You: A GM with a flexible or homebrew campaign, looking to add a little challenge and varied dynamic for your players.
Me: A player interested in creating a character, rooted deeply in your campaign, with his own motivations and objectives, that come into conflict with the path of your PCs.
The Antagonist: You can have as much or as little input/control as you like, and use the character for your own ends or let him/her/me run free in your campaign. (S)he can be a one-off villain, a recurring nuisance, a primary opponent, an unscrupulous rival, an occasional ally, or anything else we can dream up.
Why you should consider it: Instead of you, the GM, having to be a thousand different personas, I take care of some of it for you. I add an extra human dynamic without stealing the focus away from the real stars--your adventuring party. It gives your players something more substantial to chew on.
Why I'm considering it: I can get a taste of various story settings, sample your campaign, create a deep character, and step in and out as needed. It's an easier way to experience more campaigns and worlds without having to commit to being an active player all the way through. Like a sampler platter of play-by-posts.
So, what do you think? I look forward to hearing some feedback, even if you're not yourself interested in inviting an Antagonist into your campaign.

A brilliant idea and something I've thought of, but not had an opportunity to do. My campaign just started, so I don't have any uses for you yet, but just wanted to say hey. Maybe it will become a trend and we'll have a sticky thread of people willing to do cameos in other campaigns like the recruitment thread.

D-Kal, I have a long running campaign that could really benefit from what you propose. It's not homebrew, but it's a very flexible open sandbox. We are just easing back in and finding our feet again after a long break I had to take for mental health reasons.
This game was originally a part of an ambitious idea... several tables/parties, gaming in the same open sandbox, so that the effect of each on the setting could be felt by the others. In the end the other games in this experiment folded though, and only the first original group is together still and going strong.
It seems your proposal suits my original concept exceptionally well. Your character could be a common thread between the different groups/tables. The thought of it makes me almost want to give the multi-party sandbox idea another go, but I'm not sure I could handle it. It burned me out really bad last time I tried.
I do have the one game though. Feel free to take a look and see if the flavor of the setting and the way we post suits you. Likewise, are there any characters of yours or scenes you've been in that you feel highlight your style of posting? I'd like to read a bit and get a feel for how you write and what your preferred play style might be.

Ok yeah. The Crucible of Freya, that is the one. Sorry I forgot the name changed. Dunno why 3 marked active tho.
Anyway, so that's the game I'm running now. It used to be one of several tables playing in the same sandbox but I couldn't keep that going. Now it's just the one game.
We just started back up after a hiatus so we're still finding our feet. One story arc is kind of closing right now and the party is starting to chat about what to do next.
I think your idea is cool though. After things settle on a new course I wouldn't mind brainstorming about some way you could maybe pop in and interact with them.
