Two of my "nephews" are in archery. I just forwarded that to both.

Those bows were originally meant to be used from horseback. I still cannot fathom getting so good at both riding and archery to hit a stationary target, let alone a moving one, while riding at a full gallop.

Just another one of those skills lost to time and the advent of more technology.

My fencing coach used to say, "Any time you're not practicing, remember that someone else is. And when you meet, he will beat you."


I fenced in college, first as a hobby then in class. My friends and I practiced for hours every night after dinner. I got to be pretty darned good at it. Now it's 33 years later and I'm too fat to even walk the complete block I live on while walking the dogs.

I miss martial arts. I miss sword practice. I miss being in shape. I miss being able to run. I miss it all.
