hi all,
reading a module about a ghost with a dead lover who has turned into a wraith. the module says that the ghost is tied to the material plane until the pcs lay her lover(wraith) to rest.
does simply killing it set it to rest?
would the pcs have to perform or at least attempt to bury or sanctify the wraith's remains?
any game mechanics on this?

Well a Wraith is incorporeal so i would take this as a two step approach. One, defeat the Wraith. Two locate and properly inter the physical remains. There may not be any physical remains left at this point however so the party may need to consult with a priest to have a memorial or tombstone made. You can specify something like a cleric of the Wraith's former religion must recite burial mantras at the place of the Wraith's fall fairly easily.

Typically that's just a fancy way of saying kill the wraith. If there's more to the story of why the person came back as a wraith, you might need to do something to resolve that. If it's just from a create spawn, that's all that should be necessary.
Generally ghost release criteria are descriptive rather than rules-heavy. As such, it's up to the GM to decide how involved it needs to be.

ty for replies,
i have run wraiths many times but until this question has come up, i never really gave any thought to the wraith's previous corporeal body. many times as players we had to find remains and bury/bless in order to satisfy a restless spirit. i might use a haunt to go off in the place where the npc died to give some insight where his body is. i don't want to tie the wraith unnecessarily to the site of his death.
