Taissa Sloane |

Dain GM, I am aware. Thanks. :)
Taissa stands by the wall, not taking the offer of a chair. Daya is standing close by, craning her head and watching the various doors with an intense curiosity.
A series of low screeches are exchanged between Taissa and Daya before the pair go quiet and wait to be greeted by someone of office.
Taissa reflects on the priest and the tall man with the scar, both of whom looked as though they would speak but held back.
Beacon was not as defenceless as it first appeared. In fact, it seemed there were people in town well able to fight, scout and track.
She wondered at what manner of man this Lord Regent was.
To the others, she asked in lowered voice, "Who will speak on the group's behalf when addressing the Regent?" Formal, public speaking was not to her liking. There were others in the group who possessed sweeter, finer manners by far.

Taissa Sloane |

I won't be able to post again until tomorrow afternoon, my time. Going out of town for NYE celebrations. Happy New Year, everyone. :)

Dain GM |

Happy New years eve; gang. I'm hoping you're enjoying things so far. You're right next to the Regent, but the adventure will be starting after the conversation with him. Things are looking good so far, though.
Got to crash, then work, but I'll see you soon.
As the party waits for the regent in the room, the pop and snap of the burning logs seems fairly peaceful and the heat from the fire seems to cause an almost drowsy sense of relaxation.
You notice that there are two men in the far side of the room; two other guards, similar to the ones outside.
With little to do but wait you're able to examine the room a bit better.
You notice that the men in the room seem to have similar features to "Vick", and as he said he was from Cheliax, you suspect that they may also be from that nation as well. Or at least from Korvosa.
They both seem extremely disciplined, unlike the men in the streets that you've seen.
Time passes slowly, but you suspect that very soon you will be meeting this "Lord Regent" soon, and then make your introductions.

Suny |

What has happened before...
Suny thanks Vick enthusiastically for helping move her chest up to her room, making comments such as "Gee..I all'a'ways fergets how heavy things be when they in't floatin'..."
The size and perceived opulence of the room Suny's been given elicit yet more amazement and "Ooo's" and "Ahhh's" as she examines the bed and other furninshings. Once the chest has been put down, Suny rewards Vick with a fierce hug before nodding and offering much thanks for the room's key, them both walking out and Suny scampering back down stairs to join every one else for the wandering about of the town.
As the group wander the streets, Suny skips along seeming intent to look at every thing. All the people the group meets are greeted with a bright smile and often a wave, Suny's bare brown arm appearing from within the folds of her 'cloak' to do so.
Once at the castle, Suny wanders about the room, again uttering many a quiet 'OOoo' and 'Ahhh' at the things she sees.
(^_^)
The sun sets on another day for me as well. Not really able to post for another eight hours or so. Happy New Year every one! (^_^)

Shenkt "Hack" Corchran |

Hack peers around the room, as he takes up a position near to Taissa with his arms crossed and leaning up against the wall.
I am hoping that fancypants Stefan or Asan speak on our behalf. I was never much with words either. I grow to like this Taissa lass more and more. We have much in common.

Stefan Lebeda |

"If you wish, I can talk with the Regent. Although, I am somewhat uncomfortable speaking for any of you as we are just met. If there are any specific needs or requests, perhaps now as we wait would be a good time to discuss them."

Polux |

Polux is not the most diplomatic in the group, though he can handle his own, and he has no qualms in speaking up. But since I won't be posting as often as I would like for the next couple of days, maybe I am not our best option :/ And:
Polux absent mindedly pokes at the logs in the fireplace, as they slowly burn, his eyes staring into the fire. Without turning his head, he comments - "I have no qualms in speaking up, though I have to agree with Stefan over there - we have met about an hour ago, so I don't really think anyone here can speak for anyone else, at least I know I do not expect anyone to speak for me"
Turning to look at the others he adds - "This is not an attempt at an offense, or even distrust, it is simply a fact - we are all here in agreement in coming here, and I am sure we are all the best of people in the world - but no two people are alike, nor their motivations, so if you do not mind, if I have something to ask or add, I will do it myself" - even if a bit cold, his words seem to be aiming at practicality, and nothing else.
"I think all should do the same to be honest, though I have nothing against being introduced by Stefan, so as not to make this meeting a complete chaos" - he finishes, staring again at the fireplace.
Polux is just like that :D

Taissa Sloane |

On my smartphone, connection dodgy. All Taissa meant was one person to say to the Regent "We have come to answer your summons" to reduce repetition and waste time. Taissa is aware they do not know each others needs and wants. Those can be left for one on one's with the Regent. Sorry, thought that would be self evident.

Suny |

Suny blinks, bringing her attention back to the group and their discussion.
"Oh...I dun't mind folks doin a talkin', like." And she lowers her head slightly as colour rises in her cheeks.
"I know me speakin' in'a way of tha' peoples be needin' some whole lot a polish." Suny admits bashfully.

