Corsairs of Varisia

Game Master dain120475

“Corsairs of Varisia” is a homebrew campaign which has low magic; emerging technology in the form of firearms; reavers, swashbucklers, buccaneers, and pirates.

“Corsairs of Varisia” campaign pits the starting party in a emerging town situated between Riddleport and Magnimar.

The town, formerly Roderic’s Cove, had been conquered by pirates from Riddleport, but has been recently liberated from support from the south to stop the advance of Riddleport into their waters.

The town was renamed “Beacon” and the lord of the town is calling on any who wish to make their fortune and become something great; with little to aid them but their wits and steel.

Waiting for Hack to post his actions.

Muskets are ranged touch in the first 2 increments (without grit); but they suffer the standard -2 per range increment and a -4 if you're not proficient in them (that will likely change after this combat, I'm thinking of classifying them as Martial Weapons for the future).

Polux - there was four muskets laying on the ground now - Stefan has taken his action, as have you, formally, though you have one more round to do something.

However, if Hack is willing to keep swapping out/reloading muskets to aid you, that could help a lot if you had some cover to hide behind.

Taisa is a good shot with Point Blank and Precise Shot to aid if any are in melee. She will be doing what she can to Aid in whatever way she is able.

Suny - I will say this via your Perception roll - instead of being able to see you may remember some basic information so far:

1. There is a ship moored in the very harbor that is less than 200 feet from the shore.

2. Via your knowledge of the sailing - the ship is rigged like many of the ships of the south - specifically Osirion and Khatapesh - it is rigged much like a Dhow. Again, this seems to be consistent with their gear and weapons, and very inconsistent with the rigging for most ships this far north. Also, as you know - a longboat can move up to 30 feet a round.

3. You seem to recall that their cursing and language has always been a foreign tongue that none of you understand.

I'm not sure if any of that helps, but I hope it is a little useful.

Hack agrees that loading and unloading may be his best option at this point. He is covered in blood from his recent kills, and he is just trying to catcyh his breath as the rage leaves him for the moment.

Aye, a sound...idea...I'll load...

Alright, for now I'm going to assume that Hack is merely going to wait at his current coordinates and that he will take all four rounds to re-load muskets.

Unfortunately, I don't have time to make a proper battle map at this point as I'm running late for my first job and I will be gone until later tonight due to my second job and I'm not sure when I'll be home. Hopefully around 7 but could be as late as 9.

At this point, I have your coordinates on the map fixed, so no need to worry about that - however; this is something that does happen in the short time I have before I have to go -

Hack, you have time to load only 2 muskets, as it takes time to gather them up and bring them to you and you are currently fatigued - though if I'm correct you dropped the rage at the end of the last pirate and have also spent the 4 rounds recovering your strength?

As the company looks to the northwest where the battle rages up the hill, suddenly Daya flies back to alight near Taissa and speaks to her companion quickly.

Taissa's eyes widen and she turns to the others -

"My friends; it seems that the last rear guard of the ship left to protect it in case of emergency is rowing hard toward us even now!" she says.

"A longboat is currently moving from the ship to the shore - Daya says she sees a total of four men in it; and they are rowing hard fast toward us - they will likely be here soon..."

Cool, that's the update, I'll have the battle map up tonight, as promised. Sorry for any delay, and I'll see you guys tonight!

Stefan looks at his injured companions and realizes that they are in no shape to take anymore hits.

"I appreciate your concern Polux, but I am best suited for distracting them so the rest of you can get a good first volley. There are only four of them so it shouldn't b a problem. I will endeavor to not get shot, it could ruin my cloak afterall."

Stefan grabs a small branch and sticks whatever food is available on it and stands by the fire rosting it, his sword sheathed at his side.

"I will talk at them first, once they are all in your sights, fire. I'll take that as my cue to attack."

While you have been moving, so have the other pirates - they have acted; now it is your turn.

Based on everyone's earlier posts, you are all currently where you asked. That said, it's currently your move.

The weird little icon on the map is supposed to be the enemy boat. I'm sorry it's a bit crudely done, but it's the best I could do.

You're up!

Taissa currently holds her musket at the ready and turns to the others -

"The first enemy looks to be about ninety feet away..." she says.

"If I move up a bit, I think I can take him! What should I do?" she asks the others.

