This is not an open invite. Please refrain from posting if you're not a one of the people on the list.

All right, I have contacted a number of you for an interest check to be able to play "The Harrowing" via online play-by-post.

I'm looking for a group of four people, so unfortunately I won't be able to play with every one of you. This is too bad, coz I chose you guys because you fit into the group of people that has epic roleplay moments, and posts on a regular basis. And you don't use a single line-post :)

I'm not completely sure who exactly will want to play and who won't, so please post here. We can work out details and background and all that, before going on our crazy adventure.

This is the list of alternate personae I asked, with their "mains". Please post with what you have in mind (character concept/ background/ ...).

  • Zander Drax (Mezegis)
  • Jirani Kafr Abdu (jamie noone)
  • Ethan Sower (Cuchulainn)
  • Skaldi the Tallest (twilsemail)
  • Horatius Lartius (Bali)
  • Theor Garess (Dakcenturi)

Kind regards,

Rick
aka Voice In The Sky

I am pretty easy going, and will play just abotu any class. I'm one of those that has 2-3 concepts for just about everything, and not enough time to play any/all of them.

If I had my druthers, I'd play a Zen Archer or Combat Patrol Polearm Warrior.

Also, Twilsemail, did you play on Enworld a few years back, in a Living Eberron game? I was playing a half-orc Ranger, Ryda and there was someone that had a very similar username as yours. He played a rogue that got KO'd provoking like 5 AoO's in a fight. May be wrong, getting senile in my old age.

Greetings and Salutations all. I'm tossing out a warning before I pitch interesting characters with fun character flaws.

I've lost my methods of accessing the internet outside of work. My comupter died a nasty death and, shortly afterward, my kindle exploded. Thankfully, that last one didn't happen while it was in my lap.

The kindle will be replaced eventually. The computer will be repaired, but probably not 'til September or so. I spend 9-10 hours a day on the computer at work and just don't feel like getting back on when I'm home.

That said, I'm on for 9-10 hours a day at work and can post the whole time I'm here. I've no issue with being botted by the Gm should the need arise.

What should I know about "The Harrowing" while I wait to see if my future post ability affects anyone's willingness to have me on board?

That was me Mezegis. Good to see you. I'm pretty sure that was a changeling PC, wasn't it?

Your computer issues don't bother me any. You'll be able to post a few times in the 9-10 hours, which is a fine pace for me.

I'm East Coast US, and can post very frequently. I can post at work, and leave a window up on my home PC to refresh my campaign page every so often.

I play a lot of Divine characters, which seem to always be shunned, so if need be, I can drop my desire for the ZA or CPPF and play a cleric or oracle.

EDI: Yep, and hello again, long time no see. Small world to find ourselves back together after all this time.

Checking in. I'm kinda the same way with having multiple ideas I'd like to try. I prefer characters with modest backgrounds, but starting at 9th level throws that out the window. Rickmeister, any hooks you can give us to help our character background? Were we called to the adventure on purpose or do we happen on it by coincidence?

A couple concepts I'd like to try at 9th level:

oracle/barbarian
sorcerer (never played one past 3rd level, really)
TWF (rogue/fighter or urban ranger - check its viability at a higher level, because the one I'm playing in CotCT sucks at 4th level)

Yeah, I seem to remember loving Ryda. I'm looking forward to the chance to play with you again.

Re: Divine PCs - I've actaully got a Healer / divine PC cooking, so if I'm around, you can keep your original PC idea around.

Oh, and I'll whole-heartedly admit to needing a hand with equipment. My system mastery for Pathfinder took a back seat to world building in a few other games I'm in, also system mastery of L5R, which I play at an actaul table and need to act as a reference book for others.

My character concepts would be either:
Paladin / Oracle of Life

or

Bardy type guy. Maybe some kind of herald.

The First concept is the one I'd prefer, but I'm not married to it.

As far as the first concept goes, a lot changes if you are Paladin 8/oracle 1 or Paladin 2/Oracle 7

Either way, it sounds like you've have the support niche pretty well covered.

Rick, since we are doing this as test subjects for your home game, besides the hooks Jamie mentions, are there any classes you'd like us to test the waters on that you have in the home game?

My Zen Archer would be pretty standard mechanics wise, but he'd have both stealth and disable devices to cover for a lack of skill monkey/scout type if needed. The Fighter would be combat patrolling and getting 2-3 AoO's a turn, plus his normal attacks

The concept is a failed, but not fallen paladin of Sarenrae. Paladin 2 / Oracle 7. THe curse would be the burn-scarred one that I can't remember the actual name or mechanics of... aside from it meaning she can't hold a weapon anymore.