1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Despite the comments that someone would “see you shortly” this does not seem to be an accurate statement.
You have been waiting for nearly an hour before the doors bang open unceremoniously and several figures stride quickly into the room.
At their head is a tall man nearing fifty. His hair is black, but there are streaks of gray around the temples. His face is clean shaven, but a slight amount of stubble is on it, as if it has been a day or so before he has had time to attend to his features. A heavy cloak hangs from his shoulders and an extremely well-made blade is on his hip; not ceremonial, clearly functional it is recognized as an Aldori dueling weapon, though his features are clearly from those of Cheliax.
His eyes are stern and he has a no-nonsense expression that does not brook familiarity or casual conversation. They quickly sweep the room, jumping from each of you rapidly as he strides in with purpose as he catalogs and dockets what he sees at a glance.
Walking next to him is a tall man, roughly six and a half feet in height. Long black hair dangles down his neck and a heavy round shield is slung over his back. A long hafted axe hangs from his belt and his face is bronzed from sunlight. He wears heavy furs over his massive chest and you suspect they are a form of rough armor. His eyes are an ice blue, and he looks like one of the many northerners of the Shoanti tribes. His hand drops almost instinctively to rest on the haft of his axe as he examines you without rancor but a mild curiosity.
Another man follows – he, too looks like a Shoanti tribesman. Not as tall as the first, but older; he moves closer to the younger man protectively at your presence, as if he is a bodyguard or assessing you for a threat. He deliberately drops his hand to his axe as well, and slides it up a bit through the loop on his belt. The motion is not threatening, but it is clear that at any moment he will be able to draw his weapon with great ease.
An elf comes after. The elf’s eyes are gray and his hair is black – you recognize him instantly as someone who has spent time on the sea. He has a long elven blade at his back and two short blades at his sides. A magnificent double-barrelled pistol is also stuck in his belt as well; the woodwork finished with fine silver plating and beautiful scrollwork etched in it.
Another human follows; this one wearing a long traveled stained cloak. He has black hair and a thin narrow mustache and goatee. His skin a fine alabaster and his brown eyes are hard and stern. A musket hangs over his back and a rapier at his side. He has fine riding boots on and a crest on his chest that bears a heraldic device that is from the west; you’d suspect it is from a noble house Knowledge: Nobility will give more info. You notice also that his rapier hangs from a baldric; but that the baldric is a silk sash which is colored with a bright green, very similar to the sashes you have seen before on the bounty hunter guildsmen. All told, he looks like someone who would be a devil if his honor was infringed upon, and there is a calculated coolness in his gaze as he studies you somewhat more obviously than the other men.
The person leading the group pauses before you all and his seeming entourage halts behind him.
His eyes flick between you all quickly.
”Greetings.”
”My name is Caius Lucius Titus; you are here for a legal writ to begin action in this land, with promise of reward for your efforts,” he says, almost rhetorically.
”I will see that my aid attends to these details for you.”
He watches you all for a brief moment.
”Welcome to Beacon; I hope your stay is pleasant and I look forward to the chance to getting to know you all better.”
”May the stars shine upon you,” he adds with a polite voice and nods his head to you all, then with a quick step he strides forward again to a door on the opposite side of the room and moves through it with purpose, the others following him.
The younger of the Shoanti men lingers a moment to stare fairly obviously at the curves of the females, but he does this with an almost matter-of-fact frankness, as if there is nothing unseemly or inappropriate in his actions.
Soon the entire group has exited the room.
After a moment another man enters the room from the same door that the previous party exited from. He has similar features to the Regent, as if they may be natives of the same land; but he is older and a bit heavier around the belly and is not armed.
Instead he wears plain but neat clothes and is carrying a small bag with him.
Laying it out on the table near you, he opens it like a briefcase and withdraws several sheets of paper from within that is covered with writing. He places an inkwell and quill on the table, as well as what looks like a small bronze crest on a heavy back.
Sitting at the table he beckons you all forward.
”Good afternoon, I am Casius Decimus; aid to the Lord Regent. He has charged me with presenting you the proper documentation needed upon arriving here for the purpose of joining our community and doing what you can to aid our people as well as receiving compensation for your efforts.”
He slides over a document for you to examine.
”This paper indicates that the party who signs their name below will be recognized as a formal citizen of the land called Beacon, called The State,” he says, speaking somewhat rapidly, as if he knows this information by rote and has had to give this speech many times before.
”This does not suggest that you are to give up any rights to your own homeland. Instead, it suggests that while you are in the borders of our land we expect you to obey the laws. Further, while in the borders of the State we expect you to aid in the defense of this place should enemies attack.”
”If at any time you do not agree to these terms you are free to leave the borders of the State at no penalty, excepting the violation of a law, in which case – if you are caught, you will be tried like any other.”
”Compensation shall include free rooms at the barracks for a period of one month, or until you are able find suitable housing, after which time you will be treated like a regular tenet.”
”For those who provide proof of successful work at assailing our enemies abroad there shall the offering of rank and title within the limits of the borders of the State.”
”For those interested I will need you to make a mark here,” he says indicating the page ”and an additional copy will be made for your own records,” he says.
Decimus lets out a deep sigh and leans back in the chair.
”Apologies for the formality, but it is necessary to have things documented for my lord. He is an extremely fastidious man when it comes to making sure things are down properly,” he adds.
”All of those particulars are – for now – only the most fundamental of details. It is likely that before you agree to anything formally that things are made clear to you. As such, I am charged with answering any general questions you may have and will do so to the best of my ability.”
He glances between each of you.
”I suspect many of you are hoping for treasure and wealth; unfortunately, we cannot provide much of that – yet.”
”However, there are many men – and women – who have a desire to seek glory, fame, and wealth on their own. Regrettably, such action can be difficult as such caches of treasure are not easily discovered. Also, for some there is the burden conscience. To kill men for their gold does not sit well with many people. Finally, if you succeed in defeating a threat and seizing their wealth, where will you spend it? For you will be marked as a bandit or rogue and likely towns will bar their doors to you outright, if they have the strength, and if they do not, it is likely they do not have the resources to be attractive to you.”
He makes a face; his expression a strange combination of annoyance at such vulgar actions mixed with genuine understanding of the need to take such paths.
”Here we can eliminate all of these issues. We can provide you with the locations of targets with ample wealth. You can rest easy knowing that if you defeat such threats you will be treated as a hero, rather than a villain. And if you return to this place we will treat you as men of respect, of honor, rather than thugs or cutthroats.”
He watches you all.
”I have more details to share – and more information as well; but for now I will hold that for any who are interested in formally working in this land. But I understand you may wish to ask questions first before you commit yourself to this course. If so, please ask me – I shall do my best to answer all of you,” he says politely.
Right, so – formally getting the writ allows you the first set of clues to begin the path to achieving power in this place. It’s more of a technicality, but once you have the document you’ll start getting some information. If there are any specific questions you have for this guy – toss them up. I’ll answer all of them as best as I can. Then we start the adventure!

Shenkt "Hack" Corchran |

Hack steps forward without questions.
This is exactly what I was looking for. A stable and legitimate means to raid those that The State feels deserve it.
He places his mark on the document without reading it.
Point me where the most killin' needs to be done for The State.

Dain GM |

He places his mark on the document without reading it.
Point me where the most killin' needs to be done for The State.
Casius looks up in surprise at the action, but pleased.
"Begging your pardon, sir - I do not know what type of man you are, but I admire your enthusiasm," he says with a sincere tone.
Offering you second sheet, he has you make the same mark again, then he quickly presses the seal in ink and stamps both sheets formally, handing you back your own copy.
"In good time I shall give you the full details, rest assured, sir," he says in a reserved but polite voice, but the pleased expression is still on his face.
"For now, I shall await your companions. They may wish to have specifics answered before continuing. When all have agreed on the terms than I shall enlarge on those details, sir," he says with a much more friendly attitude.

