Well guys, it looks like we might be facing a TPK due to bad rolls and a cruel DM (and no fault of yours). I'm all for letting the dice fall where they may, but I do like your characters.
I'm feeling a little worn right now, so I'm thinking of letting it drop if we do TPK, but I want to be fair to you. Are you stoked to push on? In that case, maybe we should get some reinforcements.
Of course, if you do manage to survive on your own, I am not going to drop the game. Just checking.
And Shisumo, you know that you will always have a spot should you manage to persuade yourself. :)

I'm enjoying the game, but a little disappointed in the way the encounters happen. Yurggen is designed to dish out a little damage (Bombs Away!) before the critters close on us, and every time so far we've been in melee before things even got started. The Lion is not an impossible foe, if we can use strategy to defeat it, but it closed and killed before we even knew it was there. No problem with this kind of campaign, but if it's going to me a mostly melee campaign, I would have definitely done a different type of character. Maybe a Barbarian, Ranger, or Fighter with tons of Perception :-). Anyway I'd like to go on if we live, and if not...well that's up to you.

First: scranford, you have a valid point that you should have gotten Perception checks to hear the lion approaching. I just got a bit impatient and wanted to kickstart the game, so I let the lion start its round at the corner. Since it beat your initiative it got in your midst on a single move. I will be more scrupulous about giving you a chance to react in the future.
Second: I don't like to TPK unless the party has made a tactical mistake. In this case the lion was a bit tough to spring upon you like that, but it is sometimes hard to calibrate opposition. I find Pathfinder characters a bit tough to challenge, especially in a large party, and i overegged the pudding, I'm afraid.
Third: As to burnout, I kind of have good and bad days (or sometimes weeks) but I'm not giving up on the game yet. I do run three PBPs and I will have to confess that this one (as the newest) isn't my top priority, but that is mainly because the other two games have just blown me away (as this game may yet do - we'll see about that). Please have patience and we'll have this game rolling again. I'll recruit a new player to add a little new zest (and some firepower if you're going after the lions).
Thanks for playing. You all get a hero point to use the next time I try to kill you all.

Scanford , you are going to have problems then. I think this is mainly a dungeon crawl so the monsters are often one move away which does not give many time for missile weapons. This did not deter me from creating an archer cleric anyway but I intend to take the feats to fire in melee
If bombs have splattter damage you risk having unhappy ex friends ...
Otherwise , I'm quite happy to continue and we are going to shine so much that BT will have to drop the one PBP I am not in ...

I consider them challenges not problems... :-)
Phinn |
Phinn (aka McFetus) is ready. I've not yet got a description or background up but I have them worked out in my mind. Will post tomorrow, or rather, later, as it's 4.30 am here.
Phinn |
To recap: 20 point build; start at 1st level with max hp; avg. starting gold or roll; 1 hero point.
If I've not missed anything, Phinn is done so whenever you're ready, DM. :)
(Has Phinn earned any XP to date?)
Can someone give me a brief rundown of the house-rules? I've read the 3 forums but may have missed something.
What skills can I take 10/20 on?
What is/are 'points-of-light'?
Incidentally, where's everyone based? Me = Manchester, UK.
Black Tom |
Phinn:
It seems that a horrific and deadly plague currently moves through many of the orc tribes, leaving many dead in its wake. Orc shamans tell of a similar occurrence centuries ago, and that a cure was found deep in Dragon's Delve.
The cure is said to be on a level of the dungeon known as the Labyrinth of the Worm, and it is the powder of a violet-tinted herb called Saddosh. Saddosh no longer grows anywhere in the world, but if some of it is recovered, the orcish shamans can replicate it.
"Points-of-light" is meant to describe the setting. It means that large parts of the world is dominated by monsters or evil kingdom and that the areas of law and good are like points of light in a greater darkness.
Apart from hero points I try to avoid house-rules. Of course there will be interpretations and certain things may be banned, but I try to run the game as written (at least until I get to fully understand it).
You start with half the xp of the most experienced character (which would be Kwin or Kaduk). Incidentally that goes for the rest of you too, so you should be able to calculate (or approximate) your xp total if you go back. We're using medium progression.
Kwin Avassar |
Kwin is at 1241 experience points.

Breakdown:
133 Wolf
277 Mixed Humanoids
89 Mixed Humanoids
280 Mixed Humanoids
150 ghast
80 ghoul
120 bats
80 spider
32 lion
Kaduk, are you still tracking the treasure/gear we have found? I'm not showing where Kwin has taken a disbursement yet. He does have sunrods and tindertwigs that we found along the way though.
Shisumo |
And Shisumo, you know that you will always have a spot should you manage to persuade yourself. :)
Isn't tempting people the exact opposite of what you are supposed to do?
sigh... I'll keep an eye on the thread. If/when you have another opening... well. We'll see. ;)

Yeah, you do need to be careful when ascribing actions and sentiments to other characters (including, to a certain extent, NPCs ). Generally it's a good idea to mimic the style of the other players.
I meant this game to be rather a lighthearted hack-and-slash game, but then you as players are welcome to add some depth to it. Just mind that you get along and match each other so that everybody gets their chance to shine.
Shisumo |
Looking over your group, I'm seeing an elf paladin, an elf cleric, a halfling transmuter, a half-orc rogue and a dwarf alchemist. It would seem that you could either use another serious beatstick (I know how you roll, BT! heh) or perhaps a bard, for general buffing. If you have any particular suggestion or requirement for an appropriate class, I can work with whatever you need.

Makedonia: You are definitely Tharbrian (the barbarian culture from the West). In game terms that means basically only that your native language is Tharbrian, which means that you have to spend a language slot to learn Common. Hope that's OK.
Makedonia:
Makedonia |
BT:
I'd rather have Makedonia be a human raised in a secluded environment if possible - the main issue is that I want her to seem very different from other, known cultures.
Makedonia's alignment is closest to neutral I think.
Regarding a plot hook - I'd rather reveal this slowly and with more details to the other players, but basically she is on a quest to find a magic item in the dungeon (a witch item - staff or something similar) and to bring it back to her mentor. Fulfilling this quest will make her count as a full member of her community, together with a strong feeling of self-value.

Makedonia:
You also get a hero point for a useful background. I'll get back to you with some more detail later.
Kwin Avassar |
With this most recent xp award, Kwin is now over the 2000 mark needed for second level. How do you handle that in your game? Does he see the benefits immediately? After resting? After returning to town?