The bard would be fairly run of the mill bard / herald. Flagbearer feat with the cool magic flag that plays off that feat. I've got it in my notes somewhere. Originally he'd've been from Taldor, but I think I can rewrite him to be from somewhere a bit closer to home.

The group I'm going to run it for has a Greatsword specialized fighter, and a bard (Arcane Duelist).

As far as background goes:
Mithurdane has lived through 10 years and multiple spoiler alerts later, is found at level 10 right after a certain barbarian got angry and lost his head. (wink)

You will part of either

  • "The Rhino", a mercenary company known for accepting anyone that can fight, and is willing to listen to their leader. Perfect for bards, rangers, druids, rogues,... just about anything.
  • "The Iron Fist", a mercenary company known for strictness and walking between the lines that the "Wolf" dictates. She doesn't stand slacking off. Perfect for fighter, cavaliers, (lawful) clerics and paladins.
  • "The Whitecloaks / Redcloaks", the standing army of Mithurdane. They wear the white side out when it's peace time, and the red side out when trouble is a-stirring.
  • The mages guild, studying under Anton Nortfeldson.
  • The monk's temple.

We can work your background in with little trouble, no worries. I usually take BGs, and edit them with appropriate names, places, etc.

Also keep in mind I'm only allowing the APG and the CRB, when making your decisions.

  • Liberty's Edge

Hmm. I'm intrigued. I will try to come up with an interesting concept as soon as possible.

Don't wait on my account, though, if everyone else comes up with the party you want first.

    Rickmeister wrote:

Hmm... In that case I'm going to scrap the above concept and see what might come up in my brain...

I may actaully take a back seat in case others have solid concepts using only those sources.

    Pathfinder Rulebook Subscriber

Howdy all. Thought I'd drop a note to say what many of you have...interested, working on a concept. My thought now is to go with a Wizard. Working out the details.

Do you want full crunch from the get go, or just a concept and background first, and we can deal with the crunch later?

*Frown* Man... I keep thinking "I know, I'll try X. THat really caught my eye." Then it turns out that X is in UC or UM or some other book. Stupid brain. Remember APG things.

I think that my most appealing option is someone tied to the divine and very young and naive. Hospitaler Paladin or Oracle of Life come immediately to mind. I'd have to see what else is running around, first.

It looks like the ZA would be best, since he can double as a scout. I'm working on his concept now, but I'm thinking of a wayward youth given a second chance, and is now trying to find a good location for a YMCA/boys and girls club kinda place.

Wayward youth / young ones / etc is perfect, becuase the duke himself is a bastard, so he really has a thing for helping to raise the young ones without a decent home. So much he actually has kinda enforced "schools" etc.

Families get paid if their children come to school/training/wizard's academy. :)

Here's a rough plan that I tossed together while at lunch for a Zen Archer.

History: Ro was born to a small farming family on the outskirts of Brevoy. When he was 6, the summer was particularly harsh and dry, and the fields were caught in a fire caused by some pyromaniac goblins. His father fought the fire as best he could, but collapsed from exhaustion and died in the fields. His mother, broken by the loss of her husband, lost control of her son and Ro began to do whatever he wanted with little consequences. Soon, he joined a gang of children and was well on his way to a life of crime. One day he picked the wrong mark, and was discovered, but instead of turning him in, the man offered him a better life at a southern monastery. Given the choice between monkhood and prison, Ro took to the life of a monk with the gusto of child being told to eat their Brussel sprouts. Even with his lackluster initial opinion, Ro completed his initial training quick quickly, and was a natural with the bow. Eventually, he came to accept his new life, end even began to enjoy it. After years of training, he even surpassed his teachers in certain aspects, and knew his training was at an end. Now, Ro has set out, into the Stolen Lands, in hopes of obtaining land of his own, to start his own monastery and pay forward the gift of a new life given to him so many years ago.

PersonalityRo is quick to try and see the good side of things, knowing people can change. He is patient to a fault, and never shows anger, except toward those of the goblinoid races, whom he still hates for the death of his father. He is generally good natured, and loves the sound of children laughing. He drinks naught but water, and frequently meditates to maintain his inner focus and outward calm.

    C&C welcome

1: Would you mind if it was the outskirts of one of Mithurdane's cities? Newbridge for example.

2: Perfect. You will have been initiated into the monasteries at the official edict by Baron (now Duke) Solovei Borga. If you want, you can even have him been the wrong target?

3: Land of his own would be nice, if we were to play Kingmaker and we started at level 1. :)
Maybe fame for this unorthodox fighting style? Monk with a bow, that's a bit odd, you see! :)

4: Any particular traits you had in mind?