Taissa Sloane |

Daya stood to the side of Taissa, watching the people come in, noting their features to memory. She gave one low, sharp peal, but then settled upon Taissa's swift look.
Taissa also took note of each of the powerful male leaders residing in Beacon, especially the one who led the Bounty Hunter Guild. She stared back at all with frank, undaunted eyes, taking their initial measure. The younger Shoanti with his lingering inspection did not anger her -- she stood meeting his gaze, her copper brow arched in response.
When the Regent's aide, Casius Decimus, spoke of signing a legal writ to live and work among them in Beacon, Taissa raised her question calmly, not hurriedly moving to sign the parchment. "You spoke of the laws of Beacon and obeying them. What are these laws?"

Dain GM |

"You spoke of the laws of Beacon and obeying them. What are these laws?"
Cassius looks back at Taissa and nods.
”A valid question,” he says with a nod.
”They are, I should think, fairly standard.”
”There is to be no theft, murder, rape, arson or the violation of contracts.”
”There is to be no worship of dark gods, nor is there to be practice of black magic.”
”Any alteration between individuals in which property is damaged must be paid for.”
”Slavery is not tolerated, but we will permit the existence of indentured servitude for no more than three years.”
”Any wrongdoing that is done must be paid for with reparation. If wrongdoing cannot be undone, than there must be a payment of blood – in other words; death.”
”So, for example – should a person elect to steal your property, they must either return the property, pay for the property, or be hanged, or they can elect to work off the debt.”
”Physical violence shall generally be overlooked provided the parties do not wish to press charges. If they do – the penalty shall not exceed the cost to heal the damage.”
”In short – the penalty shall fit the crime, and shall not exceed the damage done,” he says with a shrug.
”Nothing too unusual or unique, I’d think – except for a desire to ban slavery; black magic and dark gods. Other than that, I think we are not much different than most enlightened legal systems,” he says with a shrug.
Pretty much your basic legal system. Nothing too different except for the nuances regarding dark arts; dark gods (re: Evil Gods) or slavery – an interesting point as many people from Cheliax worship demon lords and are slavers. Clearly both Cassius and his lord are both from Cheliax, and so is “Vick”, yet they all seem comfortable with these laws and decisions to ban slavery and ban the worship of demons or dark gods.

Stefan Lebeda |

Very fair indeed, sir. In fact, considering the obvious Chelish background of the Regent and others here, I find it surprising that there is a deliberate prohibition about "dark gods". By that I take it that the Lord Regent is not enamored with the current ruling faction of Cheliax?"Stefan makes it obvious that he is in complete agreement about the "no dark gods" rule.
Stefan bows deeply to the Regent's aide.
"Stefan Lebeda, estranged son of House Lebeda of Brevoy at your service." Stefan stands from his bow and sweeps his cloak behind his shoulder, the silvery glint of fine chain revealed momentarily as he does.
"While wealth is fine, I find the promise of lands and titles to be of much more value. A place to set down roots and establish a House of my own is extremely appealing. Place down whatever documents are necessary and I will gladly pledge my sword to the defense of Beacon, a more welcoming place than my old House."
Hah! Ninja'ed! Didn't see the OOC part until after my post :)

Dain GM |

In fact, considering the obvious Chelish background of the Regent and others here, I find it surprising that there is a deliberate prohibition about "dark gods". By that I take it that the Lord Regent is not enamored with the current ruling faction of Cheliax?"
"Yes..." Cassius says dryly about the "obvious Chelish Background", not entirely sure what you meant.
With no real knowledge of how Paizo comes up with any of their names, I decided to give Cheliax names a more "Roman" feel; Cassius, Caius, and of course Victor "Vick" Longinius - that's kind of the trick to guessing where they come from. I hope it helps for the future :)
He studies you carefully, then shrugs, guessing you meant no offense.
"I feel that all men of quality honor freedom; so does my lord," he says after a moment.
"You seem to be a such a man; I suspect that you, too, prefer freedom and honor liberty," he adds.
"While the lords of Cheliax have some form of honor and a rigid code that they live by, there are many who recognize that placing oneself under the dominion of dark gods, demons, and the tolerance of slavery... such decisions are beneath contempt."
"There has been civil unrest in my homeland for decades - factions dedicated to the liberation of those who have been held in bondage persist in secret. They have lost their lands, titles, fortunes and houses in the name of..." he breaks off after a moment, clearly agitated by some troubled memory, then takes a deep breath and composes himself.
"Apologies - I did not mean to speak at length," he says with a brief nod.
He brightens at your mention of land.
"My lord shall be pleased with your desire for land," he says with a smile.
"Even now the city is swelling quickly and the citizens are becoming overcrowded."
"Surely you saw the east of the town? The small houses and cabins that are growing outside the walls are only built so close to the wall for safety. But it is not comfortable living, the citizens need space to grow, but it is also no secret that our folk need to have protection if they wish to live farther then the very walls of the city."
He eyes you thoughtfully.
"Having a protector outside the walls to be able to provide stability for citizens in time - this could be very helpful," he says politely.
"Though that may not be to your taste, perhaps? Yet we shall see."
He considers what your first duties shall be, then he offers his thoughts on the matter.
"I think that for now my lord is less interested in sending more forays into the wild; those enemy camps that you may raid will be especially defended in the winter months. Even a company of outriders attacking such a place would do little, for the will be entrenched and well defended from our best men."
He quickly stamps your papers and hands the copy of your document back to you and retains the other for his lord.
"With few pirates in the shipping lanes and only a few minor threats at sea this time, I suspect that my lord will have you begin to patrol the coast either with a ship or long trek down the beachhead to various points of note on land until he gauges your skill, so that you are not matched against foes that are beyond your abilities - with all respect, of course," he says with a nod.
He strokes his chin, thinking a moment.
"I do not know for sure what you shall be assigned to, sir. Once the skills of you and your comrades are assessed, we shall be better equipped to prepare your orders, of course," he says politely.
Then he looks at the others, curious to know what - if anything - they would ask of him.

