Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.

Karrin watches the back and forth, but adding her opinion at this point would cut into valuable eating time, and if there's still food on the table it would be completely reprehensible for Karrin to let that food go to waste. Besides, fashion wasn't one of her expertise, her old friends like Eir or Hanali, who was with management at the Silver Rose, knew far more about fashion than she did. Perhaps once she was done with all this pulled pork Karrin would helpfully point out Hanali's expertise on the subject, not that adventures usually cared much about fashion, usually cobbling together mishmashes of magic items that seldom matched or sometimes came from the same style, Gothic armor with stylish renaissance pistols and swords, with ancient stone age ion stones would fit the motif of these typical adventurers, at least the ones Karrin saw in Greyhawk, and what she'd seen of the planes walkers, the adventures of the multiverse were not much better. Still, if Hamar cared about that sort of thing Karrin wouldn't judge, there were all sorts of men that cared about the ascetics more than the practicality simply assembling the best gear for adventuring, usually the sort that liked bathhouses over whorehouses as well. Karrin didn't really have much use for either to be honest, she was able to keep her face and hands clean enough, and that's all most people saw, and in Karrin's short existence she never had any difficulties acquiring sex, although as the young tiefling glanced around the table she did notice that the pickings were suddenly very thin. Justin was way scrawny, Mel worshiped another god, and Hamar was possibly a fancy lad and that meant Karrin's other choices in the group were female. Usually it was the other way around, back in Greyhawk Karrin was ridding with a group of six men, and while she was committed to her Torreen, it didn't seem like if she and Torreen parted ways she'd have any difficulty finding a new lover. One with strong grippy arms from the few romance novels she'd read, but now with Isaac gone, there were decidedly less men for her to choose from. One should avoid mixing work and pleasure, but Karrin was a grown woman and a woman had needs. She wasn't desperate enough for a . . . whatever the male equivalent of a henhouse was . . . maybe a snakepit? But it'd been a few months since comeing to the cage and if she didn't find someone soon she'd certainly have to seek out a professional. Preferably one that specialized in women.

Justin goes silent and Hamar reaches over and shakes him, "Wizard! Are you in a meat coma from too much food!?"

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Justin swallows a large bite, almost choking in surprise at Hamar's sudden shake.

"Not yet. Gimme a minute though, working on it." Justin manages to cough out.

Justin rapidly spears another large rib from the platter as he notices Karrin eyeing the table like a (still) hungry Sabretooth.

The wizard can't figure if Karrin is deciding to eat the remaining platters whole, or wrestle with them first.

Some days he is seriously tempted to ask Nari if she can peek into what ever is actually going through Karrin's head.

Most days he is smart enough to realize he probably REEEEALLY doesn't want to know.

Justin flashes back to a passage he read during one of his many idle perusals through the book carts and stores of Ragpicker’s Square. The book had been called On the Shore of the Radiant Sea , and had been a fascinating travelogue of an adventurer named Storik who traveled extensively in the Quasielemental Plane of Mineral. Knicknamed “The Treasure Trove” it is a place where many exotic gemstones can be found. He wrote of a crystalline cave that was home to a huge alien crystal forest that was actually one being. The forest/entity, which called itself ‘Pando’ , was known to bestow potent ioun stones to those who found favor with it. Storik had mentioned a group of Orc/dao hybrids called the Earthborn that occupied the nearby tunnels and had an embassy in Sigil in Gurincraag. Storik got his portal through them

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Oh. OH. I see where you are going with this! (I think!) ;P

"Actually,... I was just recalling a portion of a book I flipped through once. A fascinating travelogue of an adventurer named,... Tuvok? No. Storik! That's it! Great read actually. Very entertaining. Maybe I should try writing down our adventures? If they'll believe Storik's story they MAY actually believe half of the things that have happened to us!" Justin grins.

"Hrm. Yeah. Maybe. ANYway, Stovik traveled extensively in the Quasielemental Plane of Mineral. Also nicknamed the "Treasure Trove". Apparently you can find VERY rare and exotic gemstones there. Stovik discovered a Crystal Cave, like an enclosed, crystalline forest. This 'forest' was actually a living entity. Called itself 'Pando'. Apparently it is friendly. And according to the book, Pando is known for gifting powerful Ioun Stones to those who make friends with it."

