speak for myself. I think I would love to see our princess take the throne, in fact I would say it is a longstanding goal of mine to see a Queen in Taldor."

She is about to sip on it and gives a icy gaze, "In fact I would go so far as to say that our journey so far has been draught," The pretender pretends to catch herself, her emphasis being clear, "Sorry, fraught, with treachery thus far." Putting the glass down, she feigns another smile.

"My purpose is to oppose tyranny. Be it a Grand Prince or a Grand Princess. I think Princess Eutropia's reformist vision extends beyond merely allowing a woman to ascend the Primogen Throne, to re-imagining the role of monarch. It is my hope that she can lead Taldor on a path to greater freedom."

Liam looks at his drink and does not sip. "If this is another jest of yours, it is not a laughing matter. We are guests under your roof."


Kathann chuckles. "Fair enough. I apologize for the examination--and the bit of truth elixir in your drinks--but in my career, paranoia is a survival trait. Normally, the Lion Blades would never consider working so directly with strangers, especially those with a political agenda, but recent events have forced our hand and we need new eyes in Zimar quickly."

She give the rest of you a chance to share your views, after which, she seems satisfied. "Alright, let's get to it, then. Normally, true Lion Blade training takes months or years, but we're going to give you a crash course. We'll teach you just what you need to know about Zimar and its people to get by for a few weeks. I'll explain more about the situation there... if you survive training! I'm sure you'll be fine, though. We pride ourselves on our minimal mortality rate!"

You'll spend the next week undergoing intense training, focused not on combat but on stealth, deflection, observation, and disguise. Have each PC select one Charisma‑based skill, one Intelligence‑based skill, and three additional skills (which can include additional Charisma‑ or Intelligence‑based skills) to focus her training on. Alternatively, combat‑focused PCs can opt to focus on training their melee attacks or ranged attacks in place of a skill. Each PC can attempt at a single DC 22 skill check or an attack against AC 22 each day; success means that the PC has achieved 1 week (7 days) of training in that skill or type of attack. Once a PC succeeds at this check with at least four of her chosen skills or types of attacks, she succeeds at the training challenge.

At the end of your training, you'll gain uses of inspiration for the remainder of the adventure to use on those skills or attacks you have trained in. I'll give you more details about that later.

Glad that any further confrontations are stemmed quickly -- this cooperation doesn't seem to be getting off on the best foot, if she's honest -- Katria dives into the training. Learning things has always been one of her favorite things to do -- along with teaching things, though she frequently gets too involved in such efforts to truly be good at it.

I'll pick the following skills: Craft (Int), since I'm already pretty good at/have inspiration already with the rest of them; Disguise (Cha), ranged attacks, Perception and Sense Motive. The week of training with the Lion Blades' various specialists passes swiftly, which each of you managing to pick up as many tips and tricks as possible. At the end of the week, Kathann Zalar calls you all together.

A wave of Kathann's hand encompasses an enormous performance hall, which now stands empty and echoing. "The instructors have praised your progress this past week, so I believe it's time for a final test of your skills." She gestures to several ornate, lion‑themed masks on the edge of the stage. "These masks are tools the Lion Blades use to discreetly simulate dangerous training scenarios. Once your don them, you'll be able to see, hear, and feel opponents as if they were real. Your task is simple: eliminate the witnesses. And please be careful with the masks, as they are quite old."

As you don the masks, you can see four guards milling about on the performance stage. Once all of you are wearing the masks, one of the guards points and shouts, "There! Arrest the traitors!" and the guards rush to attack.

The guards are the witnesses to your "crimes." Your only instructions are to eliminate them!

Katria steps back from the guards, pulling Dignity's Barb as she does and concentrating for a moment on the nearest one, trying to warp his mind.

"Don't let them escape," she calls out to her companions. It was nice to be able to practice in a way that she knew she wasn't actually in real danger, or wouldn't have to kill anyone.

Amelia eyed the masks, not like she would know any better if they were enchanted with something devious. Waiting for Katria to go ahead, she shrugged and donned it.

Seeing the phantom fighters on the stage, she draws her weapon and begins to casually dispatch the foes; going for the one that is being assaulted by Seth.

