Malthir Al' Dagon |

I am in a conference most of the day, so my posting will be spotty for much of the day.
Is your blade a boy or a girl? Are weapons commonly referred to by one or the other?
There are some warriors who refer to their blades as he or she. There are even legendary blades that ARE boys or girls. This was my brothers blade. I use it to remind me that my duty lies beyond myself. One of my favorite texts from The Acts says; Be it for glory, be it for honor, be it for justice, or be it for evil, the sword is just another arm of the warrior who wields it.
It means that the blade is just an extention of you. You can't blame a blade for murdering someone. You can't blame a blade for starting a war, you can only blame yourself. Look inward for the responsibility and take ownership of your actions. There are stories of this place, bad stories. She turns to look at Malthir, I don’t know if they are true, but I have heard many tales of otherworldly dangers that lie within these Stolen Lands. Faerie tales some may call them, but I have heard that this is the land of such creatures.
I would expect that some of them are true. Too long has this land gone without civilization, in its place have bandits and monsters come. Together we will reverse that trend. You don't sound silly, I think it is wise to be cautious. Malthir, hearing the comments about brothers, merely nods his head in agreement and enjoys the company in silience before retiring for the night.

DM Alexander Kilcoyne |

Vaysh approaches the two of them when her company is away (or one, if unable to speak with both), Do you have any fresh fruit that I can purchase? I would like to have something more than rations and my cooking to eat on the trail.
Also, Vaysh would be interested in learning a bit about first aid from Oleg since he is caring for us. She pays attention to what he does.
Noted. They refuse to let you pay for them, but they give you a fresh batch of apples traded from a local grower for some ales the previous night.

As you continue to continually see the tracks left by Happs and his men the previous day, most of you fail to spot the sinister looking shapes in the trees above you lying in ambush...

Fenna your up. Sorry for the poor quality of the map, I had to wait till I got home to throw something together and i'm exhausted.
You all hear what are clearly warcries, in a strange croaking voice as three frog-like humanoids prepare to launch their attack from low-hanging branches in the trees...
They are currently ten feet above you in the positions shown on the map. Treat every square on this map as difficult terrain due to the large amounts of vegetation and trees...

DM Alexander Kilcoyne |

Once more, into the breach, once more, then. We should resolve the healing from Fenna before this encounter goes any further.
Yup, was going to prompt but its up to Fenna.
Oh also, in case your wondering you are in threatened squares if your adjacent to them, being on mounts.

Fenna Thistleswade |

I've not got much time right now, as I'm about to travel up north, but I'll try to catch up on the roleplaying when I arrive.
Here's the healing for Casimir: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8, I've got 3 left for anyone else who needs it, I'll let the rest of the party decide how it's spread out since I'll be away until later tonight.
So you can NPC Fenna: During the combat, I plan to move to provide flanking for the burly menfolk and use stabilize as (hopefully un)necessary.
"Ambush!" The gnome cries, pointing up to the trees as she attempts to hop off her mount, Fast dismount 1d20 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 - 1 = 6 (fail), to the north-east, but again shows her lack of riding skills.

Casimir |

Sir Edric and Talia need at least on each. That one brought me easily to max.

Pre-Combat heals-
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 For Talia
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9 For Edric
Will have the creature's actions up within the hour :)

Vaysh |

Vaysh surprises herself with her keen notice of these strange creatures, Stay your attack and we shall stay ours, she calls out quickly. However, she quickly backs up behind Malthir and begins to enact her powerful sleep spell.
These creatures will never know what hit them, they have chosen to attack the wrong company, mayhaps we can find out why. I do not feel right in doing this while I hope for negotiation, but they have come at us with less obvious provocation than the bandits yesterday.
Day is done, dusk is here, my dreamer do not fear.
As Vaysh incants, a soft glow manifests within the symbol on her face.

Might need to re-think that move, the creature's beat you on initiative...
From its perch above Casimir, one of the creature's arches its back and begins emitting a loud, horrifying croaking noise...

