The original concept was a Battle Mage. More specifically those trained to fight alongside Mages as both guards and Errand runners. While able to accompany them to other planes.
The class I created worked well in old D&D systems being both unique at the time and being playable with no overt benefits to the player over other classes.
Some Race restrictions.
Hd as per cleric. Allowed light armour. Limited weapon proficiency must choose 2and that would be all they ever receive do to the need to train elsewhere. Weapons must be single had melee.
Due to the need to partake in unusual travel they would be bonded to their main weapon with the ability to call it to them (or held in a small micro dimension}
They would also receive a combat familiar used more for direct defense and keeping track of surroundings reducing surprise.
At later levels gain the ability to place elemental enchants upon their chosen weapon
And as they advance in levels gain limited spell abilities.
This is a brief description of course. I have reasoning behind most of this and Particular demands written in to provide context and flavour

That almost sounds like a Magus from Ultimate Magic (one of the paizo books) and the familiar can be granted from a splat-book called the Familiar Folio (also paizo).
The idea being they have a different spell list than your standard wizards, don't get as much spells, pretty much wear light or no armor in most cases, and have a bond with their weapon that they can alter it at later levels. The Magus is available here on the PRD. The little blue bar to the left of the page under all the banners. Says "Rules Archive" that link can take you to a rules rundown of the major hardback books of Pathfinder. Give Magus a read. There was also the Blackblade Magus that gains a specific Intelligent Weapon that evolves with him.
The Familiar Folio has options on different familiars and like... mini-classes for familiars so that anyone can get one. From the Fighter's Loyal Hunting Dog, to the Bard's Songbird that aids in bardic music.
I would start there and look at houseruling the class or maybe even turning your class into an "archetype." A subset of a class that trades class features for different class features.

From a quick preview the Magus is close. To my original thought some of that could be corrected through role play/ backstory. The magus class seems far less restrictive then my design but in the end close enough to make mine now irrelevant using the old rule that if there is something close then there is no reason to create something new

The familiar is different but can be overcome. And the bonded weapon. But it is definitely a close fit. Close enough that if I find somewhere to play. I will definitely have to try playing one. In the mean time I have to decide whether to be happy to see something that close to my idea in print or upset that I did not find away to submit it myself years ago

I'm pretty sure Magi can get familiars though their class natively anyway. One of their arcana allows them to get a familiar, I believe.
As long as they are not Bladebound or any other archetype that prohibits a familliar, yes.

An archetype they slows casting somewhat and grants an animal companion at 1st level may be what you want. As for the planer travel you could have the archetype offer favored terrains (different plains). Favored terrain is a ranger class feature.
Since rangers get an AC it could work as well. Would need to make it arcane and give it better spell casting. This variant would be more martial.
There is also a plains walker prestige path. Not sure it fits.
