Mage Mangaka

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Im trying to get a friend to play pathfinder and told him he could be anything he wanted since there are so many classes and races, and he tells me if he can draw stuff to life or draw spells. Basically he want to draw. I thought that maybe a mage with various feats so maybe human wizard, but still have my doubts. Ideas?

Dreamspun sorceror witha bloodline familiar, figment archetype. Flavor the familiar as a doodle he sketches and brings to life, his magic is all things he dreams and imagines.

Wayang Shadow Puppeteer?

I get the idea that you would like your friend to be able to use the official Paizo-printed books, but have you checked into third-party sources? Spheres of Power has a system of basically building your own mages, both in terms of what kind of magic they use, and in how it works.

If your friend wants to draw his magic, there's what's called an optional "drawback" in this system that does just that. "Skilled Casting" requires you to pick a skill that you can put points into, and every time you want to use your magic you must roll your selected skill.

An example of this that's used in the book is by imagining the Avatar (Last Airbender, Legend of Korra) world and how they use magic. Every time a magic user (bender) wishes to use their magic, they must roll a Perform (Martial Arts) check.

Something like this can be used as good flavoring to your magic. The "Runist" casting tradition even supports this particular concept as well. "Must roll Craft (Calligraphy) in order to use your magic." It wouldn't be hard to say you have to roll Craft (Manga and Comics) instead of (Calligraphy).

Otherwise, if you wish to stick to standard magic, just pay attention to spells with Somatic components, as they are the physical hand waving and gesturing and whatever else physical you need to do in order to complete the spell. You could say you're drawing your intended scene as part of your Somatic components.

The wonderful thing about these games is that there's more to the game than just the rules. You can get bogged down in them and forget to give your imagination a turn.

That reminds me of classes that create magical items, and two come to mind: Runesmith and the Vizier.

Or a re-flavored summoner that "draws" his summons instead of just casting them.

I like the Runist idea since he would have to craft his drawings, but is there a Runist class like in D&D? Im still pretty new to pathfinder.

Check out the Protean Scribe. If not, use Spheres of Power to flavor a Tradition appropriately.

Thanks for all the info!

Marvelous Pigments could be a fun item to go with the draw/paint theme.

If you make a summoner that paints creatures to life, there's only one name you can give your eidolon...