Taissa Sloane |

Taissa nodded her head upon Casius' description of Beacon's laws.
She then listened to the aide's response to Stefan.
And then once more she asked a question. "Would your lord or any of his liegemen have issue with my avian companion's presence? I ask for many reasons. She is a natural hunter and will seek food. She will not raid any of your farms and will search unclaimed places and higher ground for quarry. She will only attack people if she must defend herself or those she is loyal to. This will not break any of your laws?"

Dain GM |

"Would your lord or any of his liegemen have issue with my avian companion's presence? I ask for many reasons. She is a natural hunter and will seek food. She will not raid any of your farms and will search unclaimed places and higher ground for quarry. She will only attack people if she must defend herself or those she is loyal to. This will not break any of your laws?"
Cassius thinks a moment.
"This is a delicate matter. Typically such a beast would be considered to be as a pet. You should know that if a pet caused damage to a person or property that the owner is held responsible."
He taps his finger against the desk, frowning a bit.
"In this case it seems that Daya possesses more intelligence than many animals do."
"If she does not cause harm to our citizens, there should be no issue," he says with a friendly nod.
"But..." he says after a pause "if she does harm our citizens... I suppose she must be judged with the same provisions under our law..." he adds, clearly unsure himself how to proceed.
Then he shakes his head.
"I know it seems contrary to the very concepts that were discussed; specifically matters of honor and freedom, but our laws are clear on what would happen if someone were to harm your pet, or what would happen if your pet harmed another. I know that she may not feel that "pet" is a fair term, but - until we can come up with another more appropriate term - that will be how she shall be classified," he says.
"I hope this does not offend you or her," he says politely "but it is the best we can do at this time."
Suffice to say, there will be no "legal judgement" against Daya unless she attacks someone or something without provocation. If she is provoked and retaliates, that is another matter; but that will be something that will have to be dealt with on a case by case basis later.

Taissa Sloane |

Taissa inwardly cringed. Pet?! Do they see a strap or rope to lead her with? Taissa looked over at Daya and wondered how she would react once she learnt the meaning of pet.
Had it been different circumstances, Taissa would have scolded the man for his narrow mind, yet he had said he meant no offence. Taissa sighed softly. City people.
This was one of the many reasons why Taissa preferred living in the woods or free, open places. She did not have the stomach for man-made laws -- Nature could not be owned. It was gifted by the Spirits.
"Your laws are your own. Upon your lands, you have my word that Daya will not attack and harm without provocation. In your writ, Daya shall be named companion, not pet. Is this acceptable to you and your lord?" Taissa did not want to reveal Daya's intelligence or wisdom to these Regent's men. She did not trust them as yet.
"And wealth is relative. A poor man can consider himself rich and a rich man poor for all he lacks. I, and Daya, are here to aid in justice and protection. We are no fortune-hunters and we call no place home. Yet, a place to set down roots is something to consider for later days, by the Spirits' blessing."
Then a brief exchange of screeches ensued between Taissa and Daya.
Taissa then tentatively moved toward the aide's desk. She picked up the quill, dipped it in the inkwell and set her mark to the parchment, sealing her and Daya's fate with the others. She hoped she would not live to regret it.

Suny |

Suny spends the growing hour in the Lord's chambers by slowly wandering all over the room. Even, and up to , the pair of men at arms who seem to have been assigned to make sure the silver ware remains in its display case.
While she will greet them with a cheerful 'Hey-ya' should no response be forthcoming she'll preoccupy herself with examining their clothes....seeming to find something fascinating about their buttons and buckles...Though, having learned from Daya, touching strange creatures with out their permission is obviously a faux-pass in this society and hence she will keep herself safely covered in her blanket.
When the Lord and his entourage arrive, Suny will watch them with interest, though her large blue eyes will seem to have the greatest focus upon the Elf in their midst. Her gaze never straying from the fellow. Once they leave and the aid arrives and introduces himself Suny will step forwards, though the others more correct and formal introductions will curb her usual greeting.
Upon being asked about the information that Casius Decimus has supplied Suny will quietly await a gap in the discussions, or her turn at the ink and paper to give voice to her own thoughts.
"Um..here...when ye said 'The Law of th' land'...I gots a question about 'em." She says.
"Whut if'n some one were ta find one...or maybe two...of yer laws were...um...all 'squicky' like? Fer their tasties an' were ta' be haivin' trouble keepin' on'a proper side of 'em? Or, perhapse, they mght be somat like that place whut were mentioned...um.. 'Jelly-ax'?" Suny stumbles over the foreign land.
"Laws whut folks might find right acceptable from where they be comin' from...but might be seen different by different folks whut they's now comin' in't meetin'?"
"I mean...ye've probably been putin' a right lot of thinkin' in't whut t'is ye be wantin' people ta' be doin' right by one 'nother...but ye cain't be coverin' every thing, surely?" She asks.
"An' then ye've got folks who be different..." And here, she gives a nod to Daya and thence to Taissa.
"I mean...whut if some one who were havin' a better grip on yer laws were to do somat....squicky?" Suny asks,
"Like purloinin' one of Daya's fine pieces of plumage. Committin' some act whut might get people ta' thinkin' tha' wrong thing an' leadin' 'em ta' be thinking tha' completely wrong thing about said fine lass?" Suny asks quite earnestly, though possibly coming across as a slight ramble, given her current limitations with the local language.
She awaits Casius reply with he usual open and honest smile. (^_^)

Shenkt "Hack" Corchran |

Hack watches with interest as both Taissa and Stefan sign on the dotted line.
Hmmm...I feel much the same way about these "laws' and The State as does Taissa, but they are a means to an end. The lands and title that Stefan seeks is also my desire, but for purely selfish reasons.
Sounds like my raidin' skills, both on land and from the longboat, will come in handy.

