I want to make a nigh invulnerable non-artifact longsword. How best to do it though?

On my own I've come up with a +5 adamantine impervious longsword that has had a CL 20th hardening spell cast upon it, which jacks up the hardness and hit points to 50 and 106, respectively. What else is there though?

(Bonus points if it also excels at being able to easily destroy other things due to its sheer toughness.)

Make it also Intelligent to the point it could cast beneficial spells that would prevent damage to itself or allow it to get away from a dangerous situation.

Nice! So that gets us to 55 hardness and 126 hp.

Make the blade a force effect and give it the hardness/hit points you want? Full effect against incorporeal as well.

Thanks Wiggz, but I wanted to look into officially established options before resorting to homebrew.

Oh. Then Brilliant Energy.

;-P

Well there is reinforce armaments which doubles the hardness of the sword. It might not stack though.

Wiggz, brilliant energy doesn't seem to effect the vulnerability of the weapon. It can still be sundered (by striking the pommel I would guess) or otherwise destroyed. It also comes with a whole set of drawbacks (can't hurt certain creatures, glows brightly while you try to sneak, etc.).

David, I'm looking more for permanent solutions, though that is a nice spell.

See also, Rune of Durability (Sorc/Wiz 3) from Dwarves of Golarion - permanent duration, "You inscribe an angular rune upon the surface of a weapon, increasing its hit points. A weapon that bears this rune multiplies its hit points by 2, as if it were one size category larger than it actually is. Placing more than one rune of this type on a weapon has no effect."

Should stack with all the other effects listed, doesn't have any restrictions on working with magic items.

Nice! So that gets us to 55 hardness and 132 hp for our longsword.

A one-handed metal-hafted weapon with all these things would have a whopping 172 hp!

And thank you SO much for linking to it, when I had to search for all others.

Now, are there any other abilities out there that contribute to the survival of the weapon that aren't all about hardness and hit points; something that protects against disarm/sunder attempts, or gives the sword itself bonuses on its saving throws perhaps (such as against a disintegrate spell, for example)?

Link.
If you don't care about the restrictions, Metal Oracles gets +10 on hardness when they create their own metals. Raise an Iron Wall, Polymorph Any Item into adamantine and reach 75 on hardness ('cause (20+10)*2 and stuff).

Polymorph Any Object explicitly says that it cannot change things into adamantine, gold, silver, mithral, or other valuable substances.

Not exactly the same thing, but the Siege Engine rules explain how you can magically treat walls, doors, and buildings to double hardness and hit points. It doesn't explicitly say you can do it to other items per RAW, and there's no definite way to say what the cost would be for a sword. So it might have to be a VERY large sword, say, Colossal-sized. That way, it would have a lot more HP, and you could then use it as a door to magically harden it.

If the intent is to have it be usable, get permanent shrink item cast on it afterward.

Whoops. Something like a (GM-Approved) Permanent Major Creation?

A Wish?
Just trying.
EDIT - This should work: Link. Double hardness, still temporary.

Got cited upthread.

If Mythic Rules are applicable...

Quote:
Unyielding: A legendary item with this ability has double the hardness of a typical item of its type and triple the hit points. Furthermore, it's immune to all attempts to sunder it made by non-mythic creatures. This is a persistent ability.

If not, then disregard my ramblings...
