Would a fey form Spell be broken?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

In before there is one and I can't find it.

Anyway I dunno if they'd work the same way monstrous transformation works, perhaps they'd grant a Dex and Cha bonus or maybe a diminished strength bonus I don't know but I'm jus wondering why this spell doesn't exist and I realised it might be kind of useful. I made an Eldritch Knight that was Dex based and finding a good tiny form for the Dex boost on beast shape and monstrous transformation was a complete nightmare. If I could have turned into fey however it would have been easy.

Just flicking through bestiary 4 I found some interesting forms

Medium: Erlking, Leanan Sidhe, given it's normally the lowest level version of the spell that grants medium you'd be getting a 90ft fly speed.

Tiny: Pooka, the bonuses for being tiny is pretty strunk on top of that 60ft fly speed with perfect maneuverability and it can cast and it has telepathy not that the spell would be guaranteed to grant it. Not to mention the Dex boost.

Tooth Fairy: If you could get diminutive any Dex based build would love it pretty sure you don't provoke you get a huge AC bonus and a massive to hit bonus. And you can still cast and a fly speed to boost.

So yeah is there a reason turning fey isn't a thing and if it is how did I miss it xD.

Or maybe I'm the only one that fancys it who knows.

Fey are not easy to distinguish from regular creatures, so the spell progression would not be doing much to give "fey"-ness.

As to your assumption on the assorted creature's abilities and your acquisition of them, you need to remember that Fey Form I does not give you more than say 30' fly, so your Erlking with a 90' fly only can fly 30' with the spell. You need Fey Form III to get the full 90' fly. Same goes for different sizes and such.

Compare the various "X Form #" spells to each other and see how they parcel out the abilities. The main thing you really want are the SLAs, as regular critters can get just about everything else a fey critter has.

Don't forget, you can research new spells. Just work with your GM.

Good point about the limited fly speed from the spells, that is a shame .-.

I very much doubt that giving spell like abilities would ever be a thing given the amount of versatility the fey form spells would then grant, in terms of other spells you could get access to from beyond your own list.

I'm not bothered about researching the spell, I'm not even in a game at the moment .-. I'm just curious.

Well, I think in some ways it's because fey are often defined by having weird supernatural and spell-like abilities.

Full BAB: Constructs, dragons, magical beasts, monstrous humanoids, outsiders
3/4 BAB: Aberrations, animals, humanoids, oozes, plants, undead, vermin
1/2 BAB: Fey

As you can see, fey are the only type to get psychic/sorcerer/witch/wizard BAB, meaning that unlike many others, they are not really defined by the normal special attacks, but instead exotic defenses and unusual special attacks - such as spell-like abilities. Thematically, turning into a fey would probably be involved with gaining more magic...after all, turning into various big monsters grants you big monster abilities, turning into humanoids is hypothetically useful for infiltration and other such...

That's not to say I don't think it's not an interesting possibility, but I think it would have to be a bit on the exotic side. The more varied the abilities a creature type has, the more difficult it can be to make a spell that grants their abilities properly...even more so when those abilities are often supernatural and magical and not necessarily something you would normally associate as coming with just their shape.

Of course, there are other unrepresented types, such as aberrations, constructs, and oozes that I wouldn't mind seeing...and also cleaning up undead anatomy a bit...but I suspect those are the reasons why it doesn't exist as of now.

I'm going to FAQ this. It's the only way to be sure.
