Early Enrollment: Active players 1 out of 6 ?

This title is perhaps slightly provocative, but it appears that all the kickstarter contributors of level Pionneer and above represent 6 339 people (Buddy = 2 people / Guild = 6 people).

Until now the Land rush has gathered around 1 042 votes.

So we can presume that only one player out of six is following the Land Rush.

We can conclude that only one player out of six has voted in the land rush. There can be many reasons to sit on the fence for a few weeks before committing yourself. That said, your point is valid, we would expect much higher numbers before the landrush is through.

Keep in mind that total includes 717 potentially hypothetical buddies and 940 potentially hypothetical guild members. Only the people who actually pledged those levels exist(ed) in certainty. Many of them were likely planning ahead, but won't start handing out their 'extra accounts' until the game is live.

That creates a potential range between ~16% and ~40% of 'kickstarter backers' who have participated in the land rush thus far (depending on how many of those hypothetical accounts have been claimed by actual players). The level of non-participation implied by that doesn't seem unreasonable to me. A large portion of the community is unlikely to get involved until they are able to play the game. If that happens before the end of the land rush then we may see a significant increase in land rush activity, but otherwise I'd expect the current slow rate of growth to continue.

Speaking for myself, I have yet to throw in with any guild so I have not voted. Others are likely in a similar boat.

I donated at the pionneer level and I know nothing about the land rush and never read the kickstarter updates. I skim the boards via a feedreader and read a few when I have time and that catch my interest. I am sure that I am not the only one who donated at the Pioneer or above level just to help out. My interest in the game is low and I have other things that I need to spend my time on. But while my interest is low and my time is spent on other things I wanted to help out how I could to see this get off the ground.

One big thing that would help, in my opinion, is to find a group that you'll want to play with and throw your support behind them. There are tons of guilds right at the cut-off point for getting a settlement. Even if you end up not living there, I'm sure they'd appreciate your support. Also, you might like some of the bigger groups, and any of them would also appreciate your help.

There's a pancake breakfast going on this morning over at Elkhaven. We have fresh maple syrup, back bacon and Tim's coffee.

Cast your vote Here for the Uniquely Canadian Settlement: Elkhaven in the landrush!

@Caldeathe As much of my time is working on my move from the UK to North Bay so I may take you up on that offer.

Nice.

I have interest in the game myself but the guild scene has never been my thing. I've always preferred to just float through games as a loner. If I vote for anyone for the land rush it will be because I like their write up and look forward to visiting it one day, not because I want to join up.

Which is perfectly acceptable; voting for a group in the land rush does not mean you have to join them, and I'm sure whatever group you vote for will happily take the vote without trying to force you into joining.

I think a great majority are likely in this boat. Largely individuals who did not have any known friends who wanted to put in so much money for a game so far away, and thus have less vested interested than those who have existing social connections already joining. These are also probably the players who spend much of their MMO time playing solo only to find groups for "group content". This may seem strange to those of us who have been paying attention, but I do not believe the majority have been reading all of the blog posts and forum banter. And a portion of those who have been are still probably imagining they will be able to play some aspects of the game solo.

The rest will just be waiting to see how these organizations play out in game for a little while before seeking to join one. It isn't really important until they are ready to get into Tier 2 after all. Or so it would seem.

Many times the devs have pointed out that this is not a game for solo play. However the option of going out in party groups meets that issue without characters ever joining a settlement. However, when player skills start into tier 2 (as Lifedragn points out above) the access to settlements will be needed. Undoubtedly settlement policy will favor residents over allies over strangers.

Can I play the game Solo

LH: [laughing] That is a fantastic - I love that question.

SC: [laughing] You shouldn't do that, you're going to die.

Yep, that has been my thinking too. The Outsiders company was set up specifically for individuals like this. Basically, it is an 'un-company' which will build 'un-settlements' for 'solo' players to 'join' so that they can get the benefits of community play in PFO without the hassles of dealing with group politics and other peoples' rules. Hopefully this will help more people make the transition from other MMOs to PFO style play.

Yes, but we also have this quote from Stephen:
Quote:
There will be still others that play almost entirely in town and are dedicated skill-based characters. They maintain multiple crafting queues and potentially still work a side job. They spend most of their playtime optimizing their queues, shuffling item outputs to market, and tracking down materials they need to fill the queues back up with useful projects. They may only leave town when they think it's worth their time to move items to or from a distant source themselves. They'll be practically clocked in all the time. This is fun for them.

In this post:Town Players

If there is no way to have fun in this game other then always running around in a solid group, it will struggle.

I can't believe there's ever been a solo crafter in any game. They need customers, materials, bankers, mules, folks to chat with while they do parts that get boring...

Perhaps those aren't deadly activities, but I know there've been times I was so bored, but still had another XXX pieces of armour to finish out an order, I'd've paid an assassin to visit me :-).

Well, not full time crafter, but I've played plenty of MMOs where I got up to the top of the crafting tree without ever buying or selling anything to other players. Just made things for personal use in other aspects of the game or to hand out to friends.

I know all the ppl from my guild (all pledges) have voted for our guild :) So I am all good in that regards (doesn't mean we are still looking for new members tho!)

Also, with my 2 char accounts... I already know what I will be doing with them :)

I think one saving grace for the player who typically prefers to play solo, is they can go ahead and join a settlement as a solo player, they don't have to join any particular company. Then by virtue of being a member of a settlement, they're likely to just get drawn into the more social aspects of the game. For me, I didn't join guilds in a lot of other games because I didn't have enough interaction with them for anyone to stand out; so I just didn't really bother with them. Here, I think you'll be getting more of the interaction that prompts interest in joining up with someone.
