need funny ideas for letting player's new character have old character's gear

Advice

We had a member of our party die last session, and the player insisted we not bring him back to life. It would have been funny to bring him back anyway, but he had "the curse" so we disposed of his body instead and took his loot.

Now he has a new character, who immediately started off very secretive with our group. We want to give him the gear from his old character, but we want to have a bit of fun with it.

Does anyone have any good ideas or stories that might help.

So far the only thing I can come up with is to do a private session with the DM to drum up a story that would intrigue the new character, and draw them into a goose chase.

One detail I forgot to add, my character is lawful good dwarf fighter (who HATES magic), so it's got to be something he would do. My character doesn't trust someone who refuses to even reveal their face to him, but at the same time welcomes those who are willing to fight the good cause (lawfully, of course).

Thanks!

your party gets kidnapped by (insert baddie here, or lawfolks - mistaken identity, whatever the reasons, capture them). New player was out for breakfast, so he's free. In order to bust them all out, he's gotta break into the evidence room (or sneak into X room in the cave) and get their equipment. He spots a bunch of items that could be handy (his old loot) and saves all their lives (maybe the guards are a little lax because the big bad adventurers are already locked away). The players are so grateful to get their other lewtz back, they provisionally allow the new guy to keep the dead guy's loot, rationalizing to each other that the rookie proved he can be an asset with the right gear and such. Optionally, he can let them suffer in prison while he sells all their loot and pays for a crack mercenary squad to spring them. Now none of them have loots. Balance.

"Well we'd like to give you all this free stuff from the last party member that croaked under suspicious circumstances, but it would be weird to give it to someone whose face we haven't even seen yet. This is an investment on trust of course! If someone one day ganks you in an dark alley one night and strolls around with his own face and your stuff, we wouldn't even know it wasn't you!"

It would help to know if there was any relation between the old character and the new. Is this a cousin? Uncle? Bastard child?

Is your character the only one who would be handing over the equipment?

If not, then a more Chaotic person might be able to say: "Hey! We need to disguise you as [old character] because..." Fill in the rest. There are so many reasons why!

My instinct:

The new party member could be a thief. "Hey, that's some nice unused stuff there..."

Cue a Benny Hill Theme Song chase across town with a dwarf charging after a thief followed by the party stumbling into the next adventure and everyone quickly having to get along.

The new character just has the old character's stuff with no explanation given. The dwarf is the only one who ever questions why.

Let me clarify, we want to use this as an opportunity to harass the new character (and the player too, in a friendly, funny to all way).

We can work out the mechanics of a reasonable way to give him the loot. What we're struggling with is the hazing aspect of it...

Wait. That's it. You just said it. Hazing.

"So, you want to join our adventuring party? Alright, fine. We'll give you some dead guy's stuff, too... but you gotta pass some tests to join THIS adventuring party."

Cue Frat Boy style hazing. It helps if Lawful Good Dwarf is drunk at the time.

oh, well then, that's different. Make him do humliating things of his own choice, so that he/she can at least be a part of the creative process. The more humiliating, the more rewards. Just have someone other than the stern/compassionate/nice/goody-goody dwarf suggest it. Maybe that grubby ranger with the drinking problem can play the bad guy, and convince the other party members that "no really, it's an important test! We don't want any cowards joining up, do we?"

edit: lol, was eating while I typed, didn't even see Inlaa's post. Yeah, what Inlaa said, but also what I said. Less frat music and rufies though.