You guys seem to have a plan - that said; it's your call... Just tell Taissa in-game.

Hack is at V:41 and Stefan is at V:42 and Asan is at W:45 and Suny is at AA:47 and Polux is AA:48. That said, go ahead!

Finally, if any of you decide to move - please tell me your coordinates for where you end up. Thanks!

Okay - it looks like we're waiting for Hack; I'm hoping he'll check in soon, based on what I've seen so far, it looks like his usual check in time is in the morning.

At this point I am going to be moving Suny's character to Y:52. This would put her in the open and without any protection, but it leaves her completely visible to the pirates.

Suny, as you know, using the Bluff Skill to attempt to deceive someone (I am assuming that you are pretending to "swagger" for the purpose of trying to trick the pirates into believing something, but I do not know what that is at this time) would take at least a round all by itself - unless you are attempting a Feint, which is at least a Standard Action.

Since I don't know what your plan is specifically - but I do know that it would have to be at least something the enemy could see, that's why I am moving you into the open and alone so they can all watch your Bluff via you swaggering around. Also, since you only have one Move Action via the Bluff skill, that's why you are - unfortunately - unable to move any more than the 30 feet.

*Nods* Y:52 is fine. Suny will continue to move towards the point on the docks where I assume Stefan is moving...So some where around N:45. Again, am in middle of heavy work time. Please feel free to bot Suny as needed. Posts from me can only be brief as my posting windows are short.

The pirates force their ship up hard against the beach. Even before it hits the coast, one of them seems to be ordering his men out hard and fast. They leap from the boat into the surf and move up on to the beach with weapons drawn and ready.

That was their move – it’s your move now.

Updated battle map Here.

It doesn’t take much to deduce that the figure at S:65 must be their leader, chief – or possibly the First Mate left to watch the ship. He is larger than the others – roughly 6’3” and is wearing a well polished chain shirt and carrying a light shield. In his hand is a well-made Khopesh. He is barking orders at the other three lads in a harsh and unknown – but at this point almost familiar – language (it’s familiar because it’s clearly the same language they’ve been speaking the whole time).

He seems older than the other three men who are only carrying scimitars and wearing studded leather; and crueler, somehow. He looks at you all and seems to curse you in his foul tongue, gesturing toward Suny specifically with his weapon, and also at Taissa for some reason.

That said:

Your Move…

Not sure what to do, Taissa will Hold Action to see what her companions do.

Had a brief break between jobs. New updates come tonight after everyone has a chance to post.

Hack continues to load muskets as his companions fire.

Shenkt "Hack" Corchran wrote:

Hack - at this point all the muskets are currently loaded. It is my assumption that if one of your companions fires their musket - as they each have 2 muskets to shoot, you will instantly take that musket and start to reload it right away after they have fired? If Polux uses his musket, you are able to start reloading it at once.

That said -

Taissa watches the pirates with grim determination.

If these are anything like the ones that they fought earlier - never mind their "Chief" - that means that if they are able to flank one of their allies, that person will suffer great damage.

As such, she targets the first one she can, hoping that if she drops him fast, he will not be able to move up and flank; guessing that she will not be able to defeat the Chief so easily.

Putting aside her musket for a moment - hoping to use it on the enemy with more armor (who is a bit farther away) - she takes a shot with her Composite Longbow -

Attack with Composite Short bow (+2 Strength Modifier)-
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21

1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

EDIT: That succeeds on the pirate at R:60. He does not look happy at the damage, but it was not that potent of a hit...

We got Stefan, Polux, Asan and Suny to go as well. Good luck!

Stefan steps out from behind the tent and advances towards the pirates.

"It would probably be wiser for you to get back in your boat and leave. Your friends were rather churlish and made the mistake of attacking. Of course they paid a high price for crossing steel with myself, Stefan Lebeda, the greatest swordsman in all of Golarion. Perhaps you should learn from their lesson while I am feeling merciful."
Stefan flourishes his sword as he falls into a fighting stance, anticipating any attack.

Response:

Next round, you'll need to roll both your Crane Wing and your attack for next round when it comes up.

Good luck!

Cool - so now I need actions from Polux, Suny and Asan, and we're good to go for the end of the round.