Malthir's horse-1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
Vaysh' horse-1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
A wave of panic washes over the party, especially Casimir and Vaysh; but each of the Guardians of the Greenbelt shakes off the initial reaction of fear. Malthir appears particularily unfazed by the creature's noises.
The party's mounts are a totally different story, with the exception of Fenna's calm pony. Although they do not rear up and throw their riders off, the horses are clearly spooked and begin to panic...
The horses that failed their saves are shaken for the following number of rounds-
Talia- 1d4 ⇒ 4
Malthir's Mount- 1d4 ⇒ 4
Casimir's Mount- 1d4 ⇒ 1
Vaysh' Mount- 1d4 ⇒ 4
The boggard that croaked then jumps off the branch with surprising agility, landing beside Casimir and his shaken mount.
The other two Boggard's seem to have other ideas in mind than croaking...
The one closest to Vaysh suddenly opens his mouth from the safety of his high perch in the branches and the Boggard's long tongue snakes out towards Vaysh... But the spooked horse steps back suddenly in fear from the croaking, causing the Boggard's tongue to fall short. The Boggard leaps from the branch to land on the ground in front of Vaysh, a crude and dangerous looking morningstar in hand...
1d20 - 1 ⇒ (5) - 1 = 4
The Boggard in the trees above Fenna tries the same tactic against the bleachling Gnome, and Fenna sees the Boggard's snake-like tongue dart towards her with sudden speed... And gasps in horror as the fleshy thing wraps around her waist and goes taut... The Boggard grins with a wide, open mouth and leaps down with his morningstar ready.
You cannot move more than 10 feet away from the boggard and take a –2 penalty to AC as long as the tongue is attached (this penalty does not stack if multiple tongues are attached). The tongue can be removed by making an opposed Strength check as a standard action or by dealing 2 points of slashing damage to the tongue (AC 11, damage does not deplete the boggard's actual hit points).

The frog-like creatures are all on the ground now, and one has its tongue wrapped around Fenna who has dismounted. They all seem to wield morningstars in two hands and they all wear leather armour. They look pretty strong and tough. They are medium sized.
Vaysh your in a threatened square and can't five foot step. Your also mounted and your horse seems skittish... Do you want to amend your action now you have the full picture or shall I roll the AOO?

DM Alexander Kilcoyne |

It is a 5 step diagonally back. Couldn't move and cast in surprise anyway. Ah crud, forgot we are on mounts. Doubt I can get it to do that. I guess I would take a dismount in the surprise. Heading to the same destination square.
Just finished editing my post. You can't 5 foot step in difficult terrain, mount or not i'm afraid. You can certainly manage a dismount safely this round if that's what you wish?
I can't believe you all made that save... Man I rolled hot for you guys lol.
Regardless, surprise round is over. Initiative for Round One is available two posts up; Fenna's up before the Boggard's move again.

Fenna Thistleswade |

Fenna struggles ineffectively against the long rope-like tongue binding her waist, cringing in disgust, and fumbles around at her belt to retrieve her dagger.
She brandishes the blade towards the creature assaulting her, but fails to find an opportunity to strike.
standard action to draw a dagger (because of the haunted curse,) nothing to do with the move action.

DM Alexander Kilcoyne |

The Boggard whose tongue had missed Vaysh unleashes his own croaking frenzy, and once again the eerie and frightening sounds threaten to spook the party and the horses...
Will Saves-

Sir Edric-1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
Malthir-1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
Wow...
The party take solace in each other and their new-found bonds and friendships, all resisting the effects of the Boggard's eerie croaking.
Talia-1d20 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
Casimir's horse-1d20 - 1 ⇒ (8) - 1 = 7
Fenna's Pony-1d20 + 0 ⇒ (13) + 0 = 13
Malthir's horse-1d20 - 1 ⇒ (16) - 1 = 15
Vaysh' horse-1d20 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0
Fenna's pony remains stubbornly unaffected by the Boggard's scare tactics, and although Malthir's horse is jittery it does not flee.
The other animals are far too bewildered and scared by these strange, beast-like noises however. Vaysh' horse, Casimir's horse and Talia all seem about to ride away from the combat.
Frightened durations-
Vaysh Mount-1d4 ⇒ 1
Casimir Mount-1d4 ⇒ 1
Talia-1d4 ⇒ 2
The horses will bolt on their riders initiative counts. If your first action is a dismount, you have time to get off the horse before it rides off. If you want to stay on your mount, i'll need a DC15 Ride check; the horse's are panicked and galloping off at full speed.
The boggard closest to Casimir launches its tongue at him, wanting to get a hold on its chosen victim before bludgeoning the man with its morningstar... And the tongue strikes true, wrapping around Casimir's ribs...
1d20 - 1 ⇒ (20) - 1 = 19
The boggard with its tongue wrapped around Fenna swings his morningstar at the Gnome's head, seemingly attempting to knock her out rather than kill her. Despite her limited maneuvrability with the tongue clinging to her, Fenna easily dodges the blow.
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Well, over to you guys! Both Casimir and Fenna are tangling with a Boggard's tongue each; see the spoiler for Fenna above for the effects or the tongue Casimir.
Malthir you can specify which square you end up in yes.
I backtracked a little and see that I missed moving you north-east on the map, will correct it next map update :)

