Resolve (Ex): Starting at 1st level, the samurai gains

resolve that he can call upon to endure even the most
devastating wounds and afflictions. He can use this
ability once per day at 1st level, plus one additional time
per day for every two samurai levels beyond 1st. Whenever
the samurai defeats the target of his challenge, he regains
one daily use of his resolve, up to his maximum number of
uses per day. Defeating the target of his challenge usually
involves reducing the target to 0 hit points or fewer,
but the GM might rule that an enemy who surrenders
or f lees the battle is also defeated. He can use this
resolve in a number of ways.

Unstoppable: When the samurai is reduced
to fewer than 0 hit points but not slain, he can
spend one use of his resolve as an immediate
action to instantly stabilize and remain
conscious. He is staggered, but he does not
fall unconscious and begin dying if he
takes a standard action. He does fall
unconscious if he takes additional
damage from any source.

Staggered: A staggered creature may take a single move
action or standard action each round (but not both, nor
can he take full-round actions). A staggered creature can
still take swift and immediate actions. A creature with
nonlethal damage exactly equal to its current hit points
gains the staggered condition.

Question and Example:

in the below example, can the Samurai use Unstoppable twice during the same fight to stay conscious?

Samurai has 7 hitpoints, he takes 8pts of dmg, dropping him to -1.
Samurai uses a Resolve point and activates Unstoppable, keeping him conscious and staggered.
next round, he takes 4pts, but instead of dropping unconscious, he uses unstoppable again to remain conscious at -5hps.

as long as the damage past 0 hp doesn't reach a total equal to his con score and he has enough uses of resolve i don't see why the samurai couldn't

oh course i am the kind of player that if i have permission i will build an orc or half orc samurai go down the deathless feat tree to become a truly unstoppable force destruction on the battle field

The Exchange

if the Samurai in the above example was healed to positive hitpoints, from that -5hps back to 7hps, would the staggered condition go away or does it last the remainder of the fight?

i would say yes because the samurai is above 0 hp again, if anyone else knows for sure please comment

A couple points. One, you could spend more resolve to stay up. However, note it's an immediate action. So additional damage in that round will stop him cold as he won't be able to take another for a round.

And two, healing to above 0 will unstagger him.

Lastly, as a side note, we had a full orc samurai and found it overlapped so deathless wasn't really needed. In fact later on the samurai class was superior.

true there is some overlap but deathless initiate allows you to do more damage while below 0 hp and you won't be staggered and deathless zealot forces your foes to reroll critical confirmation rolls and take the lowest result so it doesn't make it worthless for an orc or half-orc samurai to take the feat tree, also most of those abilities run off of resolve and challenges while the feats just happens when he hits 0 hp

How long does the Samurai get to function in this way - staggered with negative hit points?
rest of the fight, 1 turn, all day?

It says he is stabilized so I assume all day. Of course he is likely to get healing soon after that.
