PFC King's to hit modifiers :
1) Weapon Accuracy : 0 (no aim maneuver)
2) Size Modifier : +2 (creature is +2 SM)
3) Target's Range and Speed : 23.57 yards (50 ft up and 50 over) + creature speed 12.5 yard/sec (25 mph) + humvee speed 17.5 yard/sec (35 mph) = 53.57, per chart, -8
4) RoF (Assume full auto) 12 grants a +2 to hit
5) Assume all out attack +1 to hit
6) Vehicle off road, -1 to hit while in stabilized weapon mount
Skill : 15 +2 -8 +2 +1 -1 = 15 - 4 = 11.
Assuming the driver for the second jeep makes their driving rolls (they haven't made them yet), then PFC King hits with a 9. Her weapon's recoil is 2, so she gets one hit for 11, and one hit for 9 (11-2 = 9). If she'd rolled a 7, she'd have gotten 3 hits. You do not roll one attack per ROF, you roll one attack for all the rounds you fire!
So PFC king will roll twice to damage, if the HV is not crashing of course.

PFC Svennson has the following modifiers :
1) Weapon Accuracy : 4+1 (Aimed 2 seconds/2 rounds)
2) Size Modifier : +2 (creature is +2 SM)
3) Target's Range and Speed : 23.57 yards (50 ft up and 50 over) + creature speed 12.5 yard/sec (25 mph) + humvee speed 17.5 yard/sec (35 mph) = 53.57, per chart, -8
4) RoF 5 grants a +1 to hit
5) Assume all out attack +1 to hit
6) Vehicle off road, -4 to hit while holding weapon
Skill : 10 +4 +1 -8 +1 +1 -4 : 5 or less to hit
So, on round 3, PFC Svennson will miss (unless the HV comes to a halt).

mdt |

So, critical hits :
If you roll a 3 or a 4 (or a 5 if you're skill is 15+) then you get a Critical Hit. In a full auto fire, only your first round is a critical hit. You then roll 3d6 on the Critical Hit Table. The rest of the rounds hit normally. A critical hit can't be dodged or parried or blocked.
For example... Critical hit: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 6) = 12
Normal damage, and the victim drops anything he is holding, regardless of whether any damage penetrates DR.

I sent the radio call for flak guns through the cpl because I think it's considered bad form for a pfc to bypass his immediate chain of command?

mdt |

Proper form would be : Suggest to Commander. Commander agrees, tells Comm officer to radio in the request.
Whether that request makes it through or not is a good question, given the restrictions of the tunnel, and all the metal inside it transiting that will block the signal.

Things exploded when you go to sleep, I have 35 posts to read through now.

Dawn Svenssen |

Were we issued standard sights with the rifles? Or are we using iron sights?
Collimating sight is +1 skill, thermal is +2 acc with infrared. While we know some of the aliens are coldblooded, the humans aren't kinda doubt the fire breathing dragons are.

mdt |

Standard Rifles, other than the sniper's sniper rifle.
They promised they'd get you electronic sights ASAP, but currently no.
Due to a treaty, CA has to pay for this out of state funds. They are borrowing money to do it (with very very generous interest rates from the Govt), but it's still expensive.

Dawn Svenssen |

the valley, with the portal, their defensive works and where we are in relation would be kinda nice.

mdt |

Yes, you'll get that when you need it. RIght now, it's more mind theatre than anything else. There's no one left to fight, and it's more about you RP'ing with each other, helping injured people, searching the downed enemies, etc. I can go ahead and say you're not going to get attacked any time soon. The explosion scared off all the wild life, and all the enemy fighters are terrified and running as hard as they can.