"Now, I've been playing around with Ioun Stones a little bit, but all I can afford to make are inferior ones. They work, but they're cracked and weak. But a good stone, I mean a really powerful one, could all but make you immune to outside mental influences."

"Hm. I'd have to see if I can find a copy of On the Shore of the Radiant Sea to see if Stovik mentioned exactly HOW to make a good impression on Pando.,..."

Justin snaps his fingers, startling Karrin who was emptying the remaining ribs from a platter with swift, ninja-esque skill while Justin had the others attention.

"I DO recall, Stovik mentioned a group of half-Orc, half-Dao who lived nearby to Pando, AND they happen to have a embassy in Sigil!"

Justin grins and spreads his arms.

"A quick look at a book, find the embassy, arrange passage, visit this 'Pando', make a new friend, and maybe a new Ioun Stone,... I'm thinking a day trip?!? At least it won't be boring!"

Justin looks at Hamar, and then the others.

Having remained silent for some time, lurking like a shadow a few steps away from the rest of the group, Alessia is not amused by the sudden intrusion into her quiet contemplation. She slowly turns to face the waitress, letting out a low sound not unlike that of an angry possum.

"No. I do not want these things. I want nothing more than to crush the bones of my enemies into powder. You are not an enemy... yet. But you are in my "personal space." Do you wish to preserve yourself?"

Justin's mouth opens, and closes, and opens, and closes,... Like a fish.

Then the wizard facepalms himself. Again.

To be honest, he's beginning to lose track of how often that has happened lately. 'Too much' would be his first guess.

Justin looks towards Karrin, his eyes pleading for help. However the warrioress is busy at the moment, diving into her heaped platter before her, piling the broken bones, and hearing the lamentation of the cooks.

With no immediate help forthcoming from that quarter, Justin smiles at Alessia.

"Yeaaaaaaah. MAYBE as 'Plan Z'. Or better yet 'Plan Triple Z'. Until then, That's a big 'NOPE'. We have SOoooo many more options open to us before we get to THAT point." Justin says through a happy face only slightly forced looking.

"On the other hand,..." Justin adds genuinely thoughtful, "Please DO keep that 'can-do' attitude. There are certainly times when the 'Simplest' plans really are the best! They've certainly served us well a time or three." He admits to the masked warrioress.

Justin remembers seeing that travelogue in a small shop called Twice Read Thrice Sold, a used bookstore on a side street named Foolscap Row off of Ragpicker’s Square. As he recalls, it’s an easy walk from their current position. The owner Ferra Rainboweyes is an odd case, a sylph Dustman

Mel shrugs

“Time is a relative concept out here in the planes. I’ve been out here for about 30 years by my reckoning, mostly Outlands and Avernus. But, I ran into a cutter from my homeworld back on the Prime that said the empire I came from was destroyed centuries ago”

In the voice of one repeating something memorized and repeated many, many times, she replies:

"I was born in 172 CY in the city of Niole Dra. In 191 CY, I took my oath on on the steps of the temple. In 211 CY, I fell in the Lich-Lord's tomb of horrors and swore unending vengeance."

She tilts her face downward, then back up again, speaking in a slightly more normal tone.

"After that, time began to pass... differently."

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Justin freezes at this comment. Just for a moment, but the absence of movement from the usually animated mage is like a siren.

"Hrm." Justin says, Taking a long pull from his cup.

"That would be,... Disconcerting, I would think?" He asks Mel casually.

Justin has a brief, horrific image of finally making his way back 'home' and discovering that centuries had passed,...

Justin shakes his head, smiling and back to his old self.

"I knew that 'time was relative' out on the planes. But NOW I'm wondering, 'Relative to WHAT?!?'" He chuckles.

Justin looks around the table, and waves a hand to shrug off the lack of reaction.

"Yeah. That one was funnier in my head too. Guess you have to have at least a passing interest in magi-spacial-temporal-causality to get it." He mumbles, burying his head back in his cup.

Mel shrugs

“It was a hard place to grow up in. Very regimented. The Suel Empire worshipped law above all else, and conformity. A lot of us were into devil worship. I went one further and went to see where the devils lived. That’s when I found out that they are just powered-up versions of normal cutters, with all the jealousies, spites, and drama we all deal with. It’s hard to be in awe of devilkin when you’ve fought next to them for years. They fart and snore like any other creature “

he sighs

I do get homesick, on occasion, but that cutter said there was some apocalypse that happened and now the empire’s lands are called the Sea of Dust”

"How can a sea be made of dust?