Nodding over to the brash fencer, Asan hops over the wall and moves to stand with Stefan. (to V56)
Calling out to the "Leader";

"Indeed, he is quite a swordsman. On top of that, you are quite outnumbered. It would be quite wise of you to return to your ship. No more blood need be shed on this beach."

Intimidate: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22

Okay – for now I am going to have to bot both Polux and Suny at this time. Sorry for that, guys. In any case, here we go –

Polux will take a shot at the enemy that Taissa has already managed to hit (the guy at R:60).

Seeing that the enemy is a bit far out of range for his taste, he uses his Composite Longbow with a +4 Strength Modifier for now –
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

If it hits –
1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

Meanwhile, Suny quickly dives over the wall to Z:56 and takes Polux’s musket and takes a shot at the same enemy –

Shot with musket at -4 penalty
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16

If it hits –
1d12 ⇒ 12

At which point she drops the musket and Hack picks it up and takes his Full Round Action to reload it.

End of round…

Sum-up of Round 1

Stefan steps up to boldly confront the enemy in front of him – not certain if any of these southern folk can even understand the Common tongue, he still makes a rather bold attempt to urge them to leave now or die.

Taissa shoots an enemy and wounds him marginally. Knowing that these scum can be vicious if they flank – and hoping to eliminate the threat – Polux and Suny also attempt to follow the same tactic and fire their ranged weapons from behind cover.

While Polux missed, it seems that Suny was able to hit her target squarely for heavy damage.

Asan alone attempts a rather unusual tactic.

The heavily wounded man seems to ignore the musket he is carrying and instead he leaps over the wall and moves in between the four warriors and the unscathed fencer hoping to intimidate one of them.

Pirates Action

Following the orders of their Chief, the three pirates rush fast down to the south behind the wall (via Double Move) to get around the cover and attempt to strike their foes.

The pirate that Asan had demoralized is also heavily wounded and is at AA:57. The others seem to be quite unscathed.

Meanwhile, the Chief watches Stefan and Asan with his cruel smile.

I had a hunch you were busy - no worries.

Technically speaking I didn't know if Asan was formally dropping his musket or not - so I edited that in case he wants to still be holding it.

However, Suny could pick your musket, as I had you use your bow, or Taissa's musket (via the same thing).

But at this point you guys may want to try a little melee instead...

Also remember; the guy with the "red box" is wounded and in this case he seems a bit unstable via the intimidate that Asan used.

Dain GM, some questions:
- there is a green (I guess grass) and a more yellow like area in the map where we are at (assuming it is sand) - is this all normal terrain, or is some of it "difficult"?
- How do we traverse the "cover"? Does it count as difficult terrain, or do we need some sort of roll?
- What weapons/armour are the bad guys using?

Good questions -

1. The yellow area is indeed sand. You are near the beach and they hit dirt and rand toward you. There is no penalty for difficult terrain to run across the sand, though there will be to run through shallow water in the future - for now I'm trying not to bog things down with lots of extras to keep track of.

2. The cover is literally a 3 foot high ruined stone fence. It provides a +2 cover bonus from ranged attacks. An enemy could either use Acrobatics to hop over it and keep going as part of a move action (because I'm honestly thinking of just allowing jumping as part of a move action in the future, because who ever heard of a situation when you can't run, hop over something and land then take a swing at someone? Really, is hoping over a ledge so challenging? It's not - I'm just tinkering with that mechanic). For now, standard rules apply, but in their case there is a gap at Y:57 and they came around the back side of the wall, too.

3. It depends on the guy - the standard gear seems to be scimitars and they are also wearing armor that looks kind of like this which you believe to be "Studded Leather". However, the "Chief" is wearing a Breastplate and is carrying a light shield and a Khopesh. He is the one who is ready to attack Asan and Stefan.

In your case, if you want to move over to help Stefan, you can just "hop over" the wall as part of your move and possibly reach the enemy at V:57, if that is your plan.

Hope it helps - now I'm off to work!

Sorry, still busy in Real Life.

Two questions. Is Suny prone? Or just crouching? Does her standing/straightening up cause the pair of pirates to get AoO?

Staying 'Fully defensive' at the current time with two bad guys on her AC 22 (Armor plus two tonfa plus being 'fully defensive')

Depending on what happens next, Suny will either drop the tonfa and attempt a 'Boar strike' against Pirate in Z:57 (Must make two unarmed attacks and hit to do an additional 2D6 Bleed damage). OR (Use acrobatics to get over the wall to Y:56 and hence possible another +2 AC vs this pair of pirates.)