Dain GM |

"Your laws are your own. Upon your lands, you have my word that Daya will not attack and harm without provocation. In your writ, Daya shall be named companion, not pet. Is this acceptable to you and your lord?"
Cassius strokes his chin thoughtfully, then his eyes light up.
”Say rather than “companion” we shall amend it say “ward”,” he says quickly and makes the note.
Glancing up, he explains.
”In our lands a “ward” is a person who cannot legally enter into a contract, but is not blood relation to the person signing the document; and so they must have a proxy sign for them. This proxy, or guardian, is legally responsible for the actions of their ward as a mother would be for their under-age child. There is precedent for that. Is that acceptable to you?” he says, watching Taissa.
Taissa can see that this is all merely a matter of legal jargon. So long as Daya does not attack folk or damage their property, it is likely that there will be no trouble at all. It seems that Cassius is stuck with matters of formality and is merely going through motions for matters of form.
Given that his lord is a strict man of honor, it seems that following form and procedure is something he must comply with, no matter what his personal feelings on the matter are.
As this is done, the elf suddenly speaks up.
"...whut if some one who were havin' a better grip on yer laws were to do somat....squicky?"
"Like purloinin' one of Daya's fine pieces of plumage. Committin' some act whut might get people ta' thinkin' tha' wrong thing an' leadin' 'em ta' be thinking tha' completely wrong thing about said fine lass?"
Cassius takes a deep breath, composing his thoughts on how to answer this question best.
”As stated by your own companions – our laws are our own,” he says slowly.
”I am not entirely clear on your meaning,” he adds patiently ”but it seems to me that you are suggesting that if you were to commit a crime unintentionally – what would be the result?”
He taps his fingers slowly on the desk.
”It is said in the court of my homeland – Ignorance of the law is no excuse – else every man would claim ignorance when they committed a crime and so be guiltless.”
”Here we follow that same code; for the same basic reason.”
”If you observed a bauble that you found to be appealing, and decided to take it, you may have merely found a lovely shell on the beach, or it may in fact be the heirloom of a wealthy lady – who can say?”
”But, having taken the item, if you took the item – if another person had claim on it and asked for it back, both common decency and the law would suggest that you return it without protest, as it was not yours.”
He leans back and examines the elf in front of him with somewhat flat eyes, appraising her carefully.
”So long as there is no permanent harm done, there is no real issue. In this land our punishment is essentially to redress an issue. If you steal something, you must repay it in full. If destroy something, you must rebuild it or pay to have it rebuilt. If you cannot – then you would suffer the consequences.”
”In short, it is better not to steal,” he says pointedly.
He glances at the other in the group; those who have remained mute at this time.
”I do not mean to alarm any of you with all of this talk on laws and formality. In truth; this place is not so burdened with such things as you may think from my words.”
”My lord is a man of honor and principle; he does not wish to see people that would remain here for more than a season held accountable for tasks and deeds without having their consent.”
He gestures to the papers.
”In short, most of these things are to ease his mind on matters pursuant to slavery and the dominion of dark masters. In this way he feels comfortable knowing that any who come to this place do so of their own free will and any found wanting and in need of justice will not be surprised if punishment is meted out for wrongdoing.”
He looks at all with a somewhat sheepish glance.
”He does not love tyrants and does not wish any to be under the heel of another. That is the thrust of these proceedings – to ensure you are here out of free will and through your own choice; that is all.”
He snorts after a moment.
”In truth I have seen many crimes while I have served here; some are brought to attention of the courts to be dealt with – many are dealt with in a more… personal way,” he says shaking his head.
”We try to discourage folk from taking the law into their own hands, but it is not easy. There are many duties that we must perform and we do not always have the resources to deal with every offense."
He sighs.
”We do what we can to make this a civilized place where goodly folk can feel at peace and safe. But despite all of these laws and legal talk... well, this town can still be a bit rough.”
He glances at all of you.
”I offer you that advice for caution. Be on your guard, there are many dangers in the world, and we do not call for those to aid this town because it is a bastion of security.”
He glances back to the blonde elf.
”I hope that answers your questions. Are you then resolved to agree to these terms, or do you yet have more questions?” he says, waiting for her answer.

Geser |

Geser has checked into the inn and taken one of the smallest rooms. He's left the main share of his equipment behind and taken to the streets toward the keep. He is a Half-Orc, dressed in drab brown pants and shirt, with an earth-toned, striped serape that concealed his weaponry. He wears nothing on his head, his nature exposed.
Geser strode forward with a purpose, but he seemed braced for something, as though he anticipated that others might feel ill at ease in the presence of a Half-Orc. He wasn't guarded in a sense that he was ready to throw a man to the ground if that man attacked him; rather, he seemed braced to absorb pain. He relaxed only slightly at the sight of another Half-Orc, especially one dressed in a sash that might have served as some sort of uniform and/or marking of rank. The way the fellow reclined easily with his comrades made Geser wonder if he was paying his debt to society in his current position.
Geser continued into the keep and sought someone who might direct him to the Lord Regent or a suitable representative.
I'm still working up my stats, but that'll be done by today, no doubt. Then a better description should be forthcoming.

Geser |

Geser had mused on the nature of the town as he'd gotten his room and board arranged and then headed for the keep. He had initially thought, reflecting upon the name of the town and the nature of the offer he had come to answer, that Beacon was a naive place. The innocent-sounding name, the invitation for fortune-seekers to come and defend it...yet, when he passed the barracks and saw the men at work, he felt differently. Nonetheless, they were vulnerable, and they could very well have need of him.

Dain GM |

Geser continued into the keep and sought someone who might direct him to the Lord Regent or a suitable representative.
As you make your way through the town you are easily able to recognize the keep.
The largest building in town limits, it rests on the northwest side of the town.
The southern part of the town is close to wetlands and then the sea. And the eastern part is the coast itself; clearly the keep is designed to protect against raiders or assaults that may happen from the north and west.
As you wander through the town most folk do not seem to give your presence much of a glance. They go about their business as if you are another traveler; so long as you do nothing aggressive or threatening, they don’t seem to mind.
Arriving at the keep you see that is guarded by two men with muskets at the doorway. They are both wearing mismatched armor; but over the armor is a blue tabard with the heraldry of the town stitched on the front as if it was a formal uniform.
Stating your business, you are allowed to enter.
You move through the doors to a large room which is in no way the full size of the keep. This is clearly a greeting room or conference chamber. You see a cluster of unusual individuals gathered around an older gentleman sitting at table with a spread of documents and papers.
As you listen, it seems he is giving out the particulars for those who wish to be part of the community and help the citizens. He wishes those who to enlist with the town to agree to obey the law and protect the town from any enemy threats. Those who do are welcome to join the place and company.
Some have a few questions, however, and they are still getting things spoken over even as you enter.
The man looks up at you as you enter.
”Greetings, sir,” he says in a brisk but polite voice.
”I am Cassius Decimus; aid to the Lord Regent of this land,” he adds quickly.
”I assume you are here to enlist in the aid of this town and enjoy the benefits it provides?”
”If so, who are you – what is your name? And if not, what is your business?” he asks politely.