1: OK, I thought you had said the game was being tied into your Kingmaker table game, which is why I went with Brevoy. Newbridge is fine.

2: Cool, interesting idea about the Baron, I'll mull that over

3: Again, I was trying to link it with Kingmaker. Fame and honor to his monastary and mother is fine

4: Vagabond child: urban for Disable Device as a class skill and Reactionary. Both reflect his up bringing on the streets before he joined the monastary.

*shakes fist at Ultimate Magic and the Cloistered Cleric*

I'm set on taking a healing role if that's what folks are looking for. I'm going to hold off on mechanics until we've got a better idea what's coming in.

In general, the PC has spent his time living in the monks' temple. Part of me wants to make him an anchorite that's been forced out, but I don't think that'd work out immensely well.

Likely background: Orphan that was taken in by the monks. Currently leaning Haunted Oracle, so his village was wiped out by plague. He was patient Zero and several spirits follow him around, haunting him.

I might alternately go Cleric or Hospitaler, depending on what the party needs.

Cleric of Irori fit well with monks, that whole unarmed fighting/self perfection thing.

I like the haunted Oracle (of life?) idea. I have a similar concept for a oracle drawn up in my files, but as a survivor of a natural disaster.

Just play what you want Skaldi :)
It's nice to have a teamplayer, but you don't have to get permission to play a concept you want, right?

It's interesting to see the concepts guys. Knock my socks off why don't you :-p

I'm brewing up a new concept, but if we really need a frontliner or we really need a controller, I'm happy to deviate from that setup.

I'm looking now at what kind of oracle might've come from a temple to Irori. Lore might work over Life.

    Ew...

    Both fine with me.

To make it easier, you do not know eachother unless you want to :-)

I keep refreshing this page every fifteen minutes :D

I'm not quite that bad, but I still check ever hour or so.

Rick, do you want me to work on the crunch for the Zen Archer from earlier, including the final background?

    *pouty face which resembles Jigglypuff*

Arite, who wants Mezegis place?!?! ;)

Can I get back in if I give you a microphone pen? :D

    Aaaaaaaand you're back in... :-p

If you make it a LASER!! XD

    Hyperbeam tm good enough?

    This? :-p

Also: can't wait to begin! :D

    Feats:
    -------------------------- Feats ---------------------------
    Alertness
You get a +2 bonus on Perception and Sense Motive skill checks. If you have 10 or more ranks in one of these skills, the bonus increases to +4 for that skill.

    Deadly Aim
You can choose to take a -2 penalty on all ranged attack rolls to gain a +4 bonus on all ranged damage rolls. You must choose to use this feat before making an attack roll and its effects last until your next turn. The bonus damage does not apply to touch attacks or effects that do not deal hit point damage.

    Dodge
You gain a +1 dodge bonus to your AC. A condition that makes you lose your Dex bonus to AC also makes you lose the benefits of this feat.

    Improved Initiative
You get a +4 bonus on initiative checks.

    Toughness
    You gain +9 hit points.

    Vital Strike

    Improved Unarmed Strike
You are considered to be armed even when unarmed-you do not provoke attacks of opportunity when you attack foes while unarmed. Your unarmed strikes can deal lethal or nonlethal damage, at your choice.

    Perfect Strike
You must declare that you are using this feat before you make your attack roll (thus a failed attack roll ruins the attempt). You must use one of the following weapons to make the attack: kama, nunchaku, quarterstaff, sai, and siangham. You can roll your attack roll twice and take the higher result. If one of these rolls is a critical threat, the other roll is used as your confirmation roll (your choice if they are both critical threats). You may attempt a perfect attack once per day for every four levels you have attained (but see Special), and no more than once per round.

    Point Blank Master
Choose one type of ranged weapon. You do not provoke attacks of opportunity when firing the selected weapon while threatened.

    Weapon Focus (Longbow)
You gain a +1 bonus on all attack rolls you make using the selected weapon.

    Weapon Specialization (Longbow)
    Improved Precise Shot
Your ranged attacks ignore the AC bonus granted to targets by anything less than total cover, and the miss chance granted to targets by anything less than total concealment. Total cover and total concealment provide their normal benefits against your ranged attacks.

    Point-Blank Shot
You get a +1 bonus on attack and damage rolls with ranged weapons at ranges of up to 30 feet.

So I'm thinking [character] was a member of an adventuring group that had some measure of success and fame, and then he/she split from the group when his/her romantic involvement with another member of the group ended badly. After leaving, the group went on to become even more successful and famous, and [character] pretty much just bounced around, having a hard time finding other adventurers with his/her level of experience. Frustrated and bitter, he/she ended up just falling in with the Rhino or the Whitecloaks.