Very much cheers and best wishes to all. (^_^)

Quick update -

Suny - for now you are in "Full Defense" this round, then. I'm not sure if you able to make an attack while in "Full Defense" (remember, this is different than "Fighting Defensively). More clarification is found Here. Full defense grants you an automatic +4 dodge bonus, but it is a Standard Action, so you can't do this and make an attack action or Attacks of Opportunity.

The enemy will be hard pressed to hit you, though - if you are "Fighting Defensively" that is different, though. Next round you will be able to act, but I need a little clarification on whether it is formally "Full Defense" or "Fighting Defensively" as there is a difference and I'm not sure which you're using.

Meanwhile -

Polux is fairly tense and steps up hard to assist his comrades, not liking the odds of "Three Against One" against Suny. Therefore he takes a massive strike with his weapon and watches it crush the skull of his enemy, dropping him.

Polux wrote:
"Well, make that two against one," he says with a dry voice.

Stefan's eyes narrow and he moves quickly to U:57 and takes a stab at the enemy.

Stefan Lebeda wrote:
"Your funeral, poor choice."

The leader nimbly evades the thrust, though barely, and he flashes Stefan a wicked looking smile.

Free Action -

"Ila jaheem ma'ik," he says with a gleam in his eye.

Need updates from Hack and Suny at this point -

I'll wait a bit for clarification from Suny - but for now, I'm going to have Taisa act at the end of the round (I'll give Suny a chance to clarify if she'd doing Full Defense formally or Defensive Fighting - her post did say "Full Defense", but I have a hunch she meant "Fighting Defensively" so I'll wait a bit. If she hasn't posted in the next hour or so, I'll assume she wanted Full Defense and have Taissa act, then do the new round with the pirates.

Look for that in about an hour or so...

Male hp 7/21,(5/5 musket shots), AC 15, T15 FF10, bab +3, melee +6, ranged +6, cmb 3, cmd 16, F +3, R +6, W +3, Init +4, Perc +6, Human Martial Artist 3

It was never said that Asan dropped his musket, also the Intimidate was directed at the leader. Also, being immune to fear, the leader's Intimidate will have no effect.

Asan will grit his teeth and move to flank with Stefan as best he can and avoid any AOs

defensively and using combat expertise; net AC 19

Swinging his scimitar at the leader: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25(+8 base, -2 fighting defensive, -1 combat expertise, +2 flanking)
If it hits: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

edit: confirm crit
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
if confirmed: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
oh well...

It's true about the thing via the musket - I wasn't sure, it was merely a hunch, but it's all good, you still have it, if you need it. Also, I assumed that you were using intimidate on enemy closest to you, which was a regular pirate, but that works out alright, mainly because the leader is Immune to Fear.

Meanwhile, I haven't heard back from Suny and I am going to assume that is because she AFK, but I'm also guessing she's going to stick with the initial Full Defense.

That said, here is Taissa's move -

Taissa watches Stefan’s attack grimly and hops the wall moving to Y:55 and takes a shot at the pirate chief with her musket –

Shot with Musket – FYI – Taissa does have both Point Blank Shot and luckily she also has Precise Shot – which is good news as she is currently less than 30 feet from the guy and shooting into melee.
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14

If it hits –
1d12 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

Meanwhile, Daya moves to Y:58 to flank with Polux and attack the wounded pirate.

Attack with Claw via Flanking –
1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 7 + 2 = 12

If it hits –
1d4 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

EDIT: Crap, that sucked a lot more than I expected.

Alright, I'll have something up soon.