A sea is water and dust is dirt.

This cutter is a fool".

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

"Ah, ummmm,... yeah. Try telling that to Ekuur." Justin mumbles, wishing halfway through that he had stopped himself before he said it.

Justin shrugs, may as well explain it now.

"Friend of ours. Fire priest. From a world called,... Athas? I think? Had a magical war cataclysm a while back. Basically the world WAS like most primes, large land masses surrounded by even larger bodies of water. But not anymore. Now the entire planet is one big sand and dustball, with a few scattered oasis. So, yeah, it's possible."

"Although GENERALLY speaking you would be correct!" Justin hastily adds to Hamar.

The meal wraps up, and various desserts are offered. Mel orders a large pasty confection called baked Stygia, which turns out to be sugarberry ice cream in a pastry shell. After completing all they step out into the dreary drizzle that washes Hellgate

Heading further into the Lower Ward, the Hellgate main boulevard leads into Ragpicker’s Square. The various fiendish-themed shops are replaced by tailors, used clothes stores, large brick factories dedicated to enormous looms. Books stores and paper manufacturers also begin to appear.

Foolscap Row is a side street off the main open-air bazaar of Ragpicker’s Square, a nice-enough Road, narrow, with typical Sigilian five-six story buildings crowded and leaning in, shutting out all but a sliver of the dark grey drizzly sky. Rusting metal spikes in the Sigilian Gothik style discourage flying creatures from the roof eaves. The dripping brown water foams from bestial-faced gutters, pooling in the uneven cobbles of the road before swirling down a locked grate in the wider cul-de-sac

Twice read, Thrice Sold sits about midway down, its dusty, streaked windows full of old books. As the group goes inside they see a winding labyrinth of bookshelves exuding that heady aroma of vanilla and mold any collection of old books has. Their entrance triggers a bell above the door, and a young-looking woman dressed as a Dustman with raven-black hair and an odd deep-purple blue skin turns to greet them.

“Mr. Case, a pleasure to see you again. I hope that copy of Triaalo’s Goblin Runes and Somatic Gestures was useful to you? What can I help you with today?”

If anyone else has another errand to run now is the time

Justin looks at Alessia. He blinks. After a longer than usual silence (especially from him) he coughs very slightly.

"Yes. Well. That would do it. So, quite a while then." He offers neutrally.

In his mind however, is fresh turmoil.
Justin has heard of lots of 'Horrible Tombs'. But in all of his reading, in sources from multiple Primes, he has only heard of ONE referenced to as THE 'Tomb of Horrors'.
And if even half of what he has heard about this infamous Tomb is to be believed, being raised as an undead is one of the LEAST unpleasant things that could happen to you there,...

(Although, HOW so many stories about what can happen to you, inside a tomb that NO one has supposedly escaped in forever, have actually gotten out to be spread so far and wide, is another great mystery of the multi-verse.)

"Hello Ferra. Yes it was actually. Thank you very much. You always seem to know what I'm looking for before I do!" Justin says with a chuckle.

Justin can't help himself, he barks out a genuine laugh before he can catch it.
He does manage to quickly recover, but his smirk remains.

"It's OK Hamar. Really. It's the local name for the currency. Standard Gold Coins on most Prime worlds." The wizard assures Hamar.

Justin turns back to Ferra, having originally planned to bargain with her over the price himself. (Old habits die hard. Even though Justin's pouches are currently fuller than they have ever been outside of when he was younger and still living at home on his parents coin.)

But Justin knows that even though Ferra is 'nicer' than many in Sigil, she is no less mercenary about coins than anyone else in this bizarre city. And he DID just admit to her that he was looking for the book specifically, which is Sigil-ese for 'charge them as much as you can for it'. The fact that she only asked for 10 Ladies means she had no idea of his current windfall. So he hems, then haws, adds a 'Well,...' for good measure, and raises an eyebrow when it looks like Ferra might take the bait.

"OK. Deal." He smiles affably, and carefully counts out 10 ladies from a pouch. (Making sure it is NOT a pouch with the ancient coins in it.)

Handing Ferra the coins and accepting the book in exchange, he nods towards Hamar. "We've been doing a lot of traveling lately. Picked up a first-ever portal-hopper. Guess it's been long enough I forgot how confusing the lingo can be." He offers by way of explanation.

