Please post with your alias so that we may begin checking characters.
Step One: Concept
Allegiance. (Allegiance is limited to Eldritch Society at this time. If they publish any NEG games I will allow you to make characters in order to play that as well and the games will be run independent of one another)
Profession. Society Sorcerers (Occult Scholars), Society Parapsychics, Tagers, Lorekeepers and Operators. I personally can see some former Soldiers being part of the Eldritch Society as well (The Grunts as to the Tagers Shock Troops).
Defining Characteristics and Names
Step Two: Attributes
35 points amongst Agility, Intellect, Perception, Presence, Strength and Tenacity
Step Three: Skills, Specializations, Qualities.
20 points none above the Adept (3) level at character creation except of Education and the Characters native language.
Free Skills
Languages Expert (Native Language)
Literacy Novice
Regional Knowledge: Novice (Choose Specific)
Feats are half (rounded down) of your attribute rating.
Specializations may be purchased.
Assets cost skill points you may acquire up to 10 flaws as well
Step Four: Secondary Attributes
Actions – average of Agility & Perception. Consult table
on p. 64.
• Movement – average of Agility & Strength. Consult
table on p. 64.
• Orgone – 5 + average of Intellect & Tenacity.
• Reflex – average of Agility, Intellect, & Perception.
• Vitality – 5+ average of Strength & Tenacity.
• Drama Points – 10
Step Five: Outfitting the Character.
You are considered middle class (unless other Qualities have been acquired) and you lead a middle class life and get any reasonable creature comforts associated with the life style. Any special Gear is determined by your profession.
Step Six: Cheats
You have 6 cheat points. Invest wisely.
Step Seven: Making it Real.
Add detail and background, including physical description, personality, motivation, family, and friends.
Axel Black |
Lets try this :
Axel is an ex NEG training officer. He trained recruits in the use of firearms, hand to hand combat and the use of the surroundings to conceal yourself. He is a hard young man. Even with his age he was easily promoted to trainer of the recruits. A few of the young ones didnt like the idea of a half blood training them. The way he did, did not help this fact. He was a hard man. Teaching them in a very physical manor. Which earned him quite the reputation of being a aggressive person who wants people to hate him and the NEG.
In fact, he was just making them face reality. Nothing more or less. The world out there was not pretty. The stories from his mother made it all to real for him. If you knew him well, you would often see him kneel in prayer. Life was hard, but his faith helped him face it.
During the last few months the ES approached him in various ways, talking about things that he did not understand. Eventually they showed him, and he knew what had to be done. The training was hard, harder than anything he thought he knew. That was till the Rite of Sacred union. He thought his head and whole body would explode. Nothing prepared him for it. But he held on, his mind focused, filled with his devotion to Him and he prayed for the entire 3 agonizing days. Finally it settled. He was one. One whos devotion matched his own. Now they were one. The Efreet and himself were now one being.
Axel is a very dark grey, red haired xeno. His mother a Nazzadi, his father a human. He has twin sisters. Identical. They gave him grief all his life. But they are younger and they are family.
His new life has made it hard to spend time with them, but he knows it is needed to protect them from the monsters that dwell under the surface of society.
He still prays every morning and at night. Even if its quietly where it will not attract attention from the enemy. If possible he still attends church. Life has changed him and the things he sees as well. But it did not change his faith and his relationship with his Lord

"Well Hello there everybody, who's ready to party?"
Miss Cartwright comes from wealth, which while mostly diminished over the centuries still leaves her well off. (Wealthy 1).
Have had to recalculate my secondary scores about 4 times through character creation, next time I'll have to remember to ignore them until everything else is done. I didn't realise until last minute that Tager's actually increase your attributes even when not active (though not by as much).
My initial list of skills came to about 40 points, then I had to aggressively cut them down... (then put some back with cheat points).
Regarding Tager movement, I've had to just multiply existing rates for a lot of them, but yay I can fly at 45mph.
Are we allowed more than 2 focus'? the character creation rules seemed to indicate you could only put a single skill point into skill focuses, though if that's not the case I might reshuffle a bit.
Eloise should be able to function as a spy/thief/face if required, I did look at making her an Intelligence Operative originally, but wasn't too sure on the idea, so she's pulled a bit from that.
Sorry, I'm rambling a bit here, just giving thoughts regarding character creation, since I'm not really used to the system/background.
NB: Is there are particular region we're going to be set in or shall I just pick a region for my Regional Knowledge? If it's not based around a particular location I may select London, as I imagine that's where she grew up (mostly in the arcology, but she liked to escape to the streets).
Starting to wish that I'd created the character on a spreadsheet with costings calculated, so I could check all my numbers a bit easier... Kept going back and changing stuff so I'm not 100% sure anymore.
Eloise Cartwright |
Also looking at the roles, I don't mind respeccing a little to work better as an (almost literal) "eyes in the sky"/operator type, though perhaps a little of an unconventional one.
The Whisper comes with an impressive array of sensors and I don't mind keeping out the bulk of combat to be in a more support role.
NB: Eloise likes to let off steam quite aggressively, so while on a mission she may be restrained, on downtime she likes to party. With this being OP I doubt we'll have that much downtime played out, but still...
NB2: Also worth noting that I'm in UK (GMT/BST) don't know how america-centric you all are, but means I may end up posting at odd times compared to you all.

