Some help with playing my Cleric of Urgothoa

Advice

My character is using a scythe. My general play style is buff my allies as much as possible before combat, and weaken my enemies during combat. I am usually standing a little bit behind the front line, and using reach from the scythe to attack my enemies. My domains are Ferocity (Strength) and Divine (Magic). Both are working out well with my goals so far.

The Campaign we are running is Way of the Wicked, so we get an extra 2 skill points per level. I'm a human, so 5 skill points.

My base stats are 16 str, 10 dex, 14 con, 10 int, 18 wis, 10 cha. My feats are currently power attack, scribe scroll, heavy armor prof, and combat casting. I plan on getting Divine interference.

The party is myself, a Wolf riding Hunter (badass), an anti-paladin with melee focus, necromancy wizard, a Bard who's only use seems to be bardic performance and sneaking.

I just wanted advice on what spells would be good for the team, as well as any advice during combat. Also what are good skills to be working on? In general what are things I can do to play a Cleric better since this is my first time playing a fullcaster.

We're level 6 right now.

Note: This is something my friend wrote and asked me to post it here so he could get advice from a wide range of players. I'm the aforementioned Wolf Riding Hunter who just so happens to be a badass.

I'm pretty sure scythes aren't normally reach weapons.

Bless, Prayer and Blessing of Fervor are the gold standards for clerics buffing others, though you won't have Blessing of Fervor until next level.

Summon Monster 3 is a pretty strong choice as well, it may take a little bit to get the monsters, but they clog battlefields really well, and this is where summoning to get SLAs can really expand your possibilities.

Potion Glutton out of ISG and/or Additional Traits to get Accelerated Drinker out of CeoD can really help with the self buffing, especially in a reach build, since potions of Enlarge Person are quicker than casting the spell in the first place.

Scythe is not a reach weapon. That said, I have had a GM tell me before it was, so run with it. Reach or not, it is an awesome weapon.

Cleric of the Undead goddess? I would have a few bloody skeletons follow me around. They self resurrect if not killed with positive/holy energy. This would possibly be better then summons (due to time it takes to summon) but you lose the surprise factor of summoning.

Too bad you didn't go charisma. I'd be able to give you all sorts of tips.
In general, spiritual weapon will be your friend. Cause fear should be your go-to spell on anything weak enough to be affected by it. Bane is also a decent choice. Bless is considered better but why are we playing an evil cleric of an evil goddess and using the same spells the good guys do? Bane.

Hold person, animate dead, desecrate, inflict spells, bestow curse.
General stat buffs like bears endurance and bulls strength are good choices.

Befriend the Bard. Give him keen Rapiers or something. Convince him to take Butterfly Sting. Enjoy 4x crits.

A great combo is the meta-master trait combined with Extend spell MM feat..... now every single spell you cast upto Lv 3 last twice as long for no increased spell level penalty.

A wand of divine favour now has some serious mileage.... by the looks of things youre looking for some melee ability? Go Lv 1 spell wand crazy.....

Urgathoa and Desna aren't BFF's, so that would be harder to pull of then you might think.

Why no charisma and/or (un)dead domain? Its rather hard to find a reason to take urgathoa if your not interested in undead (aside from domains and favorite weapon).
Check the inner sea gods book for more info about your goddes (tldr; she likes undead)

For spells: long lasting buffs, and bigger numbers is better, you don't want to be casting buffs in combat but before and after. Extend spell is your friend. Ghoul touch and Contagion are better for urgathoa priests (Inner Sea Gods)

I wrote way more advice but then I noticed you play with much higher point buy so it wasn't that usefull for you since you have high strenght and wisdom.

Quick note; you are given bless water by your goddes as level 2 bonus spell and are forbidden to use it by the same goddes. Bull strength from the other domain is a way better option for your build but still, no sense what so ever...

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm not sure why everyone is obsessed with Urgathoa's undead aspect. Urgathoa is one of my favorite deities in the game and it has nothing to do with zombie minions and everything to do with gluttony and living forever. This is the goddess of rock stars, overindulgence and eternal youth at a terrible price. No reason someone focused on avoiding death and enjoying life should not get along with someone who worships Desna, though a zombie lord with an insatiable appetite for power is another story...

Maybe its the amount of times undead is typed in her chapter in ISG?
