Corsairs of Varisia

Game Master dain120475

“Corsairs of Varisia” is a homebrew campaign which has low magic; emerging technology in the form of firearms; reavers, swashbucklers, buccaneers, and pirates.

“Corsairs of Varisia” campaign pits the starting party in a emerging town situated between Riddleport and Magnimar.

The town, formerly Roderic’s Cove, had been conquered by pirates from Riddleport, but has been recently liberated from support from the south to stop the advance of Riddleport into their waters.

The town was renamed “Beacon” and the lord of the town is calling on any who wish to make their fortune and become something great; with little to aid them but their wits and steel.

Update - Asan narrowly misses his target (AC 17: Dex +4; +3 studded leather). An adjustment to Stefan's target has been factored in as well.

Asan - you've distracted the enemy from butchering Geser where he lays, so that's good times. Polux has yet to go as well as Taissa and Daya.

As Taissa has Fast Movement so she will be able to move to AH:54 next to Asan and attempt to attack the enemy as well.

Attack with Lucern Hammer
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18

If it hits -
1d12 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

EDIT: Okay, that hits the guy, too - but for crappy damage so he's still up.

Daya will wait to go until after Polux as there are a few options left depending on what can happen next.

Geser, if you're still up I'll still need a Con Check to make sure you're not bleeding out; hopefully you'll make it, but if not a person with a Heal Check can probably stabilize you in a few rounds at worst case scenario.

As one of the corsairs moves away from Polux, the man swings his weapon, in the hopes of ending the fight there and then, bringing it in a wide downwards arc aimed at his opponent's shoulder blades.

AoO: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Damage: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (4, 1) + 9 = 14

Ok, so... If this doesn't take down my opponent as he moves away, Polux will chase him, moving to AA:31, and attacking again in Round 3.

Earth Breaker: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Damage: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (3, 4) + 9 = 16

If he goes down, Polux moves 30' forward, to AC:42, drawing the musket, dropping his Earth Breaker, and shoots at the corsair fighting Asan (the one in AI:55?).

Musket Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Damage: 1d12 ⇒ 10

I believe the above should have -2 for a range increment? And -4 for the corsair being in combat? Guess the total to hit comes down to 10? :/

Update –

As Geser lays at the feet of his allies, he gives a choking gasp on the blood in his lungs; unfortunately, the cough rends what little coagulation is in process and he continues to bleed out…

Polux takes a mighty swing at the enemy as he moves to rush off and leaves a bloody trail of gore down his back between his kidneys. Still, the man is able to hang on just enough to get to Hack and deliver his own brand of damage when Polux rushes over and takes one more stroke against his enemy and finishes the scum!

Meanwhile, now that Daya sees that the three men are clustered hard around a single dying pirate, she quickly tacks over to AI:54 and takes an attack at the pirate at A:55

Attack with talon on pirate –
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21

If it hits –
1d4 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

EDIT:

As Daya moves over quickly to defend her mistress, the stroke was good enough to drop the pirate – he falls over at their feet shrieking and is dead.

Top of Round 4

The pirate between Hack and Stefan looks at each man and curses in his own foul tongue and takes another slash at Hack, hoping to at least drop the barbarian before he himself falls to his almost certain death!

Attack at Hack
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

If it hits –
1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Meanwhile, in all of this time, the final pirate who had dashed into the tent a few moments ago has not reappeared...

Likely he is in the tent attempting something; but what can it be?

Round 4 Sum Up

Via New Coordinates –

Asan……….AC:55…….8 HP
Daya……… AI:54…….15 HP
Geser……… AJ:56……-2 HP (Bleeding out – Con Check at DC 12
Hack………. X:30……..15 HP left – (NOTE: 9 normal; 6 from raging)
Polux……… AA:31……23 HP
Stefan……... X:32……24 HP
Suny………. AF:33……-2 HP – Stabile
Taissa………AH:54……29

Cool, so no new battle map at this point, you guys know where you are and loading battle maps are a pain for each round, unfortunately.

