Yeah sure. Will see what I can come up with whilst free.

DM Aron Marczylo |

lmfao
Anyway, yes it might have come up in the past, but Vincent only really cares about making his family proud, bringing honor and prestiege to the family and finding a wife of his choosing if so.
The way I see it, his family has fallen out of favour with many of the noble families, however if he were to bring back treasure or tales of mighty heroics he might bring back some great honor and therefore, many more noble families would be interested in marrying off their daughters to him. Perhaps even families that are distant cousins of a king or regent of somekind.
Really it's all selfishness, but at the same time he wouldn't let evil run rampent across the world and sooner stick a blade in a demon's chest than make a deal with it.
The whole scandle is that his grandmother gave birth whilst out of wedlock. The person she was with could never be found so there were many theories and insults suggesting that this man never exsisted and it was probably some peasant or worse. Fact was the man was a dragon and the family, which already had a strong link with magic, become stronger when his father became a wizard and managed to out duel many other family's best spell casters, however that still wasn't enough to rub the shame off the family, but it has improved their standing somewhat.
Where his father took the abuse of other families, Vincent didn't and often out witted others with his words and tricked them with his silver tongue for talk. After learning some noble families use to be great heroes he decided to set out to become one himself. He's a noble, how hard could it possibly be? Everyone knows their place and monsters know to fall before his blade and with this group, he has learnt that monsters are too stupid to care about nobility and bloodlines, so he makes sure to help lead the group in couragues battles, finding that he had a natural talent to help goat people into combat.
that's what I have so far. Just off the top of my head.

DM Aron Marczylo |

Lol, well that's just off the top of my head. I'm sure I could flesh it all out a bit more. Failing on a surname I just typed some names in draconic translator to get the name.

I made Marcus a noble as well although seemingly the opposite of Vincent in several ways which should be interesting.
For the IC discussion I'm working off the map if anyone hasn't looked at it yet. Looks like the Desolation itself is divided into four quadrants divided by a n-s and e-w road. It doesn't have a scale but presumably we have a vague idea of how big it is DM? At least in the sense of how many hours/days it would take to traverse a quadrant.
The big Orcus looking thing on the city itself kind of freaks me out. I have a total meta urge not to try and wander in there immediately but I think our characters would be cautious as well. Its a fortress after all whether or not it has an evil army attached.
All the quadrant descriptions: The Dead Fields, Ashen Wastes, Chaos Rift, Boiling Land sound equally unpleasant to me and presumably our characters.
DM on the website I seem to have lost access to lore entries I had before? Can no longer see any of the history stuff.

All look bad and a hillgiant, even though not known to be mentally stable, still turning insane makes me wonder what kind of cthulhuian horrors he must've escaped from to have driven him mad. All kinds of questions really, but Vincent hopes there's tresures to aquire where they're going. Maybe something big with diamonds to bring back home or some sort of artifact of great significance.

Dan E |

Something with an acid attack presumably. I had vaguely hoped we could take Gurg alive but even without his club he was doing too much damage for that.
As for treasure, were presumably going to end up spending hundreds of thousands of gp worth of loot to acquire items to acquire more loot in order to complete our quest and then incidentally get money sometime around what? Level 20 :) Hopefully Vincent is Ok with this.

Thanks for the notice :).
Once I get responses for my OOC questions ill update late tonight, narrating a few hours at once which will bring you to late afternoon.
Trying to nudge you a little bit but do remember its a sandbox, Marcus' pro-active stance is definitely the way to go.

Going to sunny Brighton tonight back tomorrow.
Also I assume you can't take a 10 on diplomacy...which is a shame as all my rolls suck so far.
Unless DM has ruled on this before don't see why you can't. Your not distracted or in combat. My two cents at least its generally taking 20 that is prohibited per skill.
But note above DM was talking about doing the checks anyway.

Drow lich king? You think too small. A Drow Dread Lich Warlord.

I wasn't soliciting applause... just commenting that the posting was slow in the IC thread. :) (There was 24+ hours between those 2 posts. :P )
Hope you feel better soon Max. What were you doing for your vacation that you got so banged up?

I know, but felt a jest coming on .... :)
Hope you feel better soon Max, with or without the aid of pain relieving drugs, preferably without I guess.
Will hopefully post tomorrow.

Thanks! I'm afraid my injuries aren't due to anything fun, but from struggling to adequately secure my young daughter's child-safety seat in her grandmother's tiny car. Getting old sucks. But the doctor seems to have gotten me on the road to recovery - at least it's easier to breathe without sharp pain now.

I hear you Max... I am staring down turning 41 on Monday myself. As an older friend of mine told me once, we all reach the time of "well that didn't use to..." (hurt like that, look like that, feel like that, take that long, etc, etc) :P
Cheers! :)

Wait til you reach the next decade ... 56 now and counting ... seem to have got some gall stones from somewhere ... ho hum!!
And I understand about backs and things too, take it easy and don't rush back let it heal properly.
But I did go see Halestorm a couple of Saturdays ago so life can't be all bad ... yeah!!!!!

I get the distinct impression that if we use detect evil a lot here... we are going to find a lot of evil here. ;)
This is why Alex warned that playing a paladin would be difficult in this campaign. We are going to have to let a lot of evil slide... and just concentrate on the Evil. :)

Thanks Deevor! And sorry to hear about the gall stones - hope everything works out!

To be honest my post was intended more as "So exactly what are we doing?".

DM Dan E |

So still not 100% sure on this evening's plan once we wrap these interactions up. Presumably getting dark by then. The giant's campsite seemed like a bit of a dump, is the idea to claim it at least for tonight? Then stay there or move to the boarding house? "Taking over" the embassy didn't seem like a bad idea but I got the impression it was like a single room deal.
Remaining people I can think of to talk to:
- tomorrow, the leader of the other mercenary group (maybe under the guise of hiring them?);
- tomorrow, the rangers (maybe under the guise or actual plan of hiring them?);
- a few more buildings on the map to check out (we seem to have the emporium for general gear, death priest for divine spellcasting and the Usurer for weapons and armour: would be helpful to determine anyone else selling things);
- we didn't actually talk to the drunken elf who I think was the livery owner (presumably he sold horses to the caravan?);
- Simon (and Sammar) are the only nice people we've run into, do we think there is anything more we can get out of him?;
- the Usurer seems pretty cluey (does he know more about the mysterious deaths than he lets on);
- the corpse taker clears up all of the dead bodies (maybe he has a clue, maybe he hurries them along?);
- Kiri can commune once a week for some divine guidance (I'd like to hold off on that until we have really good questions to ask but perhaps someone else can think of one).
Not within our current abilities but presumably we could wrangle a speak with dead / scroll from the hobgoblin to question the giant? Maybe more eligible targets in the corpse takers custody?
