Angel in the Tower (or how to resolve multiple End of Turn effects)

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

When more than one thing happens at the end of a turn, do you get to choose the order in which they resolve? Angel in the Tower has an effect that happens at the end of the turn. Amiri wants to use her power at the end of her turn to move OUT of the Shadow Clock location. That would leave the Shadow Clock empty, but does it matter?

Generally, you can decide the order, but here the intent is that the Shadow Clock cares about the absolute end of the turn, not the "beginning of the end of the turn step." So if Amiri leaves, the Clock chimes on the blessings deck.

Mike: So would that tend towards a more general rule? Something along the lines of, "end of turn effects which you can decide may be resolved in any order, but must be resolved before end of turn effects you have no control over." (I know that wording is probably not the best, but I just woke up so give me some time to think about a better one ;) )

Maybe. We will discuss.

Any further thoughts on this more comprehensive ruling, Mike?

Looking at this more, to some extent I'm not so sure Angel in the Tower's power is really an "end of the turn effect". Here is the words from the card:

Angel in the Tower wrote:
If the Shadow Clock location is open and no character is there at the end of the turn, discard the top card of the blessings deck.

In my mind, this is applied not during "Reset Your Hand" but during "End Your Turn". If the comma was 6 words to the left it would be an "end of the turn effect".

Even with the clarification on "end of the turn effects" being applied during "Reset Your Hand" phase, the turn still actually ends on the End Your Turn phase. And this scenario is asking you to check the Shadow Clock location when the turn actually ends.

To make that more clear though, I think it would be simple enough to have Angel in the Tower say this:

Angel in the Tower suggestion wrote:
If the Shadow Clock location is open and no character is there after you end your turn, discard the top card of the blessings deck.

Just an idea though.

Yeah, that makes sense.

With this text it would be a continuous effect. If at any time during a turn there were no characters at the clock, the clock would tick at the end of the turn.

Yeah, maybe. But I'm not really too concerned about that. The bigger thing I was suggesting was making the wording so that it happened not during Reset Your Hand but during or after End Your Turn.

Can Amiri start her turn at a different location, end it at the Shadow Clock then move to a new location at the beginning of her next turn so neither the Reset Your Hand or the Discard the Top Card of the Blessings Deck actions occur? I'm wondering if this is a valid move.

Amri can move at the end of her turn, but not the start of her turn. The move step that each character gets is after "start of turn" effects happen. So you could use Amri to avoid the discard top card of blessings deck never happens while exploring other locations with her, but you would need to recharge your hand and draw up every turn due to the Shadow Clock's rules.

I read it as it's a condition the card is looking for. So if amiri of other effects say move at end of turn and you say "ok I *end my turn* then move" (like what ash did in the evil dead graveyard) and u move... The card doesn't care what you say, has no memory of what you just did. It just looks after u move, turn end, nobody there... Bam! There goes a blessing.

Right, Amiri can't move away from Shadow Clock without triggering the end of turn effect. But as FWB says, Amiri can explore elsewhere, then at the end of her turn move to the Shadow Clock to avoid the end of turn effect that occurs when the Shadow Clock is empty.

My bad... Didn't read carefully. That would work right? We're using the same alain effect and skitter for abyssal rift in WotR to keep it closed as often as possible. The card would also keep looking when turn ended and see amiri/somebody there and not munch on a blessing.