Malthir Al' Dagon |

Round 2 action
Malthir slides off his horse while drawing his weapon, seeing his friends in dire straights as a swift action points his sword at the Frog-like creature activating his smite evil Stand judged by Iomedae's sword! and proceeds to attack. He believes they must be in league with the bandits
If evil: The halo of shimmering power surrounds Malthir as he strikes
smite pwr atk 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18 dam 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
AC 21 vs. this creature.
If not: A look of frustration comes over his face... pwr atk 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17 dam 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
I will stay in the hex I am in and smack the horses but as I slid off so it would trot off a few yards...that might draw an AOO on the horse though...

Casimir |

Actions round 1
Cayden's codpiece...what are these creatures?!
Reeling from the crush of the sticky tongue wrapped around his chest and with his ears ringing from the eeiry croaks, Casimir looks about trying to clear his head and assess the situation.
A trained rider, he easily recognizes the frantic snorts and laid back ears of his mount as signs of panic. Time to get on the ground, before this one takes me for a gallop through the thick brush.
Reaching up, Casimir grabs a low-hanging branch with his left hand and hoists himself out of the saddle. As he lets himself drop to the forest floor, his sword hisses out of the scabbard. Move action: Dismount into the square directly to his left and draw Aldori Sword
Turning to face the frog-man who has him entangled, he raises his blade and gives the monster a menacing scowl.
Release me at once, or I will carve that slimy thing from your filthy hole of a mouth!
If the creature fails to understand his words, his expression and stance leaves no doubt about his meaning. Standard action: Intimidate Intimidate roll 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12

Round 1 Redux
Vaysh looks around, surprising herself that she has noticed these strange creatures in the trees before many of her company. Stay your attack and we shall stay ours, she calls out quickly. I do not feel right in attack while I hope for negotiation, mayhaps it is best that I extricate myself from the saddle before I try anything.
Round 2
I do not know if they understood me, but they seem to have no desire to speak with us. Vaysh starts to shift backwards, further away from her aggressor only to discover that her foot is held in the roots of a nearby tree. By Iomedae’s Blade, this is not the turn of luck that I needed. I hope that I have given enough room for this croaker to not pursue me in favor of my stronger companion.
Vaysh keeps her eyes focused on the creature while she begins to let the soft words of her lullaby pass her lips, her hands move in practiced arcane gestures.
Day is done, dusk is here, my dreamer do not fear.
Mayhaps Malthir will buy me enough time.

Thats a shame. Ah well, plenty more spell slots where that came from eh :). Will give Edric a little more time to post his action, else i'll make one on his behalf in 45 mins or so.
Malthir the map looks fine, but your aware that area is quite far to the east of where you are right? Also, the line of hexes above Oleg's is considered fully explored. Basically Restov is east along the road that Oleg's is near, but the line of hexes I can see on the map now don't come into play until Chapter 3. the way your showing the explored/unexplored is fine though :)

Malthir Al' Dagon |

I just thought it was a little strange that we wouldn't know the way to Restov since that is where we came from? Could never figure out why they started the campaign like that. I can remove it if you want and just have the one page map going, we know the charter only allows us to explore the west region of the map. Just let me know. Thx.

Fenna cuts herself free of the tongue wrapped around her.
The Boggard that Malthir smote hisses something in its tongue at Malthir, and attacks him with crazed fury, aiming for a killing blow. The assault is furious but predictable and Malthir easily keeps up his defence against it.
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
The frogman being flanked by Fenna and Edric glances over its shoulder at the armoured knight, looks a little worried and then turns back to Fenna for another blow; this one certainly not merely designed to beat her senseless. The Boggard lifts his morningstar over his head for too long, betraying his intentions to the Gnome; who merely takes a casual and graceful step back to avoid it.
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
The animals break off in a panic with the exception of Fenna's pony and malthir's horse; but the Boggard's don't pay any attention to them. The frogman duelling Casimir swings its blunt weapon two-handed at Casimir's chest. The agile Aldori student is not quick enough to dart aside from the blow, but the chain shirt absorbs the impact of it almost entirely.
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

Vaysh, if you are planning to target them with a sleep, do not target mine, our lady is with me in this fight!
As the frogman overextends in a powerful overhead chop aimed for Malthir's head, he easily side-steps the clumsy attack and cuts down on the back of the frog man's neck, almost removing its head and adds another serious blow to the one accross its mid-section. Malthir is impressed by the amount of punishment these creatures can take providing the one he is fighting is still standing?

