Bethany curses as Khellirin falls, putting her bartending (y)ears to good use as she spits out epithets in four different languages. Biting down on a particularly vile curse in orcish, she stands her ground and throws her trusty mug at the troll. Familiars are useless in combat, except as indicated by their abilities. Ordinarily they aren't damaged by enemy attacks and spells unless the story calls for it. If your familiar dies, it can come back to you the next time you get a full heal-up. (The method or story used is between you and the GM.) Alternatively, you can get a new familiar.

We're going to have some fun with this later. Feel free to continue to cast spells this encounter, it's time for Fortuna to learn that she's got some power herself.

Fortuna watches open-mouthed as her familiar's remains flutter to the cave floor, still magically alight. The electric feeling shooting through her might be joy or fear or a combination of both. She looks at the shortsword in her hand and the troll and orc looming over her and remembers her father's words. "When you're outmatched, get out of there! There's no glory in death, and we sure as heck can't afford resurrection."

Rob - maybe I'm just not understanding your damage tracking, but Khel and Beth both hit the troll, for 14 damage each, but his hp haven't gone down as you update the initiative. As the guy who likes to get critted by the huge creatures, having the troll's hp go down matters greatly to me.

On a related note - does the troll count as a giant? That's my favored enemy at the moment.

Tomb

The troll is indeed a giant. Something is screwy with it's HP... Let me see.. It was at 82, and then Beth hit for 9. dropping it to 73. Looks like I accidentally had the ongoing 5 drop it to 58 instead of 68. but then I didn't subtract either your 14 or Beth's new 14...

Math says troll HP is 40 hp and staggered. Thanks for the catch, I probably never would have noticed. If it lives for another round without getting killed I might actually get to use my cool regeneration.

PS. These giants are only large. I'm sure we'll eventually get to a huge one which counts as 3 monsters...

Hrarsk aims a last blow at the troll. As the troll falls to the ground, weary of the battle and wary of the spiders, Hrarsk takes a moment to heal Bethany again (cure wounds spell, free recovery) and rest himself (moving away from the battle in order to rally next turn).

Tomb

Bethany squishes a few spiders with her scimitar while Hrarsk drops the troll and heals Bethany.

Doug helps out against the spiders.

Melee: 1d20 + 6 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 6 + 5 = 17
Damage: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (5, 4) + 4 = 13

Squishing a few more and staggering the spider swarm.
3 spiders remain

Despite going down the troll's wounds close and the beast stands again and claws into Bethany once and Khel once.

claw vs Beth: 1d20 + 8 - 4 ⇒ (13) + 8 - 4 = 17
claw vs Khel: 1d20 + 8 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 8 - 4 = 14

Still reeling from the color spray it only connects with a single claw on Beth. It's bones are showing in many places though, it can't stand up to much more assault.

The spiders swarm over various people

target: 1d5 ⇒ 1
target: 1d5 ⇒ 2
target: 1d5 ⇒ 5

bite vs Doug: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Bite vs Beth: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Bite vs Troll: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

The spider poison begins coursing through doug's veins. 0 damage now, but 4 ongoing poison damage

Some of the spiders swarm over Beth and the Troll, but they have better luck.
