Paizo has a number of free PDF downloads for the guides of the various available Adventure Paths. I recently played (GM'd?) a game where someone used a feat from one of those free PDF downloads, but we were not playing as part of that AP. Is it legal to use anything available in those free PDF's as part of regular PFS play even though the character may never play in any part of the AP from which the feat/trait/item/etc came?

If it's called out on the Additional Resources page as legal...it's legal (as long as the player has the source).
If it's not called out on the Additional Resources page as legal...it's not legal.
The character does not have to play through any specific scenario/AP/module to use a legal resource. The only caveat to that is that some illegal resources are made legal by specific chronicles, and those are listed as legal on the chronicles.

The Top of the Additional Resources page (as an example) wrote:So, yes, some Player's Guide content is legal.Curse of the Crimson Throne Player's Guide
Equipment: all equipment on pages 12-13 (except hide shirt); Feats: Acadamae Graduate, Crossbow Mastery
Actually, this was the exact example I saw during recent play. Thanks for bringing this up. I forgot to check the additional resources.

Agreed, which makes it kinda fun as how it can be played!