Needless to say – there are only two pirates left. The first is between Hack and Stefan; but he’s mostly dead. One good hit from any of you guys should be able to get him.

He took a swing at Hack but he missed, which is good times.

The disturbing thing is the missing guy who went into the tent at W:50 – he hasn’t come out yet, who knows what he is up to.

Geser – I need another Con check from you this round – DC is one point higher for 12 instead of 11. It’s not too bad if you fail, as Taissa will at least attempt a Healing Check on you for her turn.

Alright, gang – it’s your move – what do you do?

Okay, I'm not sure what I want to do with Taissa - if Geser makes his save, that means she will not need to use First Aid on him. If he doesn't make the save, she will need to attempt it.

For some reason I thought Taissa had ranks in Heal, but I was incorrect. She does have a healer's kit; she'll do what she can to help heal Geser, but for now I'll wait to see if he's going to be able to stabilize first.

Also, I sent a PM to Suny to let her know she's conscious and there is still at least the guy in the tent...

Hack, technically your move ended on the bottom of round 4. Round 5 starts soon - but we're looking from a save from Geser and possibly a Heal Check from Taissa if necessary.

At which point Round 5 starts and the enemy is up at the top.

Hey gang, don't know what's going on with Geser, for now I'm going to try to figure out what's up with a Heal Check from Taissa.

"Asan, he is bleeding badly - come; help me," she says to him even as Asan crouches near her to assist.

Heal Check -
1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 1 + 2 = 11

EDIT: Crap.

Her best efforts, coupled with Asan's efforts, don't seem to be arresting the bleeding.

Seeing that Polux has managed to revive Suny, Taissa calls out to him.

"Polux - well done with Suny - but Geser is still bleeding out! Please, I need your aid," she says calling out to him, hoping for assistance.

Daya has no desire to try to enter a strange tent, so for now she waits by Taissa.

Suny - this is still combat and you have a Move Action and Standard Action.

At this time I am going to assume you are getting up as your Move Action and that you are moving to the tent as your Standard (second Move Action)? My only issue is that I don't know where that leaves you on the map via coordinates. For now I am simply going to move you to AE:39 for now.

Please include coordinates next time, it really helps me out.

Round 5 – top of the round –

Suddenly, from the inside of the tent the corsair steps out 5 foot step and lets something off into the air Move Action.

There is a terrific burning and crackling, and from his hands a long thin object rushes forward into the sky for –

1d6 ⇒ 6 x 90 feet = 540 Feet

As it rockets into the air, it suddenly explodes into a wide burst of flame and color that can be seen for a tremendous distance.

The pirate is also holding another musket. Glancing around, he sees the company moving toward him.

Right, that was the enemies action – he is holding the musket, but he cannot use it as he already took his actions this round.

Your move: Okay, gang - it's your move, there seems to be only one more pirate left... for now. Good luck!

Taissa uses a Free Action -

"No! They must be attempting to signal for more support!" she cries out in horror.

Taissa will look to Geser, and attempt to use another Heal Check on him, praying that Polux can move to aid them...

Heal Check to stabilize Geser - (second dose of Healing Kit used)
1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 1 + 2 = 13

"Polux - the second scroll! Asan - please - help me!" she cries out, hoping that Asan's Aid will be enough to Stabilize Geser (a successful Aid Check will be all that is needed to do that), and that Polux is able to move to aid them.

She turns to Daya -

"Fly, my friend - turn your eye to land and sea - tell us all who, or what, that scum has signaled!"

Daya will take off and soar into the air to scout out what is going on via the firework.

Meanwhile, the pirate is up and moving (though wounded) at X:52 and has his musket. Next round he will be attacking...

Geser: If you roll a Con Check you will be able to try to stabilize. In this case you can roll twice - once for last round (DC 12) and once for this round (DC 13) - if either of them succeed, you stabilize, otherwise you will continue to bleed...

Stefan - your attack has scored a hit on the enemy, but it is not enough to push him into the red yet. Remember, of all of the enemies, he was the most hardy before he ran.