Justin tucks the book into a coat pocket, and has a thought.

"Ferra, odd question. Have you come across any books referring to an ancient Power, but with a lot of blanks in it? Or anyone else looking for the same kind of book?"

Justin shrugs, "It may or may not be important, related to a case we're working on. But as a long-time customer, and a friend, I'd take it as a personal favor if you'd let me know if you come across either of those. And, unlike usual, business has actually been pretty good lately. I'd be glad to make it worth your while." Justin holds up his coin pouch for emphasis.

The street outside the book shop is darkening as the peak advances. The rain has slackened, but a thick Cager fog has rolled in, blurring the edges of the buildings and limiting sight to a few paces.

Justin finds the passage about the Earthborn in the book, scanning it quickly by the light of the magic globe Ferra has hanging over the store’s sales counter.

.... in the Gurincraag district, deep in the lower levels is a neighborhood called Crystalholm. I was able to procure a guide, a Derro named Mad Marligan. Interestingly enough, he was the sanest derro I ever met. Perhaps sanity is insanity to them?

Marl, as he is nicknamed, showed me the cellar entrance in the Gem Glitter Inn , a drinking establishment catering to deep dwellers who have business “Topside”. The cellar entrance is a sloping ramp that two man-sized creatures can walk abreast. The ramp slowly spirals down to a wide road paralleling a sewer. Through a winding maze of tunnels and various neighborhoods of dwarves and gnomes of all sizes and shapes we came to Crystalholm.

The neighborhood was a very tidy spot of carven stone buildings with a pool of clear water in the center. Several earth elementals of various sizes performed cleaning tasks as Marl brought me to the home of Borik Amethyst, an Earthborn shaman. Although of orcish gensai decent, I found the Earthborn quite cultured and friendly...

"Fascinating. Truly."

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Justin bites his tongue, trying very hard not to obviously look at Merle.

"You don't say?" he asks innocently.

Bribes always welcome

Justin skims slong further, reading about Storik’s journey to the Paraelemental plane of mineral. The Earthborn has a city inside a geode that allowed a pocket of air named, Burghjarik*

Orcish

Spoiler:
Burghjarik in Orcish means ‘Big Egg’

After several scenes, Storik arrives at Pando’s dwelling. Described as a giant cave with gleaming gems lighting the interior with rainbow light, the crystalline entity asked Storik for a boon. Irritatingly, Storik doesn’t reveal what it was. The next part is vague, and Storik mentions traveling along the border or Radiance and Mineral, a place he described as some beautiful it is painful’. He returns with a ‘gift’ for Pando, and is given a stone he calls The Heart of the Blue Star. After that he retraces his steps and returns to Sigil and resumes his scholarly studies

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Justin's eyes narrow as he swiftly scans, and then re-reads the passages, flipping one page back and forth at least three times.

"Hrm. Well, that is,... a tad less satisfying than I'd hoped it would be." Justin mutters aloud.
"Figures. It's like Storik KNEW he would be publishing this later, and deliberately kept the important details to himself. Quite Clever. I like this fellow more and more." Justin chuckles.

"Fortunately, I like a good mystery! And this 'Pando' seems friendly enough."

The wizard re-reads the passage again, somehow managing not to trip or bump into anything as the group walks. (Although this is likely due to his being firmly ensconced in the center of the fairly large group.) Seems this is not the first time Justin has read 'on the run' as it were.

Justin slaps the book closed, and taps it against his chin as he peers ahead, staring at nothing in particular.

"Hmmm,... On the paraelemental Plane of Mineral,... traveling along the border of ''Radiance and Mineral',... I'd have to consult the library charts to be certain, but knowing that paraelemental planes are actually where the edges of other, major planes intersect, It sounds like the paraelemental plane of Mineral is bordered on at least one side by,... the Positive Energy plane?!? There must be something that can only be found in that area that this 'Pando' desires. Seems we may have to go and ask Pando what it is ourselves. or perhaps these Earthborn know of it and can tell us.?"

Justin's eyes focus and he waggles the small notebook with a grin.
"Still. Progress! And still doesn't sound too terribly difficult. Quite TAME compared to some of the things we've seen lately, actually. A bit more walking than I'd planned perhaps. But what else are magic boots for?!?" He asks with a smirk.

"I do not like this."