I haven't decided if he/she is from a small town in the area, come home to lick his/her wounds, or from a big city far off, come here to hide away. It's pretty much wide open as far as character class/role goes, as am I.

    Scarab Sages

Hi all checking in. Had a busy day of prep for my live game this evening so please excuse the delay. Still fleshing things out but I will likely play a sorc/DD unless there is a specific need for something else.

He/she wil be a traveling merchant. Likely of Kelish, Varisian or Garundi dissent. He/she has always had a love for history and as such, whenever possible, aside from merchanting, would find ways to explore any mysteries or adventures. He/she has always had a thing for fire but only recently, with the more apparent immersion of his/her draconian bloodline, has started to really understand his/her self and powers.

Jamie, going martial then? Or something with a little funk like Arcane duelist (bard)?
Sounds really nice, and fits nicely with the Rhino /Whitecloaks.
Also, can you perfect strike with a bow?

Dak: interesting that you chose DD. Will be interesting to see the crunch

All: if you make the character using herolab, I don't mind receiving a copy :-)

    Rickmeister wrote:
Also, can you perfect strike with a bow?

Considering it is the very first ability you get on Zen Archer at level 1, I believe so. It replaced stunning fist.

Yeah, I'm leaning toward barbarian, since everyone else is caster or archer. Afraid I don't do herolab, but I'll try to get the crunch done this evening (I'll be afk during most of work today) and put in a new/recycled alias. For hit points for levels 2-9, are we rolling, or doing PFS rules?

Someone else already asked me that, but silly me answered in pm instead of here.
    I'd go with my rule:
First level max, second through nineth level you roll 2 dice, and may take the highest. Rolling can de done here ofc :-)

No herolab, no problem. I just mentioned it for those who actually have it :-)

    Perfect strike: makes sense :-)

How are we doing Stat generation?

    20 point buy

    since we're rolling for HP:

    level 2: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 91d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
    level 3: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 81d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
    level 4: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 21d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
    level 5: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 21d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
    level 6: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 21d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
    level 7: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 81d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
    level 8: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 21d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
    level 9: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 41d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

I originally calculated it PFS style, so he gained 5+1 HP per level, across 8 levels is 48.

    9, 8, 3, 5, 4, 8, 6, 4= 47 so net loss of 1 HP via rolling >.<

9 from first level, +47 from dice, +9 from toughness, +5 from favor class= 70 hp total, and 1 extra Ki point from the remaining 4 favored class options

    Twenty point buy indeed Skaldi.

And you'll seee Mezegis, that one hitpoint will be the end of you ;)

Well, hopefully with an AC in the high twenties and being an archer, I won't be hit too often. Although, since I threaten in melee with a bow, and do not provoke AoO's while firing engaged, I can double as a flanking buddy if need be.

Alright! I've got a concept I like now. I think, mechanically, he works really well as a Hospitaler Paladin 5/ Holy Vindicator 4.

Does anyone really object to the idea?

He's going to be a penitent dedicated to Irori. Wears a Cilice (I can burn some gold on the item even though I'm pretty sure it's not listed in our two source books).

Looking at the personality, Cleric may work out better. Wearing a cilice and acting all penitent seems more wise than charming...

Edit: Yes. I know. Charisma =/= Nice. I'm probably going with that concept. I'll have some crunch coming out in a bit.

    @GM: Thoughts on Leadership?

Really hesitant on allowing the leadership feat.
If we were playing Kingmaker ourselves, no problem, but right now I'm thinking no..
    ..
    ..
Unleeesssss you can give me a really good idea/background/... ;)
    ..
    But REALLY good! ;)

Also: Leadership means that you choose from "support, melee, ranged, caster" and I create the character. Want to risk it? :p

I wouldn't have it any other way.

I'd actually figured I'd write out my history and see if you had a follower that fit the PC. As a paladin, I'd be required to have someone LG. I could leave a few hooks in there and see if you decide someone's coming with me or if I'm taking "Extra Channel."

If you'd rather not, I understand.

Note: I really had to talk myself out of playing a Summoner with some healing ability. I love that class way too much.

Some day I might even play one with some degree of optimization...

Am I the only person who's never brought any of their followers on an adventure? I've taken leadership quite a bit, but it's always been because I'm running a business or starting a church/monastary/guild.

Nah. I've done the same in Kingmaker. Which was actually the only time I used somethng mechanical to have a follower. Most are granted through RP.
