monk themed item!

Advice

Silver Crusade

So I am looking to put in a nice magic item, say 5000 gp or less, for the party monk. I need an idea besides amulet of mighty fists, but could throw down a custom item as long as the numbers work.

The monk in question has 14s in his Dex/con/wis/str, is quiggong, and has boar style. I considered a custom headband of wis+2 with some other minor ability, or the like. Ideas?

Silver Crusade

Ki mat, necklace of ki serenity, bodywraps of something or other. Monk robes, probably too expensive. weapon with ki focus, but he probably likes unarmed strikes instead.

Silver Crusade

I just figured bracer of armor +1 brawling

If you want a custom magic item, consider taking a normal magic item and adding skill bonuses. I've found that this is a great way to add a bit of extra flair to some of the more useful but 'ho-hum' magic items. Off the top of my head:

Sash of the initiate: This sash is traditionally given to young apprentice monks to help them in mastering various martial artistry moves. The initiates are given the belt to help them complete various moves, so they can feel what the move is like when done correctly, and then taken away so the monk can learn to do it themselves.

Belt of dex +2 (4000) + skill bonus (acrobatics) +2 (400)
Skill bonus x1.5 (two abilities on the same item) =600 total
Total: 4600 gp.

Training shawl: the monks of the northern monastery of x often loose new recruits to the cold harshness of the snowy landscape. While surviving in the wilderness is a core concept of their training system, the monks do recognize that not everyone starts out able to survive the inhospitable climate. Thus they commissioned these shawls, which take the cloak slot but are not as bulky, which aid in the ease of surviving in the wild while training.

Cloak of resistance +1 (1000)
+5 bonus to survival (+2500)
Multiple abilities: 1000 x 1.5
Total: 4000

Unfortunately (And stupidly, feeling almost intentionally jerkish), Brawling can't be put on Bracers of Armor.

Depending on his Ki abilities, the necklace could be good. You could also look at something a little more secondary, but still useful like a quick runner's shirt or feather step slippers.

I know Brawling says it can only be applied to light armour. I am not sure that that automatically discounts bracers of armour, which fall outside of the normal light/medium/heavy armor spectrum.

Personally I am not a big fan of the very literal and narrow way in which people interpret rules outside of the context of said rules. Not saying this is what you are doing, speaking in general here.

I know, I know: Brawling can only be applied to light armor. However, bracers of armor are NO category. Yes, they are not light. But they are also not medium nor heavy.

SO, RAW you are right. But since it is a home-game I think it would not be terrible to keep it included as an option to be given to the OP's player.

Why not?

According to the text of bracers of armor I see no problem?

Text: Alternatively, bracers of armor can be enchanted with armor special abilities. Special abilities usually count as additional bonuses for determining the market value of an item, but do not improve AC. Bracers of armor cannot have a modified bonus (armor bonus plus armor special ability bonus equivalents) higher than +8. Bracers of armor must have at least a +1 armor bonus to grant an armor special ability. Bracers of armor cannot have any armor special abilities that add a flat gp amount to their cost. Bracers of armor and ordinary armor do not stack. If the wearer receives a larger armor bonus from another source, the bracers of armor cease functioning and do not grant their armor bonus or their armor special abilities. If the bracers of armor grant a larger armor bonus, the other source of armor ceases functioning.

Brawling is a +1 bonus, not a flat GP cost. So, now problem there.

Bracers of armour fall outside of said categories, and are generally considered the go-to option for those wearing no armour or light armour. Monk's fall in that category.

Therefor, I could see an argument for allowing this on monks who are just using...

I am with you on this, as the ruling prevented my PFS monk from adding the Brawling enhancement to his BoA. Unfortunately, BoA are not light armor, and the enhancement can only be applied to chain shirt, leather, etc.

Yeah indeed, had already editted.

Pfft, silly rules are silly.

I found one recently that allows you to regain 2 Ki for only a full round action, the Amulet of Hidden Strength. If you primarily use Ki for extra attacks, this could be a very good thing.

Well, it is an armor property. The original idea was that it shouldn't go to monks. It was instead meant to make unarmed builds appealing to nonmonks, since those usually had to deal with the fact that they had trouble with DR.

But please excuse me, my sohei monk has to go pick up his +1 brawling chainshirt from the armorer's. Maybe pick up some pearls of power along the way so he can bribe the cleric into casting greater magic weapon everyday so he can skip AoMF. Pummeling style just simplifies things since it gives DR swirlies and wedgies.
