Any ideas to build a scary witch?

It's about time for halloween around these parts, and I want to make my first witch. Problem being, I can't really see how to build one that's able to use fear effects, or even really intimidate in general very effectively. Am I missing something? I can try out the stink eye hex, but it's not all there is, right?


Spells mainly. Witches have a bunch of them which either directly cause fear or which are indirectly scary in their effects. With those and the Bruising Intellect trait you should be scary enough.


Dark Sister archetype is a good start.

Or take the Nightmare patron.

Then go here to find all the fear spells a witch can use. Other enchantment and illusion spells (like phantasmal killer) could be good too.

EDIT: Although its not a very good archetype (you lose all your hexes) I can imagine a White-Haired Witch choking someone to death with their hair could be scary.


Is there any way to use these fear effects to effectively debuff? Only way I can think of is to make a poor-mans Frostbite Magus. Cause Fear for example. Not all that great because either the target makes the save, and I've wasted my turn... or they run away to probably come back with reinforcements. Is there something in the line of debuffs I can use general scariness to achieve?


If people running away is not something you consider useful then you're looking at the wrong condition for your debuffs. Still, there are witch spells which look like they act via fear but apply different conditions.

e.g. Take that nightmares patron. Oneiric Horror at 3rd is an effective debuff and Phantasmal Killer at 4th is a so-so save or die, both acting via fear but not using the conditions of fear. General witch spells include Ear-piercing Scream, a 1st level spell which dazes, Screech which triggers AoOs from surprise or fear, and spells like Phantasmal Asphyxiation and Howling Agony which are at least related to the concept.


i would actually use an orc witch with the pre erata racial archetype that uses con as their casting stat give them an 18 in str and con to start out with str gets boosted to 22 give it a falcion as orcs have proficiency with falcions and when the witch runs out of spells it can hold its own in melee it could have a few fear effects from spells but the main fear effect will be that the witch can hold its own in melee combat no problem
