Can a Inquisitor Get A Familiar?

Advice

I want to make a Inquisitor with a familiar(if possible a thrush since this guy is a merchant) and wanted to know if there any way a inquisitor can get a familiar(Without Eldrich Heritage, not keen on spending 2 feats for it, or Multiclassing).

Please and Thank you ^-^

As far as I know, the only way for an inquisitor to get a familiar is through one of the two methods you already listed. Either take Eldritch Heritage, or multiclass into a wizard, sorcerer, or a rogue (either take the familiar rogue power or play as a Carnivalist and get one right out of the box). As of right now, there's no alternate class feature for the Inquisitor that will get them a familiar.

Well, there are several domain options that give familiars (although they are mostly themed, so it does not provide much choice in familiar)

The most obvious are the animal and terrain domains that are normally available to druids instead of animal companions. But the description of them from ultimate magic did say that "other nature themed classes" that could pick domains could pick them. So picking some nature themed diety (Gozreh...since his other domains are not that good for an inquisitor?). Basically, that one line from UM and picking a deity that could get an animal companion through domains anyway should convince most GM's. The eagle domain gives you a hawk as a familiar from the get go. there is also the monkey, serpent, crocodile, and frog domains.

I still feel like advocating for a single level dip into a class that naturally gets familiars though. Familiar's base their stats off of yours, getting half your Hp and all of your BAB, saves, and skills. Leveling in the class that gave the familiar just gives them additional natural armor and Intellect, and some smattering of extra abilities.

So maybe a witch dip? This might seem odd, since most hexes need scaling to do well, and you are not an INT class, but there is a single hex which is perfect for you: the feral speech hex. This hex basically does "Speak with Animals", but only one type of animal (birds, fish, mammals) at a time. But it has no duration (unless I am completely off base), so you could pick any animal and speak with it freely (well, standard action to activate or switch type of animal). I am also sure that it has other uses (interrogate the squirrels by bribing them with nuts?). Doing a Doctor Dolittle would be fantastic for an inquisitor serving a more nature themed diety.

There isn't one to my knowledge, if you just want an animal buddy, the Animal domain and it's subdomains are pretty cool. (Feather is a better then Fur, but I like both.) Animal domain gives you an Animal Companion like a Ranger at 4th lvl.

Alright, thank you everyone^-^
As of right now i have a lvl1 dip in wizard for the familiar and the scribe scroll feat(item creation feats in our campaign are crazy good). I was just hoping that somehow i could have the levels stack since i wanted to be able to talk to my familiar but oh well :\
Thanks for the help :)

@lemeres
Sadly i cant do that as through my random backstory i was raised by a race our GM created called Quanics, which follow very specific gods, so thats not an option for me :C

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Wait, can't a thrush talk a language of your choice (using supernatural powers) from the beginning anyway? Yeah, they are like ravens in that way.

Although you can't do that thing where you two speak your own little secret language until the "Speak with Master" ability at level 5. But I doubt you could get away with talking with a bird in front of your orc captors either way (for a nice generic example of how it would be useful), even if they couldn't understand you. That would just be a good way to give them thrush stew.

REALLY!!? that would be awesome xD Could you cite what book that comes from so I can tell my DM. As sad as it is that is the best news i have heard all week xD

Edit: Nvm i found it, its even core. Tiny print OP xD Thanks a ton :3

Well, the thrush itself isn't core, it is from Ultimate magic, but it is a mechanic found in core through the raven.

So yes, they are useful little buggers, aren't they? Heck, the thrush could probably do aid other with diplomacy (can you do that, never deal with faces much). This is particularly true since they start off with an intelligence that..well might be better than some fighters (it would take a race with penalty to INT, but those exist and can be good fighters otherwise), so they can pretty much follow all of your instructions perfectly from the get go.