Just in case, I did choose Andor as a 3rd favored nation, doubt it will do anything this adventure but just resolving that earlier question. Also in Urban Settings, my base Initiative is +3, but skyrockets by +6 to a +9 total (or +11 total if we're at a party or formal function!) I think my ticker under the name is a bit ambiguous so I'm just clarifying for before it makes a difference.

He sees the 'enemies' and begins INSPIRE COURAGE +2!


Katria influences one of the guards with murderous command while Liam begins his inspiring chant. Amelia and Seth aggressively assault the nearest guard, stabbing him several times in vital spots. He groans and crumples to the floor. As he falls, though, the images from the masks begin to swirl and heave. The remaining guards vanish, and you hear a bone-chilling roar from behind you, where an immense wingless dragon rears up on a serpentine body! Its triple tail and powerful talons swipe at the air!

Knowledge (arcana) DC 24:
This deadly, priemval dragon is a crag linnorm. The crag linnorm is among the weakest of its kind, yet still a devastating predator in its own right. It can breathe forth lines of magma and deliver a devastating poison with its bite. Crag linnorms resist weapons not made from cold iron. They are highly resistant to magic and immune to curses, fire, and mind-affecting effects.

The dragon opens its mouth and spews forth a line of burning magma at Amelia and Seth!

Breath Weapon: 15d8 ⇒ (6, 8, 8, 8, 5, 4, 2, 6, 6, 1, 1, 7, 5, 3, 8) = 78

78 fire damage to Amelia and Seth (Reflex DC 24 for half). This line of magma remains red-hot for 1 round after the linnorm creates it. Creatures that took damage on the first round take 6d6 fire damage the second round (Reflex DC 24 negates), as does any creature that walks across the line of magma. Note that this damage won't actually kill you--at worst, you will just fall unconscious.

Oh damn... that is a lot of damage. It looks like Seth's new HP are 73, so if he fails that he is negative but not 'dead'. I will figure out what I am doing after seeing the result of Amelia and Seth's saves.

With wide eyes, Seth reacts to the sudden appearance of a dragon with a practiced motion, supercharging his shield, causing the normally invisible plane of force to become merely translucent; a blue-gray wall appearing between him and the powerful blast of fire.

Using the Instant Cover variant of Shield to create a 25 hardness and 25 HP wall of force as an immediate action. Depending on if the fire only deals half damage (as if the shield were an object) to the wall, it should either soak up 50 damage or stop the breath entirely. Then, again depending on the order it happens, the 50 damage would apply before my Reflex save (and make it a save vs 24 points of damage) or after (and negate the damage altogether on a save). In any case, I’m just going to roll my save and go with whatever.

Wary of the dragon, Seth circles the beast (ensuring he isn’t in a line with anyone) and draws a wand, reapplying his defenses.

After a fairly simple parry with his mage shield, Seth breathes out, cold mist exhaling from his mouth. He dashes forwards, trusting in his ability to dodge to avoid the dragon, and his blade glows with frigid energy as he tries to make a powerful strike to the dragon's midsection.

Moving up to the linnorm and casting Frigid Touch. If it hits and bypasses spell resistance, it's staggered for 1 round.

Katria opens fire on the linnorm, striking it with her first bolt but not quite piercing its hide with the follow-up shots. Amelia darts in, parrying the dragon's opportunistic attack, but her blade scrapes harmlessly against its scales. As Seth rushes in, the linnorm snaps at him again, this time tearing through his defenses. Undeterred, the elf slices the dragon with an ice-infused blade, staggering the creature!

The linnorm rears up and snaps at the magus again, but this time Seth dodges aside! Its wounds begin to regenerate!

Bite: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (2) + 19 = 21

36 damage to Seth. Everybody is up!

Will save my Immediate Action to Bestow Luck for an ally if a breath attack comes, otherwise I will use it to Parry.

Koriana's Blade is treated as Cold Iron/Silver and I think Alignment (?) at +4.
Also if it's breath attack comes up, you all should have Heightened Reflexes for a +10 on a single Reflex roll. Don't forget!