Summary – thus far…

The corsair’s eyes gleam fiercely. It’s clear that at any moment he will simply step back five feet and fire his musket straight into Stefan’s face!

However, with a mighty roar, Hack charges forward manfully and skewers the enemy, ripping him apart and spilling his innards onto the ground, causing him to drop the loaded musket – still charged.

Hack – at this time you have a total of 9 HP normal, and I think 15 with rage? When your rage is done, you’ll be at 9 HP; but you won’t be unconscious, though a bit fatigued for a moment or two. Meanwhile I believe you only had 2 scrolls – one of Cure Light and one of Cure Moderate. You used the Cure Light one on Suny, so all you have left is the Cure Moderate one – unfortunately.

Taissa seems fairly relieved, but a bit worried about Daya’s absence – although it has only been a few seconds so far.

She looks to Polux and any who may have skill in healing.

”Geser is still unconscious – and he is bleeding badly. The magic scroll would be useful in healing him – however, at the least we must attempt to use some sort of mundane medicine to staunch his wounds.”

Her nostrils crinkle marginally at the remaining smell of sulfur from the explosion of the firework and she is concerned about what it portends.

”I suspect we have little time before more trouble starts – though gods only know what will happen, and when…” she says quickly.

”I would ask that any with skill in Healing help aid me in binding Geser’s wounds – he is fading quickly,” she implores the group.

”I hope that Daya will return soon – I sent her to scout and see what devilry that explosion might bring us all… at any moment there could be trouble from dark ritual above,” she says grimly glancing at the tall hill about a quarter of a mile away, the sound of screams, combat and peppered gunshots still resounding even now.

Okay – so I know it’s a bit of cheating on my part for you guys benefit – but to hurry things along you formally have 4 rounds to take actions. Declare whatever you want to do – but it must be something that can be done in four rounds. After that time, then we’ll deal with the next part.

Meanwhile – Taissa pushes her hair out of her face and attempts another Healing check on Geser until someone can help her.

From here you have 4 rounds to act – please declare your actions for the next 4 rounds. Thanks!

Taissa’s Round 1 Action – Search Geser’s Gear –

Ah ha! These tools will certainly help me bind his wounds…

Taissa has discovered Geser’s

Surgeons Tools:

Tools, Surgeon's

Price 20 gp; Weight 5 lbs.

When used in conjunction with a healer's kit, surgeon's tools raise the kit's bonus to a +3 circumstance bonus on Heal checks to treat wounds or deadly wounds.

Round 2 Action –

Heal Check on Geser –
1d20 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 + 2 + 1 = 15 Healing Kit Doses used: 3 and Surgeon’s Tools

"Never mind - he is stable now..." she says to the group "though I suspect he could use more pronounced healing," she says glancing at the others.

Okay – that’s taken care of – Geser is now stable at -6 HP.

Taissa’s Round 3 and 4 actions

Taissa is not sure what the others will do, but she decides to take the musket that she fired earlier and load it now.

This takes her one round to get the musket and ammo – and one Full Round to load it.

Geser – you’re alive but unconscious at -6 HP. You can’t act until/unless someone is able to use magical healing on you.

Okay, guys, let me know what you all do for the next four rounds.

Stefan - the gunfire is coming from at the hill that is a quarter mile of a way from you. At the top of the hill is place where the ritual is performed - the fighting is likely between John and his men and the people in the ritual.

Formally that would put you at M:22 - though you may not want to be so far from the others as they won't all be able to get over there in four rounds.

That said - you have 4 rounds to act - can I get a coordinate for where you want to move specifically so I can put you on the map?

Picking up Geser and moving towards AA:49.

"Unfortunately, I don't think we are in shape for it, but we should lay an ambush for whomever is coming" - he adds, laying his companion carefully down.

Suny blinks and raises an eyebrow...."Now peoples wan'a disguise 'em selves...?" She seems to ask herself the question more rhetorically than anything else. She shakes her blond mop of hair.

