Finding a game

Gamer Connection

I've been playing Pathfinder a bit now with some friends of mine, doing only homebrew games. Thing is I've realized I'm not a good fit for this group. I read and fin the rules, and they don't care about the rules much, like one GM thought that evil eye witch hex and cackle were free actions because it was just looking and talking, one had random house rules that "were known as needed." And one thought that the game should be "hard" and hard meant that anything was 10-15 higher than your skill at it.

So I'm still wanting to play but I don't have anyone to play with now. I'm not sure how to find a group to play with. And I don't know if PFS would be good because I only own the ACG and I don't have money now to go and buy other books to use. What options can I look into to find a group?

Is there an LGS nearby? It could also be helpful to know where you are.

PFS is both fun and a good way to find a group. When you are playing at a PFS table, watch and listen. If you see someone that seems to play the way you like, ask if they have a regular home group with any openings.

PFS assumes you have the CRB, Field Guide, and free Guide to Organized Play. So if you build your characters using only those plus the ACG that you won, you should be fine.

And yes, you can build perfectly acceptable characters using just those books.

You can just put up a not a local game shop. But sometimes the groups or individuals that you encounter that way are horrific.

There are some websites that try to match up players and groups. You can still have some of the same issues, but usually not quite as bad.

Oh I didn't know that the CRB was free to use. So even with that, how do I get into PFS? How do I find PFS tables?

Check out this page for a list of events. It looks like there's a weekly game at Dragons Keep in Provo. You can also look up your local Venture-Captain here. They should be able to point you in the right direction.

To find PFS games

Many of them have an online reservation for a spot at the table. So are just a first come first serve basis.

Those are the assumed books. If you use those you probably won't be asked to show ownership like you might be with the ACG.
Still probably ought to get the CRB (or at least the PDF) eventually.

Go to the PFS part of this website (upper left corner of the page). Somewhere in there is the way to get a PFS number. I don't remember exactly.

Create a PFS legal character using the books you own and the Guide to Organized Play.

To get a PFS number, just click the button on the your account page.

If you need any further help, I'm a regular player at the Provo PFS games.

Also, I too am looking for a home brew game. Personally I'd like something with greater emphasis on role play and good versus evil morality and less on murder hobo tactics.

Have you attended any PFS games here in Provo yet?