Top of new round –

The only pirate that has not yet been hit swings around to flank Polux with his companion and attacks Polux from AB:55

Attack with Flank
1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 6 + 2 = 13

If it hits –
1d6 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 + 2 = 10

Sneak Attack Damage –
2d6 ⇒ (3, 4) = 7

The wounded pirate – seeing his opportunity to flank with Polux shall also try a flanking attack as well from his current position –

Attack with Flank
1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 6 + 2 = 24

If it hits –
1d6 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 2 = 8

Sneak Attack Damage –
2d6 ⇒ (3, 6) = 9

At this time the Chief laughs long and loud. While he has already been wounded by Asan, he clearly has eyes for the untouched duelist in the party which he assumes is some sort of noble lord. That said, he makes his attack on Stefan at this time –

Attack with Khopesh on Stefan
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27

If it hits –
1d8 + 4 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 4 + 2 = 15

EDIT: Okay, it looks like this needs to confirm –
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23

If it hits –
1d8 + 4 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 4 + 4 + 2 = 16

EDIT: Stefan, I don't know if your Crane Style thing works at this time - if it does work before he gets a chance to hit, toss up your action.

Also, I'll need a Constitution Check at this time; DC 17.

Summary coming soon...

Male hp 7/21,(5/5 musket shots), AC 15, T15 FF10, bab +3, melee +6, ranged +6, cmb 3, cmd 16, F +3, R +6, W +3, Init +4, Perc +6, Human Martial Artist 3

Dain GM:
holy cow that's alot of damage! Did the chief at least drop his shield? Also, regarding Crane Style (since i have it too); Crane Style

To help Clarify Icons –

Via New Coordinates –

Asan……….U:59…….8 HP
Daya……… AB:53…….15 HP
Geser……… U:41……Unconscious but stable
Hack………. Y:56……..15 HP left – (NOTE: 9 normal; 6 from raging)
Polux……… AA:56……6 HP
Stefan……... U:55……-7 HP
Suny………. Z:56……11 HP – Stabile
Taissa………AB:54……29

New Combat Map

Okay – for now I’m going to use Taissa and Daya first, as this is a bit more challenging than I expected…

First, Daya will move to fly/hover over Stefan’s Prone body at U:55 and attack while flanking with Asan –

Attack with Claw via Flanking –
1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 7 + 2 = 28

If it hits –
1d4 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

Meanwhile, Taissa will grab the now loaded musket from Hack (who had loaded it earlier) and fires it at the pirate chief with a Touch Attack –

Musket Shot via Ranged Touch –
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17

If it hits –
1d12 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

EDIT: That said, the pirate chief has been hit twice and suffered a total of (including Asan’s Damage) 20 points and is doing poorly –

Other than Daya being on top of Stefan's prone body, the rest of the map remains the same.

Okay guys, your move -

Response:

It is indeed a lot of damage; of course, he also managed to crit, and he has a pretty sick amount of damage.

I noticed you have Crane Style also, but I'm not really understanding how it works - does it allow you to take an attack before you get hit? I'm not clear; that said, it's your move and you still have flanking with Daya at this point.

FYI - be careful, I don't want to share too much, but he does have Improved Critical...

Also, the link you posted is just to the Campaign Page, it doesn't include any extra details on what Crane Style does.

Good luck!

The tension! :)

"No!" Asan says a bit louder than he had intended, seeing the chief's wicked blow. Geser is still unconcious, and Suny only just recovered...we can't lose anyone!

He swings his scimitar at the wounded chief, taking advantage of still flanking with an ally;
(Same status, re: defense)
Scimitar: 1d20 + 8 - 1 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 8 - 1 - 2 + 2 = 23
If it hits: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Counter Response:
Doh...try number two, RE: Link...Crane Style

Monk(Master of Many styles)1, Fighter (Weapon Master) 3: HP-31, AC-19, Touch-15, F+6, R+7, W+2; Perception -1, Initiative +4

Stefan contemptuously slaps aside the leader's sword.

"Foolish man! Do you truly believe that you have the skill needed to land a blow on me? You are deluded."

Stefan then attacks back.

Note:

Crane Style just makes you take less penalty and gain extra AC when fighting defensively. It is my Crane Wing feat that allows me to negate one hit per round while I am fighting defensively or using total defense. So, in this case I just negate the leader's hit.

actions:

Maintain flank with Asan, standard attack (fighting defensively).

attack vs leader 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
damage 1d8 + 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (7) + (3) + 2 = 12

status:

AC-22
hp-24/24
status-crane stance, fighting defensively

Response:

Hmm... it occurs to me it may not be so bad, if I'm reading this correctly, Stefan also has Crane Wing - which may mean that amazing amount of damage might do nothing against him - perhaps.

If that's the case, and he really is okay - then this guy may just have to take out his big guns ;)