Dain GM |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

As Cassius waits for answers he elaborates on the needs of the community right now, given that most of the barbarian raiders are holed up in their respective lairs and well defended from attack during the winter.
He continues to suggest that there are fewer threats on the sea at this time; but someone committed to providing service for the community will likely find enough action for themselves until they learn the lay of the land.
Then, when the snows melt and the rivers flood a bit and Spring comes, the skills and study of the surrounding land and culture will prove to be invaluable when the true raids start in earnest.
Sounds like my raidin' skills, both on land and from the longboat, will come in handy.
Cassius glances at Hack and smiles pleasantly.
”Aye, indeed,” he says.
”You will find small coves that are routinely flushed of interlopers. Occasional bandit chiefs or the random pirate who seeks to build a small lair near our own waters and hopes to attack and slip away without notice – these places have new inhabitants every few months.”
”We suspect that folk from Riddleport are seeking to create several small hidden base camps around our own borders so that – when the Spring comes – they may strike at once from various points.”
”A full armada from Riddleport can be marked and watched; but say they launch ten or twelve capital ships from that harbor and we send all of our defenses into the sea against them, but at the same time small frigates slip their mooring from hidden places up and down the coast as well?”
He shakes his head.
”We do not have the ships to patrol the entire coast; and if they congregate too closely to our city they could lay waste to it with artillery from the sea…. We would need to stop them before they get close, but where would we send our forces?” he says lifting his hands helplessly.
”Therefore, I suspect your first duty will be to work the shipping lanes.”
He looks at Hack curiously.
”You are skilled at sailing, I take it? You know how to handle yourself on the water? I hope so, sir.”
”Such skills will be valuable to most captains; though, to be fair, others may not care at your skill as a sailor, so long as you are good with a weapon and are prepared to make raids on enemy threats,” he adds.
He glances at the others.
”Most of you have agreed to the terms. For those that are content, it is good. If more questions need to be answered first, please let me know, and I shall do the best that I can,’ he says politely.

Jhim |
Geser bows deeply to the Lord Regent, and absorbs the information provided so that he knows what he's getting into. He does not have great need for luxurious rewards, but he does look forward to the opportunity to do some good.
"I am Geser. Thank you for your friendly greeting, Lord Regent- you honor me. I am indeed here to offer my services in defense of your town. I have worked as a bounty hunter until recently, when my leads all but dried up on account of the Guild. There are some bounties I cannot take in good conscience, and so I do not favor the Guild; thus the Guild does not favor me. I am not one to shirk responsibilities, and if I find this work distasteful, I will carry it out at least until the termination of my contract."
Geser keeps his eyes slightly downcast from the Lord Regent's own, not shyly, but out of respect. He takes in the others assembled in the room almost apologetically when he is finished speaking, as though he is not worthy to be among such folk.

Geser keeps his eyes slightly downcast from the Lord Regent's own, not shyly, but out of respect. He takes in the others assembled in the room almost apologetically when he is finished speaking, as though he is not worthy to be among such folk.
Cassius nods at Geser.
"Of course," he says with a quick nod.
"I have a document here for you examination and signature, if you agree with the terms."
"The terms - simply put - are that you promise to obey the laws of the land and defend the land from any foreign threat."
"The "law of the land" is fairly common among most civilized nations; but there are variances that require no worship of dark gods; no communion or service with demons or devils, and the prohibition of slaves."
"My lord is against slavery and seeks only those who - having seen these terms - are willing to enlist of their own free will."
This is actually the Lord Regent's aid - he handles most of the paperwork and other mundane duties of the Regent.
"As for specific contracts once you enlisted? Well, if you were to aid the town as a carpenter, we would not protest as we could use skilled carpenters. If you wish to aid in a task more suited to your... talents? Than the terms of that contract would be between you and the party that has you join."
"In other words, the goodly folk before you wish to aid the town - it would be best and easiest for them to do this on the sea. Yet if I am correct in my hunch, none of them have a ship?" he says looking at the others, then continues.
"That said, they will need to find a captain who will accept their services. It is likely they can find one at the docks, though at this time I do not know if any have put into port," he adds.
"The terms of that contract - if they take it - will be between them and the respective captain."
"For now my lord is concerned only that you enlist in the aid of our town of your own free will and promise to obey the law and protect it in times of need."
"If you have any other questions before you agree - please let me know and I shall do my best to answer them," he adds.
Okay gang, I'm off to work. I'll see you all when I get back. Meanwhile, happy New Year!

Stefan Lebeda |

After signing Stefan steps back and appraises his new companions. Hack and Polux looked to be competent fighters by the look of there stances and equipment.
Stefan smiled inwardly to himself I wonder what they think of my skill, I present a more pampered look to them I suppose. Well, after our first fight it will be amusing to see their expressions.
He was unsure of Taissa's exact skill set, but he was sure she would invaluable in the wilderness. Besides, she was definitely easy on the eyes and that would be a welcome difference.
The young elf, Suny, was also a question. He hoped she would have the focus needed later, but you never knew what talents may be hidden by such a façade.
Asan was a complete cypher though. Stefan would have to see what he could learn in the upcoming days.
Stefan looked about at the group and smiled heartily.
"Well! It looks like we will be working together for a while. I would not be adverse to gathering at the tavern and trading some tales about ourselves so we might get better acquainted. The first rounds on me!"

Geser |

"I see no reason not to sign your papers."
Geser signs off and then notes that Stefan did not take him in when he addressed the group; he lingers with everyone, not certain as to whether or not he is invited to join.
My apologies, everyone. Still have to remind myself to post as Geser and not as Jhim!

