I have a question regarding Archetypes as well as seeking a opinion.

Advice

This isn't directly 3rd party related but it would affect a third party class my next character might use, so i'll just through it out there.

I know when it comes to Archetypes unless the new feature says it replaces a feature from the original version, you pretty much get the new feature and the old feature right? Here's where im iffy and im seeking an opinion.

The Steelfist Commando archetype of the Warlord over at the pfsrd list that the Steelfist Commando gains a bonus combat feat at 1st, 6th and every 4 levels thereafter it doesn't say this replaces the normal bonus feats obtained a warlord at the same levels. So do i get 2 bonus feats at these levels now? The only difference I see is that the Steelfist Commando adds a extra stipulation that allows you to gain rogue talents and eventually advanced rogue talents later on down the line.

By RAW yes you get both, however if you are getting an insane number of feats per level because of it I'd run it by my GM because it sounds like RAI is for those abilities not to stack

That's a good idea, ill do that as well.

Does it say it modifies? Because if it says it modifies the ability, you do not get both. This is quite common where an archetype is reducing an ability to give another ability a boost. For example many paladin archetypes modify smite evil to give less smites, but give a stronger ability for another power.

Steelfist Commando

Yeah so the archetype makes no mention that it replaces or modifies the original bonus feat ability... so it doesn't?

The "Unarmed Combat (Ex)" and "Powerful Pugilist (Ex)" abilities replaces the bonus feat gained at level 1 and 10, but if the archetype intended you to only get bonus feats at level 6, 14 and 18, why didn't it just say so in the "Bonus Feat" ability?

As it is, you're getting one Bonus feat at level 1 from the original class, two at level 6, one at level 10, and two yet again at level 14/18.

Probably not what the archetype intented, as it is a straight upgrade from the base class. Medium Armor and Shield proficiency is the most noteworthy thing that you're missing out on.

If two archetypes says that it makes any sort of change to the same ability, even if it's something like "Add X to your list of choices for Y" like the Scaled Fist's bonus feats, you can't stack them. The only archetype that is allowed to do something similar to this is the Qinggong Monk, which explicitly states that you can stack it with any monk archetype as long as you don't trade out one of the class features changed or replaced by the other archetype.

It looks more like a mistake than intentional. even in PFS books it doesn't need to say "this alters" or "this replaces" to have it alter or replace something. So since it has the same name as the normal ability I'm sure it should have the line that says this alters the normal bonus feats.
Mainly because I'm not seeing anything that is a drawback in the archetype that would balance doubling up on bonus feats.

Liberty's Edge

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It seems like a case of a poorly worded ability. I recommend getting in touch with the folks at Deamscarred and asking them. They're a good, reputable company, I'm sure they'll let you know if you're reading it correctly or if they need to clarify the ability.

In fact, why not post this question in the actual Paths of War product forum right here on Paizo.com?

Yeah, seems like they accidentally made a straight-upgrade archetype. Most of the things in the archetype don't replace or alter anything, and those that do replace them with a better version. The only tradeoff I can see is that it changes which disciplines are available.

In general, you should always read the text carefully, as there are several different ways it can indicate it replaces something (e.g. "replaces," "modifies," "alters," or "changes" at the end of a feature, or "does not get" at the beginning of the archetype's list of features), and sometimes archetypes will give free things, but have other features replace or downgrade very important features or multiple features at once (this usually happens when it is giving you something at a level other than the one of a feature you lose, such as granting a 1st level bonus feat but not getting a 3rd level feature).

I'll do this as well.