I'll have to reread the section about skill specializations. I will give that to you later today (8-10 hours from the time of this post).
The game is set going through the Cascade mountains via I-90 heading into Seattle. You can be a native or a transplant whatever you wish.
I am posting from EST (I think that's GMT -5)
James Martin RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16, 2011 Top 32 |
I'd like to throw my hat in the ring. I'm thinking a Phantom Tager. Probably human, who flunked out of the Engel project and became briefly a historian/arcane lore sort of fellow. He was picked by the Eldritch Society because of certain unique brain waves that made him more likely to bond with the symbiont. If you'd like, I'll get a character sheet worked up over the weekend.
Leshawanna Carter Jackson |
Leshawanna shivers, and stamps her booted feet on the crumbling asphalt of the closed truck-stop parking lot. Overhead the stars shone with needle-clarity above the Blue Mountains.
She puffed on her cigarillo, and watched the vehicles race past on the interstate.
Dam, but it was too cold in these mountains for a Louisiana girl.
She hoped her contacts would get here soon.
There were only stumps of rusted metal where the pumps once stood, the dark windows of the closed diner were depthless holes of shadow behind her, as she again made a slow circuit of the lot; her hands thrust into the pockets of her voluminous coat.
Eloise Cartwright |
So we look like we're back up to four, with Jackson, 5 if we're waiting for James to sort out over the weekend.
Eloise Cartwright |
Adjusted character slightly, as after spread-sheeting to check calc's I was a skill point down, so yay! an extra point in Surveillance.
Also yet another Avatar picture change, think I'll stick with this one for now.
Leshawanna Carter Jackson |
I noted I have a car as a character possession, but I didn't actually purchase the associated skill! I dunno if this means I perform very rudimentary driving tasks at just my Agility; or perhaps by this time most cars are 'self driving.'
Most definitely though I'm not taking part in any high speed pursuits.
Uhh. We're off to a good start. I don't see that anyone can drive. Wasn't someone planning on playing an ex-Mecha pilot? We need a wheel-man!
Eloise Cartwright |
Dagnabbit, didn't even think about vehicles, could have had a motorbike. Ah well, maybe next time I get a skill point.
Reading through the thread I was starting to think we may have been down to untrained agility rolls!
Axel Black |
I still need to add basic gear... oh well. Will check tonight. At training today

Huh. I seem to remember more dice being involved (as I have said, it's been a very long while since I played) but I'll go with that for now. Observation + Per: 3d10 ...and if I'm remembering right, I get to keep all of those for a total of 32. I was going to ask if Eidetic Memory helps here, but I guess that's not needed. More coming in a bit.
Regarding dice pools.
I used to run exactly the same way...took the stat as a base, and then assembled dice pools from both the skill and the associated attribute. Also used the rule of 7 almost all the time.
My understanding of the rules system is:
Test = Dice+Base.
Base = Value of related attribute.
#Dice= Skill. But result is best of matches, runs, highest die.
For example, make an Observation check.
Let's say J. Smith has Perception of 5 and is an Adept(3) at the skill.
Base=Perception(5).
#Dice=Skill (3)
Test = 2d10 + 5.
Roll 2,6,3.
Test result is best of:
Matches (pairs, triples, etc.)
Runs (3 or more).
High die.
So in this case, the test result was 6(highest of 3)+base(perception 5) = 11.
If he had rolled 2,3,4 (a run/streak) the result would have been 2+3+4+5=14.
If he had rolled 1,4,4 (doubles), the result would have been 4+4+5=13.
If he had rolled 9,3,3 the best result (9>3+3) is 9+5=14.
There is another issue with game mechanics where higher trained even skills have a higher critical failure rate than lower odd skills.
Critical failure:
Student(1)-> 1 on a 1d10 = 10%
Novice(2) = 1 on either one or both 2d10 = 19%.
Adept(3) ~ 2.8%
Expert(4) ~ 5.2%
Imagine getting into a car wreck every week on your way to work. Or shooting yourself in the foot on the firing range 3 times for every clip in your pistol. Personally I even think 10% for a 'trained' skill is too high. Still it can be adjudicated as only during 'stressful' or story-critical situations.
I like the house rule that a player assigns one of his dice as the critical failure die. This cuts the rate down somewhat, at least at the Novice skill level. Not sure how it affects the math (would you need to assign 2 critical failure dice?) if it were applied to Expert level. Or it could be a blanket single die (like the Star Wars wild die mechanic) but than means a flat 10% critical failure every time unless you pad it with 'only applies if the result would have been a failure to begin with.'
Granted Drama Points skews this further...so we could run as is.
Or we could all blame it on the chaotic influence of the Old Ones :)
Eloise Cartwright |
if you need to even make a pilot check every time you drive to work then I think you're doing it wrong. ;-)
I'm largely in favour of bringing out the dice only when your trying to achieve something worthwhile.
Also the examples for Critical fails are fair less than wrecking your car. Generally amounting to taking twice as long (in combat you either lose your defence or lose time again), so rather than wreck your car you miss your turn off and have to detour, and rather than shoot yourself in the foot you jam your weapon.
Sarah Charmichael |
Well, as to needing to make a check for driving right now - this is very much not normal driving conditions. I don't get the feeling the ES has custom-built stunt vehicles with all the tricks to just get blown up in real car chases, and we're pushing these things well past even D-Engine automotive specs. A crit fail probably doesn't total the cars, but they're not going to be really drivable for awhile without the help of a mechanic (blown out tires, overheats, maybe a busted break line from pushing that too hard.) We could probably hypothetically limp them back to town in most cases, but I'm guessing the scenario will have us on a clock.

...
Oh I think that depends on where you live...try driving in my town :)
Yah I'm personally an advocate of rule 7 and only having rolls during story appropriate high tension moments...which this one is. We'll see how it plays out.

Working towards metamorphosis. So yes. Burning property and enemies helps to that goal =^^=