Suny |

Suny adjusts things so that she can sit at the table. Arranges the papers and sets the ink well carefully before lifting the quill and placing her flowing, curved signature upon the papers where indicated. The elegant whorls and swirls of the Elvan/Syndaran language flourishing the paper.
She stands and smiles at Cassius, "I am thinkin' we have come to an accord." She says before drifting over and joining every one else.
To 'Hack' she turns, "So...ye be a tad enamored of tha' sea as well, hey?" She asks quietly. (^_^)

Shenkt "Hack" Corchran |

Suny, I spent my early days as a longboat raider of soft Southerners with my northern shieldbrothers. I get by fine in a boat, lassie, but I'd not be callin' myself enamored.

Dain GM |

Cassius smiles at the most recent additions and hands out the proper paperwork for all, so that they have a copy for their own records.
"Well, I am pleased to welcome you all here," he says politely.
"This voucher will extend free room at the barracks for one month - as promised - though you will, of course, need to provide your own meals until you get settled."
Hearing the news about the inn, he smiles.
"That is good. Master Longinius is a good man and his establishment is well respected," he says.
"If you have rooms there already, I suspect that you will find them more comfortable than the barracks by far."
"Also, now you have the legal right to pursue business ventures in the township without issue."
"If you have a ship, I recommend reporting to the harbor master; he will provide you with a more detailed map of the sea."
"Failing that, I would recommend finding yourself a berth," he adds.
"There are not any captains in town that I know of, but tomorrow may bring new opportunities," he says pleasantly.
"For now, it seems like the best idea is to retire to the inn and make yourself comfortable."
A bell chimes from behind one of the doors and he raises an eyebrow.
"Ah - it is now six o'clock. Time for a good dinner, I suspect."
"It was a pleasure meeting all of you. Good luck with your business ventures," he says, standing and bowing to the group.
Okay - so for now everyone but Asan has checked in via expressing interest in getting started. I'm assuming he's AFK, but will be interested when he gets a chance.
Asan, if you're still on board, just assume that you have the proper paperwork and are back at the inn doing social RP with the new guy. If not, please let me know.
Meanwhile, as you've just picked up a new player, tap over to the inn, it will be roughly 6:15 when you arrive and just do some social RP there until I get things going for the next installment a bit later tonight. For RP purposes, dinner will be served and the inn will start getting crowded as more people come there at nighttime to at least get a few drinks after work.
And as always; good hunting!

Suny |

Suny spends the time as the group walks back to the Inn talking with every one. Apologizing for using Taissa and Daya as her examples when she was talking to Cassius . Chatting with Shenkt a little about boats and such.

Taissa Sloane |

A little retcon to finish this off.
”Say rather than “companion” we shall amend it say “ward”,” he says quickly and makes the note.
... Is that acceptable to you?” he says, watching Taissa.
"It is acceptable." These humans and their need for proper categories and groupings. They can't just accept what is.
"Cassius, all Suny is saying is what if someone stole a feather or two from Daya, committed an illegal act and left the feathers in the area making it seem as though Daya was the perpetrator? It's not unreasonable. I would hope your people would investigate thoroughly and not presume guilt based on mere feathers."

Taissa Sloane |

A little more retcon. Sorry, that's what happens with such differing time zones. :)
Taissa noted the presence of the newcomer - a half-orc male. She was not one to hold the orc side of his ancestry against him. She would judge him on his acts alone.
Daya's eyes were already on him, viewing Geser with interest.
Taissa nodded toward the half-orc. She watched as he too signed the writ, melding his fate with theirs.
When the formalities were over, Taissa moved to leave the chamber and in her low, husky voice spoke to Geser, "I am Taissa. Join us at the inn."

Taissa Sloane |

"Well! It looks like we will be working together for a while. I would not be adverse to gathering at the tavern and trading some tales about ourselves so we might get better acquainted. The first rounds on me!"
He is born of wealth. Otherwise he wouldn't be quick to toss his coin about. Or he doesn't fear the days beyond this one.
Taissa critically examined the fine Stefan and his mannerisms. He was not corrupt from what she could see, but it would be good to know more about him and the others in the group.
She pondered Suny's words, 'folks who were different', and the look Suny turned on Daya and herself. Aye, we may not be mannered folk from the city. But, are we so different? Taissa left her thoughts unvoiced, hoping the Elf's comment was not born from bigotry but concern for Daya and herself.
So, she walked beside the others back to Vick's inn. Taissa would have preferred to explore more of the town but their business with the Regent had taken overly long. The bell had chimed for 6. It would not do to wander the town in the dark of the night. She was sure they had eyes on them.
To Suny, she did impart, "You have my gratitude for standing up for Daya with the aide."
Daya gave a low peal of her own. The Roc had not taken to the air since entering Beacon, although she would have enjoyed the freedom of flight. Taissa was worried about the folk who lived in Beacon and how they would react. If they shot at Daya, then she would have to shoot at them.

Suny |

To Suny, she did impart, "You have my gratitude for standing up for Daya with the aide."
Daya gave a low peal of her own.
Suny grins and smiles at Taissa's words and Daya's expression, though the Elven lass still blushes slightly,
"Aye, an' agin' sorry I am fer kind'a sayin' things an' hooken' me words on't ye self and Daya." Suny shakes her head.
"I is got'a be learnin' tha' speakin' of tha' peoples better. There be things I be thinkin' whut I has no words fer sayin'." She sighs, even as she smiles at Daya,
"I bet Daya understands me'selfs feelin's. Havin' ideas whut be hard ta share with others they find they selfs surrounded by..." She shakes her blond mop of hair as the group continues towards the tavern. (Or reaches said tavern and continues to talk)
"So...whut did people be thinkin;' about tha' feller wearin' tha' green belt who were walkin' with tha' Lord and such?" Suny asks.