mdt |

As a note to everyone, since it is coming up.
Please use one of these two formats for rolling dice :
If you were rolling Basket Weaving, and you had a skill of 13, then you'd roll either
Basket Weaving 13: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 3) = 9
OR
Basket Weaving: 13 - 3d6 ⇒ 13 - (6, 1, 6) = 0
If you don't include the level, I have to go look it up to see how much you made it by. I have a slight preference for #2 as I don't need to do any math but I can live with #1. If I give you modifiers, add those like this :
+2 Bonus
-1 Penalty
Basket Weaving 13: 3d6 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (5, 5, 5) - 2 + 1 = 14
OR
Basket Weaving: 13 - 3d6 + 2 - 1 ⇒ 13 - (5, 5, 4) + 2 - 1 = 0
This is why I have a slight preference for #2 as a 'Bonus' is added and a 'Penalty' is subtracted, which is more intuitive.

I will try and remember that as much as possible.

You could also go look and see if modern first aid kits have baking soda in them. Seeing as all the gear we currently have actually exists.

ENS Andy Hudson |

It depends on the first aid kit purpose. The first aid kit in my lab doesn't have any, but my roommate's does, because it's an acids-included first aid kit. A hazmat or chemical spill kit might be placed next to the trauma kits, minor injury kits, burn kit and defibrillator on the humvee, although it depends on how we're set up. That said, if the dragon fire happened in CA, they probably know just what to pack, so all good.
(my point was just that in this case it's actually an important question).

Timm Tones |

Hey guys! With the issues of the forum and my current absolute lack of knowledge on Gurps, I think I will step out the game. I apologize. Have fun you all! mdt rocks as a GM, so I'm sure you'll be fine :)

Laine Horatio |

I suppose we are going to get the dragon packed, sealed and delivered back to earth.

mdt |

BTW: If you want to do anything while the base is being built, before the enemy arrives, feel free to post about it. You've got 60 days. I just wanted you to know you had 60 days before things went south again. We can pick up with the counter-attack after everyone is RP'd out on the dragon, it's rider, the base building, etc.
Things were a little sandboxy, and I wanted to give you some structure to RP around if you wanted to.

Dawn Svenssen |

yeah, sandbox is hard in a military campaign.
We;re basically just-dried-behind-the-ears. So we still have to ask to take a dump.
Our exemplary action in the opening scene gets us recognition, not sure if it would be enough to have us assigned on detached duty "do what you think needs to be done".
Now if you want to give us a topo map of the valley and surrounding area, we could "metagame" what we think the brass would order as defensive emplacements on that map. Not really using our characters, but it would be involving the players in designing a defensive set up.
With a small foothold force against an enemy of unknown size, we'd need to prioritize:
anti-air support. Probably radar guided chainguns. Missiles would be unreliable as we already know some creatures are cold blooded. I doubt they're naturally radar stealthy.
Mine fields along the likely approaches. Tearing down and rebuilding the walls to face the other way.
Pill boxes with machineguns.
Sniper towers.
Mortar pits.
barracks, medical, mess.

Daniel Rainwater |

My less than stellar understanding of the GURPS rules coupled with my lack of real modern military knowledge (learning from this though!) hampers my ability to take any specific actions except generic "helping". I already wrecked the vehicle despite being the best driver in the group. Based on the actual odds of driving out of the tunnel I predict that at least 8 vehicles would have crashed, blocking the tunnel. I do understand statistics and probability and can do that math. I bring this up because as Dawn points out we are pretty green, point wise and really lack the skills a PFC would really have, so that limits our options too. Plus our leader is an NPC and that limits initiative somewhat too.
Not complaining here but explaining.

Dawn Svenssen |

So we may end up with some action in this battle.
After that maybe they send a delegation.
Our brass meets with their brass.
As one of the few original intact units we get assigned as guards on a delegation of higher ranked, but still expendable brass/diplomats. To go meet someone else.
Ambushes by native fractions that want to sustain the war.
Contacts by native rebels that want our help in a coup.
Seduction by natives trying to get samples of our weapons.
Back-stab by the native leaders that allowed the delegation.
Etc.
Or we just continue with a military campaign of decimation of poorly armed natives aka the brits in africa.