Round 1: Begin scouring the campsite and dragging bodies to where they will most quickly and easily concealed (Which of the tents will be best for this?) Getting the stronger members of the party to give the most help to get it done as quick as possible.

Round 2: Probably more of the same, since there were quite a few bad guys about.

Round 3: Actually stripping out of her armor and shucking into various cast offs of clothing/items from said deceased Pirates, the better to actually disguise one's self. And giving hints and pointers to every one else so as to help them in their changing of costumes.

No actual 'Disguise' skill but Suny can 'bluff' perhaps?1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22

Round 4: Not sure is Suny would have this much time left..*Shrug*

"We dun't all hide. That'd be stoopid. Half an' half. Them's whut is best with tha' shooters should be tha' one's ta' be hidin' an' waitin'." She skips over to Stefan.

"I be a fair dab at swingin' me fists, so I should be one ta' help ye when things be all close an' personal, like. T'is why I suggested we's be sneakin' up on 'em first." She smiles.

"Of tha' two of us, which should be doin' tha' most gabbin'? You talk putry...maybe too purty? Has ye a burr ye could be swallowin' ta' rough some of tha' shine from ye speakin'?" She asks.

Suny - four rounds is 24 seconds. Donning/removing studded leather is at least 5 rounds - even if it is "hastily" done.

You can move 30 feet in one round via a move action; or 60 feet using a double move. A "Search" via Perception is a standard action - typically you can do the move action and standard action to get from a point to search a point.

It would take you one round to search the nearest tent at least - and the nearest tent to you is V:44. You can move to there and search the inside of the tent - theoretically other tents as well - but not in 4 rounds and certainly not enough time to reach a body and grab it and drag it back to a particular place.

*Nods* Suny is definitely not wasting time searching any tents. Moving bodies...putting shirt/cloth/what ever over her armor sounds good. Moving things along *Hustle, hustle, hustle* (^_~)

Heck, by the sounds of it...we aren't expecting another ship to be pulling up then. We'd see it long before now. So...where is our surprise coming from....?

"If we hold our position behind cover, I think we have the advantage. We can have the most dextrous of us firing the muskets - mine is still loaded and with 5 more rounds to use - while the others recharge them. We make every shot count" - Polux adds, putting his loaded musket down, leaning against the small makeshift wall - "Who needs to reload? Do it quick"

I think cover is our best bet against muskets touch attacks. If we have cover and they do not, we have a HUGE advantage, so I say we keep our heads down until they come out of the tree line (I am assuming they are coming from there, for some reason), and then give them hell. Bottom line, Taissa, Asan, Stefan and Suny shoot, while me and Hack reload [wow... everyone is based off Dex :D] - that is an initial 4 shot volley. I am hoping if we all gather our enemie's stuff, that may give us another 4 loaded muskets for a second 4 shot volley. With me and HAck reloading, next round is a 2 shot volley - 10 musket touch attacks is nothing to snuff at. If they close, we can engage them in melee. If not, at least we keep them busy. What do you think? Is this too much OOC talk Dain GM?

Suny, you were already up when the last corsair fired the warning into the air, so from our conversation you know that probably some more bad guys are coming - they are not coming from the water most likely, so probably from the tree line.

"The name's Polux boy" - the man answers Stefan, with a grim look - "And you don't need that much skill to shoot these, as long as it hits its mark, it'll do damage"

They are ranged touch attacks Stefan, and you have high Dex.

"If you stand there, you are a sitting duck for them, and they will have no reason to close in until after they shoot you full of holes - plus if they engage you, we are as likely to hit you as them" - he warns.

"I know very little of these weapons as well," Asan comments to Stefan, reloading. "But I will be ready to stand with you if and when our enemies come close."

he will then find a place behind cover, but that he can get to Stefan's position in one move if need be.

Right, we have a direction and not much time to actually do anything 'sneaky' like. So. Gather weapons and ammunition and take up firing position 'behind' the wall with Polux and every one else. So around wall AA:47-50