Casimir |

Still entangled in the Boggards tongue, chest hurting from the strike of the morning-star, Casimir lashes out with his sword.
Attack roll 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Damage roll 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Vaysh, I'd be more than happy to accept your help over here. Sing him a lullaby.

DM Alexander Kilcoyne |

All three of the Guardian's swordsmen score hits on their opponents. Malthir finds himself impressed by the resilience of his opponent, who is still standing after the last blow, albeit just barely.
Vaysh starts casting her sleep spell, but finds the threat of the Frogman too much for her and is forced to abandon the spell.
Round 3
Fenna's up. Not much has changed positions-wise, but all three Boggard's are now wounded.

Fenna Thistleswade |

Still careful not to lower her guard, Fenna lashes out at her opponent with an obviously exaggerated swing of her arm in an effort to distract the creature from the real threat behind it, but her intentions are all too easily read.
Still fighting defensively, aid Sir Edric's next attack 1d20 + 1 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (8) + 1 + 2 - 4 = 7; failed.

DM Alexander Kilcoyne |

The boggard facing off against Fenna and Edric turns to face the knight, realising from his last painful strike that he is the real threat.
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
The boggard's morningstar clobbers Edric in the knee with great force, but the cavalier's's armour protects his leg from the worst of the blow.
Desperately unable to score a hit on Malthir, the Boggard lashes out at him one last time before crouching and attempting to leap up onto a low hanging branch and escape. Its eyes widen in surprise as Iomeda'es blessing deflects the Boggard's blow at the last possible moment.
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Malthir's AOO
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
Malthir scores a hit on the Boggard as it leaps into the trees but the angle of attack was poor and the blade does not penetrate the Boggard's leather armour. The frogman springs up with a mighty leap, ending ten feet above Malthir.
Same square, but the severely wounded Frogman is not within reach and thus your not in a threatened square.
Meanwhile, Casimir's wounded opponent retaliates, with its tongue still wrapped around the duellist preventing him from easily dodging the blow. Casimir shoves his sword out in a skilled parry, pushing his blades hilt against the incoming morningstar and shoving it back.
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Bah can't roll for toffee :P. Over to you guys...

Casimir |

His spirits heartened by the luck he and his friends are having in battle, Casimir makes another strike at the Boggard, swinging low in an attempt to slice open the frog-man's knee.
Attack roll: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Damage roll: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Sir Edric Orlavsky |

Grimacing from the blow to his knee but still able to move unimpeded, Edric recovers for the thrusting his sword at the beast.

Confirm Critical:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Damage:1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Woot!

DM Alexander Kilcoyne |

Casimir makes his move, but his opponent dodges the strike.
Refusing to let the evildoer get away, Malthir pulls out a javelin and hurls it up into the trees. His aim is true, and his effprts are rewarded when the frogman falls onto the ground with a sickening crunch, a javelin buried in its chest.
1d6 ⇒ 6
Ouch!
Retaliating, Edric plunges his sword deep into the chest of the frogman, straight into the creature's ribcage. Edric pulls his sword out, but the beast remains standing despite the impressive blow.

Sir Edric Orlavsky |

Feeling his blade sink into his foe, a grim smile crosses Edric's face. This is replaced almost immediately by a scowl as he removes his sword and the beast remains standing.
"I would not be so hasty with such brazen speculations Casimir. Do not underestimate these monsters, I have struck this creature twice and it still has some fight left in it."
Seeing Malthir fell one of the beasts, the smile returns to Edric's face,"Well struck Malthir! Now if you would go assist our over confident duelist, this persistent blighter is mine to finish."

Casimir |

Casimir grimaces as the nimble boggard jumps over his low swing. He struggles against the tongue that is still wrapped tight around his chest and does his best to parry another crushing blow from the monster's morningstar.
Aye, Malthir. An extra blade over here would be most welcome.

Vaysh |

Sorry, didn't feel well last night. Got up for a few minutes this morning and decided it just wasn't worth it. Not really sure what is going on and have a few things to do. Will toss a Daze over at Casimir's since last time I saw he was kinda on his own. Will put up a more descriptive post later on.

Malthir looks down at his feat where his blade lies
Which one of your feats would that be, Mal? Power Attack or Weapon Focus? ;-)
Casimir bats the morningstar away with his buckler, and prepares to duck the next swing.
What does it look like I'm doing, Malthir? Asking him to dance?
