An Occult Adventures Playtest for Level 8

Maps
The Contemptible Crypts

When I lived, all I required of Pathfinders like you was that you surrender your prize. Now I also require that you surrender your life...

Through invitations, audiences and no small amount of bribery, you find yourselves at the imposing doors of the Contemptible Crypts in the Necropolis of the Faithful at Sothis...a papyrus scroll in your hand hints of an ancient Artifact hidden within the tombs...

.......….............

I am looking to run a PBP playtest of the Occult Adventures classes - I have invited a few people from my existing games and have at least two players but I would like a party of four to have a bit of fun exploring these new classes...

...there isn't any need to create a huge backstory for your character, just as much as makes it fun for you...

Note that, as it is a tomb that you are headed into, the encounters are likely to be a little undead heavy!!!

The ‘Crunch’

Occult Adventures Playtest classes / Level 8
20 point ability buy.
Maximum HP for your class at level 1, level increases in HP up to level 8 average for class rounded up
Core races AND Featured races from the Advanced Race Guide are acceptable (Uncommon races and Custom races will not be considered).
Two traits maybe selected
Starting gold: 33,000 GP
Non-evil alignments only.
All character options must originate from Paizo published Pathfinder products; No 3rd Party Materials.
Recruitment will be open for a week, during which time I will try and answer any questions, with an expected close date of 7th November, Midnight GMT. I will make my selection over the following weekend and look to start the adventure on the 10th November.

The selected persons must be able to commit to posting at least once per day during the week.

If I have four good applications, I may close recruitment early....

If I play an occultist can I start with an undead minion?

Hi, Zed! Like I said in the PM, I'd like to try an occultist. I'll work up the stats today, but I'm thinking of a monster hunter character, kind of like Dr. Van Helsing from the original Dracula novel.

I want to blow things up with the power of my mind -"Accepted"

All - Haladir and Vrog are from my existing games and have suggested they would like to play as an Occultist and a Kineticist respectively...I have no big issues with having duplicate classes in this test....but it may be more fun if you try a different class...

Nohwear - unless it's a class feature / something you'd really like to try out, I'd prefer to keep away from minions, mounts, cohorts, companions, etc

Dark Archive

Hmmm, since we already have an occultist (seems popular that one) I'd be interested in trying a Medium, possibly a Pahmet Dwarf.

Haladir, Vrog, Spinning Dice - have you been able to get some thoughts together on your characters?

...also, shameless bump!!!!

I'll have him up by cob today.

Scarab Sages

I can have a character posted later today. Is anyone making a kineticist yet?

The weekend was weird and I ended up not having time to work on a character, so let me paint in broad strokes...

I'm thinking of an expert on fighting monsters, who uses lore and talismans as his part of his arsenal. I want to somehow work into the character that fighting monsters over the years has taken its toll on him.

The concept is a human male-- possibly older. I want the "been there, done that" attitude.

Normally, I flesh out the concept more before I start looking at mechanics, but since this is primarily a playtest of the mechanics, that will have to do. So far, I've only skimmed the psychic classes, and Occultist was what jumped out to me for a character like this.

I am hoping to do a deeper read of the class within the next couple of days and to get a statblock up here Tuesday or Wednesday.

Dark Archive

Dwarf wasn't working out how I liked, new concept. Voodoo Priestess medium (sorta).
Mechanics-wise really jumping on the generalist idea, fairly average stats in everything bar Cha.

Dark Archive

Still working on it, any objection to a familiar?

No huge objection to a familiar if it helps out with a class feature / way you think you might like to play a class...

Most of the bases covered on this profile, still need to do gear and totalling up numbers.

I'll admit I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing with Medium, it's a weird one to get your head around.

Aaaand, should be updated now.
Needs background, but the crunch should all be there.

Final call to see if anyone else wants in on my Occult Adventures playtest

So far we have:

An Air Kineticist played by Vrog Skyreaver (from my Wardens of the Reborn Forge game)
An Occultist played by Haladir (from my Shattered Star game)
A Medium played by Spinning Dice (from my Stirrings in the Deep game)

I will run the game with three but if a fourth person wants to jump on board, they’re more than welcome.

It may be worth opening up to non-occult characters for the 4th, give a 'control' character?

also, and I wasn't sure one way or the other, do we have anyone who can trapfind or heal? If not, I can modify my submission to do the later. Since we're going into an Osiriani tomb, we probably want the former.

Scarab Sages

I have a Mesmerist I would like to submit, Sir Alfred Stone. I just need to finish equipment and spell selection.

actually, let me go ahead and change from air to water. I'll get him reposted, that way even if someone else can heal I can backup heal.

Sir Alfred Stone

If anyone has suggestions before we start, go for it. I have not spent the time reviewing Mesmerist that I have spent on Kineticist, Occultist or Medium.

One interesting note: Hideous Laughter is a first level spell for Mesmerist: I took it as a wand.

This week has been a whole lot busier than I expected. I'm hoping to have a couple of hours tonight to really chew over the Occultist class and put together a character.

I tried jumping in and putting together a character on my lunch hour today, but the rules for this class seem to be very, very complex. It's much more compicated than the core classes (which is still what I tend to run.)

The complexity of this class would be my first critique of the Occultist: you have to read a LOT of text to even begin to get an idea of what this class is all about. Honestly, I'm finding the complexity of the rules for this class to be rather off-putting.

I like the idea of this class: drawing power from psychic connections to objects. So far, however, I'm not liking the implementation-- the rules are making my head spin!

(Let me put my biases on the table: What attracts me to RPGs is the improvisational collective storytelling experience. I find the fiddly bits of "building" a character to be the least fun part of any RPG.)

So, hopefully I'll get a chance to put together a rough cut of the character tonight.

if you want help building one with a breakdown of the mechanics, let me know and I can try my hand at it.

I had a few things blow up in my personal life this week, and was not able to have time for much gaming stuff at all. (What time I did have, I needed to spend on my IRL campaign that I run Monday nights.)

At this point, I'm not going to have time to put together an 8th-level character without Hero Lab's assistance for the next week or so.

I think I'll have to bow out of this playtest.

Dark Archive

I would like to participate with this character! He's currently level 3, but I will bump him up to 8 for the game. Are you still accepting applicants?

He will be a 7th-level Mesmerist with one level of Swashbuckler, and will be a swordsman who mixes up his melee prowess with powerful mental abilities.

Okay, it looks like the final roster is:

Camel, Half-Orc Kineticist played by Vrog Skyreaver
Akadi Tana, Human Medium played by Spinning Dice
Sir Alfred Stone, Human Mesmerist played by Michael Sumrall
Ezekiel Todd, Human Swashbuckler / Mesmerist played by The Morphling

I will connect Gameplay and Discussion Threads this weekend - please make aliases / tidy up characters as required...thanks for joining me on this fun little adventure...