Dain GM |

Cassius glances between Taisa and the blonde elf.
"I assure you, when it comes to actual court hearings the amount of precision you see before you is merely a prelude to what would happen in such a case. My lord is very thorough when it come to legal work - as I said, his determination to make sure that none are put in unfair bondage or having their freedom taken... this translates especially to legal matters."
"He would see no man put in bondage if they did not deserve it. If your companions was framed for a crime... he is extremely thorough in such things. I can assure you of that," he says offering you the duplicate forms.
You suddenly have no doubt that the man who is prepared to go through so many technical details via paperwork would not tolerate sloppy investigation in a court.
There may be many issues that could endure in this land; but being framed for a crime seems the least likely of possibilities with Caius Titus as the acting Lord Regent.
As the group continues to walk to the inn they notice it is already dark and there are a few torches lit on the streets for light.
A loud and homey noise comes from the inn as you make your way there, and underneath it all is the sound of the surf in the distance.
Soon you arrive at the inn; and despite the fact that things seem to be moving rather quickly, you feel as if there is plenty of time to continue to talk - after all, nothing has happened so far.
Yet...
Meanwhile, as you enter the inn you notice a large amount of folk have gathered. The place is bustling and it seems that Vick has extra help to work the night shift.
Most of the people there are at the bar, but you are all able to find a table to gather around to talk.
Vick greets you politely, but he is moving quickly from place to place and barely has time to talk for more than a few moments. However, he brings out a hearty dinner of roast venison, more fishermen stew; fresh bread, roasted potatoes, string beans, apple pie, cider, dumplings, fresh cheese, honey and cream and cold beer and hot coffee.
As you are able to eat and get comfortable you notice that most of the people there seem to be a bit evasive around you; you suspect they are taking stock of you before approaching.
However, two individuals catch your eye because they continue to watch you more than the others over the rims of their mugs. One is a human with a large gray coat, the collar rolled up around his neck from the cold. The other is a half-elf; he is wearing a black cloak with the hood pushed back over his head so his features are visible.
They seem to be arguing about something. The half-elf is far more patient than the human, the human seeming more animated and intense.
The human continues to nod in your direction, while the half-elf occasionally looks at you; and keeps shaking his head as is protesting the human’s words even as the human seems to be more enthusiastic.
This debate continues even as you continue to casually sit and chat with each other.

Asan Kapoor |

sorry for the late reply everyone, I'll try to be more prompt in the future.RETC: this will have taken place before the group left the Regent's
While the others asked their questions and presented themselves, Asan took a few steps back from the group and folded his hands behind his back.
So here it is. A contract. Denfenders and protectors for a new and growing settlement. Laws to uphold, dangers to watch for. Is this truly what you want? Is this truly what She wants for you. When your revelation came, and you were directed here, was this what you expected? No. Somehow I thought it would be more...enlightening. You must know that there is work to be done before any answers will come. Always one step at a time. Keep your lips curled over your teeth. The monster must be tamed.
Waiting for an appropriate time to speak up, Asan watches with interest each member makes their mark. Then, clearing his throat, he takes several steps forward.
"We are all under the yoke of some dark master. To make a place where that yoke can be thrown off, this is truly something worth pursuing, no? In my homeland, slavery is hardly something to bat an eye at, but through meditation and revelations of the spirit in each and every thinking being, I have sworn away from it. It is one of many reasons I have left my homeland. This is a fresh place, a new place. And the need for laws is great. Specifically those that point us all towards balance. For does not one act decently in hopes to be treated such?"
He glances around the room, taking in the faces of the others around him, looking for silent agreement.
"I will be a willing part of your community simply for the chance to speak with others. To teach and be taught. To show that when balance is upheld...justice...fair payment. When these things are held above all else. As She shows us we must, we will find harmony."
With that, Asan steps forward. Slowly taking out a dagger so as not to alarm anyone, he sweeps the blade swiftly across the tips of his right fingers, making three small cuts. Then, making his mark with the three drops of blood, he steps back with a bow.
"You have my pledge to honor the spirit of this community and do what I can to make it an even better one."
DM: I'll try to have my crunch up tonight

Taissa Sloane |

"Aye, an' agin' sorry I am fer kind'a sayin' things an' hooken' me words on't ye self and Daya." Suny shakes her head.
"I bet Daya understands me'selfs feelin's. Havin' ideas whut be hard ta share with others they find they selfs surrounded by..."
Not to have the words with which to speak and make one understood was hard in such a land. She was fortunate to know the tongue of animals and thus speak with her beloved Daya.
"I understand you better, now. And aye, I'm certain Daya and you share a similar obstacle in communicating. Mayhap in time, you will both find a way to overcome", Taissa replies earnestly.

Dain GM |

sorry for the late reply everyone, I'll try to be more prompt in the future.
No worries, it's all good.
Cassius is well pleased to see your pledge and nods at you.
"This is a good thing; unfortunately we do not have a school at this time. But a place of learning - this is not only helpful to the people, but it shows a sign of growth and maturity for our community."
He smiles, clearly pleased at the idea.
"No longer will we be a mere congregation of tradesmen and warriors; we shall be seen as far more... civilized," he says with satisfaction at the thought.
The party continues to enjoy their time together at the inn; chatting and enjoying each other's company.
Even as they relax with each other, the two in the corner continue to stare. But at this point the human has leaned back and lit a long cheroot, watching you intently as the half-elf sips his drink, examining you all and turns to the human to says something quietly.
The human grins at the words and nods; then blows a long stream of smoke in your direction as he continues to watch you.

Taissa Sloane |

"So...whut did people be thinkin;' about tha' feller wearin' tha' green belt who were walkin' with tha' Lord and such?" Suny asks.
In lowered voice, sitting at the table of the inn, surrounded by the folk of Beacon, Taissa answers, "He is powerful. Perhaps more so than the Regent, but a different kind of power. I'd watch out for that human."
The human and half-elf continued their observations and at times, animated conversation.
"Those two peer at us. Mayhap we should introduce ourselves?" gesturing subtly with her eyes toward the males.

Suny |

Suny is not adverse to watching people back in return. (^_^)
In the closeness of the Inn Suny lowers the blanket she's wearing such that is drapes, Toga-like, around her brown shoulders. When seated she tends to pull her legs up and hence 'sit' cross legged upon what ever chair or stool is offered.
Leaning closer to Taissa she nudges her companion and points towards the pair.
"Here...theys fellers be right set with they eyes upon us, hey?" She smiles brightly to the pair who are now the object of her own attentions. (^_^)
"Who does any one be thinkin' tha' t'other Elf feller were who were struttin' about with tha' Lord?" Suny does her best to snag Vick for even just a moment and ask him this question.
Suny nods at Taissa's words, then giggles when their thoughts are revealed as being the same.
Am up for going for a chat with the pair if any one else is? (^_^)
